As a 25-year-oldU.S. Air Mail pi, Lindberghemerged suddenly from virtualobscurity to instantaneous world

fame as the result of his OrteigPrize-winning solo non-stop flighton May 20–21, 1927, made fromRoosevelt Field in Garden Cityon New York's Long Island to LeBourget Field in Paris, France, adistance of nearly 3,600 statutemiles (5,800 km), in the single-seat, single-engine purpose-builtRyan monoplane Spirit of St.Louis. As a result of this flight,Lindbergh was the first person inhistory to be in New York oneday and Paris the next.Lindbergh, a U.S. Army Air CorpsReserve officer, was alsoawarded the nation's highestmilitary decoration, the Medal ofHonor, for his historic exploit. Inthe late 1920s and early 1930s,Lindbergh used his fame topromote the development of bothcommercial aviation and Air Mailservices in the United States andthe Americas. In March 1932, hisinfant son, Charles, Jr., waskidnapped and murdered in whatwas soon dubbed the "Crime ofthe Century". It was described byjournalist H.L. Mencken, as ". .the biggest story since theresurrection." The kidnappingeventually led to the Lindberghfamily's being "driven intovoluntary exile" in Europe, towhich they sailed in secrecy fromNew York under assumed namesin late December 1935 to "seek asafe, secluded residence awayfrom the tremendous publichysteria" in America. TheLindbergh’s returned to theUnited States in April 1939.Before the United States formallyentered World War II, Lindberghhad been an outspoken advocateof keeping the U.S. out of theworld conflict, as had his father,Congressman Charles AugustLindbergh, during World War I.Although Lindbergh was a leaderin the anti-war America Firstmovement, he neverthelessstrongly supported the war effortafter Pearl Harbour and flew 50combat missions in the PacificTheatre of World War II as acivilian consultant even thoughPresident Franklin D. Roosevelthad refused to reinstate his ArmyAir Corps colonel's commissionthat he had resigned in April1941. The Wrightbrothers, Orville (August 19,1871 – January 30, 1948) andWilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30,1912), were two Americanbrothers, inventors, and aviationpioneers who are credited[ withinventing and building the world'sfirst successful airplane andmaking the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, onDecember 17, 1903. From 1905to 1907, the brothers developedtheir flying machine into the firstpractical fixed-wing aircraft.Although not the first to build andfly experimental aircraft, theWright brothers were the first toinvent aircraft controls that madefixed-wing powered flightpossible. The brothers'fundamental breakthrough wastheir invention of three-axiscontrol, which enabled the pi tosteer the aircraft effectively andto maintain its equilibrium. Thismethod became and remainsstandard on fixed-wing aircraft ofall kinds. From the beginning oftheir aeronautical work, theWright brothers focused ondeveloping a reliable method ofpi control as the key to solving"the flying problem". Thisapproach differed significantlyfrom other experimenters of thetime who put more emphasis ondeveloping powerful engines.Using a small homebuilt windtunnel, the Wrights also collectedmore accurate data than anybefore, enabling them to designand build wings and propellersthat were more efficient than anybefore. Their first U.S. patent,821,393, did not claim inventionof a flying machine, but rather, the invention of a system ofaerodynamic control thatmanipulated a flying machine'ssurfaces. They gained themechanical skills essential fortheir success by working foryears in their shop with printingpresses, bicycles, motors, andother machinery. Their work withbicycles in particular influencedtheir belief that an unstablevehicle like a flying machinecould be controlled and balanced

Lot: 49Men of the Battle of Britain hardbacked book signed by 250 BOBpis and aces. 80 are signed onthe book pages and 170 onlabels affixed throughout thebook. Incredible collection of the

brave pis who save Britain fromInvasion in 1941.Also inscribedby the author Ken Wynn. This iswhy the book is a unique one-off.The book was specificallypublished in 1990 to coincidewith the historic 50th Anniversaryof the Battle of Britain. 'OperationHomecoming' brought many of'The Few' living abroad back toBritain for the Anniversary and forvarious receptions – Maidstone -Bentley Priory - Biggin Hill -Buckingham Palace. It was a one-off LAST TIME 'The Few' wouldbe gathered in such numbers.Collected by Playwright,Screenwriter & Film ProducerAnthony Attard, who has detailedhow this amazing item came topass. In 1990, former WWIITyphoon pi and aviation authorJohn Golley, introduced me tothe Redgrave Theatre, Farnham,Surrey, who wanted a new playwritten to commemorate the 50thAnniversary of The Battle ofBritain. I invited John tocollaborate with me. The playwas called 'Freedom To Forget,'and a Gala Performance in aid ofthe RAF Benevolent Fund washeld, by totally uncannycoincidence on the 31st October1990. The 31st October 1940 isnow officially remembered as thedate the Battle of Britain ended.A number of 'The Few' who livedreasonably local to Farnhamwere able to attend the GalaNight performance. Over thecourse of 1990, beingcommissioned to write the playenabled me to meet so many ofthe 'Few' who had always beenmy heroes. Also, WingCommander N.P.W. 'Pat'Hancock OBE DFC, thenSecretary of the Battle of BritainFighter Association, forwardedletters I wrote to members of theAssociation and is how I obtainedso many on labels. For everysignature I received I made adonation to the B.O.B. FighterAssociation to help with thefinancial cost of 'OperationHomecoming,' which brought somany of 'The Few' livingoverseas to the U.K., for the 50thAnniversary celebrations. TheCzech and Pole signatories tothis book were obtained at areception held at Maidstone onSaturday 22nd September 1990.All of the other actual signatorieswere obtained when I was a

