INTRODUCTIONHarvest 2014 was, if there ever is such a thing, much more “normal”. Combinable crops in general produced some very good yields of dry grain with harvest taking place during a relatively small window. A falling grain price coupled with the uncertainty of sugar beet prices and new CAP legislation however, all conspired to make sowing decisions anything but straightforward.

Group 4 feed varieties continue to dominate wheat plantings with Evolution taking a significant share for a new variety and KWS Santiago continuing to be our top seller. Skyfall has now taken a major share of the milling wheat plantings, tempting some growers back to this sector. Harvest 2015 results will tell us whether this is a trend set to continue although with KWS Trinity now recommended there are some new choices for milling wheat growers. KWS winter barley varieties continue to dominate with KWS Glacier and KWS Tower taking market share from KWS Cassia in the feed sector. For malting varieties SY Venture is now the market leader with Talisman now gaining support, it does appear however that spring varieties continue to be the maltsters preferred option.

Oilseed rape plantings took place for the first time in recent years without an insecticide seed treatment and, despite all our fears, in the east seems to have established well; there have however been some areas in the west of our trading region that have suffered severely with crop loss from flea beetle damage. Hybrid varieties have continued to increase acreages with Incentive 45 and PR46W21 both selling well. Advance and Charger in the conventional market have also both done well for us this year. Moving forward a HOLL variety now tops the gross output figures on the recommended list and we expect these specialist oil varieties to attract more interest now, although seed as ever is limited.

For this coming autumn there are some new varieties with good potential. In the wheat market Costello, Reflection, KWS Lili, KWS Tempo, KWS Trinity, RGT Conversion all have something to offer against current top sellers. For oilseed rapes, as ever, there seems to be a great deal of new material with the HOLL varieties along with Arazzo, Campus, Picto, Popular, Sy Harnas and Wembley looking to be the pick of the bunch.

Spring cropping has again shown an increase in plantings with Propino seeming to still dominate the malting barley sector, and Mulika the wheat market. Beans have seen the most growth this spring, with Fuego still popular but newer varieties Fanfare and Vertigo taking significant market share, something that seems certain to continue.

No doubt we will all have some challenges to face again in this coming year, from both the weather and changing legislation, but with the continued support that we can offer each other I am sure these can be overcome. I would like to thank you all for your support and trust we can continue to work together in the future.

OILSEED RAPE The oilseed rape seed market today is one of the most diverse in terms of variety that it is possible to be involved in. There is a huge range of varieties available covering different oil profiles and plant types. We are pleased to be able to offer a wide range of varietal choice but it is not practical to list all of them here. For your consideration below are a selection of the headline varieties we will be offering this year, but please get in touch about any varieties (listed or not) that you are considering sowing.

WHEAT - GROUP 1

CRUSOE H Cordiale x Gulliver LIMAGRAIN

A new entry on the recommended list in 2012, Crusoe is very similar in yield and quality to Gallant on paper. Straw is relatively short and moderately stiff, and maturity slightly behind Solstice. Disease resistance is good overall, particularly in respect of Mildew and Yellow Rust. Performance over the rotational positions is certainly comparable with its competitors making Crusoe a variety worth consideration. Following 2013/14 harvest results, Crusoe has continued to find favour with growers.

GALLANT H (Malacca x Charger) x Xi19 SYNGENTA SEEDS

Added to the recommended list in 2009/10 Gallant offers a good combination of high yield and quality. Disease resistance is comparable with those other varieties in Group 1. Gallant has proven to be early maturing, in many cases up to a week ahead of other more conventional varieties. As with all Group 1 wheats quality is key, so careful disease and nitrogen management will be essential in getting the most out of Gallant. Suitable for sowing from mid-September onwards, Gallant would appear to suit most rotational positions.

KWS TRINITY H Timaru x (Grafton x Einstein) KWS UK

Newly recommended for 20015/16, KWS Trinity continues the trend for higher yields and is now the joint top yielding Group 1 variety. Disease resistance is especially good with regard to the Rusts and Mildew. Straw is short and stiff, very similar to its competitors. Maturity is similar to Crusoe with the grain produced seemingly of good quality with particularly high Hagberg results. KWS Trinity is another good addition to the milling wheat sector and should soon become a mainstay if harvest results prove good. Seed will be limited in year one so early ordering will be essential in securing supply.

