I n s t a l l i n g t h e P l u g - i nPlug-ins are software that run inside another application to enhance and extend theapplication’s capabilities. The application plug-ins run inside is called the “HostApplication”. Each host application has their own location they require plug-ins tobe installed to in order for them to be used.

To the right we have listed the more common programs that use plug-ins. If yourprogram is not listed we encourage you to read in the host application manual onwhere to install plug-ins.

Once the plug-in is installed you must restart your host application before the plug-in will show up. Most host applications have a filter menu where plug-ins will showup under. Check your host application manual for how to find plug-ins that havebeen installed.

One additional item you should be aware of when installing plug-ins: many hostapplications allow you to set the preferences for where it will look for plug-ins. Youcan change the folder the host application looks to when loading up plug-ins. Theapplication will not load any plug-ins that are not in the location you have defined inyour preferences. Make sure your application is looking to the folder you haveinstalled Photo/Graphic Edges into. All install locations listed to the right show thedefault plug-in folder locations the preference is set to.

L o c a t i n g t h e P l u g - i nPhoto/Graphic Edges, if properly installed into the plug-ins folder, should show upunder the menu where the host application displays Photoshop compatible plug-ins. Photoshop, for example, will show the plug-in you just installed at the bottom ofthe Filter menu under the Auto FX name. If the plug-in is not showing up in thehost application you should take the following actions:

• Verify that you installed the plug-in into the correct folder. Do this by opening upthe folder you installed into and seeing if the plug-in is there.• If the plug-in is installed into the correct folder you should next check to see if thehost application’s preferences are set to load plug-ins from the location youinstalled into. Adobe Photoshop, for example, allows users to set the plug-in folderfrom the Preferences menu. Make sure this is pointing to the same folder youinstalled the plug-in into.

If you require personal assistance installing this software, please call us at (205)980-0056. We will be glad to help you get up and running. We do request thatbefore calling you retry the installation instructions again and make certain you areplacing the plug-in inside the right folder and that you have restarted your hostapplication after the installation process.

Memory Management on the MacM a k i n g S u r e T h e r e i s E n o u g h F r e e M e m o r yIf you are running on earlier versions of the Mac OS you will be required to manage your memory carefully.Graphics applications require a lot of memory. Photo/Graphic Edges is no exception to this rule and due tothe dynamic nature of the software, it requires more than most. You should provide Photo/Graphic Edgeswith as much available memory as you can to ensure fast and trouble free operations. You may considerrunning this software as a stand-alone version (versus as a plug-in) if you run into memory problems. Wehighly recommend Mac OS X as memory management is superior and our software runs more efficientlyunder the Mac OS X system.

When using the application version of Photo/Graphic Edges you should adjust the memory settings ashigh as possible. When using the plug-in version of Photo/Graphic Edges you should lower the amount ofmemory your host application (Adobe Photoshop, for example) is using. This frees up more memory forPhoto/Graphic Edges. Photo/Graphic Edges uses free RAM that is not being used by any other program.

F r e e i n g U p M e m o r yHere are some ways you can free up memory on the Mac

• Run this software as a stand-alone application instead of as a plug-in• Quit all non-essential applications that are running.• Reduce the amount of memory that essential applications are using• Reduce the amount of memory Adobe Photoshop is using. Photoshop

can operate efficiently on 50MB of memory while you work in Photo/Graphic Edges

P h o t o / G r a p h i c E d g e s ™ O p e r a t i o n s M a n u a l

If you are new to the Mac, here is how youfind out how much memory is being used byyour computer. Go to the Apple menu in theupper left corner of the monitor and choosethe About This Computer menu item.

Once the About This Computer window appears you can see how muchRAM each program is using. You can also see how much free RAM thereis by looking at the Largest Unused Block. In the example above there is 127.1 MB of free RAM available.

Later versions of the Mac OS allow you to double click on the applicationname shown in the About This Computer Windows. This will open up theInfo window for the application and will let you adjust the memory. Earlierversions require you to go to the finder and locate the application thenpress Command I to open the Info window to set the memory parameters.

