The inspiration for creating this publication is football. Football is

a phenomenon of the 21st century, it amazes every day, it arous-

es emotions among hundreds of millions of people around the

world. The last final of the World Cup in Russia was watched by

over 160 million TV viewers. The best players achieve the status

of heroes of our time, films, books and monuments are dedicated

to them during Their lives. Football is also controversy: emerging

corruption, doping, objective treatment of players, unequal treat-

ment of women and men ...

Two years ago, we asked ourselves: are we able to use the strength

and the potential of football to solve social problems related to

everyday problems of young people? Can sport help young peo-

ple in a difficult social situation break through and overcome

barriers? Can football be used by teachers / youth workers in

education, not only on physical education lessons?

We have taken the challenge to find the answer. We started to

develop an idea that could serve as a support for young peo-

ple (including children) and for those working with youth in the

area of education and upbringing. Today, with a certain amount

of satisfaction, we can say: yes, football can help solve social

problems. Yes, football can help overcome the barriers young

people face. Yes, football can be used by people working with

youth. Football can enable youth and people working with youth

to develop social competences, social commitment. We hope

that in the long-term this program will strengthen relationships

and social ties as well as enrich participants with knowledge and

skills necessary, and at the same time useful, in functioning with

other people in today’s world. That is why we named it Fair Play

Program - because being Fair Play may go beyond sport, beyond

football, because being Fair Play is a value and pattern of attitude

for everyone and every day.

Thanks to the possibilities and financial support offered by the

Erasmus + program managed in Poland by the Foundation for the

Development of the Education System, together with the Czech

organization INEX-SDA we have created and implemented

a 2-year strategic partnership. As part of the project, we had the

opportunity to learn, explore, experience and test different meth-

ods of using football in social work. We also involved a total of

24 pedagogues, trainers, animators and teachers in the project

and together we conducted the Fair Play pilot program. It was

observed by researchers at the University of Warsaw’s Social

Challenges Unit, specializing in the issues of social involvement

of sport.

Fair Play Program is an educational- social program using the

unique football3 method and the idea of gamification, which,

when properly enriched and composed, form a very simple and

useful tool for non-formal education. We hope that the program

will appeal to young people and people working with youth

Remember that Fair Play in life and on the pitch is the key!

WHERE TO START?

STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3

Create a Fair Play Team.

On the following pages we show how to do it.

Develop the concept of gamification.

Our proposal is as follows. It consists of three tasks, each task should be clearly defined and embedded in a specific time interval.

Task 1: organize regular football3 classes.Task 2: plan and do something good. Task 3: organize a local fair play festival.

Start gamification with the Fair Play Team.

On the following pages we will show how the implementation of tasks looks like - we hope that we will provide you with a solid dose of inspiration!

HOW TO CREATE A FAIR PLAY TEAM?

MAZOWIECKI

13 locations from all over Poland took part in the Fair Play Program in 2018.

Each locality was led by a leader who created his team according to his experience and in the surroundings in which he is located. The Fair Play Teams created by the leaders were formed by various people from different backgrounds, schools, sports clubs, and Orlik sports fields.

Below we present the Fair Play Teams, who was their leader, how they were created and who was involved in the creation process.

Primarily, the leader was looking for members of the Fair Play Team among youth attending to classes conducted on Orlik and youth attending nearby school. This Fair Play team comes from a rural area. Most of the children are helping their parents on the farm, so arriving to Orlik is their springboard from the everyday hard work, that is running a farm.

The leader formed his team among children and youth from the School and Pre-School Complex in Mieroszyn - the school in which he teaches. At his choice he was guided primarily by the desire to help children from a small town suffering from the lack of comprehensive development opportunities. This youth, due to their origin from the rural environment, has less development opportunities.

The group was created by a certain process. The leader ran classes and more people came with each training session. Also, contact was made with the local Children’s Home, Family Support Centre, Voluntary Labor Corps and local schools. The group consisted primarily of children and young people from the local backyard. Everyone joined voluntarily and without urging, seeing the training sessions in the form of games and fun. Despite the fact that the group is from a very diverse environment (eg learning problems, incomplete families), its members were able to cooperate and learn from each other.

WHAT IS FOOTBALL3?

I all started at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where Andrés

Escobar (the captain of the Colombian national team) scored

an own goal in a match against the tournament hosts, which

led to the elimination of his team. After returning to his

country, he was brutally shot to death in his city Medelin.

The motive of the crime was retaliation for having scored an

own goal.

This event - the murder of a man, caused that more began to

look at the violence that took place in Colombia. The found-

er of the world organization StreetFootbalWorld (SFW) -

Jurgen Griesbeck (who then lived in Colombia) observed that

on the pitch young Colombians are able to talk, cooperate

and communicate with each other. A football-based program

was created to fight violence in Colombia.