SKYFALL H C4148 x Hurricane RAGT SEEDS

First recommended in 2014/15 as the highest yielding Group 1 variety a position it now shares with KWS Trinity . Skyfall is an early-maturing variety with short stiff straw. Disease resistance is good and Skyfall has the added benefits of both Pch1 Eyespot resistance and Orange Wheat Blossom Midge resistance. Now NABIM approved, provided quality performance on farm is as expected, Skyfall looks to have a bright future. Early indications suggest Skyfall will perform well in most rotational situations and on most soil types. Following a sell out in 2014 much more seed is available this year but we still expect supply to be limited if farm performance is as good as anticipated.

WHEAT - GROUP 2 ADDED VALUEQuality is the key to unlocking the full potential of this market and with newer, higher-yielding varieties on the scene the penalties have become less.

CORDIALE H (Reaper x Cadenza) KWS UK

First recommended in 2004, Cordiale is a hard milling Group 2 variety with yield potential above Solstice. It has good overall disease resistance, particularly to Mildew and Fusarium, although Yellow and Brown Rust will require careful monitoring. Straw is short and stiff and maturity is early. Grain quality has proven to be reliable, the main reason for its continued popularity. Cordiale is suitable for most rotational positions and this, coupled with early maturity and flexibility of sowing date, is what has made the variety popular.

KWS LILI H Horizon x Timaru KWS UK

New to the recommended list this year, KWS Lili raises Group 2 variety yields to a level equal to that of the most popular feed varieties. Short stiff straw and good solid disease resistance make this a variety worth consideration without the added benefit of potential quality premiums. Grain quality is good, with high specific weights, should premiums be obtainable for the extra quality offered by the variety then, on a gross margin basis, KWS Lili has the potential to out-perform most varieties on farm.

In an ever changing market place KWS Lili offers growers a great opportunity. KWS Lili is a very high yielding variety with excellent agronomy and superb physical grain quality. These attributes coupled with its excellent potential to obtain a premium really defi ne KWS Lili as a true Dynamic Wheat.

WHEAT - GROUP 3 ADDED VALUE

DELPHI S Gladiator x Robigus SENOVA

Offering yields at a similar or slightly improved level to Invicta, grain quality is good, particularly Hagbergs. Disease resistance is sound overall. It is the short very stiff straw, slow development and indications of good drought tolerance, that set the variety apart. It is suitable for most rotational positions with early drilling an area of particular interest.

SCOUT S Z435 x Deben SENOVA

Added to the recommended list in 2009, Scout is a short, stiff-strawed variety offering good yield potential, although it is now at the lower end of the Group 3 sector. Disease resistance is sound, being particularly strong in respect to Eyespot, Yellow and Brown Rusts. Grain quality is good with high Hagbergs and specific weights, this may be helped by the varieties resistance to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge. Overall, Scout is a solid package and has established a niche for itself in the early sowing slot.

RGT CONVERSION S (Oakley x Ambrosia) x Alchemy RAGT SEEDS

Newly added to the recommended list for 2015/16 RGT Conversion is a short stiff-strawed Group 3 variety. Grain quality is good in relation to Hagberg and specific weight and the variety has shown (pre recommendation) to be early maturing similar to Gallant. Disease resistance is robust, and yield performance is perhaps the most consistent for any Group 3 variety across rotational position, soil type and drilling date. RGT Conversion offers another opportunity to tap into premium grain markets without compromising yield significantly, when compared to top feed varieties.

ZULU S CEBECO 99080 x (Claire x Robigus) LIMAGRAIN

Added to the 2014/15 recommended list, Zulu is a high-yielding variety producing grain suitable for distilling, export and biscuit making. Disease resistance is good overall although the variety is moderately susceptible to Brown Rust. Straw is similar to that of Invicta so not a major concern but will need a robust PGR programme. Zulu appears to suit all rotational positions. It is an interesting introduction and with premiums on soft wheats at the current lower levels, offers the yield to make margins similar to those of the higher-yielding feed types.