Unless you are working with very large images you can keep Photoshop’sPreferred Size memory to a setting that leaves a lot of Free Ram for otherapplications such as Photo/Graphic Edges.

The Adobe Photoshop last filter commandlets you reapply the Photo/Graphic Edgeseffect again on other images or layers

The plug-in version of Photo/Graphic Edges can be accessed fromwithin the host application wherever filters and plug-ins are run from -please reference your application’s manual for details on where toaccess plug-ins.

In Photoshop, open an image and go to the Filter menu. You will see theAuto FX name at the bottom of the Filter menu. Scroll down to the AutoFX menu and a sub-menu will appear showing you the Photo/GraphicEdges plug-in. All Photo/Graphic Edges series effects are located underthis one plug-in.

U s i n g P h o t o s h o p A c t i o n s t o A u t o m a t eP h o t o / G r a p h i c E d g e s E f f e c t sOne of the most powerful features of Adobe Photoshop is the ability to record and replay a series of steps while you work inPhotoshop. By recording these steps you are able to produce powerful effects that can be reproduced again and again with minimalinput during playback. Actions allow you to combine different filters, movement of layers, changes to selections and more.

Photo/Graphic Edges is actions aware and works with Photoshop 4 and higher actions. You can create a new action using thePhotoshop actions palette and then go into Photo/Graphic Edges and apply your settings and they will be recorded as part of theaction for playback at a later time.

If you are working in a production oriented environment and you need to do batch processing, the support Photo/Graphic Edges hasfor actions can be of great benefit. To learn more about using actions, please refer to your Photoshop user manual or visit the Auto FXwebsite.

L a s t F i l t e r C o m m a n dPhoto/Graphic Edges supports the PhotoShop Last Filter command functionality. This means that you can apply an effect usingPhoto/Graphic Edges and then open another image and go to the Filter menu and at the top of the menu select Photo/Graphic Edges(Windows: Control F / Mac: Command F). This will reapply the last effect to the new image. Certain effects that are size dependant willvary if the image you have reapplied the effect to is different from the initial image. Results may vary due to the way the effects arewritten.

Presets area great way for you to store your favorite settings or temporarily record something you like so you can goback to that point whenever you want. Presets take up virtually no memory so don’t worry about using upvaluable disk space. You can save an unlimited number of presets in Photo/Graphic Edges.

Creating a preset is easy. Once you have an effect setting that youlike, click on the Save button located on the control bar. This willactivate the Save Preset dialog box. Once you have given your preseta name it is stored under the Special Effects > Effect name it wassaved from.

P r e s e t s C a n B e A d d e d o r S h a r e dYou can add presets or share presets that you find or create. Photo/Graphic Edges stores each presetindependently in a folder you can easily access. Go to the Photo/Graphic Edges folder and you will see afolder inside it called Effect Presets. In here you will find folders for each of the effects. If you havedownloaded presets from the Auto FX website (www.autofx.com) or another source and wish to add theseto your program, all you have to do is locate the correct effect folder for that preset and drop it in. Thepreset will appear in the Photo/Graphic Edges preset catalog next time you use Photo/Graphic Edges. Youcan also share your presets with others by copying the presets from these folders.

All Photo/Graphic Edges presets have the .iqp and matching .thm file extension. When sharing presets, make sure to include both the .iqp and the matching .thm file for the preset.

Presets Are Backwards and Forwards Compatible And Cross PlatformPhoto/Graphic Edges presets are designed to be version independent. This means that you don’t have toworry whether the preset will work with your version of Photo/Graphic Edges. If the preset was created witha more advanced version you will get a result based on what features your version is capable of supporting. In most cases this means that if you find a preset that is older it will be 100% feature compliant. It alsomeans that if you are working on an older version of Photo/Graphic Edges you will be able to load inpresets created by users that are working in newer versions, although not all features will be available toyou. All Photo/Graphic Edges presets are cross-platform so you can share your presets between Mac andWindows.

Presets are selected from the effect menu. As you roll your cursor over theeffect name you will see a ‘Select Preset’ submenu appear. Selecting thiswill bring up a visual catalog of all the presets for that effect (see screenshotof Preset Catalog below)

Photo/Graphic Edges features a visual preset catalog that allows you to seesmall thumbnails of the presets you have saved. Presets are displayed in alphabetical order.. Click on a preset and it will highlight. Press the OKbutton and the selected preset will apply to your artwork.

