2010 Toyota Camry SE
Camry is crown jewel of Toyota fleetOnce again, Toyota Cam-
ry is the top-selling passen-ger car in America and third best-selling vehicle behind only the Ford F Series and Chevrolet Silverado trucks.
This marks the eighth c o n s e c u t i ve ye a r a n d twelfth of the last thirteen, that Camry has occupied the top spot in America.
Continuing in its seventh generation, the mid-size sedan began as a compact car within the Celica line in 1980, and fully replaced the Corona in 1983.
Deriving its name from the Japanese term: Kan-Muri, meaning “crown”, Camry is built at the Tsutsumi Plant in Toyota City, Japan, TMMK in Georgetown, Kentucky, and the SIA (Subaru of In-diana Automotive) plant in Lafayette, Indiana.
Styling, power and safety enhancementsFor 2010, the Camry sedan
gets some exterior styling enhancements with a new front fascia that features a new blacked-out grille, re-designed front bumper, larger projection headlamps, tweaked taillights and fog lights, and an enlarged lower front air intake.
The outside revisions are accentuated by new alloy wheels for XLE and SE trims and new wheel covers for LE.
Under the hood, the model I tested was equipped with the same 3.5-liter 6-cylin-der aluminum alloy block engine with aluminum alloy head that was employed last year, but a new 4-cylinder powertrain is also available.
In the cabin, the 2010 model receives a power win-dow boost with jam protec-tion, USB port for auxilia-ry music source, Bluetooth on LE and SE models, and Smart Key on upgraded members of the line.
A safety and control ad-
vancement is the installa-tion of All Vehicle Stability Control with traction con-trol as standard.
Elegant linesLooking clean and elegant
with its fluid lines, aerody-namic multi-reflector halo-gen headlamps with black-out sport trim, integrated front fog lamps, 17-inch-6-spoke alloy wheels, chrome-tipped exhaust, color-keyed front and rear underbody spoilers and side rocker panel moldings, my Barce-lona Red Camry measured 189.2 inches long, 57.9 inch-es high and 71.7 inches wide on a 109.3-inch wheelbase with ground clearance of 5.3 inches, while weighing in at a curb weight of 3483 lbs.
Camry power on my test ride came from a 3.5-liter V-6 with Toyota Direct Igni-tion and an EFI fuel system. The set-up produced 268hp and 248 lbs-ft of torque and is EPA estimated at 19mpg in the city and 28mpg on the highway, with an 18.5-gal-lon tank.
My week of mixed-use testing yielded an aver-age of 22.7mpg, but for the “green” conscious, Camry offers a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder option that puts out 169hp and 171 lbs-ft of torque and is rated at 22/33/26; and a Hybrid version of Camry is also available, with a com-bined 187 horsepower out-put that varies power be-tween the gas engine and electric motor, or combines both as needed.
Familiar powerIn terms of response, this
year’s muscle propelled the test Camry from zero to 60mph in 7.2 seconds and worked a quarter-mile in 15.6 seconds, which was just about the same as my tests were on the 2009 ver-sion (7.2 and 15.5) — even identical cars often test dif-ferently and run differently in tests, and these two cars, a year apart, were nearly identical in performance.
On the road, the inde-pendent MacPherson strut front suspension and in-dependent dual-link rear absorbed most of what ir-regular surfaces threw at us, though severe potholes were met with jarring thumps.
Quick turns produced some understeer from the power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, and some wobble from the rear of the chassis, but the driving ex-perience was always one of confidence.
The anti-lock brake sys-tem utilizing ventilated discs up front and solid discs in the rear provides solid stop-ping power, and while there was more road noise than expected, the overall interior disposition was one of grace and sophistication.
Distinguished cabinInterior dimensions accom-
modate a seating capacity of five to the tune of 38.8 inches of headroom in front and 37.8 in the second row, legroom of 41.7 and 38.3 and shoulder room of 57.8 and 56.9.
Inside, the SE is dis-tinguished by a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, large, easy to read il-luminated blue gauge light-ing, and aluminum pedals and sill plates.
