Acura’s RDX moves mainstreamBy ANN M. JOBFor ThE ASSociATEd PrESS

Redesigned for 2013, the Acura RDX compact sport utility vehi-cle is slightly larger, with a more compliant ride, than its predeces-sor and has more power than ever while beating the popular Lexus RX 350 in fuel economy ratings.

The new RDX also has more front- and rear-seat legroom than a Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV and much more cargo space.

Better still, the revamped-for-2013 RDX is a recommended buy of Consumer Reports magazine, where it ranks above average in ex-pected reliability.

Pricing is increased an average $1,013 across the four 2013 RDX models from 2012 prices, and the top RDX — with all-wheel drive and technology package — now is just over $40,000.

Specifically, starting manufac-turer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, for a base, 2013 RDX is $35,215. This is a front-wheel drive RDX with 273-horsepower V-6 and all the stan-dard amenities, such as leather-covered seats, heated front seats, moonroof, rearview camera, key-less access, push-button start, 360-watt audio system, Pandora Internet radio interface and SMS text messaging system. The lowest starting MSRP, including destina-tion charge, for an all-wheel drive, 2013 RDX is $36,615.

But even with the price increase, the RDX remains one of the most affordable of smaller-sized, five-seat, luxury-branded SUVs.

As an example, the starting retail price for a 2013 Lexus RX 350 with 270-horsepower V-6 and front-wheel drive is $40,205, while an all-wheel drive, 2013 RX 350 starts at $41,605. The RX 350 is the best-selling, smaller-sized, luxury SUV in the United States. Meantime, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK has a starting retail price of $37,995 and comes standard with 302-horsepower V-6 and all-wheel drive.

Some fans of the first-genera-tion RDX, which came to market

in 2006 with a turbocharged four cylinder and a firmer ride that lent itself to sporty handling, might grumble over the changes for 2013.

But sales of the RDX peaked at 23,367 in 2007 and totaled just 15,196 in calendar 2011, which in-dicated that there’s not a big mar-ket for a sporty-handling, turbo, compact SUV.

And by making the RDX more mainstream — with a smooth-performing V-6 instead of some-times jerky turbo power and with a comfortable, refined ride that makes everything from city streets to concrete highways more toler-able — Acura is broadly expanding this SUV’s appeal.

The pleasing ride was one of the first things noticed in the test RDX AWD Tech model priced at $40,315.

The new RDX suspension, along with slightly wider track and lon-ger wheelbase, managed even potholes with ease, removed the sharpness of speed bump un-dulations and smoothed out the “whomps” of expansion cracks on bridges.

A three-hour drive on highways and country roads in the quiet RDX interior was fatigue-free on nice-ly supportive but not overly firm front seats. Driver and passenger remarked the trip could have gone on without a problem.

The suspension —MacPherson struts up front and a multilink de-sign in back — use new dampers that will be put in other new Acu-ras.

These amplitude-reactive dampers are new to Acura and have a two-valve design that basi-cally acts like two suspension sys-tems. One is “soft” in situations such as small bumps and smooth roads and the other is firm, for big bumps and during aggressive cor-nering.

The driver, however, does noth-ing to activate these dampers, which work automatically.

Horsepower is boosted by 33 in the new RDX because of the 3.5-li-ter, single overhead cam V-6. This is the same engine that’s in the Honda Odyssey. Honda is Acura’s

parent company.Peak torque of 251 foot-pounds

at 5,000 rpm from the V-6 is a bit less than the 260 foot-pounds at 4,500 rpm from last year’s 2.3-li-ter, turbo four cylinder.

But the test 2013 RDX moved forward with spunk and merged well into traffic.

Powe r c a m e o n s m o o t h ly through the new six-speed auto-matic transmission that includes paddle shifters on the steering wheel for drivers who want to ex-perience some sporty shifts.

Sounds from the V-6 also were quieter and less frenetic than those that came from the turbo four.

Most impressively, the tes-ter with AWD delivered nearly 24 miles per gallon in combined driv-ing that was some 70 percent at highway speeds and 30 percent on city streets.

This is in part because of a fuel-saving, engine cylinder deactiva-tion system that worked seam-lessly in the test RDX to shut down cylinders that weren’t needed at times.

Plus, the new RDX is more aero-dynamic in its styling and weighs some 600 pounds less than the Lexus RX 350.

No wonder, then, that the fed-eral government’s fuel economy rating of 19/27 mpg for a 2013 RDX FWD is better than the 19/24-mpg rating for last year’s four-cylinder RDX.

And it’s higher than the 18/25-mpg rating for the 2013 Lexus RX 350 FWD.

The tester’s mileage gave a 380-mile range on a single tank, and while premium gasoline is recom-mended, it is not required.

Inside, the new RDX instru-

ment gauges are a bit less sporty and more mainstream than before, which fits nicely with the new per-sonality.

Most notable are the sizable but-tons and controls on the center part of the dashboard. There’s no hunting to find tiny knobs or sub-tly indented buttons.

The rearview camera comes standard with yellow lines that depict the width of the RDX along its projected, rearward path as the vehicle backs up.

Front and rear legroom of 42 inches and 38.3 inches is better than what’s in the Mercedes GLK, especially the GLK’s 35.1 inches of back-seat legroom.

The RDX bests the GLK in car-go space, too, offering 76.9 cubic feet behind with rear seats folded vs. just 54.7 cubic feet in the Mer-cedes.