There are two different types of presets in this program. Effect Presets and Layer Presets. Effect presetscapture and replay a single effect. Layer presets work much in the same way except they capture entiresets of layers and dynamically render them onto the currently open file. A layer preset can recreatecomplex visual effects allowing you to save time and reapply creative solutions to different images.

L a y e r P r e s e t s A r e R e s o l u t i o n I n d e p e n d e n tAs our presets are resolution independent you can apply effects on smaller ‘comp’ images and thenreapply them to larger images at a later date. This dynamic resolution independent feature also lets youwork with different sized files and reapply effects.

Appending Presets To LayersWhenever you use the Load Layer Preset option it replaces all effect layers and applies them to the file youcurrently have open. This powerful feature lets you load in effects created with several layers and controlsettings and add them to existing layer sets.

When you Append Presets the new layers that are built will be addedabove the currently selected layer when you activate the Append .

Layer Presets show a visual preset catalog just like normal presets do. The preview shows the captured result of all thelayers being applied together to create the new look.

To capture a layer preset click the layer palette optionsbutton and choose Save Layer Preset. This will record thesettings of the layer palette and rebuild the effects, masksand any correction layers you have applied on the layersto whichever image you have onscreen.

W o r k i n g W i t h L a y e r sD y n a m i c L a y e r sAll of the effects in this software are dynamically generated. This means that they are created andrendered each time you make a change to them or anything that affects them. Unlike layers inmost image editing programs, these effect layers do not consist of pixels so you have to think ofthem as close cousins to a traditional layer - but with many differences. Layers allow you to stackeffects in a visually organized manner and reorder them to produce new results. As the effects aredynamic you can generate a multitude of looks when you combine effects together on the layerspalette.

B a c k g r o u n d I m a g eWhen you first open the software with an image in the preview the image is represented on thelayer palette at the bottom called Background. Using the stand-alone version the Backgroundname is substituted for your File Name. You cannot move or otherwise adjust the backgroundimage as all layers above it rely on this image to remain static.

The example layers palette shown below is how the layers palette will look when you import animage from Photoshop into the plug-in version. The image will be called Background. If you openan image in the stand-alone application version the name of the image is shown instead ofBackground.

On the layers palette you will see a basic set of controls that let you create new layers, clone the selected layer, create layer masks and delete highlightedlayers. Other controls are the Opacity and Layer Options menu.

O p a c i t yThis control adjusts the currently selected layer’s global opacity so that it willblend with the layer beneath it. A higher setting makes the layer content moreopaque and a lower setting makes the layer contents more transparent. Manyeffects have individual settings for opacity that are applied on a per-controlbasis or for the entire effect. You may use both the Layer Opacity and the localeffect opacity controls together. A 50% Layer Opacity and a 25% local effectcontrol opacity would render the effect 75% transparent and 25% opaque.

Using the Masking Layers in Photo/Graphic Edges you can apply effects behind masked areas orapply effects to just the areas you have selected with the mask. When a mask is present an effectcan target either the Foreground or the Background. The Foreground is the area of interest thatyou have selected using a mask. The Background is the area that resides outside the area ofinterest.

Effects that use masks always look below their order in the layer stack and use the first mask theyfind beneath them.

S e l e c t i o n M a s k sWhen you open an image that already contains masking data a Selection Mask layer is created atthe bottom of the layers palette.

When you load up a Photoshop layer using the plug-in version it imports the transparent areas ofa layer as the default mask. Likewise, if you make a selection on a photo in Photoshop and thenload up the plug-in, the selection is used as the imported selection layer.

Files you open with the stand-alone version of this software may also contain masks. The .pngand .psd file formats are both capable of supporting transparent areas.

R e t r a c t i o n / E x p a n s i o n B r u s hThe Retraction / Expansion tool is useful to bring the edges ofa mask in or to push it out from the present location. It is usefulfor cleaning up the edges of a mask automatically. Select thebrush and adjust the Retraction slider to define a positive(expand) or negative (retract) setting and then brush over theedges of the mask. The mask will change each time you brushover it. Repeated strokes will increase the result.

