CHILDREN from Catshill Middle School helped form a Guard of Honour lining the route as athletes made their way through the Olympic Park into the Olympic Stadium, for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in London on July 27th. The Catshill pupils were joined by 249 other schools from across the UK that made up the 2,000 student Guard of Honour. The youngsters held lanterns and banners that they had created to support the Somalian team. For many of the athletes this Guard of Honour was their first experience of the London 2012 Games. Catshill Middle School was selected for this prestigious event through the reward and recognition programme of the Get Set network (the official London 2012 education programme) because they had demonstrated a commitment to living the Olympic and Paralympic Values and for incorporating them into their school lives and curriculum. As well as having the opportunity to cheer on the world’s best athletes and be part of that amazing global moment, the students also got the chance to tour the Olympic Park and see some of the London 2012 venues before the world turned its attention to Danny Boyle’s wonderful Opening Ceremony in the Olympic Stadium. Staff members Mrs. Julie Pask and Mr. Dave Hewitt join the Catshill Middle School pupils proudly displaying their lanterns & banner at the Olympic opening ceremony in London.

WE are coming to the end ofquite an eventful year havingenjoyed the Queens DiamondJubilee and the Olympic Gamesheld here in Great Britain. Ourown community games held inJune on the Catshill meadowproved to be a success for thecommunity. We held a usefulVillage Showcase on Saturday22nd September and will reportin more detail in our nextnewsletter. We now have a fewfurther events to look forwardto including the annual fireworkdisplay at the meadow onSaturday 3rd November and RemembranceSunday on 11th November. It looks like our community is due toincrease in numbers with BromsgroveDistrict Council having grantedpermission for 80 new homes on land offChurch Road and 16 new dwellings onland off Cobnall Road. In addition wehave been notified of an application tobuild 8 new houses on land off Oak Road, using the site of unused garages. All ofthis will undoubtedly increase the trafficwithin the parish.

I am concerned about thecrime related incidents thathave occurred within theparish recently; if you seeanything which seemssuspicious then please contactour Community SupportOfficer Kirsten Bowkett usingthe local police number, contact details are below.Adverse weather conditionsover the summer causeddifficulties for some residentswho had to deal with flashflooding. It would appear thatthe culvert in Green Lane

cannot cope with the sheer volume ofwater on occasions such as weexperienced at the end of June! Howeverthe North Worcestershire WaterManagement team are aware of thesituation and we fully expect them toproduce an appropriate scheme fortackling the problem in the future. We are always keen to hear from youregarding any matter of community concern,so please contact us or attend any of ourmeetings which are always open to the publicGordon Witcomb

THE gun fired and 8 primed athletes set offdown the track in search of glory. The finalprize not a gold medal as offered in Londonbut a certificate confirming their support ofthe Catshill Village Fun day andCommunity Games 2012.This summer the village entered into thespirit of the Games and had an afternoon’sfun competing in some more traditionalsports such as egg and spoon race, threelegged race and space hopper racing! What you may ask was this all about? Wellthe annual fund day was being planned asusual by the North West Ward Associationwhen they were approached to see if theywere interested in combining the event witha celebration of the London 2012 Olympics.Equipment was available via lottery fundingat a National level and the Parish andCounty Councillors provided someadditional funding to support the event. The weather was set fair for the morningand it was with great anticipation that weinvited Helen Russell a locally born athleteto open the event. Helen went to CatshillMiddle School and later went on thebecome 2012 European Sprint DuathlonChampion and 2011 World Sprint DuathlonChampion, Duathlon is a very demandingevent involving a run – bike – runcombination that tests competitor’s staminato the max.Helen officially opened the event and aswith previous years the clouds instantlyopened with a torrential downpour thatlasted 15 minutes! Not that this put thecompetitors and stall holders off. There was an afternoon of fun and games onthe Meadow culminating with a tug of warcompetition which was keenly fought asthere was a pint of Tardebigge cider on offerfor each member of the winning team.Everyone who attended had a great day and

the charities and societies that had stallsraised some valuable funding. The organising committee would like topass on thanks to all the people whovolunteered to support the event both in thebuild-up and on the day. It would nothappen without your support. The NWWA will be following the sameformat next year so if you wish to a helpout or have a stall get in early and call

SEVERAL members of your parish councilwere delighted to be part of the highlysuccessful Fun Day in June. Although therewas a rainstorm right at the start, theafternoon turned out sunny and dry, and thisyear’s event was extra exciting providingsomething for all the family with the

inclusion of the community games that wereinspired by London 2012. We believe thatthis extra element not only increased thenumbers of people who attended, but alsokept those who did attend at the event forlonger than in recent years.Once again we had our stall full of usefulinformation where visitors could pop in for achat to discuss local matters over a free cupof tea or coffee. We also took the opportunityto hand out some new leaflets that explain inmore detail what we do.When chatting to people at our stall andwhilst wandering round the Meadow wewere also able to introduce ourselves andcheck that those who lived within the parishhave been receiving copies of this newsletter. Not only did everyone say that they had, butwe received several welcome compliments, and some people said that they had onlybecome aware of the Fun Day because theyhad read about it in our last newsletter.

We also sponsored the Drawing Competitionthat was open to local school children. All ofthe entries were put on display and thequality of artwork was very high. After muchdeliberation first prize was awarded toLauren Barley, who is pictured with CllrPeter Worthington who was part of thejudging panel. If you missed this year’s event, please do tryand join us next year.Cllr Paul Masters.