The cabin arrangement also includes an intuitive two-level dash and console and steering wheel controls for the audio system.
Camry’s safety strategy is engaged inside and out, starting with its body struc-ture, which is designed to absorb collision-impact forces and help minimize impact deformation to the passenger cabin.
High-strength steel is used for B-pillar and rocker panel reinforcements to help man-age overall body buckling in the event of certain side col-lisions. Inside the cabin, the seat frames also are designed to help absorb side collision loads. Dual-stage advanced SRS front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag are standard on all Camry models.
The Camry SE starts at $26,165, and my test vehi-cle added a Sport Leather Package for $3,180; paint protection ($395); body side molding ($209), rear bum-per appliqué ($69); leather shift knob ($72); first aid kit ($29); dual headrest rear seat entertainment system with
7-inch monitors ($1799); re-mote engine starter ($529) and delivery processing and handling fee ($760) for a sticker price of $33,207. The 2010 Toyota Camry is best-selling royalty once again.

Behind the Wheel
Mazda’s new small car is fun to driveBy ANN M. JOBFOr ThE ASSOciATEd PrESS
The bright, neon-green exterior ensured no one missed my 2011 Mazda2 test car. But it was the hatch-back’s maneuverable small size and fuel economy that really caught everyone’s at-tention.
New for 2011, the dimin-utive Mazda2 is the first smaller, so-called B-seg-ment car that Mazda Motor Corp. of Japan has brought to the United States in some seven years.
Less than 13 feet long and lighter than many small hatchback competitors, the Mazda2 is a nimble, five-door handler whose 100 horsepower engine provides a surprisingly sprightly ride, particularly with the five-speed manual transmission.
Even better, the Mazda2 outperforms most other small hatchbacks, such as the Honda Fit, Nissan Ver-sa and Scion xD, in gasoline mileage.
The top U.S government fuel economy rating for the Mazda2 is 29 miles per gal-lon in city driving and 35 mpg on the highway with manual transmission.
Gas mileageThis makes the Mazda2
the fourth-best non-hy-brid small car in the United States in gas mileage, ac-cording to the government. Only hybrids, diesel-pow-ered Volkswagens and the Ford Fiesta, Mini Cooper and Toyota Yaris have re-ceived higher fuel mileage ratings.
Best of all, the Mazda2 is Mazda’s price leader. Start-ing manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, includ-ing destination charge, of $14,730 for a 2011 Mazda2 is $5,705 less than the starting retail price of Mazda’s pre-vious entry car, the Mazda3.
With automatic transmis-
sion the 2011 Mazda starts at $15,530, and the uplevel Mazda Touring version with upgraded interior, fog lights and rear spoiler starts at $16,185.
By comparison, the Hon-da Fit five-door hatch-back with 118-horsepower, four-cylinder engine start-ed at $15,650 for the 2010 model year, and the Scion xD hatchback started at $15,620. Pricing for 2011s hasn’t yet been announced.
The 2011 Nissan Versa hatchback has a starting re-tail price of $14,270.
‘Cute’ little carWhile reluctant to char-
acterize the Mazda2 as cute, I admit that opening the home garage each day and seeing how little space the car took up made me smile. There’s nothing in-timidating about this little car, outside or inside, where the gauges and controls are fairly simple to use and un-derstand.
I appreciated that the Mazda2 retains the circular air vents on the dashboard that are in other Mazdas. They can be cranked around to about any direction and angle and make adjust-ing air flow around your face and body easier than in many other cars.
But, because passengers in the Mazda2 sit at car height on the road, I didn’t like having my views blocked by every pickup truck, sport utility vehicle and van in front of me. Also, a few times, when drivers cut me off in traffic, I wondered whether the Mazda2 was so
small that they didn’t see me coming.
Still, the ride and driving was impressive for such a small, low-cost car.
