2017ND
Stevenson School is honored to once again serve as the host location for the
2017 Authors and Ideas Festival.
Since 1952, Stevenson has prepared generations of promising young people
for honest and honorable lives while training them for the academic and social
demands of college study. Our graduates are known as much for their humility as
they are for their initiative, and for helping to make the colleges they attend and
the communities that surround them better places.
As a California school with a global sensibility, Stevenson is a hive of thinking,
doing, and being. Located at what is known as “the greatest meeting of land and
sea in the world,” we are dedicated to helping our students navigate their way to
joyful lives of meaning and purpose.
Across its lower, middle, and upper divisions, Stevenson is premised on a vision
of education as the means by which we discover our world and contribute to its
transformation, and a belief that one’s education is best pursued in the company
of others, for others’ benefi t as well as one’s own. In this spirit of our community,
we invite you to listen to others with an open heart, to speak spontaneously and
succinctly, and to be willing to interrogate your own assumptions about what you
hold to be true. Of course, we also invite you to relish our beautiful setting that
lends itself marvelously—for our students and you, our guests—to contemplation
and fellowship.
Thank you again for being a part of this special event.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kevin M. Hicks ‘85

STUDENT IDEAS FESTIVALThis year we celebrate the tenth year of the Student Ideas Festival. More
than 30,000 Monterey County middle and high school students have been inspired by Festival speakers. Students from more than 40 different schools throughout the county have interacted with many notable thinkers and leaders. As always, the speakers are introduced on stage by
local students during both the Student Ideas Festival and the Pebble Beach Authors and Ideas Festival. For many attending students, it has been their fi rst trip to Pebble Beach and their fi rst look at the ocean.
FESTIVAL 2 SCHOOLSFestival 2 Schools is celebrating its eighth year. Since it is impossible to
bring every Monterey County middle and high school to the Student Ideas Festival, a program was created to take inspiring speakers out to schools throughout the school year. Due to its reception and visible results, Festival 2 Schools has expanded every year. Many more school visits are planned for the remainder of
this school year, with emphasis placed on under-served areas. State tests show that only 32% of our county’s students in grades 6 through 11 are profi cient or advanced in the English language. The Festival wants to help change and improve these statistics through our expanding student programs.
e d u c at i o na l p r o g r a m s
EDUCATOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMFrom the beginning of the Authors and Ideas Festival there has been a serious commitment to celebrate those who work tirelessly to educate the youth of Monterey County. More than 2500 weekend scholarship passes have been provided over the years, and countless testimonials show how lessons learned during the Festival make their way back to classrooms throughout our area during each school year.
ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGNLast year the Festival developed a segment of the Monterey County Public Schools Anti-Bullying Campaign through the purchase of the right to thirty screenings of the multi-award winning documentary “A Brave Heart: The Elizabeth Ann “Lizzy” Velasquez Story.”
Screenings have included public schools, community assemblies, and parent and educator trainings. Facilitators have been provided for each screening. Lizzy had planned to join us this year to introduce her new book. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, her visit has been moved to fi rst quarter 2018.
STUDENT INTRODUCERSBeginning with the very fi rst Authors and Ideas Festival eleven years ago, students from Monterey County schools have played an integral role. Students are chosen to research, meet and introduce all of the speakers for the Festival. Students also serve as introducers for all presenters during the Student Ideas Festival held at Santa Catalina School.
Again this year we are proud to welcome students representing more than 150 migrant students who participated in Migrant Education Region XVI’s annual Speech and Debate Tournament. This group comes from public schools throughout Monterey County, from San Lucas to Castroville. Most, if not all of these Saturday morning student introducers have never performed in front of an audience of 500.