M a s k B r u s hThe Mask Brush allows you to brush on where you want themask to be placed. As you brush, the Selection Color is placedover your image so you can tell where you have brushed. Usethe Selection Color controls to define the opacity and color ofthis visual guide. The Mask Brush uses the Brush Controls todefine Opacity / Size and Feather. The lower the opacity on thebrush controls the more transparent the mask becomes in thearea where it is used. The feather control makes the edges ofthe brush softer, creating a natural blended area for the maskwhere the brush is used. Reduce the size of the brush for amore precise control over masking edges of your subject andmake the size larger for filling in areas away from the edges.

E r a s e rThe Eraser removes areas where you have drawn a mask. Usethis tool to brush away areas of your mask. The Eraser usesthe Brush Cotnrols to define Opacity / Size and Feather.

In the example above you can see the masked area highlighted inred. Notice how close the mask is to the edge. If a mask is tooclose to the edge of the image data, edge artifacts can sometimesbe seen. Use the Retraction Brush with a negative setting (-3 in thisexample) to bring the mask in away from the edges of the image.

In the example above you can see retraction brush has shrunk thepixels in from the edges of the image to give a cleaner mask.

Use the Lasso / Straight Edge or Rectangular Marqueetools to remove unwanted masking areas quickly byholding down the Alt (option on Mac) key and using thetool to remove the mask areas you don’t want.

M a s k i n g L a s s oThe Masking Lasso tool allows you to trace around the subject using a freehand tool to createa mask. To remove part of a mask using this tool hold down the Alt (option key on Mac) anddraw. To add to a mask click at a point on the edge of the subject you want to mask and tracealong the subject slightly inside the edges of the image. Do not release the mouse until youhave completely traced around the image and have reached the starting point. When you let upon the mouse the Masking Lasso tool closes the area and fills in the mask. It will draw astraight line from the point you release the mouse to the start point, so it is important that youcomplete the trace before releasing the mouse. This tool is not suited for complex objectmasking as it works best in smaller easier to trace areas.

S t r a i g h t E d g eThe Straight Edge tool draws from point to point using a straight line. To remove part of a maskusing this tool hold down the Alt (option key on Mac) and draw. To add to a mask click on yourimage at a starting point and then move the mouse to the next point and you will see a lineextends from the start point to wherever your mouse moves. S e l e c t i o n C o l o rThe Selection Color control defines the color and opacity for the visual representation of wherethe mask is placed on your image. E default. There are times, however, when you may need to use this option. Turning it on willmake all layers above the masking layer visible. By default when working on the Masking Layeronly the layers beneath the Masking Layer are shown.

T y p eThe Type menu defines how the mask will interact with any other masks in your document. When you create a mask it acts independently of other masks (Independent mode) or it cancombine with other masks to form a complete shape (Combine Masking). Combine Maskingwould take a square mask on one layer and combine it with a circle mask on another layer togive you a new shape mask for your document. Combine Masking will ignore any masks set towork independently. The Original Mask option uses any masking information that was brought inwith the image when you opened it up. If you opened a .png file that has transparency, forexample, the transparency would be converted to a Selection Mask. When you create newMasking Layers you can use this ‘Original’ masking information as the basis for your new maskby choosing the Original Mask option in the Type menu.

I n v e r t S e l e c t i o nThe Invert Selection option takes the mask shape and reverses it so that it affects the areaopposite what is drawn. A circle drawn onscreen and not inverted would be the area masked. Acircle drawn onscreen and then inverted masks everything but the circle shape.

S m o o t h E d g eThe Smooth Edge option is available only when the Type is set to Combine Masking. TheSmooth Edge control smooths and blends the edges of the different Masking Layers together toform a more perfect composite.

# 6 and # 7 appear only when the Lasso, Straight Edge or Masking Marquee tools are active.

O p a c i t y / S o f t n e s sThe Opacity / Softness control takes the masks on the document created with the selected tool(Lasso, Straight Edge or Masking Marquee) and adjusts the opacity and how they blend into theimage or other mask areas in the document. Lower settings make the masked area moretransparent and higher settings make the masked area more opaque.