The 1.5-liter, double over-head cam four cylinder has variable valve timing and worked well with the man-ual transmission to give the car a frisky personality. Peak torque rating is 98 foot-pounds at 4,000 rpm.
The 100 horses and 98 foot-pound of torque don’t sound like much until the Mazda2’s light weight is factored in. Weighing barely 2,300 pounds with manu-al transmission, this little hatchback is lighter than the Fit, Mini and Versa.
As for safety, the Mazda2 comes standard with the usual safety equipment, such as front, side and cur-tain air bags, antilock brakes and stability control. Even traction control is standard.
The test Mazda2 bound-ed up hills, was a zippy city traveler and did well on highways, all without the engine sounding overly stressed.
The interior isn’t exactly quiet, but it’s not noisy, ei-ther.
The gearshift lever, lo-cated at the lower part of the center of the dashboard, rather than in the center console, had a notchy feel, but I never missed a shift.
A four-speed automatic also is available, but it adds $800 to the price and re-duces the city and highway mileage rating by 2 mpg.
Overall, in a test drive with about 60 percent city driving, the test car aver-
aged just over 32 mpg with-out any effort to maximize mileage.
Passengers felt some vi-brations. But it wasn’t a harsh ride.
Small wheelbaseEven with a relatively
small wheelbase— the dis-tance from one wheel on one side of the car to the other wheel on the same side of the car —the Maz-da2 didn’t bob up and down too badly over highway ex-pansion cracks.
Generally, body motions in this front-wheel drive car felt damped and nicely controlled.
Rear-seat legroom is an abbreviated 33 inches but headroom is commendable at 37 inches.
Cargo room measures 13.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats. But folding down the 60/40-split rear seatbacks is easy and expands the space to nearly 28 cubic feet.
There are few factory-in-stalled options for the Maz-
da2. For example, there’s no navigation system or leather seats, but leather-wrapped steering wheel and fine-looking upgraded fab-ric seats are standard in the uplevel Touring model.
Even the bright green paint _ it’s called Spirited Green Metallic _ that was on the test car doesn’t cost ex-tra. And, in contrast to some competitors, carpeted floor mats are standard, even on
the base Mazda2.It’s just too bad that buyers
must move up to a Touring model to get the gauge that shows average miles per gal-lon, miles to empty, etc.
And note the door lock and unlock buttons are in the center console, not on the doors. The console also does not provide cov-ered storage space, just cup holders and separate cub-bies.

Generation Gap
Five ways car culture has changedBy BETH J. HARPAZASSOciAted PreSS Writer
NEW YORK — Not long ago, I gave a ride to a kid in an old car with no air condi-tioning. It was a warm day, so I told him to roll down the window.
He had no idea what that meant. Having grown up with power windows, he’d never seen a crank handle and didn’t know how to use one. (He’d probably nev-er been in a car without air conditioning, either.)
It got me thinking about all the things today’s kids take for granted when it comes to cars that either didn’t ex-ist or were far less common when their parents were growing up. Here are five ways in which kids experi-ence cars differently, start-ing with those windows.
Windows and doorsYou can still find crank
handles on old cars and “very, very low-end cars,” according to Art Jacobsen, automotive industry veteran and director of business de-velopment for CarMD.com, a company that offers hand-held products and services to diagnose car problems.
The cheapest, most basic models of the Nissan Versa and Smart Fortwo cars, for example, lack power win-dows.
But on most vehicles, power windows are a stan-dard feature. “Manufactur-ers found it was cheaper in the long run to eliminate the hand-crank window option and make all their cars with electric windows,” said Jeff Bennett, an associate pro-fessor at Northwood Uni-versity in Midland, Mich., who’s written textbooks for the automotive industry and also worked for years as a Chevy and Toyota dealer.
Another thing that’s in-creasingly rare: manual locks. Locking each door separately seems like a lot of work compared to one click from the key chain.
Music and gamesChange the station! Turn it
down! Turn it up! I hate that song!
