When the British Mo-tor Corporation launched the Morris M ini M inor in 1959, and developed a brand that included the Countryman, Moke and C l u b m a n , t h ey h a d n o idea that the Mini would become an enduring sym-bol of its beginning era. It gained iconic status in the 1960s and its space-saving front-wheel-drive layout influenced a gen-eration of car-makers. In 1999, the Mini was voted the second-most influ-ential automobile of the 20th century, behind the Ford Model T. The original two-door Mini continued in production until 2000 and the new generation car was launched in 2001.

British Motor Corpora-tion merged with British Motor Holdings in 1966 and then merged with Le-yland Motors in 1968 to become British Leyland. This UK icon became its own badge in 1968 (the M I N I ) a n d i n 1 9 8 8, a s part of the Leyland’s Rov-er Group, was purchased by British Aerospace. By 1994, MINI left the Union Jack behind as the Group was acquired by BMW, wh i c h h a s ke p t M I N I , while breaking up the rest of the Group.

Still Built in EnglandIn 2012, the MINI Road-

ster continues the pay a l l e g i a n ce to i ts B r i t -ish roots, as the Roadster in all its incarnations, as well as the MINI Hardtop, M I N I C l u b m a n , M I N I Co nve r t i b l e a n d M I N I Coupe are all produced in Great Britain, at the as-sembly plant near Oxford, the press shop in Swindon and the Hams Hall engine factory. While owned by BMW, MINI is England’s third-largest carmaker.

My test MINI was the Cooper S Roadster, and t h i s c o m p a c t e m b o d -ies fun driving, from its classical MINI lines to its powerful engine and hall-mark handling.

The MINI Roadster’s trademark architecture includes a sweeping sil-houette, with the tran-sition from soft-top to rear end highlighting its characteristic three-box design. This layout en-compasses a clear visu-al separation of the car’s trunk (boot, in England) from the passenger com-partment, while a wide through-loading system

behind the seats enhances practicality.

Measuring 147 inches long, 66.3 inches wide and 54.7 inches high on a 97.1-inch wheelbase, M I N I t u r n s h ea d s a n d gains smiles from onlook-ers. With a turning circle of 35.1 inches and 5.3-inch ground clearance, MINI is a driver’s car that can ma-neuver deftly, and move its 2800 lbs. (curb weight) quickly.

Three engine choicesThe MINI Roadster of-

fers a choice of three pow-erful and efficient engines. The model lineup rang-es from the MINI Coo-per Roadster (121 hp) and MINI Cooper S Roadster (181 hp), to the muscular 208 hp MINI John Cooper Works Roadster. My test Cooper S was outfitted with the Inline-4, turbo-charged 1.6-liter engine that pops 181 horsepow-er at 5,500 rpm and a ro-bust 192 lbs-ft of torque at a low 1,700 rpm, with a 6,500-rpm redline. Mat-

ed to a six-speed gearbox, t h e re i s a n a b u n d a n ce of power that responds when called for, and en-gine growl that reminds us of the open-coupes of the 1960s.

On the track, the MINI Cooper S blasted the zero to 60 mph sprint in only 6.9 seconds, and managed a 15.3-second quarter-mile. During autocross trials, my MINI showed precise rack-and-pinion steering with little body roll. While you do get un-dersteer during the tight-est maneuvers from the f ro n t - d r ive C o p p e r S, road and highway tests s h owe d co m p l i a n ce i n nearly all situations. The aerodynamic balance of the MINI Roadster is op-timized by an active rear spoiler which extends au-tomatically when the car reaches 50 mph.

T h e e n g i n e se t - u p i s EPA rated at 35/27/30, and my tests showed an aver-age of 29.6mpg.

Comfortable cabinFeeling cozy yet larger

inside than one would ex-pect, MINI Cooper S af-fords shoulder room of 50.3 inches, leg room of 41.7 inches and headroom of 39.6 inches.

The well-appointed cab-in is accented by a large center speedometer and a

tachometer positioned di-rectly behind the steering wheel. The sports seats offer outstanding lateral support through quickly taken corners. Making the interior homey are such accouterments as leath-er sport steering wheel, black checkered dash, air conditioning, speed-sen-sitive steering assistance, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, height-adjustable seats, MP3-compatible CD player and AUX IN connection, Park Distance Control, Com-fort Access and the inno-vative MINI Connected infotainment system.

From a safety perspec-tive, MINI scores with advanced crumple zone engineering, active roll-over protection bar, crash sensor system, front and head-thorax airbags, an ex t re m e ly r i g i d w i n d -sc re e n f ra m e , E l e c t r i c Power Steering, Dynamic Stability Control, and D y n a m i c T ra c t i o n C o n t r o l w i t h

Electronic Differential Lock Control.