A n t i - A l i a sThe Anti-Alias control takes the masks on the document created with the selected tool (Lasso,Straight Edge or Masking Marquee) and adjusts the edge of the mask to soften it with ablended anti-alias. The Hue range has been limited to work withinpractical boundaries so over shifting of colors is prevented.

S a t u r a t i o nThe Saturation slider makes the image colors become morevibrant and colorful by increasing the color intensity. Unlike other saturation methods used by many image editingprograms, Photo/Graphic Edges uses a carefully constructedset of algorithms to help prevent over saturation and colorburning that can result from too much vibrancy. As you adjustcolors certain stop points are reached and will not be exceededto prevent oversaturation of the image.

In this example, we will also show you how to make the photo cover thecomplete preview and the burned edges come in from the sides.

S t e p 1Load up a photo in PGE and thenselect the Burned Edge effect fromthe Photo/Graphic menu. After theburned edge appears around yourphoto you will want to apply a tex-ture to the background.

The Texture catalog will appear onscreen allowing you to select atexture that will be filled behind the effect.

The Texture fills in behind the burned edge. Use the Softness slider on theSurface Tab controls to make the texture appear softer if needed. In thiscase we applied a small amount of softness to diffuse the texture.

Click on the Lighting Tab andthen turn on the DisplayShadows button.

The burn often looks morerealistic if you have a shadowunder it.

Adjust the shadow setting togive the effect a nice softshadow.

S t e p 4

The next step will require you toselect the Transform Effect tooland resize all four corners of theeffect where they are outside ofthe preview area.

You will notice that when you transform the effect where the handles areall outside the preview area and are sitting on the canvas area that theeffect is no longer seen onscreen and you see just your photo.

S t e p 5

Adjust the brush to have 100% opacity and a soft 30% feather. Makethe size of the brush fit your needs. In our example we used a largerbrush and then resized the brush smaller to add more detailed burnmarks on the image.

After you have drawn your burnedareas with the brush use the Strengthand Roughen Size sliders to refine thelook of the brushed areas.

Making the Size smaller and theStrength higher gives you smaller andstronger burns with good definition.

As the needs ofyour project will vary and the look you are after for each image is different, it is important that yoube able to quickly find the right edge look.

When you are viewing the Edge Catalog there are a few basic tips you should know.

1) When you load the catalog up from an effect it will automatically return to the last edge that youloaded up. This allows you to quickly find your way back to the volume and edge number youwere working with and explore from there.

2) You may load an edge by double clicking on it. This is faster than clicking once to select anedge and then clicking the OK button.

3) You may load up any custom edge effect of your own by pressing the Custom button at thebottom of the Edge Catalog. You will be presented with a standard Open File directory. Customedges should be saved in .jpg file format as either RGB or Grayscale. Black in the custom edgewill be removed from the image while white areas will be preserved. Gray areas will be semi-transparent.

4) The History tab on the Edge Catalog shows you a chronological history of the edges you haveloaded up and worked with in the past. This enables you to quickly find an edge effect you haveused before and reapply it to your current project.

S e t t i n g U p Y o u r D o c u m e n t H o w t o S e t u p Y o u r D o c u m e n t T o C r e a t e A M o n t a g eIn some cases you may want to add more space around your image in Photoshop to allow for otherimages to be added to your composition. This can be done easily and with a few simple steps.

1) Place your image on a layer or double click on the layer nameand change it from Background to Layer 0 to make the layer havetransparency.

2) Use the Photoshop Image > Canvas Size dialog to add spacearound your image. As your image is on a transparent layer thenew space added around your image will be transparent. Themain point is that you need to surround your image with bothspace and transparency.

Over the next several pages we will take you through a step-by-stepprocess of building the image above. This example took less than 10minutes to create with several variations being tried.

The first step we took was in setting up the document in Photoshop on alayer as shown in the screenshot to the immediate left.