These conflicts haven’t completely disappeared from car rides, but there are more entertainment options
than ever before.“Most cars now have an
audio jack where you can plug in an iPod or any oth-er MP3 and play it over the car stereo,” said Jacobsen. And if the passengers don’t like the driver’s taste in mu-sic, chances are they have their own iPods with head phones.
For kids, DVD players and video games have replaced 20 Questions, GHOST, li-cense-plate math and Ge-ography. “Kids don’t want to play ‘I’m Thinking Of...’ or ‘I Spy’ anymore,” said Kar-en Brocoff, a member of the Car Care Council Women’s Board and mother of two. “They just watch movies and play with their electronics.”
Other entertainment op-tions include satellite radio and even satellite TV. Ben-nett says it all adds up to a huge shift in the way fami-lies travel.
“It’s not so much that your car has no more crank-down windows that’s the big dif-ference,” he said. “It’s that Charlie and Millie are in the back seat watching some-thing and not talking to mom and dad — ever.”
Getting lostHow often did your par-
ents get lost, and then get in an argument with each oth-er about being lost? That’s probably something your kids experience far less of-ten than you did growing up, thanks to GPS technology. Some folks get turn-by-turn directions and traffic up-dates from their cell phones, some have portable GPS de-vices, and some spring for a navigational system built right into the dashboard of their vehicle, though that’s still a luxury option.
But Jacobsen notes that navigational technology hasn’t entirely eliminated the experience of getting lost.
“A lot of times my GPS has taken me around in circles, so you still get to have the heated discussions with your spouse,” he said.
And when your car breaks down, you still have to wait for the tow truck or AAA to show up. But thanks to cell phones, at least you don’t have to find a pay phone.
Car seatsRe m e m b e r b o u n c i n g
around the back seat when you were a kid or sitting on a grownup’s lap? Maybe you rode shotgun in front while mom or dad drove, or even got to bop around the bed of a pickup truck.
All that’s forbidden now, thanks to rules and recom-mendations on child safety.
All 50 states require the use of car seats for children, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also recommends that children under 13 always sit in back. Not only can front-seat air bags injure small passengers, but back-seat passengers are less likely to be hurt in head-on collisions.
Once kids have outgrown car seats at age 4 or 40 pounds, the NHTSA says they should use booster seats until they are 8 years old or 57 inches tall, which-ever comes first.
That means some kids will be big enough to ride the tallest roller coaster in the world, Six Flags’ Kingda Ka in Jackson, N.J., which has a height requirement of 54
inches, before they can ride in a car without a booster seat.
The rules have had a dra-matic impact on safety.
Although car accidents remain the leading cause of death for kids ages 3 to 14, the number of auto-related fatalities among children under 13 has dropped from 3,643 in 1975, to 1,045 in 2008, according to statistics
from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Under the hoodGenerations of 20th cen-
tury kids grew up working on the family car with their dads. No more, says Jacob-sen.
“It’s not by accident that manufacturers have de-signed these computer sys-tems,” he said. “You have to
bring the car to them to get even simple things done. Everything is computerized and it’s very difficult with-out access to the proper tools and information.”
On the other hand, says Bennett, “cars are so much more reliable, so much safer, and so much less mainte-nance is required. The aver-age individual is much better off today.”

U.S. buyers continue trend toward smaller enginesBy ToM KRisHERAP AutO Writer
DETROIT — When it came time for Ray Hancart to choose the engine he wanted in a new Honda Accord, he decided there was no need for the bigger V-6. He picked one with four cylinders.
The Columbus, Ohio, mar-keting and public relations executive joined a growing trend in U.S. auto sales to-ward smaller powerplants, choosing Honda’s 2.4-liter four.
The trend toward four-cylinder engines is growing so fast that some midsize models, where people have a choice between the two, have seen a 50 percentage point increase in the past six years. Overall, the number of four-cylinder engines sold since 2005 has jumped dra-matically, from 28 percent of all cars in 2005 to 43 percent so far this year, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank.
