1750 ✉ Whaling Mail, 1832 scarce early two-page letter without outer sheet, headed “Oahu Nov. 13th 1832” written and
signed by Capt. Joseph Fitch of the whaler “Superior” to his employers N. & W.W. Billings at New London,
Connecticut with filing notation, providing an account of his voyage and requesting money for the hire of natives,
slight damp stains. In January 1835 Fitch, a prodigious seaman who had risen to command from the lowly position of
a cooper’s mate and who had notably carried out the successful amputation of a crewman’s leg whilst at sea, was killed
on board the “Superior” as the result of an explosion of gunpower, aged 35. Photo. £180-£200

markings, headed “Oahu Nov. 22 1835”, written to his employers and signed by Erastus Saunders of the whaler
“Superior” with filing notation, providing a fascinating account of his voyage and its various ‘misfortunes’. Saunders,
mate of the “Superior” at the time of Capt Joseph Fitch's death fathfully followed Finch’s instructions to complete the