Page 65: Autofx Photographic Edges 6.0 Manual

S e t t i n g U p Y o u r D o c u m e n t H o w t o S e t u p Y o u r D o c u m e n t T o C r e a t e M o n t a g eBefore you use Montage you need to setup your document to provide space around yourimage. If you do not allow for extra space around your image you will need to shrink yourimage in the Montage effect to make room for the other edges you will create

S e t t i n g U p Y o u r I m a g e I n L a y e r sBefore taking your image into PGE and applying a Montage effect, make sure that it is on alayer of its own. A single starting image surrounded by transparency is the ideal setup tobegin with. If your image is not already on a layer, you can easily change this. To make animage have transparency and be on a ‘layer’ you must convert the Background layer into a

regular layer.

To do this, double click on theBackground layer on the layerspalette. The Make Layer dialogwindow will appear. You can clickOK and use the default Layer 0name or you can give the layer aname of your own. After you havechanged the layer name, it willnow contain transparency.

I n c r e a s e t h e C a n v a s S i z e A r o u n d T h e I m a g eNow that our image is on a transparent layer you need to allow additional spacearound the image to create our effect.

Now that we have added the extra room around the effect we will go intoPhoto/Graphic Edges and apply the Montage effect. The effect will automatically selectthe image from the layer so you do not have to select the image before going intoPhoto/Graphic Edges.

The larger the montage, the more space we recommend you create around yourimage before going into Photo/Graphic Edges.

We recommend that you save your file before going into Photo/Graphic Edges. As yourdocument contains transparency, you will be required to save the file in the Photoshop.psd format.

There are times when you may want ot use an edge and then reshape it to fit the image or your designneeds. Putty Edges allows you to push, pull, twirl, enlarge, reduce and reshape the edge using deformationtechnologies.

The first step is to use the Select Edge button toaccess the Edge Catalog. Select an edge andload it onto your image.

Next select the tool you intendto use to reshape the edge. Inthis case we are using theTwirl tool.

After you have selected thetool, set the brush attributes. In this example we used anOpacity of 60% to make thechanges gradual and to givemore control over theprocess.

Next the Push brush is selected. Using thesame brush settings (Opacity of 60% and Sizeof 600) the brush is started on the canvas anddrawn inward into the image. The objective is

to push the edge down towards the girl’s hat to tighten up theedge around the image.

After the tool and brush settings are defined you areready to start reshaping the edge. The Twirl andEnlarge tool work best by clicking with the brush overan area of the edge. Each time you click the edge willdeform. In the example shown above the brush sizewas set too 600 so that the brush was very large.

The Twirl effect was applied to the edge by clickingover the edge in different areas. Each time the brushwas clicked over an area the edge twirled more inthat direction. Using a lower opacity (in this case60%) the twirl is gradually applied.

Change the color using the Color Picker. In this case we selected a darkgreen/blue color.

Next we selected a Texture Map that would be applied to the backgroundcolor. The Texture Map gives the colored surface a textured appearance sothat is is not a flat color. We selected the Striated pattern from the menu.

The color we selected using the Color Picker is now shown behind the effect.

The Texture Map (shown in the example above) gives the color a pleasingdepth pattern. Using the Texture Strength and Imprint Size controls the effectcan be further adjusted for a stronger or more subtle appearance.

You may have a different Light Tile applied for both the background and the effect.

T a r g e t M e n uThe Target Menu allows you to define where you want thelight tile to be applied to. You may select Background or applythe tile to another aspect of the effect (Edge Effect / Vignette /Image in Frames).

L i g h t T i l e M e n uThe Light Tile Menu allows you to load up a light tile from theOpen Dialog. You may also decide not to use a light tile and ifso, you may remove it by selecting None from this menu.

O p a c i t yThe light tile will apply a shading mask to the image that may betoo dark for your needs. If it is too dark, adjust this control toreduce the opacity of the light tile as it is applied to your effect. The result is a lighter, less noticeable application of the tile.

S o f t n e s sThe Softness slider softens the light tile to smooth it out as it is applied. In some cases, depending on the tile selectedand settings of the softness control, the results can be verynoticeable. In most cases, however, the result of using the softness control are subtle.

