“If my van doesn’t start, I’m in trouble,” says Leanne Kocsis, a work-ing mom whose family of six relies on having a ve-hicle. It must run reliably, accommodate her fam-ily, keep them safe and be fuel efficient. And, the loan payments can’t rob their savings.

Whether you’re a soccer mom or a jet-setter, choos-ing the right vehicle isn’t something to take lightly.

“Do your research before you buy,” advises Kocsis. As a member of financial services provider USAA, she used car-buying tools on USAA.com to find her match, a Toyota Sienna.

“The car-buying experi-ence is unique to each per-son,” says Steve Thompson, assistant vice president in charge of USAA’s Car Buy-ing Service. “We try to help people understand the cost and value of a vehicle - be-yond the sticker price - so they can get the right car for their needs.”

Savvy shoppers get the most for their money by weighing all options in ad-vance. Start your search with these factors in mind.

1. Fuel economySoaring gas prices in-

crease demand for fuel-ef-ficient vehicles. But, care-fully consider whether you drive enough to make fuel economy important. Double-check your math for hybrid vehicles. Unless you’re a road warrior, a hy-brid’s fuel savings may not offset the higher purchase price.

What about electric cars? The technology and infra-structure is still in its in-fancy, and Thompson and Jesse Toprak, vice presi-dent of industry trends for TrueCar.com, agree that buying now is risky for cost-conscious consum-ers.

2. SafetySafety should play a role

in every car-buying de-cision. You can find most crash test ratings at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website at www.iihs.org.

Most new cars come with extensive safety features such as air bags, anti-lock brakes and crumple zones. You can decide whether additional precautions are worth the extra cost.

3. ReliabilityObjective research tools

such as Consumer Reports offer predictions of reli-ability based on their own road tests, consumer sur-veys and other data. Be sure to also check used-car listings. If the vehicle you’re considering tends to sell for much less than similar models, that might indicate poor performance. For new cars, reliability re-ports are generally positive. If reliability is a concern, consider an extended war-ranty. Extended warranties come in all shapes and siz-es, so do your homework.

4. Insurance costsYour age, where you live,

and how you drive affect your insurance premiums. But your car makes a dif-ference too. You might pay more to insure a vehi-cle that has been involved in more accidents, causes more damage, costs more to repair or is stolen more frequently than other models.

“If you’re on the fence between two similar mod-els, an insurance quote might help you decide,” says Thompson.

5. FinancingDon’t wait until you’re

at the dealership to discuss financing. A lower annual percentage rate could save hundreds of dollars over the life of the loan, even if it means passing up a dealer-ship cash rebate.

“We got pre-approved for an auto loan from our bank and gave the dealer the chance to match it,” says Kocsis. “They couldn’t come close.”

Eliminate the guesswork

Choosing the right car can be time-consuming and confusing. To make it easier, some service pro-

viders do the research for you.

USAA’s “Best Value” list, for example, uses quanti-tative data to recommend one vehicle in each of 16 categories, from SUVs to compacts, as the best overall buy. The 2011 list is available at www.usaa.com/bestvalue.

Currently the No. 5-selling vehicle in America and the third-top-selling passen-ger car, Fusion was at No. 8 last year and the car keeps moving up the charts. Last year, Fusion received an ex-tensive tweaking, so this year, it gets standard incor-porated blind-spot mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and the MyKey system, while the Sport trim gets one-touch up/down front win-dows, HD radio, additional power adjustments for the front seats and a standard manual-shift feature for the six-speed automatic trans-mission.

Built at the Ford Her-mosillo (Mexico) Stamp-ing and Assembly Plant, the 2011 model also presents more safety, technology and convenience amenities in-cluding Ford SYNC® com-munications and infotain-ment system coupled with the available touch-screen voice-activated navigation system.

Sport-oriented mid-sizeRemaining in its second

generation, the Euro-look-ing 2011 Fusion Sport has the perfect trim name as it IS a sport-oriented mid-size. With an active, upscale de-meanor and aerodynamics that help reduce wind noise and improve fuel economy, Fusion’s aggressive grille and athletic-appearing domed hood promote a fun-to-drive attitude.

Adhering to mid-size stature, Fusion comes in at 190.6 inches in length, 56.9 inches in height and 72.2 inches in width on a 107.4-inch wheelbase, with a curb weight of 3591 lbs.

was decked out with in-tegrated spotter mirrors, body-color exterior mirrors, door handles and front and rear bumpers, dark chrome grille, roof-mounted an-tenna, quad-beam halo-gen headlamps, fog lamps, parking lamps built-into the headlamps and fascia, tail-lamps with mesh design, chrome-accented trim, side rocker moldings, dual chrome-tipped exhaust, so-lar-tinted glass and decklid spoiler and 18-inch 5-spoke painted aluminum wheels covered in P225/45VR18 all-season tires.

Power choicesOne item that differenti-

ates the Sport version from other Fusion trims is its power plant. Fusion muscle on other trims begins with a 2.5-liter I-4 engine produc-ing 175hp and 172 lbs-ft of torque and EPA-estimated at 34mpg highway. Also of-fered are a Duratec 30 3.0-liter V-6 engine producing 240 horsepower and 222 lbs-ft of torque, along with flex-fuel capability, and a hybrid set-up combining a 2.5-liter Atkinson I-4 en-gine and a permanent mag-net electric motor that is good for a net total of 191hp and an EPA rating of 41mpg city and 36mpg highway.

