It’s no secret that regular main-tenance helps prolong the life and performance of your vehicle, but you may be surprised by how many routine maintenance tasks you can complete by yourself at home.

1. Air FiltersNot only do you want fresh air while

you drive, so does your engine. If your air filter gets too dirty or clogged, your engine can't suck enough air into the combustion chambers. Engine perfor-mance will be reduced, especially when passing or merging onto a freeway.

Changing an air filter requires no more skill than hanging pictures around the house

Changing your air filter every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, provides better engine protection, but give careful attention to seasonal concerns such as fall leaves and other debris that can clog air filters. 2. Oil

Oil is one of the most vital compo-nents of your engine’s overall health. It allows engine parts to operate smoothly together, removes heat and prevents accumulation of things like carbon and varnish in the engine.

Your owner’s manual will guide you to the right oil, but you may need to comparison shop for the right perfor-mance blend for your driving needs.

Today, many auto manufacturers tout intervals of 5,000 miles and longer. However, those intervals are based on using the correct oil and a quality oil filter.

A qualified repair technician can help

you determine the best schedule for your vehicle and driving habits.

3. Transmission FluidTransmission fluid is another liquid

vital to proper engine operation. Gear shifting, cooling the transmission and lubrication are roles transmission fluid plays. The fluid deteriorates over time, particularly with harsh driving condi-tions. Your owner’s manual will tell you the change interval and the specifica-tions for transmission fluid. Transmis-sion fluid is highly specialized now and requires a fluid that meets the original equipment manufacturer specs.

4. Cabin Air FilterA cabin air filter cleans and circulates

air that enters through a car’s ventila-tion system. Contaminants can enter with outside air and become concen-trated, exposing passengers to higher levels of dust, dirt and allergens while potentially limiting the effectiveness of your car’s air conditioner and defrost system, making it important to keep the cabin filter unrestricted. In general, a cabin air filter should be changed ev-ery 15,000 miles or once a year, but can vary depending on driving habits. 5. Spark Plugs

Though many spark plugs last as long as 100,000 miles, certain condi-tions can damage plugs, resulting in engine misfires, poor fuel economy and other malfunctions that affect engine

per-formance. These issues indicate that at least checking, if not replacing, spark plugs is in order. Used car buyers should check the condition of spark plugs if no service history is available.

Replacing spark plugs is a quick job requiring few tools, but it’s key to change one at a time so you do not mix up the plug wires. Take note of the condition of the plugs removed: they should be slightly dirty. A white or oily appearance may indicate other problems.

Choosing the right plugs for a vehicle is as simple as talking with the staff at your local auto parts store; they’ll be able to point you to the right plugs for your vehicle. Always replace spark plug wires or boots that are worn, cracked or oil-soaked and reference your owner’s manual for information.

For many, the words “yacht club” are synony-mous with wealth. They bring to mind images of old men in blue blazers, smoky canons and, of course, boats — expensive ones.

Summed up, they’re for rich people.

When it comes to yacht clubs on Whidbey, however, you can take those stereo-types and toss them like old bilge water.

Oak Harbor and South Whidbey club leaders describe their organiza-tions as modern and social, places where people of all means gather to share a mutual love of the water.

These aren’t the tradi-tional clubs of the East Coast or urban harbors.

“We are not stuffy,” said Avis Berney, of the Oak Harbor Yacht Club.

“We’re the exact opposite of that,” echoed Bill Brown, regatta chairman and an

instructor in the club’s youth sailing program.

In fact, you don’t even have to own a boat. Oak Harbor members recently got back from their season-opening shakedown cruise to LaConner. There, sev-eral members arrived on wheels rather than afloat. Known as “land sharks” they rolled into town in RVs and campers.

“It’s not uncommon for yacht clubs, especially in the winter time, to do some

land cruises,” Avis said.Like Oak Harbor, boat

ownership isn’t a prerequi-site for membership at the South Whidbey Yacht Club. Most members do have some type of water craft — they range from sail-ing dinghies and kayaks to the quintessential seagoing yacht and power boats — but others are there only for the camaraderie.

South Whidbey and Oak Harbor are the island’s only yacht clubs.

Oak Harbor has roots dating back three decades, beginning as the Decep-tion Pass Boat Club, Ber-ney said. The organization leased land from the city in the 1980s and built the clubhouse at the entrance to the Oak Harbor Marina, at the corner of Maui Ave-nue and Catalina Drive.

The two-story structure has a ballroom and com-mercial kitchen upstairs — it’s available for rent — and a bar and members clubhouse below. Member-ship certificates number around 190, but each can include a couple or entire families so about 325 indi-viduals are currently club “members,” Berney said.

Conversely, South Whid-bey is younger and smaller than its Oak Harbor coun-terpart. It was started by a group of friends.

“They got together one night, had a few drinks and said ‘Let’s start a yacht club,’” said Jill Brown, a board member, and mem-bership chairwoman.

Similar to Oak Harbor, South Whidbey has 70 “memberships” which com-prise about 130 members total, but it lacks property. The club’s biggest expense is insurance for its learn to sail programs, Bill Brown said.

Thus, membership fees for the two clubs differ significantly: Oak Harbor is $400 per year with a one-time $50 sign-up cost, and South Whidbey is $100 with a $100 one-time sign-up fee.

Oak Harbor, however, did a comparison and found its prices are lower than most clubs in Western Washington.

For example, the initia-tion fee of the Seattle Yacht Club can cost as much as $11,000, according to the organization’s web page.

At Oak Harbor, members enjoy “recipro-cal” benefits such as discounts on moorage and fuel. It’s a practice common among clubs around the country.

Both clubs also offer a wide array of activities and educational opportunities.

Oak Harbor runs seasonal races, from the spring series and Thursday-night round-the-can races to the famous Round Whidbey Race, an event many sailors say they love to hate — weather can make it both fun and grueling.

Oak Harbor also partners with educa-tional organizations, such as Oak Harbor Youth Sailing and Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron, while offering cruising opportunities for the adventuresome.

South Whidbey hosts races as well, such as the summertime Sail-What-You-Gotta-Regatta, which is geared toward those with small boats they don’t often use. Held on Lone Lake, this is the third year running.

“We try to do as much with the commu-

nity as we can and this is a way of saying, ‘Come on down and have a good time.’” Jill Brown said.

New in 2016 is a small-boat racing regatta in June. It’s limited to dinghies such as El Toros, Pelicans and Lasers.

“We’re calling it Whidbey Cup,” Bill Brown said.

The club also offers sailing classes for youth and adults, though make sure to sign up early as space fills up quickly.

Last year the club had a waiting list. Sign up is through the South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District.

The club isn’t limited to freshwater lakes; two overnight cruises are planned for this year, one in July Pleasant Harbor in Hood Canal and another in August, location to-be-announced. Participation is open to power boats and sailboats alike.

The South Whidbey Yacht Club meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at Deer Lagoon Grange; visit www.swyachtclub.org/ for more details.

The Oak Harbor Yacht Club is open Wednesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to “closing” — no later than 10 p.m. — and the club offers several regular get-togeth-ers and occasions. Visit www.ohyc.org for a list of all its function.

The car show is open to all makes, models and years of cars, trucks and motorcycles. Entries must be in place by 11 a.m. on show day. Trophies will be awarded at approximately 4 p.m.
