Pupil View Every term, we will publish a story from a pupil in their own words. In this edition, it is the turn of Aisha in year 11.

On October 17, twenty-three Year 11s from different regions in London and Essex were given the opportunity to step foot in the fourth oldest surviving university that has recently been ranked number 1 best in the world.

Following my recent successful participation in the Jack Petchy ‘Speak Out!’ challenge I was offered an opportunity to visit Corpus Christi Cambridge University, with my fellow regional winners and grand finalists. It was organized by the ‘Speak Out!’ Trust and was aimed at inspiring us to aspire to one day attend universities of such pristine status’.

We travelled to Cambridge, by train where we had an opportunity to meet our fellow finalists either for the first time or the first follow up since June when the Grand Final took place. Upon arrival we had been set a busy scheduled for the day ahead involving a tour of the campus including the historic Parker Library - a treasure trove of rare medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, as well as early printed books. From this stemmed a discussion between finalists on the 6th-century Gospels of St Augustine and the oldest manuscript of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.

We were then given the pleasure of engaging in a law based debate with Professor Kenneth Armstrong entitled ‘should judges be appointed or elected’. This particular exercise was an excellent opportunity to get an understanding of law at degree level, communicated in a professional manor between a lecturer and our own peers.

The day was concluded with advice and guidance on admissions for the future if we do wish to apply to Cambridge University and talks with undergraduates about general uni life – leaving us with a big decision for the future. Aisha, Year 11

It was a busy half term in the Sophia Duleep Singh Library. We started off the term by welcoming our new year-7 cohort, who have now become ardent users of the library. Especially year-7 pupils Ali Abdelmutalib and Ninoshka Poll, who have borrowed the highest number of library books in Year 7. Well done! In the second week of the term the library hosted three workshops for pupils as part of a Women’s History Week being held in the library. Pupils attended workshops led by Ark Elvin’s Ms Movsisyan, a history researcher from the University of Warwick, Sue Lemos, and author and frequent Cambridge University lecturer, Shahida Rahman.

For the final week of the Half Term the library was transformed in to an open exhibit for Black History Month. The exhibit, curated by the

Pupil Librarian team, allowed pupils and staff to interact with displays, art work and photography that explored areas of Black British History. The exhibit included archival resources loaned to the library as well as work produced by pupils. Finally, I would like to celebrate our new Pupil Librarian team, who have made an excellent start to the year and are providing our school with a friendly and professional library service. Congratulations! The pupils have returned from the summer holidays and greeted the library with an overwhelmingly positive and community-centred attitude. What a fantastic start to the new academic year. Mr Jenner Librarian

Lunchtime Music Charity Concert raises over £100 for charity

Pupils in Years 7 - 10 participated in a Lunchtime Charity concert. The concert featured a range of acts including solo singing acts, piano solos and our beautiful Elvin choir. Through our cake sale and concert, we raised £110 and proceeds are going to two important charities - Breast Cancer Care and the British Skin Foundation.

Thank you to all pupils who took part or attended the concert.

Year 11 have made a strong start to their final year at Elvin. In the first half-term, we have already achieved so much. We have elected our Student Council members, defeated the Year 10 team in football and spent copious hours in the study room preparing for our GCSEs.

On Saturday the 15th of September, Ubaid, Bandana, Pratistha, Romell and Yash went to UCL’s “It’s all Academic’ Festival. They sat in a lecture with a panel of UCL experts, toured the hidden history of UCL’s campus and tested how clean their phones were at the top Russell Group University. We hope that next year, more Elvin students will follow in their footsteps.

Ms Flanagan led a trip to Imperial College London on the 5th of October for the lecture ‘Staying in rhythm: The trials and fibrillations of a heartbeat’. Our students heard Professor Prapa Kanagaratnam describe new diagnostic approaches to types of heart rhythm problems to stretch them in their upcoming Biology exams.

On October 17th, Aisha was able to visit Cambridge University. Following her recent successful participation in the Jack Petchy ‘Speak Out!’ challenge, she travelled to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University, with her fellow regional winners and grand finalists. We are incredibly proud of her success.

As our Year 11 students approach this half-term, they will continue to prepare for their upcoming AP1 exams, their college and sixth form applications and planning for our Yearbook and Prom. We will continue to run interventions before and after school to support students in every subject. The gym will open for Year 11 students after school so they are able to exercise their bodies as well as their minds.

I look forward to reporting back on the achievements of Year 11 in Autumn. Ms Noronha, Head of Year 11

In order to develop our students’ passions, foster their creativity and develop their leadership skills the academy runs a dynamic enrichment programme. Students have an option of choosing from a variety of clubs, academic, sporting or creative. The programme is split into Core enrichment for KS3, and Open enrichment for all pupils. Core Enrichment

The programme runs every Thursday Period 6 for KS3 only. Students will select their enrichment activity at the start of each full term. The enrichment will be on pupils’ timetables. Open Enrichment The scheduled programme will run every day after school from 15:30 – 16:30. These activities run on a turn up and join in basis unless the activity is invite only.

Safeguarding Update

Our Safeguarding Team

Lyn Brooks Designated Safeguarding Lead

Holly Peter Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead

The role of the Safeguarding Team at Ark Elvin is to provide an environment that is safe and secure for our pupils, parents and staff. If you or your child is ever worried about anything they can speak to any member of staff at the school.

Place2Be We are also fortunate to have a service in school called Place2Be which is a counselling service for young people. Pupils can self-refer for one-to-one sessions with a counsellor to discuss any topics. If your child would like to have a session all they will need to do is complete a Place2Talk slip and place in the red boxes (located at Student Services and The Library). This is a fabulous service for advice and support around your child’s Mental Health.

Medicines It is important that we are able to support any pupil that has a medical condition. If your child does have a medical condition please ensure that we have any medication that they will need to take; this includes inhalers, antihistamines etc. Parents/ carers must bring the medication into school and complete a form to say what dosage should be taken and when. If you child is ill and is on temporary medication, this should also be handed into Student Services.

If you have any questions about Safeguarding at Ark Elvin, or you are concerned about your child, please contact Ms Brooks at [email protected] or call on 020 8902 6362. For more information about our Safeguarding Policy please visit our website.

Attendance Reminder Attendance at school is one of the most important factors in ensuring that a child is academically successful. Poor attendance generally leads to poor grades. Here are some of the ways you can support us to ensure your child has excellent attendance:

• We expect pupils to arrive at school on time by 8.25am at the latest. Late arrivals disrupt the education of others as well as your child’s. Pupils arriving after the register has closed will be marked as having an unauthorised absence and will receive a sanction;

• Avoid medical and dental appointments during school time; • We do not expect pupils to come to school when they are sick, but parents of children with

regular sickness absence will be expected to provide us with medical evidence before we authorise further absences;

• Do not book holidays during term time – this is illegal; We will refer parents who take pupils on holiday during term time to the Brent Education Welfare Service

• You will receive a call by 10am if your child is not in school. This helps to make sure your child is safe.

• We will authorise one day only of absence for religious holidays.