MINIs are priced and presented in many forms. T h e C o o p e r H a r d t o p starts at $20,400 (with 121 hp); the Cooper S hardtop starts at $24,000 (with 181hp); and the John Coo-per Works Hardtop starts at $30,600 (with 208hp). C o n ve r t i b l e s s t a r t a t $25,850 for the Cooper, $28,850 for the Cooper S (as was my test car), and $35,800 for the John Coo-per Works. In all, there are some 21 base configura-tions. My Cooper S Con-vertible test ride added a $500 Lightning Blue exte-rior paint coat; the $1750 Premium Package (au-tomatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, comfort accesso-ries, chrome line interior,

keyless entry and alarm system) and the $2500 Technology Package (nav-igation, 10-speaker/480-w a t t H a r m a n K a r d o n d i g i ta l s o u n d sys te m , Sirius XM, MINI Con -nected, Bluetooth and an HD display screen). With destination and handling charges of $700, and mi-nus dealer discounts, my test MINI Copper S stick-ered at $33,100.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 roadster is faster, more fuel efficient, bigger and yet significantly light-er than its predecessor and aggressively styled on the outside to evoke SLs of the 1950s.

But the high-tech and luxury features of this new, sixth-generation SL could bring buyers to showrooms, too.

After all, who wouldn’t want to impress a friend or neighbor with a 0-to-60 sprint that takes just 4.5 seconds? And how about the active side seat bolsters that automatically hug pas-sengers more tightly as the car takes turns?

The faster acceleration comes from a 429-horse-power, twin-turbo, direct-injection, gasoline V-8 that replaced last year’s 382-horsepower, naturally aspi-rated V-8.

The active seat bolsters aren’t dependent on speed. They instantly inflate and press forcefully - and un-nervingly for a first-time passenger - to keep a person in place any time the steer-ing wheel is moved appre-ciably.

Best of all, the SL550 has improved fuel mileage. The U.S. government gives the 2013 model a city rating of 16 miles per gallon, with highway travel rated at 24 mpg. The test SL was spot on with the government’s combined city/highway rat-ing of 19 mpg, affording a range of 375 miles.

Note the 2013 mileage is up from the 2012 SL550’s 14/22-mpg rating and is better than the 15/22-mpg rating for Jaguar’s two-seat XKR convertible.

Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, for a base, rear-wheel drive, 2013 SL550 is $106,405, an increase of $1,890 from the 2012 price.

Standard on every 2013 SL

are seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for shift-it-your-self mode; a fuel-saving, engine stop/start system; seats trimmed with leath-er that’s specially treated to reflect the sun’s heat and, over time, reduce sun dam-age; a retractable, hard sun-roof that’s a heat-reflecting panel; dual-zone, automatic climate control; bi-xenon headlamps that swivel in turns and curves to illumi-nate the road ahead, and 12-way, power-adjustable and heated seats.

A long list of safety fea-tures go beyond the usual air bags - there are eight in the SL - and antilock brakes.

For example, the SL550’s brakes include automatic drying that activates when-ever windshield wipers are turned on. This feature keeps brakes ready for max-imum work when roads are wet.

There also are high-beam headlights that use a camera to automatically adjust the range of the lights depend-ing on the proximity of oth-er cars.

Competitors to the SL in-clude the rear-wheel drive, 2012 Jaguar XKR convertible with 510-horsepower, su-percharged V-8, automatic transmission and soft roof, which starts at $104,375.

Meanwhile, the rear-

wheel drive, 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet with 400-horsepower, horizon-tally opposed, six-cylinder engine, seven-speed manu-al transmission and soft-top roof has a starting MSRP, i n c l u d i n g d e s t i n a t i o n charge, of $108,950. And a new Porsche 911 Carrera S has a retail starting price of $113,030.

The new SL550 exteri-or styling is busy, for sure. There seem to be lines and swirls in the body every-where, save for the rear end which, in contrast, seems a bit plain.

The stand-up grille in front especially evokes the early SLs.

One thing that’s not obvi-ous: Most of the SL550 body shell is made of aluminum for the first time. Steel is primarily found inside the window pillars. The lighter aluminum accounts for the loss of some 240 pounds from the previous SL. In-deed, the 2013 base car weighs in at less than 4,000 pounds.

The car looks good with hard top on and off. Mer-cedes boasts the compli-cated, power-operated ma-neuvering of the roof and rear window takes just 16 seconds. A driver only has to touch a button.

Roof storage reduces trunk room from 10.2 cubic feet to

7.2 cubic feet.The SL550’s newfound

power can be addictive. It came on so smoothly and strongly in the test car that the driver typically was go-ing 20 mph faster than ex-pected.

The new engine - a 4.6-liter, double overhead cam, direct-injection V-8 - has twin turbos providing 13.1 pounds per square inch of boost.

Torque, that “oomph” feeling of being propelled forward forcefully, is plen-tiful in this car and comes on quickly. Peak torque is a hearty 516 foot-pounds starting at a low 1,800 rpm and continues to 3,500 rpm.