TheMachmeter indicates the currentspeed to the Flight Crew and isiconic in that it encompasses the

whole essence of the Concordeoperation. These are very rare asonly a few were made. Only afew of these ever appear on themarket starting in 2003 when onesold for £28000 and in 2007 onfetched £27000. Lot: 51The Concorde Air Intake ControlPanel. In supersonic flight ataround 1,350 mph (22½ miles perminute) Concorde’s Rolls-Royce Olympus 593 enginescould only accept incoming air ataround 500 mph. Consequentlythe air had to be slowed down inthe eleven foot long ‘Air Intake’in front of each engine face. Thiswas done by a carefullycontrolled pair of ‘IntakeRamps’ which were positionedprecisely to generate a series ofshock waves in the intake. The‘Air Intake Control Panel’ is theunique item that allowed theFlight Crew to manage thiscomplex process. Located on theFlight Engineer’s Panel, it is oneof the key items that enabledConcorde to successfully fly atMach 2 for over three hours – afeat that no other aircraft beforeor since has achieved. ThisConcorde Air Intake ControlPanel will come with detaileddescriptions and an explanationof how it works from MikeBannister himself. Mike will alsoautograph the piece itself if thebuyer would like this. GoodconditionEstimate: £8,000.00 - £10,000.00

Lot: 54The Concorde Pitot Nose Probe.Concorde’s iconic ‘PitotProbe’ is the point on the frontof the nose cone and definesConcorde’s shape. It is also thepoint of maximum heating on theaircraft. At Mach 2 thetemperature on the Probe canreach 127° Celsius. The probe is1ft 9in (0.53m) long andmeasures both static anddynamic air pressure. The onboard systems then convertthose measurements into aircraftspeed. This particular Nose PitotProbe was presented to CaptainMike Bannister, Chief ConcordePi at British Airways, after thefinal Concorde flight inrecognition of his 22 years flyingConcorde during which heaccumulated more Concordeflying hours, and moresupersonic flying hours, thananyone else in the World. conditionEstimate: £8,000.00 - £10,000.00

Lot: 55The Concorde Centre of GravityController. Concorde has aunique system for ‘Centre ofGravity Control’. The positionthrough which the lift developedby an aircraft’s wing isconsidered to act is called the‘Centre of Lift’ (CL). Theposition through which theweight/mass of an aircraft isconsidered to act is called the‘Centre of Gravity’ (CG). Thedistance between these twopoints generates a ‘lever arm’which has to be balanced by theposition of the aircraft’s flyingcontrols. At a given unchangingweight: In a conventional aircraftthe CL will move aft as flightspeed increases, the CG remainsstationary and the lever arm willincrease. This change in trim iscountered by deflecting flyingcontrols from the optimumposition thereby generatingadditional aircraft drag. Increaseddrag results in increased fuelconsumption. On Concorde theCL again moves aft as speedincreases but the ‘Centre ofGravity Control’ system isutilised to move fuel around theaircraft which thereby moves theCentre of Gravity. The objectiveis to balance the CL movementby CG movement therebyminimising the deflection of flyingcontrols and the associatedincrease in fuel consumption. The control of this system is afunction of the Flight Engineerand the controller is located inthe centre of the FlightEngineer’s Panel. It is a crucialsystem on Concorde andessential to its ability to fly atspeeds up to, and including,Mach 2 (twice the speed ofsound). This Concorde Centre ofGravity Controller will come witha description and paperworkcompiled by Mike Bannisterhimself. Mike will also autographthe piece itself if the buyer wouldlike this. Lot: 56The Concorde Centre of GravityPosition Indicator. The movementof the Centre of Gravity has to becontained within certain limits. Atany given speed there is amaximum forward position‘FWD’ and a maximum aftposition ‘AFT’. The CG limit bugs areorange pointers labelled FWDand AFT on the right-hand side ofthe instrument. The red and blackdiagonal striped flag appearsacross the middle of the scale toindicate a servo imbalance, bugsjammed, loss of power supplyand loss of validity signal to theCG pointer. "When I received the loosematerial back from the Army Itook it to our in-house clean roomwhere it was processed into thefinal book format. Each sheetwas trimmed to final size andlaminated back to back with thenext page. Holes were punched, covers were prepared and ringswere inserted to make the LMLUNAR SURFACE MAPS into aloose-leaf book. "Two exactcopies of each book are built. Inthis case it was serial number1001 and 1002. Serial number1001 is always designated to bethe flight article and 1002 thebackup. In the event that 1001 isdamaged than 1002 can besubstituted. In the case of Apollo13 serial number 1001 was thebook that was flown.