All about cars

2012 Audi A6 3.0T: Mid-size luxury sedan upscales Audi’s executive luxury mid-size

sedan, the A6, is the No.4-sell-ing luxury vehicle in America, and has begun its fourth generation with the same liquid style, elegant lines, power, pampering and per-formance that epitomized the first three versions.

Beginning as a cloned Audi 5000 in 1994, the A6 fills the mid-size portion of Audi’s executive line, complimenting the full-size A8 and looking quite like its smaller sibling, the A4.

Manufactured in Neckarsulm, Baden Wuertemberg, Germany, the 2012 Audi A6 has sculpted its shoulders, added raised door han-dles, tweaked the previous gener-ation’s grille, headlights, and tail-lights and increased its wheelbase by nearly 3 inches. And that’s just the exterior. Inside, A6 has up-scaled with available oak trim, in-creased ambience and grace, and added a large information screen and optional heads-up display. Power is also increased and han-dling has been fine-tuned even further.

Increased aerodynamicsThe A6 architecture is new-

ly conceived, with an extended wheelbase to shorten overhangs, which has created a more perfor-mance-oriented look while deliv-ering improved ride quality and interior space. Its sloped roofli-ne increases aerodynamics and sporty driving characteristics, and the manufacturer’s use of high-efficiency diode lasers to weld the roof to the side panel frame struc-ture has generated a sleek “zero joint” seam. All of this has helped reduce A6’s drag coefficient to 0.26Cd.

A6’s galvanized steel body uti-lizes an aluminum hood and front fenders to save weight, and comes in at a curb weight of 4045 lbs. -- 78 lbs. lighter than the previ-ous generation. With a multi-step anti-corrosion protection system employed within the construction (12-year limited warranty against corrosion perforation), A6 deliv-ers extra luxury touches from the body up. Measuring 193.9 inches long, 73.8 inches wide and 57.8 inches high on a 114.7-inch wheel-base, the mid-size A6 is sleek and

offers 4.6 inches of ground clear-ance.

Turbocharged powerAudi A6 is graceful on the out-

side and powerfully efficient un-der the hood. The 2.0T sedan is equipped with a 4-cylinder 211hp/258 lbs-ft. 2.0 liter turbo-charged engine. My 3.0T Premi-um utilizes a 3.0-liter TFSI su-percharged V-6, generating 310 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque with an eight-speed Tiptronic® transmis-sion. The manufacturer says the 2.0 will sprint from zero to 60mph in 7.5 seconds, and my test 3.0T V-6, supercharged, with spark-igni-tion direct injection and a 130mph speed governor, completed the dash in 5.4 seconds en route to a 13.8-second quarter-mile. EPA es-timates are 19 city/28 highway/22 average for the 3.0T and my test A6 averaged 20.4 mpg in mixed-use driving. The 2.0 is rated at 25/33/28.

A6 is a driver’s car with respon-sive electromechanical steering and exceptional balance. Its mod-ular longitudinal platform aids stability and in extreme hairpins and softer twisties, the previous generation’s understeer has been diminished significantly.

A6 accelerates deftly with su-percharged low-torque power and has good high-range abil-ity as well. The five-link front suspension with an anti roll bar, twin-tube-gas-filled shock ab-sorbers and trapezoidal-link rear with twin-tube-gas-filled shock absorbers is a bit loose, but confi-dently smoothes road irregulari-ties.

Braking is self-assured with the electronic stability program, anti-lock brakes and electronic rear brake pressure proportioning.

Wraparound cabin designThe wraparound skyline cock-

pit is indulgent with exquisite fit and finish, a bevy of advanced communication technologies, ambient lighting , keyless start, ergonomic seats with power lumbar up front, leather seating surfaces (partial leather), three zone automatic air conditioning and metallic accents, including chrome bezels framing air vents.

The cabin is also spacious with seating for five -- 37.2 inches of front headroom and 37.8 inches in the second row, 41.3 inches of legroom in row one and 37.4 in row two, with shoulder room of 57.5 and 56.3.

From a safety perspective A6 is attentive as more than 4,000 crash simulations were carried out to ensure that each compo-nent is designed and manufac-tured to exacting standards. A6 safety items include a front-end crumple zone carefully con-structed to absorb energy from

frontal impact and the engine and front axle divert energy to a fortified floor and tunnel struc-ture. Also included are an adap-tive restraint system, side and curtain airbags, Audi pre sense that initiates protective measures if it detects an imminent colli-sion, adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, and systems that warn the presence of other vehicles and activate if a rear-end impact appears imminent.

The 2012 Audi A6 2.0 starts at $42,200. The 3.0T in Premium trim starts at $50,400 with des-tination charges of $895. My test vehicle’s upgrades included a $5900 Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 1,300 watts of power, 15 speakers, subwoofer and center speaker, acoustic lens technolo-gy, Digital Signal Processing and ICE power digital amplification. Also onboard was the $5800 In-novation Package that included adaptive cruise control, Audi pre-sense plus collision prepared-

ness system, Audi side assist blind-spot monitoring system, LED headlights, head-up display, Night Vision Assistant infrared camera and heated, power-fold-ing, auto-dimming exterior mir-rors with memory. The final add-on was the $1500 19-Inch Sport Package that replaced the stan-dard 17-inch wheels with 19-inch 15-spoke wheels covered by 255/40R19 performance tires and utilized a sport suspension and three-spoke multifunction steer-ing wheel with shift paddles. The options made for a final sticker-as-tested of $64,495, but incen-tives are available at local dealers.