IN each edition we like to bring you aphotograph from the past. This editionsphotograph is not of a place, but aperson… Roy Hartle, FA Cup winner withBolton Wanderers in 1958!

Roy was born in Woodrow Lane Catshillon 4th October 1931, and went to schoolin the village, and also attended the YouthClub that was very active at the time. Roywould spend much of his childhoodplaying football with his friends on theold recreation ground playing field that isnow the Lingfield Walk / Aintree Closearea off Green Lane. After school heworked at local companies including abrief spell at the Austin motor works; butfootball was his passion. He played for Worcestershire County, andwas spotted by Bolton wanderer’s scoutswho saw him play against Staffordshire ina match played on the Bromsgrove Roverspitch. Clearly impressed with the youngplayer, the scouts went to his home thatevening, and signed him right away as anamateur. Because he was not yet a fullprofessional he also played forBromsgrove Rovers, but then after hisnational service was completed in 1952 hebecame a full-time professional footballer

for Bolton Wanderers. By 1955 he was afirst team regular as a full back; from thenuntil 1965, he missed only 20 games forthe club. At times he captained the sideand although a tough defender, was neversent off in his entire career. His playingdays with Bolton ended in 1966, havingmade 499 appearances and scoring 11 goals. Roy’s greatest sporting moment was in1958 when he was an FA Cup winnerwhen Bolton Wanderers beat ManchesterUnited 2 – 0 in the Wembley final.Roy was rewarded for his loyalty to Boltonwith a testimonial in 1969, and to this day,in recognition, Bolton’s Reebok Stadiumhas “The Roy Hartle Suite.”Sadly Roy has not enjoyed the best ofhealth in recent years having suffered astroke, but he is still fondly rememberednot only by those who knew him from hisyounger days in Catshill but by thousandsof Bolton Wanderers fans who regard himas true sporting hero. We wish him well.

We provide our service acrossWorcestershire and we are currentlylooking to train more volunteers fromyour local area.

Advocacy is a way of supporting andempowering people to ensure that theyhave their voice heard and their wishesmade known to others and we are lookingfor volunteers to provide this support intheir local area. It can involve justsupporting someone to sort paperwork outor attending hospital appointments withsomeone.Mentor & befriending volunteers areneeded to provide a supportive andreliable relationship to people who wouldotherwise be socially isolated.Opportunities are also available fortelephone befrienders and to support localgroups which focus on gardening, art, walking and social activities. We alsohave our drop in service which provideshelp for people with Autism, along withone to one support for this project.Onside’s Volunteer Co-ordinator, ClaireWatkins, said “Our volunteers provide thesupport and friendship required by the

WORCESTERSHIRE County Council has been seeking the views of residents on thefuture of Library services in Catshill as the existing library building in Barley MowLane is in a poor state of repair and will be expensive to refurbish to an acceptablestandard. Other limitations such as inadequate parking facilities, the need to use stafffrom other library sites, the limited floor area in the library, which limits the quality andrange of service and low user numbers, make the library unsustainable at its presentlocation. A co-located part time library service to an existing building is a cost effectiveand more sustainable approach but would require volunteers to come forward from thecommunity to help make it viable. Volunteers would be trained and supported byBromsgrove Library staff providing professional advice and support. It has been suggested that the new library offer could include:

• Books and magazines• A place to sit and read• PCs and Internet access• Community Centre Facilities• Youth provision• Bounce and Rhyme sessions for babies and toddlers• Children’s’ story time• Readers groups• Adult Learning Groups

The public consultation ended on 14th September and we are now awaiting the resultswhich will be presented at a feedback event on Wednesday 3rd October at CatshillMiddle School, starting at 7pm.

FOLLOWING a few changes in personnel on the parish council we are looking to co-opt 2 new members. Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for the role of parishcouncillor; you don’t need to be party-political as the only qualifications required arethat you live in the parish or within 3 miles of it, are included on the electoral registerand have not been disqualified from standing for office for any reason. We would verymuch like to hear from the under-represented members of the community such as youngpeople and women but will not rule out any applicant on the basis of age, gender, raceor religion. Parish Councillors are required to attend monthly meetings and relevantcommittee meetings, usually held on Thursday evenings at Catshill Village Hall. If youwould like to have your voice heard as a representative of your community then whynot give it a go? For further details please contact the Clerk or come along to our meetings on the lastThursday of every month (except August and December).

JUST as the last newsletter was about to be printed, the new garden at the junction of Barley Mow Laneand the Birmingham Road was planted. This nowbrings the total gardens maintained by the ParishCouncil (via a contractor) to three. They are: 1) The established Ivy Gardens; next to the IvyCottage pub, which has a mix of attractive shrubplanting along with a raised railway sleeper bedwhich has formal bedding planting each year. 2) The Diamond Jubilee Garden on the corner of Braces Lane and the BirminghamRoad which is now beautifully established and looking magnificent.3) The new garden at the top of Barley Mow Lane. This is intended to be less formalgarden, and takes the form of three circles of specially chosen shrubs that will, once fullyestablished compliment the natural wild plants that are already in the centre of this grassyarea. Although the majority of the new plants have grown over the summer, we are awarethat a few have struggled, and may need replacing. Gardens of this type often have a wayof recovering, but we will continue to monitor its progress. We have no plans to create any further gardens at present, but we do hope you willcontinue to enjoy the three we have over the coming years.
