Thesis Statement: Today I will talk to you about how challenging it is to have an autistic family member or friend. Credibility Material: I chose this topic because I feel that most people have never experienced living or spending time with an autistic person. Since my brother is autistic this topic is dear to my heart. Preview: Good morning everyone, today I will be talking to you about the day to day challenges faced by autistic children and of course their parents and family members. Transition to Body: First of all I will enlighten you about autism. BODY 1. First Main Point: what is autism? Definition A. Sub-point/supporting Material: what is autism? According to the Autism Society in Maryland U.S.A. “Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first two years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills”. B. Sub-point/supporting Material: What causes autism? Stated by the Autism Society in Maryland, U.S.A.“There is no known single cause for autism, but it is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function”. Transition into second point: So by now you have a general understanding on what is autism. I will now talk about the everyday challenges faced by autistic children. 2. National Autistic Society in the UK, “The three main areas of difficulty which all people with autism share are sometimes known as the 'triad of impairments'”.

B. Subpoint/supporting material: autistic child’s diet? Stated by Murch, S. and J Pediatr in 2005 “Foods and drinks containing wheat, barley, rye, oats, or anything made from these grains are avoided”.

Transition into third point: even with these disabilities autistic children and adults are able to achieve amazing things.

3. Third Main Point: Achievements of autistic children. Subpoint/supporting material: My brother is able to name every part in an engine of both cars and planes. A. Subpoint/supporting material: “Stephen Wiltshire architectural artist,

Greece Athena High School basketball coach Jason McElwain, who scored 20 points in the last four minutes of an important game; and Tito Mukhopadhyay, author, poet, and philosopher”.

Transition to conclusion: So as you can see if one is determined we are able to achieve anything and no disability no matter how severe can stop us. CONCLUSION Summary: Today I talked about autism and how sometimes it is highly challenging and requires a lot of energy and patience. Concluding Remarks:

Having a brother who is autistic I know how it feels to constantly feel that you have to take care of a person no matter how old he gets he needs someone with him. But, having said that I learnt how to appreciate the simple things that he is able to achieve and I am so proud of him I couldn’t have ask for a better brother.