The Sport trim is equipped for maximum performance, with a 3.5-liter Duractec V-6 engine mated to a 6-speed SelectShift automatic trans-mission. The combination gallops out 263 horsepower and 249 lbs-ft of torque on

regular unleaded fuel and is EPA rated at 18mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway. A week of mixed-use driving in the test ve-hicle yielded an average of 21.1mpg.

Showing surprising zip from a dead stop, my test Fusion Sport sprinted from zero to 60mph in a spirited, torquesteering 6.9 seconds on its way to a valiant 15.5-second quarter-mile on a slightly wet track.

On the highway and on various winding and bumpy roads and courses, my all-wheel-drive Fusion Sport showed some devout over-steer, responsive correction, straight body aim, surface-smoothing suspension and confidence-inspiring grip while humming out a pur-poseful engine hum and dis-tinguished exhaust reply.

Contemporary cabinFusion Sport’s interior

was designed with a con-temporary appeal that com-bines sportiness, tech and function, utilizing metallic finishes on the instrument panel that carry through on the jewel-like gauge cluster, the center console, doors and steering wheel. The in-strument panel is finished with a soft upper and lower skin, and instrument panel displays and switches glow with a contemporary ice blue lighting.

Fusion is also built for comfort inside with seating for five. The cabin provides 38.7 inches of front head-room with 37.8 inches in row two, legroom of 42.3 and 7.1 and shoulder room of 57.4 and 56.5.

Interior amenities in-clude Sport Blue Premium Leather-trimmed seats with contrast stitching, leather shift knob, 10-way power driver’s seat and 4-

way power passenger seat, power driver lumbar, man-ual climate control, cabin air filter, 6-speaker AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 capa-bility, SIRIUS Satellite Ra-dio, welcome chime, floor mats, top-o-dash storage bin, front center console, power door locks, intermit-tent speed-sensitive wipers, power windows, tilt/tele-scopic steering wheel, mes-sage center with trip com-puter and a steering wheel with cruise and redundant audio controls.

Safety is well-addressed with dual front air bags, front seat side airbags, first and second row side air cur-tains, personal safety sys-tem, tire pressure monitor-ing system, AdvanceTrac with Electronic Stability Control, LATCH, child safe-ty looks on the rear doors, SOS post-crash alert, pe-rimeter alarm and Securi-Lock passive anti-theft sys-tem, and a compact spare wheel and tire.

The basic Fusion S trim starts at $19,820; the up-graded SEL stickers at

$25,045 and my test Focus Sport started at $26,895 for the FWD, while the AWD begins at $28,745. The Moon and Tune 401A Sport pack-age for $995 included a Sony Sound System, 5.1 Sur-round Sound, 12 high-qual-ity speakers, two subwoof-ers, 6-disc CD changer and power moonroof. The Re-verse Sensing System added $295, remote start increased the total by $345 and des-tination charges of $760 made for a final sticker price

Drivers are holding on to their cars longer in these tough economic times, so AutoZone, the nation’s leading auto parts retailer, is offering tips to help mo-torists get the most out of their investment.

New car?“Holding off on purchas-

ing a new vehicle can be a smart financial decision, especially if drivers properly maintain their vehicles to ensure they’re running safe-ly and efficiently,” said Steve Stoll, Merchandising Direc-tor of AutoZone. “Maintain-ing and replacing key com-ponents, such as brakes and batteries, can keep vehicles on the road and help prevent costly repairs in the future.”

Ongoing maintenanceThe average length of time

consumers hold on to their vehicles is more than five years, according to a recent automotive industry study. Older cars can be safe and dependable, but need on-going maintenance to keep them running at their best. According to the National Car Council, 80 percent of vehicles on the road are in need of service or parts.

Plan aheadMotorists who know the

signs of impending failure and understand the impact extreme weather conditions can have on various car components, can plan ahead for repairs and replacements instead of being hit by an unexpected bill down the road, Stoll said.

“The longer car mainte-nance is delayed, the more costly it can be,” said Stoll.

Two key components in

any vehicle are the brak-ing system and the battery. AutoZone experts offer the following tips to ensure these vital parts are properly maintained.

check-up.Excessive build-up of road

salt and brine solutions in the winter on brake compo-nents is one cause of brake failure. These solutions can create contamination of ex-posed brake parts and can cause brake components to deteriorate prematurely. Hazardous road conditions can also lead to increased use of Antilock Braking Sys-tems (ABS), which can cause premature wear of all brake system components.

As temperatures warm up, motorists should check their braking systems to uncover any damage that may have occurred during the winter months.

Check brakes quarterly to ensure proper performance.

In general, brakes are the most important safety fea-ture on any vehicle and should be checked quarter-ly to ensure proper perfor-mance. Brake pads and ro-tors should also be checked any time the tires are re-moved, such as during a tire rotation. Other brake com-

ponents such as brake fluid should be checked at every oil change.

BatteryExtreme temperatures can

mean battery failure.A battery’s biggest enemy

is heat. High temperatures can cause the grids inside batteries to corrode and break down. The effects of the corrosion are usually seen when winter hits, when the car requires more elec-trical power to start. Drivers should have batteries tested up to twice a year in nor-mal climates, and more fre-quently in extremely hot or cold climates.

Retailers such as AutoZone offer free battery testing.

Replace the battery every three to four years.

While batteries can last more than five years in ideal driving conditions, factors such as temperature, the car’s age and nature of usage can impact the life of a bat-tery. Many motorists are un-aware that under the stress of normal city driving, the average life of a vehicle bat-tery is about three years.

According to the Nation-al Car Care Council, driv-ers with batteries more than three years old should consider replacing them, since batteries rarely give warning signs that they are