L i g h t T i l e O r i e n t a t i o n M e n uThe Light Tile Orientation menu allows you to rotate the lighttile in specified directional increments. D e l e t e L i g h t P o i n tClick the Delete Light Point button to delete the currently selectedLight Point from the Light Sphere. When a Light Point is deletedthe corresponding Shadow Point is deleted (unless the LinkLighting to Shadows checkbox is turned off).

L i g h t S p h e r eThe Light Sphere is very easy to use and understand. On the LightSphere you will see a circle. This is called a Light Point. The LightPoint represents a source of light. It is used to set the direction andheight of the light as it shines on the effect. If multiple Light Pointsare in use, the active light point will be circled in red. The ShadowPoint (located on the Shadow Sphere) that corresponds to the LightPoint is also highlighted in red and will automatically move whenthe Light Point is moved.

If the Light Point were in the middle of the sphere then this wouldrepresent a light being placed directly above the effect. You wouldsee very little shading as overhead lights do not cast shadows andremove most of the shading from an effect.

As the Light Point is moved towards the outer edge of the LightSphere the height of the light is lowered and more shading andcast shadows will appear.

The active Shadow Point on the Shadow Sphere is circled inred. Each Shadow Point reflects the color you have selectedfor the shadow.

A m b i e n t L i g h tThe Ambient Light Source slider controls the strength of the ambient light that isreflecting around the effect. Ambient light does not come from any one source or direc-tion but instead represents light that is reflected from existing sources. Adjusting theambient light will change the effect lighting evenly. The Ambient Color button at the endof the slider gives you access to the color picker so you can choose the color tint ofthe ambient light. Click on the button and the color picker window will appear. To betterunderstand ambient light, imagine shining a flashlight at a wall in a dark room. Thelight coming from the flashlight would represent the Light Point that you place on thesphere. The ambient light would be the light that bounces off the wall to light the rest ofthe room.

G l a r e S t r e n g t hThe Glare Strength slider controls how much glare is generated for effects that havelighting directly over an effect (Light Points positioned in the center of the LightSphere). The glare that is cast back from the effect when the light strikes it is controlled with this slider. Reducing this Glare Strength setting reduces the amount of glare that you see when the light is positioned over or above an effect. Glare canoccur when a relatively smooth surface reflects a light that is nearly directly overhead, causing Sheen to cover nearly the entire surface.

L i n k L i g h t i n g t o S h a d o w sPhoto/Graphic Edges allows you to automatically create shadows that match the lightdirection and shading that is generated by the Light Points. When the Link Lighting toShadows checkbox is on whenever you create a new Light Point or change the direc-tion of an existing Light Point, the corresponding Shadow Point is generated or adjust-ed, respectively. If you uncheck this option you are able to create new Light Pointswithout adding new shadows and you can also create new shadows that have no LightPoints associated with them.

If you uncheck this option and create new Shadow Points on the Shadow Sphere andthen check this option back on your custom adjustments and Shadow Points are hid-den. They are still retained and will be shown again if the checkbox is turned off again.

D i s p l a y S h a d o w sThe Display Shadows checkbox turns the effect shadows on or off. When this check-box is on the shadows formed by this effect will be saved or applied with the effect. Ifyou do not want shadows on your effect turn off this checkbox.

S h a d o w S p h e r eThe Shadow Sphere is used to control the shadows that are generated under certain types of effects. Shadow Points are used to control the individual shadows. An effect can have multiple shadows that represent multiple light sources beingcast from different directions and at different intensities.

When the Link Lighting to Shadows option is turned on the Shadow Points are created and controlled automatically by the Light Sphere. When this option is turnedoff you can click on the Shadow Sphere to create new Shadow Points or adjustexisting shadow points by dragging them around and / or adjusting their settingsusing the shadow controls. You may have multiple Shadow Points, each with independent settings that allow you to simulate real world shading with primary andsofter secondary shadows that are generated from multiple light sources. Shadowcontrol sliders adjust the currently selected Shadow Point.

S h a d o w C o l o r / O p a c i t yThe Shadow Color / Opacity control sets the color and opacity for the currentlyselected Shadow Point.