WHEAT - GROUP 4 FEED

BELUGA S (Robigus x Canterbury) x Claire SENOVA

Added to the 2010/11 recommended list, Beluga is a soft endosperm feed wheat with very short stiff straw and yield potential similar to JB Diego. Disease resistance is reasonable. We see continued interest in the variety due to its excellent yield performance, and suitability as a second wheat, coupled with excellent standing ability and early maturity, a trend we feel will continue as the variety is proving to be a favourite with growers.

COSTELLO H W151 x W134 SENOVA

A new addition to the 2015/16 recommended list, Costello is a hard milling feed variety with yields similar to Conqueror. Straw is short and stiff and disease resistance is good overall with maturity similar to Delphi, so at the earlier end of the spectrum. Grain quality is what sets this variety apart with a high Hagberg and the best specific weight of any variety on the recommended list: Costello would seem to be a good companion variety to be grown alongside some of the poorer specific weight feed varieties.

EVOLUTION H Smuggler x (Robigus x SJ5558) LIMAGRAIN

First recommended in 2014/15, Evolution is the joint second highest yielding wheat on the recommended list. Like many of its high-yielding companions, Evolution is later to mature, straw is stiff and of moderate height. Disease resistance is overall very robust especially with respect to Yellow and Brown Rust. Evolution does seem to be suitable for most rotational positions and soil types, based on trial evidence so far. Seed sold very quickly last year and if it proves itself in the field at harvest Evolution should establish itself as a major variety this year.

GRAFTON H Cordiale x W97 KWS UK

Added to the recommended list in 2010/2011, Grafton is a hard endosperm feed variety with some very appealing characteristics. With a yield similar to Relay and grain of high specific weight, Grafton fits nicely into the feed wheat sector. Disease resistance is good, with the exception of Brown Rust which is lower than average, but Grafton has the Rendezvous resistance gene to Eyespot. It is, however, the short, very stiff straw, slowness to develop and the earliness of maturity that really set Grafton apart. These three attributes are key to early drillers and this is where the variety excels. The earliness alone is useful to most in establishing oilseed rape crops as an alternative to barley.

Page 13: AUTUMN 2015 SPRING 2016 CATALOGUE - Walnes Seeds€¦ · SPRING 2016 CATALOGUE. WALNES SEEDS SEEDS SPECIALISTS Moat Farm, Moat Park, Earl Soham, Woodbridge, Suffolk, IP13 7SR Tel:

11

HEREFORD H Soloist x Deben SYNGENTA SEEDS

Exclusive to Walnes Seeds, Hereford is a very high-yielding feed wheat of a hard endosperm nature. Yields were particularly good locally, creating farmer demand for 2007 sowing, and following good results in 2008, Hereford went on to sell out in every successive season. The variety’s disease resistance profile is mixed, with Brown Rust being the main weakness although, as we have seen with other varieties, this is not always a stumbling block. Straw is of moderate height and relatively stiff. Grain quality is good with above average specific weight.

JB DIEGO H 3352B x STRU2374 SENOVA

Added to the 2008 recommended list as a high-yielding hard endosperm Group 4 variety, JB Diego has a yield similar to Relay and just below that of KWS Gator. Grain quality is good and straw length is moderate, but lodging resistance is good. Disease resistance is good although Brown Rust resistance is below that of some of its competitor varieties. JB Diego proved to have extremely good second wheat yield results and has continued to find favour with growers due to its reliability, predominantly in this rotational position.

KWS GATOR H Oakley x CPB W89 KWS UK

Recommended for the first time in 2012/13, KWS Gator is a high-yielding Group 4 feed wheat, yield above JB Diego and Relay. With moderate length but stiff straw and good overall disease resistance. KWS Gator has proved to be a useful alternative to other mainstream varieties. It is especially as a second wheat and its performance on lighter soils that show the strengths of the variety. Yields over the last two years have been quite exceptional in some circumstances and the variety continues to find favour with growers based on reliable on farm performance.

KWS KIELDER H Oakley x Brompton KWS UK

First recommended in 2013/14, KWS Kielder is the joint second highest-yielding variety on the recommended list. A hard-milling feed wheat with acceptable specific weights, KWS Kielder has short straw and is rather late maturing, but has given very high yields, stable across a variety of rotational positions and soil types. It is susceptible to both Mildew and Yellow Rust.

