Lincoln a fuel-miser

Luxury car buyers don’t have to pay a premium to get a hybrid anymore.

The first gasoline-elec-tric-powered hybrid at Lincoln dealerships, the 2011 MKZ Hybrid, has the same sticker price as the gasoline-only, 2011 MKZ _ $35,180. But it’s the hybrid version of MKZ that can de-liver more miles from every gallon of gas. Virtual flowers and leaves “grow” on a col-orful display in the instru-ment cluster as feedback for fuel-efficient driving.

The newest MKZ, which is a sibling of the Ford Fu-sion Hybrid, also ranks as the most fuel-efficient lux-ury sedan in America, even topping longtime hybrid seller Lexus. The federal government fuel efficiency rating for the MKZ Hybrid is 41 miles per gallon in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway, compared with the 35/34-mpg rating given to the 2011 Lexus 250h.

Reduced demand Hybrid cars can have

higher city mileage ratings because city driving pro-vides more opportunities for the gasoline engine to be supplemented by the on-board electric motor, there-by reducing fuel demand.

The test MKZ Hybrid didn’t look noticeably dif-ferent from non-hybrid MKZ sedans. The front end is showy with a prominent chrome-colored grille, and the car won’t be confused with any other non-Lincoln sedan. I found the nearly 16-foot-long, midsize sedan to be neatly proportioned _ not too big and not too small _

so parking and driving was easy.

Inside, the display in the instrument cluster is daz-zling and colorful. The dis-plays would slide horizon-tally across the open cluster area and position themselves in a way that reminded me of the opening credits of a movie. There’s information galore there in front of the driver in the MKZ Hybrid, but it was the speedometer and the virtual plant that kept me most preoccupied.

Four-cylinder engineThough the MKZ, like

the Lexus 250h, only uses a four-cylinder engine to mate to the onboard elec-tric motor, the instant-on torque from the electric mo-tor in the MKZ gave a zestful “oomph” when I would start up and give good propulsion. And when the internal com-bustion engine joined in as speed picked up, the transi-tion was seamless in the test car. There was no roughness or hesitancy as I had expe-rienced in some other, early hybrid systems.

Combined horsepower in the MKZ Hybrid with the 2.5-liter, double overhead cam Duratec four and elec-tric motor is 191. Peak torque from the engine is 136 foot-pounds at a low 2,250 rpm, so everyday driving around

the city felt nicely energetic, and I had to keep an eye on the speedometer. The MKZ Hybrid, even with the en-gine working, was so darned quiet inside and smooth over road bumps that I could easily enjoy the ride and

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe

Entry-luxury sedan is a magical rideSometimes a car can ap-

pear to be as magical as its surroundings.

Once such vehicle is the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe I tested in Florida, to and from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park in Orlando.

Cadillac, the luxury divi-sion of General Motors was founded in 1902 by master mechanic Henry Leland, who named his automobile company after French no-bleman Antoine Laumet de la Mothe, Sieyr de Cadillac, founder of Detroit in 1703.

The company was pur-chased by GM in 1909 and by 1915 became a pioneer of modern automobile mass production as it simultane-ously instituted the concept of interchangeable precision parts while launching its status as America’s premier luxury car manufacturer.

Moving ahead nine de-cades, Cadillac introduced the CTS sports sedan in 2002, as a line replacement for the Catera. Successfully reviving the Cadillac brand, CTS has moved into the niches of sport wagon and coupe in 2011, with the CTS becoming the first Caddy to wear the coupe label since the Eldorado was put out to pasture in 2002.

Wedge-shaped designT h e exc i t i n g we d ge -

shaped luxury ride is a true head-turner. During my week of test driving it, the CTS Coupe generated ex-citement and garnered vocal praise and approving nods from Tampa to Clearwater to the Universal/Islands of Adventure parks in Orlan-do. Just outside the Wizard-ing World of Harry Potter, a guard remarked, “Magic. I haven’t seen this one before … I had heard about it, but in person, this is one hot, classy car.”

The magical “hotness” is embodied in a unitized welded steel body with di-rect-mounted front cradle. Its exterior cues begin with classic hardtop styling, utilizing no conventional B-pillar and employing a 62.3-degree windshield an-gle and a long, nearly hori-zontal backglass area.

They combine to create a dramatic profile, culmi-nating in a hand-sculpted look with a carved lower front fascia, unique brake-cooling vents, rear fascia with mesh lower grilles, signature vertical lighting highlighted with LED light pipes, rear spoiler integrat-ed into the signature center

high-mounted stop lamp and a pronounced center-line crease, to achieve a vi-sually aggressive, sporty demeanor.

Weighing in at a confident 3931 lbs, CTS stands 188.5 inches long, 55.9 inches high and 74.1 inches wide on a 113.4-inch wheelbase.