The trend is starting to erase what once was con-ventional wisdom: that a four is too small to power a midsize car, especially when it’s carrying a family. Fours, boosted by turbochargers, are even starting to show up in larger vehicles like the new Ford Explorer sport utility.
No need to upgrade“For what I do on a nor-
mal basis, the Accord four-cylinder has got more than enough get up and go for me,” said Hancart, 30, who bought his car in July. “I just didn’t see the need, to be honest, to do the upgrade to the six.”
Auto executives and ana-lysts expect the growth in
smaller engines to continue as the industry scrambles to meet government rules that raise the average new-car gas mileage to 35.5 mpg by 2016, nearly 10 mpg more than now.
Even as recently as 2005, buying a midsize car with a four-cylinder engine was making a compromise. The fours didn’t have near the power of a V-6, and they were noisy. Anyone who bought one got fuel econo-my but traded it for a quieter ride and perhaps the ability to tow a small trailer.
But as gas prices started to rise toward $3 per gallon and with stricter government requirements looming, au-tomakers moved to improve their fours. They refined the smaller engines and added insulation to make them quieter. They changed the fuel injection systems to boost horsepower. As a re-sult, newer four-cylinder engines have as much pow-er as older V-6 engines.
A version of Hyundai’s 2.4-liter, four-cylinder So-nata has 200 horsepower, as much or more than six-
cylinder engines from just a few years ago.
“They don’t whine. You don’t feel like you’re in an eggbeater,” Jeff Schuster, executive director of global forecasting for J.D. Power and Associates, said of the newer fours.
Gas mileageWith gasoline now around
$2.50 per gallon, dealers say gas mileage isn’t as big a factor in the choice as it used to be. The fours sim-ply have closed most of the performance gap, plus they cost less than a V-6.
Bob McInerney, who runs a Toyota dealership in Clin-ton Township, Mich., north of Detroit, said he tells his customers to drive Cam-rys with both size engines. Then he tells them the four costs substantially less than the six, often thousands less depending on how the cars are equipped.
“When you drive them both, you can hardly tell the difference,” he said. “It’s ba-sically a no-brainer.”
Fours have always been
p o p u l a r i n t h e C a m ry, America’s top-selling car. They’ve risen from 78 per-cent of its sales six years ago to 86 percent so far this year. For Honda’s Accord, the rate of four-cylinder en-gines has largely held steady at 75 percent, but it has risen dramatically for Chevrolet’s Malibu. In 2005, only 36 percent of Malibus sold had four-cylinder engines, but it’s up to 88 percent through June of this year.
Hyundai Motor Co. de-cided it wouldn’t even offer a six in new versions of the Sonata sedan, saving about 50 pounds of steel structure that was needed to sup-port the six. Because of the weight loss and a new en-gine, Sonata moved to the top of the class for gas mile-age at 35 mpg on the high-
way.Within the company,
some feared that Hyundai would give up l0 percent to 15 percent of Sonata’s sales by deleting the six. Instead, the automaker can’t build enough Sonatas, and it is shifting its factory lineup so it can make more of them at a plant in Montgomery, Ala.
Eliminating options“It has worked out so
well, much better than we thought,” said John Kraf-cik, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, adding that he expects other automakers to join Hyundai in eliminating sixes in mid-size cars.
General Motors is consid-ering a move to offer only four-cylinder engines in its
midsize cars.At Hugh White Honda in
Columbus, where Hancart bought his car, only 15 per-cent of the Accords now go out the door with V-6 en-gines, and those go mainly to older people who down-sized from V-8 engines years ago, said General Manager Don Smith.
“If they’ve got a mindset, they’re pretty well set on a six,” he said.
Younger buyers, however, almost always go for four cylinders because the cars cost less and get better gas mileage, he said.
A four-cylinder Accord with an automatic trans-mission gets 34 mpg on the highway, while its six-cyl-inder counterpart gets 30. Over the years, the savings can be significant.
“For what i do on a normal basis, the Accord four-
cylinder has got more than enough get up and go for me. i just didn’t see the
need, to be honest, to do the upgrade to the six.”