KWS TEMPO H CPBT151 x Timaru KWS UK

A hard-milling feed wheat with yields similar to KWS Santiago. KWS Tempo has short stiff straw and excellent grain quality, and seems suitable for early drilling. It is the variety’s disease resistance that sets it apart, this is excellent all round but is particularly strong in relation to Mildew, Yellow Rust and Fusarium. Whilst not on the recommended list we feel KWS Tempo has significant appeal and is likely to find favour with growers.

KWS SANTIAGO H Sherborne x Oakley KWS UK

First recommended in 2011/12, KWS Santiago remains our biggest selling winter wheat. Straw is moderate in height and relatively stiff, similar to Conqueror. Disease resistance is generally sound although Brown Rust and Eyespot scores are at the lower end of the range. Grain is of a hard nature and suitable for the feed markets only. KWS Santiago shows excellent yield potential, which is stable across a variety of rotational positions and soil types.

LEEDS S Robigus x Istabrac KWS UK

Leeds is a high-yielding, soft-milling Group 4 feed wheat rated good for distilling. With high yields equal to KWS Santiago, Leeds has high specific weight, but is particuarly susceptible to Mildew. An interesting introduction in 2013, Leeds attracted a lot of interest selling out early, and followed this with good results in 2014, which established the variety in the market.

Page 15: AUTUMN 2015 SPRING 2016 CATALOGUE - Walnes Seeds€¦ · SPRING 2016 CATALOGUE. WALNES SEEDS SEEDS SPECIALISTS Moat Farm, Moat Park, Earl Soham, Woodbridge, Suffolk, IP13 7SR Tel:

13

REFLECTION H Denman x Oakley SYNGENTA SEEDS

Joining the recommended list for 2015/16 as the highest yielding winter wheat, Reflection is a hard endosperm feed variety with high specific weights. Straw is short and stiff and disease resistance is robust. Unlike many of the recent introductions in the Group 4 sector Reflection is early to mature like Beluga. The combination of high yield and early maturity has already attracted significant interest and seed supply will be limited so an early sell-out is anticipated.

RELAY H Gladiator x Vector RAGT

First recommended in 2012/13 for the east/west regions, Relay is a high-yielding Group 4 variety with yield level comparable to JB Diego. Straw is short and stiff, and disease resistance good, particularly against Yellow Rust. Relay has a particularly vigorous autumn growth habit and rapid early spring growth with excellent tillering, which indicates that the variety is especially competitive against blackgrass.

REVELATION S (Alchemy x Claire) x Shepherd LIMAGRAIN

First recommended in 2013/14, Revelation is a soft-milling Group 4 wheat with yield levels the same as KWS Gator. With excellent disease resistance, particularly against the Rusts, Revelation shows good resistance to lodging but is later maturing. With solid, all-round performance it is a variety to watch and attracted a good level of interest last year after some excellent on farm results.

WINTER BARLEY - FEED

KWS CASSIA (Eden x Carat) x Saffron KWS UK

KWS Cassia was first recommended in 2010. With medium length stiff straw, bold grain and a high specific weight rating. Disease resistance is robust across the spectrum presenting no major issues. KWS Cassia has proven to be a very popular variety although it is now yielding market share to newer introductions.

KWS GLACIER Cassia x Retriever KWS UK

First recommended in 2013/14, KWS Glacier was the joint top-yielding, two-row feed variety with high specific weight only now surpassed by KWS Infinity. KWS Glacier has short, stiff straw and a good disease resistance profile, although it is susceptible to Mildew. A variety proving increasingly popular with growers.

KWS INFINITY Cassia x Retriever KWS UK

First recommended this year as the top yielding two row type, KWS Infinity continues the recent trend from KWS for steadily increasing feed barley yields. KWS Infinity is very similar in respect of disease resistance and straw characteristics to KWS Glacier and KWS Tower. Grain quality is also of a similar quality although screening levels do seem a little higher but specific weight remains high. Seed of this variety is extremely limited and early ordering will be essential to secure a supply.

KWS TOWER Cassia x Retriever KWS UK

First recommended for 2014/15, KWS Tower was the joint top-yielding, two-row feed variety at this point, although now overtaken by KWS Infinity. With high specific weight, short stiff straw, and bold grain with low screening levels and solid disease resistance KWS Tower has begun to find favour with growers. Although a bit of a slow starter on the sales front we have had some of our best seed yields from winter barley ever with this variety and fully expect its market share to grow.