Substantial powerDemonstrating substance

as well as style, CTS deliv-ers on performance prom-ises with a sand-cast alu-minum, direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6 VVT engine with spark-ignition and a cast aluminum head. Mated to a 6-speed Hydramatic transmission, the set-up quietly gallops out 304 hp and 273 lbs-ft of torque.

On the highway, CTS ac-celerates quickly and si-lently with sports-car mo-mentum that is available in all ranges. On the track, my test Coupe delivered a zero-to-60 sprint in 6.5 seconds and aired out a quarter-mile in an effortless 15-flat; but it seemed much faster than that.

EPA rated at 18/27 on un-leaded regular, repeated treks across central Florida, from beach to theme park and back yielded an average of 23.3 mpg.

Unhesitating responseOn the interstate as well

as on the track, the CTS Coupe is a handling pro. Quick forced turns produce some understeer, and steer-ing improves from boat-like at low speed to tight at high velocity. Response is unhesitating and balance is wide and firm.

The limited slip differen-tial, independent SLA front suspension with monotube shock absorbers and 29mm hollow stabilizer bar, and independent multi-link rear with monotube shock absorbers and 25.4 mm hol-low stabilizer bar make for a very pampering ride for driver and passengers.

Michelin P235/50R 18 all-season Vs up front and P265/45Rs in the rear, cou-pled with 4-channel Stabi-liTrak with brake assist and 4-wheel disc, 4-channel ABS brakes create solid grip and stopping power.

Interior elegance and precision

Inside, my Crystal Red Premium edition was ac-cented by a Light Titanium and Ebony color scheme. The comfortable cabin with seating for four provided 36.9 inches of front head-room with 34.6 inches in row two; legroom of 42.4 inches and 35 inches and shoulder room of 56.1 inches in the first row and 40.9 in the rear seats.

The layout is one of tech-nical precision and elegant, hand-crafted details. From the center console to the center stack, the cockpit is sporty and refined.

The interior includes hand-sewn accents covering the door, center storage con-sole and instrument panel trim. Upscale amenities in-clude heated and ventilat-ed seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather seats, power adjustable front seats, integrated iPod/MP3 capa-bility, 40-gig hard drive, in-cluding the ability to store music and pause-and-re-play live radio, pop-up navi-gation system that often got “confused”, adaptive for-ward lighting system, Blue-tooth connectivity, keyless access and Smart Remote Start, rear vision camera system, Bose 5.1 Cabin Sur-round™ audio system and power/tilt sunroof.

Safety features include dual-stage driver front air bag, segment-first dual-

depth front passenger air bag, driver and front pas-senger side seat-mounted pelvic/thorax side air bags, roof-rail side curtain air bags that cover front and rear seating rows, tire pres-sure monitoring system and a body structure with strate-gically placed high-strength steel.

The 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe starts at $47,010 and my vehicle as tested stick-ered at $48,940 after up-grades for exterior paint ($995), underhood appear-ance package ($110) and des-tination charges of $825.

For under $50,000, the luxury, performance and styling of the CTS Coupe are

“magic.”———

suddenly find myself above the speed limit.

Variable transmission The only transmission is a

continuously variable trans-mission that helps optimize fuel use but doesn’t make the engine sound like its revving constantly, as some CVTs do.

When I wasn’t modulat-ing speed in the test car, I was working earnestly for best mileage, and day af-ter day, I found myself ex-pecting to top the previous day’s fuel economy.

Indeed, I never got less than 32 mpg and got up to 34.6 mpg during the test drive in driving that was 60 percent in the city and 40 percent on the highway. And weirdly, I and others in my family looked forward to seeing that virtual green plant with the white flow-ers thriving in the instru-ment cluster.

Note that the regular, gas-only MKZ has a 263-horsepower V-6 but is rat-ed at only 18/27 mpg.

Small trunkAs in other hybrids, the

trunk in the MKZ Hybrid has just 11.8 cubic feet of space compared with the 16.5 cubic feet in the trunk of a gas-only MKZ.

The reason is that much of the space aft of the back seats and under the rear

parcel shelf is needed for the battery pack that stores power for use by the elec-tric motor. Still, getting most items into and out hybrid’s trunk was not dif-ficult.

The MKZ Hybrid comes with many standard ame-nities, and some, such as the heated and cooled front seats, are extras in other cars.

There are seats for five in this hybrid, though the rear seats are most comfortable with just two people. I sat without fuss back there, thanks to 38.7 inches of headroom and 36.7 inches of legroom. Seats, front and back, provided both sup-port and a bit of cushion.

Lots of options There were more than

$6,000 worth of options on the tester; the premium THX audio system that was memorable for its crystal clear tones.

Standard safety equip-ment includes front, side and curtain air bags, anti-lock brakes and Ford’s Belt Minder system for ensur-ing safety belt use.

The pricing was note-worthy, too.

For years, hybrid versions of regular gasoline vehicles debuted with buyers hav-ing to pay a price premium because of the added tech-nology and complexity in the hybrids.

But the MKZ does not follow that pattern.