Even though Mercedes in-stalled a start/stop system in the new SL that turns off the engine automatically to save fuel at stops, the test car got under way as soon as pressure on the brake pedal lightened, and it beat every-one away from stoplights. The start/stop worked seamlessly in the tester and was nothing like start/stop systems in earlier, lesser ve-hicles where the engine al-most seemed to stall as it got going again.

Engine sounds were deep and confident, but steering, while direct, required a bit too light an effort at times.

It was weird not having “Park” on the gearshifter. Instead, a driver must push a button at the base of the gearshift lever to put the car in “Park.”

Controls in the SL550 take some getting used to, though buttons are decently sized.

In the tester, seat leather was luxurious to the touch, carpeting was thick, and fit and finish was excellent.

Extras can be costly. The test car came with nearly $18,000 of options, includ-ing seats with the active bol-sters plus a massage feature, a roof panel that changes transparency and adjustable body control suspension. Even the rearview camera was optional.

In Focus

For most of us, driving is a necessity, and so is doing it as cost-effectively as possi-ble - even in retirement when most of us stay in our subur-ban homes. Saving money on automobile-related expens-es like gas and insurance can h e l p f re e u p ca s h fo r o t h e r important things.

Fo r t u n a te ly, m a ny ta c t i c s can help you minimize vehicle costs, from doing basic main-tenance tasks yourself to tak-ing a driver safety course that could qualify you for insur-ance discounts. The driving experts at AARP recommend drivers 50 and older focus on three key areas of opportunity for cost-reduction:

InsuranceO l d e r d r i v e r s h a v e l o w -

e r ra te s o f p o l i ce - re p o r te d crashes per capita, limit their driving to familiar routes and b e t t e r w e a t h e r, a n d d r i v e fewe r m i l e s t h a n o t h e r a ge groups, but accident rates per m i l e s ta r t i n c rea s i n g wh e n drivers reach 70, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Even if your p e rs o n a l d r i v i n g re c o rd i s clean, your age may put you in a demographic that insurance companies view as higher risk - and you’ll pay higher auto insurance premiums because of it.

S h o p p i n g a ro u n d fo r a u to insurance may help you se-cure a better rate, but if you’re facing very high premiums, it may make sense to take an extra step. Many insurers of-fer discounts to drivers who complete driver safety cours-es. Check with your insurance company to see if such a dis-count is available to you, then look for a program, like AARP Driver Safety’s course, that is specifically designed to help people 50 and older refresh their driving skills and adapt to age-related changes. There

a re n o te s ts to ta ke fo r t h e course. To find an in-person course near you, visit www.aarp.org/findacourse, or sign up for an online course.

Fuel efficiencyA f te r i n s u ra n c e , f u e l c a n

be one of the highest costs of

operating a vehicle, especially for those who travel far, such as older drivers commuting from winter to summer resi-dences. Car makers have im-proved overall fuel efficiency for many newer vehicles, but you can take steps to cut your gas costs more - even if you

have an older car.AARP offers these tips for

improving fuel efficiency:• L i g h t e n t h e l o a d . T h e

heavier your vehicle and con-tents, the more gas it will con-sume moving down the road. Remove excess weight from the trunk and avoid travel -ing with luggage or bike racks

that create drag, add weight and decrease fuel economy.

• Watch your speed. While it’s important to safely keep pace with the flow of traffic around you, keep in mind most cars are at the optimum fuel efficiency around 50 mph.

• D r ive s m o o t h ly. A b r u p t stops and starts, and fast, er-ratic movements in traffic all decrease fuel economy.

• Try to consolidate trips. Rather than making one trip to the grocery store today, then the doctor’s office tomorrow and your book club the next day, try to group errands to-ge t h e r. S ta r t i n g a co l d e n -gine consumes more gas than keeping it running longer.

MaintenanceWith the average age of cars

o n t h e roa d a p p roa c h i n g 1 1 years, according to R.L. Polk & Co., an automotive market research firm, routine mainte-nance is more important than ever. Doing simple tasks like oil changes, windshield wip-er replacement and air filter changes yourself can help save you money.

Ta s k s t h a t yo u c a n ea s i ly perform yourself include:

• Changing the oil and oil filter.

• Changing the air filter.• Monitoring tire inflation

and adding air if needed.• C h e c k i n g a n d c l e a n i n g

battery connections.• Replacing worn windshield

wipers.• R e p l a c i n g h e a d l i g h t o r

brake light bulbs.Other DIY tasks, like replac-

ing brake pads or sparkplugs, or flushing the radiator, re-quire a bit more know-how. Fortunately, plenty of online resources offer step-by-step guides for doing more com-p l e x v e h i c l e m a i n t e n a n c e ta s ks. A n d , yo u ca n a lways check with your local com-munity college to see if they o f fe r a b a s i c a u to m a i n te -nance course.