WINTER BARLEY - MALTING

SY VENTURE DH9525 x Retriever SYNGENTA SEEDS

With IBD approval for brewing, the two-row variety SY Venture first entered the recommended list in 2012. Higher yielding than both Winsome and Cassata, it has shorter, stiffer straw and a high specific weight, coupled with a solid disease resistance package. Now firmly established as the major winter malting variety.

TALISMAN Flagon x Retriever SENOVA

Introduced in 2013 and with Provisional IBD approval, Talisman is the highest yielding variety on the list with malting potential. Agronomically the variety is generally sound but its resistance to lodging will need monitoring and so site selection and PGR programme will require thought. Talisman has begun to attract interest and we anticipate growth in market share this year.

SPRING BARLEYCONCERTO

Minstrel x Westminster NICKERSON

Concerto offers a yield potential between Quench and Tipple, disease resistance that is good although in respect of Rhynchosporium slightly weaker than Quench but similar to Tipple. Straw is short and relatively stiff and grain quality is good.

KWS IRINA Conchita x Quench KWS UK

Added to the 2015 recommended list KWS Irina has short and stiff straw and disease resistance is good, similar to most of its main competitors. Grain quality is good and yields around 5% above Propino. Already established in Europe, KWS Irina looks set to take market share from the more established varieties.

ODYSSEY Concerto x Quench LIMAGRAIN

A high-yielding variety with IBD approval. Straw is short and moderately stiff and brackling resistance is good. Disease resistance to Yellow Rust and Mildew is excellent and there are no evident weaknesses elsewhere, when compared to its main competitors. Grain quality is good with a bold sample and demand for the variety looks strong going forward.

PROPINO Quench x NFC Tipple SYNGENTA SEEDS

Added to the 2010 recommended list, Propino has full IBD approval for brewing. Straw is relatively short and stiff and disease resistance is good, similar to most of its main competitors. Propino is slightly earlier to ripen than most and with good grain quality. It has established itself quickly and is now a major malting variety, being first choice for many in the east.

CEREAL DRILLING - RATE CALCULATIONS

PROCEDURE:

STEP 1) Decide plant population per m2. Example 260 plants m2.

STEP 2) Estimate % establishment - Read across to target population, this provides number of seeds required per m2 75% establishment will give 347 seeds/m2 to be sown

STEP 3) Consult table for seeds sown per m2 by 1000 gr weight Example 1000 gr wt of 50 - this gives 175 kgs ha.

WINTER BEANSWIZARD

Wizard has become the UK’s most widely planted variety. With short, stiff straw which has eased harvesting, and higher yields than other currently available varieties Wizard looks certain to maintain its status for the near future. Resistance to Ascocytha is also good.

SPRING BEANSFUEGO

Fuego is a high-yielding type with good quality samples and is now firmly established in the export market. Downy Mildew resistance is good and straw is stiff. Having been our most popular variety it has now been overtaken by Fanfare and Vertigo.

FANFAREA new introduction in 2013, Fanfare set a new yield standard for spring beans. With no major weakness when compared to Fuego, Fanfare has continued to attract followers and to gain significant market share.

VERTIGOA new introduction last year, Vertigo raises the bar yet again for spring bean yields. With no major weakness when compared to Fuego or Fanfare, and good provisional sample feedback, Vertigo has quickly established itself as a major variety in this sector.

POLLEN AND NECTAR MIXTURE EF4 / HF4Pollen and nectar mixes tend to need matching to the soil and expected growing conditions. Average life is three years, so plots may need to be re-sown three times during a 10 year ELS / HLS agreement.

One key issue is the inclusion of some grasses. In some cases the grasses can act as a nurse crop, but they must not be allowed to dominate the plot.

BASIC BUFFER STRIP MIXFor the inner section of 6m strips this needs to be similar to:

20% Common Bent20% Crested Dogstail20% Meadow Fescue20% Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass20% Sheeps Fescue.

This would also do field corners and resource protection blocks/strips

Outer 3m can be :33.3% Timothy33.3% Cocksfoot33.3% Red Fescue

This mix would suit resource protection blocks/strips too, really depends if you want to cut and keep, if so, I would use the previous mix, it won’t get so leggy.

You could leave the Cocksfoot out altogether, it’s bound to move in.

