2013 Toyota Tundra: Shuttle-strong, family friendlyYou may have seen the

television commercial in which the Toyota Tundra tows the U.S. space shuttle Endeavor. That was a 2012 model that transported the retired space vehicle from Los Angeles Internation-al Airport to the California Science Center across the Manchester Bridge. Endeav-or weighed in at 292,500 lbs. and the Tundra workhorse was straight stock, a Crew-Max with a 6.5-foot bed and the same standard 381-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 that its sister Tundras roll off the San Antonio assembly line with.

The good news for truck fans, towing enthusiasts and space shuttle aficionados is that the 2013 Toyota Tundra remains largely the same as last year, but with enhanced comfort and cosmetics.

The Platinum Package, which was available for the Tundra CrewMax Limited model in 2012, is now a full model grade offering such luxury features as heated and ventilated front bucket seats with embroidered headrests and driver’s seat two-posi-tion memory feature, per-forated leather-trimmed seating surfaces, power tilt/slide moonroof with sliding sunshade, and wood-grain-style interior trim.

Multiple configurationsThe full-size pickup is of-

fered in three grades (Tun-dra, Limited and Platinum), three cab styles (Regular, Double Cab and Crew Max), 2x4 and 4x4 drive setups, three wheelbase lengths (126.8, 145.7 and 164.6 inch-es, depending on model and configuration) and three bed lengths (78.7 inches, 97.6 and for CrewMax only, 66.7 inches). The hard-working, hard-playing Tundra also offers three engine choices, a 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6, a 310-horsepower 4.6-liter V-8, and the shuttle-towing 5.7-liter V-8 with 381 horsepower. These selec-tions give Tundra the ability

to deal with tough work sit-uations while being a fam-ily truck for play or luxury/comfort needs.

My test Tundra Crew Max Platinum measured 228.7 inches long with a standard bed. My Tundra’s width was 79.9 inches, height was 76.0 inches and the wheelbase measured 145.7 inches. The bed depth was 22.2 inches and inside width at the tail-gate was 66.4 inches — 50 inches between the wheel wells — while ground clear-ance measured 10.4 inches.

Tundra Crew Max Plat-inum’s Curb weight was a sturdy 5625 lbs. and towing capacity is generally 9000 lbs. with a tongue weight of 1010 lbs., space shuttle ac-commodations notwith-standing.

Shuttle-pulling powerLike the Endeavor-tow-

ing model, my test ride was powered by the 5.7-liter DOHC EFI V-8, 32-valve aluminum block engine with aluminum alloy head and Dual VVT-I. The sys-tem produces 381 hp and 401 lbs.-ft. of torque, and runs on 87-octane fuel, though it is E85 capable. My 4x4 test truck was EPA rated at 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. Without towing any NASA spacecrafts, I averaged 15.3 mpg during a week of mixed-use driving in snow and rain.

The low-end torque that was exhibited in the shut-tle-pull is also evidenced in off-the-line accelera-tion, as I was able to sprint this 2.8-ton workhorse from zero-to-60 mph in 6.3 sec-onds during a 15-second flat quarter-mile run. On

the highway, acceleration is smooth and so is the sus-pension.

Tundra’s rack-and-pin-ion hydraulic power steering with fluid cooler is some-what heavy and vague, so Tundra is not an auto-cross champion, and quick turn-ing causes some body roll, but stopping power is secure and the Independent high-mounted double-wishbone front suspension with sta-bilizer bar and low pressure nitrogen gas shock absorb-ers, along with a live axle rear accompanied by trapezoid multi-leaf springs and in-board-mounted low-pres-sure nitrogen gas shock ab-sorbers are responsive and leveling.

Tundra’s Power-assisted four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System with Electronic Brake force Distribution, Brake As-sist, Traction Control, Ve-hicle Stability Control, and Active Traction Control all work together to make this a

driver’s vehicle and a confi-dent and comfortable pas-senger truck.

Spacious ergonomic interior

With seating capacity for five or six, Tundra’s interior is well thought out and driv-er/passenger friendly. Tun-dra’s U-shaped “command and control” center provides good sightlines while keep-ing all controls within easy reach, and the cabin is spa-cious. Tundra’s Crew Max Cab provides 40.2 inches for front headroom and 38.7 inches for rear cab passen-gers. Legroom is 42.5 inches up front and a spacious 44.5 for second-row passengers and shoulder room goes 66.6 and 65.4 inches.

Interior features include standard dual-zone air con-ditioning with a replaceable dust and pollen filter and high solar energy-absorbing glass that helps filter solar heat and most UV light en-

ergy entering the vehicle.Tundra’s safety system

includes Smart Stop brake override technology that re-duces engine power auto-matically under certain con-ditions, helping the driver bring the vehicle to a stop. Tundra also features stan-dard front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear roll-sensing side curtain airbags as well as driver and front outboard passenger Advanced Airbag System, and driver and front out-board passenger knee air-bags.

2013 Toyota Tundras start at $26,350 for a regular cab with 4.0-liter V-6 engine, short bed and 2-wheel drive, and move up to $29,860 for a Double Cab with 4.6-li-ter engine and $39,350 for

a Crew Max. The Platinum trim increases the MSRP to $43,795. A skid resis-tant bedliner with deck rails added $365, a cargo net added $49, bed step added $300, exhaust tip was $99, all-weather floor mats add-ed $100, door sill protectors added $165 and Navigation with JBL audio added $3880. Add $995 for handling and delivery and the final sticker was $49,699.