If you want to include some wild flowers, go for Oxe Eye Daisy, Yarrow, Wild Carrot, Red Clover, Knapweed, Birds Foot Trefoil.

WALNES & SUFFOLK FWAG All of the mixtures on these pages have been compiled with the help of Suffolk FWAG. The intention is to offer informed advice from a professional body but in all cases as with any mixture confirmation of suitability to fulfil the schemes objectives should be sought from Natural England.

THE PROMISE

Walnes Seeds is committed to supporting Suffolk FWAG. We will therefore undertake to make a donation to the charity (Suffolk FWAG) for every 10 kgs of FWAG mixtures purchased from us whether by members or not. So in ordering these mixtures from us you are directly helping to support Suffolk FWAG.

Food for farmland birds needs to be tailored for the species present or those that are likely to occur. There are several ELS and HLS options that are specifically designed to benefit farmland birds including Wild bird seed mixture (EF2) and Nectar flower mixture (EF4), but there are many others that will also provide shelter and food, for example over-wintered (weedy) stubbles, margins and hedges.

FARMLAND BIRD SEED PREFERENCES The Wild bird seed mixture option involves sowing a tailored mixture of seeds that will produce a good source of seeds that provide food for birds over a long time period, and for times of the year when this option does not provide seed, there is the supplementary feeding in winter for farmland birds option (EF23).

The table of food preferences for a range of farmland birds (overleaf) shows not only the importance of seeds derived from crops such as oilseed rape and cereals and sown areas of agri-environment options, but also the importance of weed seeds that are present either during the growth of a crop or the period following harvest before the next crop is sown.

GAME COVER

MUSTARD SOW 6KG/ACRE

Versatile and easy to establish whether broadcast or drilled. Fast germination and can be sown in spring or autumn. Susceptible to hard frosts.

GAME MAIZE BLEND APPROX 45,000 SEEDS/ACRE

Very popular blend of early, medium and late maturing varieties which can provide full season cover and feed.

GIANT SORGHUM SOW 12KG/ACRE

Winter hardy and provides 3m high dense cover. Shows excellent response to nitrogen and should be drilled 4cm deep in row widths up to 75cm.

DWARF / GRAIN SORGHUMSOW 8KG/ACRE

An easy to establish vigorous hybrid growing to approx 2m in height. A short, large leaved type with good standing ability giving ideal cover and creating a warm holding area for birds.

QUINOA SOW 4KG/ACRE

Can produce up to 1000kg high protein seed per acre. This high seed yield means Quinoa is best planted with a companion crop to aid standing. Kale is usually utilised to achieve this and we can offer a mixture blended to the correct ratio.

GIANT RAPE SOW D-2.5KG B-5KG/ACRE

Quick growing cover offering an alternative to kale where rabbits and pigeons are a problem. Grows well on poorer soils.

WHITE MILLET SOW 5KG/ACRE

Mainly used in conjunction with maize or kale into which it can be cross drilled. Highly valued for its feed production. The bushy seed heads can reach one metre in height.

MILLET MIX SOW 5KG/ACRE

Very successful blend of winter hardy reed millet and white millet. This allows the mixture to be utilised through to late February. Often used as a windproof strip alongside maize and kale.

SUNFLOWER SEED SOW 5KG/ACRE

Available as black or striped, black seeded varieties tend to be shorter with greater flower production. Useful in attracting wildlife. Used to enhance other cover crops such as maize.

KALESOW D-2KG B-3KG/ACRE

Popular for gamecover. A wide range of varieties available to suit different requirements. The list is too long to put into print but we can find a variety to suit your needs.

Avatar combines high gross output with very early maturity and outstanding vigour - major benefits to growers throughout the UK

• Avatar has excellent seed yield combined with one of the highest oil contents available to give excellent gross output. The high commodity values for oilseed rape means that varieties with high oil content offer the best opportunity for increased bonuses.

• Avatar is an early maturing variety, earlier than most recommended varieties, important to spread the harvest load.

• Avatar has good stem stiffness and resistance to lodging, amongst the highest on the HGCA Recommended List and is of medium height.

• Avatar has good resistance to light leaf spot and stem canker.

• Avatar has good autumn vigour - comparable to Excalibur - and similar spring vigour and flowering time.