The founder of SFW realized that there were other

organizations in the world that used the power of football

to solve various problems. The football3 method was

created, and further developed by streetfootballworld

network members around the world into a comprehensive

methodology to address a range of social topics, such as

gender equality, health and peacebuilding.

CONDUCTING OPEN FOOTBALL3 CLASSES

Fair Play The team had to organize football3 open classes.

The task is best carried out over a period of several months, e.g. 6 months.

Participants through the formula of football3 matches - participation in the dialogue zone learn communication and how

to give feedback. During the matches, they develop an attitude of respect towards the other person, they cooperate and

work as a team. Through method and regularity of classes, they learn discipline and dutifulness.

As part of this task, the leaders conduct an internal gamification among the participants, in which the following are scored:

attendance:

presence on the training +1 point, excused absence 0 points, unexcused absence -1 point

additional activities of the class participants:

involvement in volunteering +5 points per action, good behavior +2 points, good grades +2 points,

additional commitment, e.g. participation in school events +5 points.

Remember about the awards! This builds more motivation among the participants! The best scoring players should be

awarded, what award they will receive is dependent on the leader.

LET’S DO SOMETHING GOOD

The task was to make the Fair Play Team do something good, but what exactly, it depended on the team. They could get

involved in the already existing campaign, such as Szlachetna Paczka or food collection, or come up with something of

their own - clean up the local forest, help the person in need, collect money for the local charity.

The task is best performed for about 2 months – 1st month, preparation of the action, 2nd month - implementation of

the action.

Leaders award points to the members of the Fair Play Team for their involvement in the entire action, scoring is as follows:

creating an idea – 0-10 points for involvement in the process of creating an idea,

implementation of the idea – 0-10 points for involvement in the implementation process,

cooperation in a team – 0-10 points for fulfilling assigned duties or acting as a leader.

Remember about the awards! This builds more motivation among the participants! The best scoring players should be

awarded, what award they will receive is dependent on the leader.

Participants, by doing something good for someone, develop social sensitivity and empathy. They learn how to be good.

They try to define the needs of the local community by engaging in social activities.

At least several people should participate in the game. One of them, called Grandma,

is located at some distance from the rest of the group and is turned back or has her

eyes covered. The players start to run towards Grandma when she is not looking.

When she says the words “One, two, three, grandma watches thee”, she uncovers

her eyes or turns towards the players. All players must freeze and they have to be

honest with it – hey cannot move, speak or laugh. Grandma tries to provoke them

e.g. by making them laugh. Anyone who moves or laughs goes back to the starting

point. After a while, Grandma covers her eyes (or turns back) again and repeats the

cycle. Players try to reach and touch Grandma when she is not watching.

Task description

TASK 3.

Educational and social values

Scoring

ORGANIZATION OF FAIR PLAY FESTIVAL

The Fair Play team had to organize at least one Fair Play tournament. The tournaments could be organized for local

schools. The tournament was played using the football3 method. To cooperate in organizing the tournament, the Fair Play

Team could involve various partners: local organizations, sponsors (e.g. to purchase prizes), local government units. Each

Fair Play Team could organize several tournaments, for example in several schools. The tournaments could have taken

place during another event, such as City Day. Depending on the idea, it can be played in the hall, on Orlik sports field, pitch,

beach, in the city center etc. The task is best performed for about 2 months – 1st month, preparation of the action, 2nd

month - implementation of the action.

Participants acquire new skills through this task. Planning, because they participate in the planning process of the entire

event. The division of duties between all members of the Fair Play Team. Joint implementation of the Fair Play Festival.

And a summary. Remember that without a good plan and preparation, the chances of success are small.

Leaders can award points to the Team Play Fair Play members. The level of quantitative and qualitative engagement is

assessed at each of these stages: preparation 0-10 points, implementation 0-10 points, summary 0-10 points. Scoring

really depends on the involvement of all participants, then you can estimate the maximum and minimum commitment.

Awards Remember about the awards! This builds more motivation among the participants! The best scoring players should be

awarded, what award they will receive is dependent on the leader.

EXAMPLES OF THE FESTIVAL’S IMPLEMENTATION

Fair Play Football3 Festival Mragowo 2018

took place on 3-6 August 2018 in Mragowo.

60 football players from 6 locations took part

in it (Jabłoń Kościelna/Podlaskie Voivodeship,

Maszewo Duże/Masovian Voivodeship,

Mieroszyno/Pomeranian Voivodeship,

Mrągowo/Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship,

Nowa Góra/Masovian Voivodeship and

Powidz/Greater Poland Voivodeship).

Each location was convinced that it would

represent its own town, but during the first

day the teams were mixed, creating new teams

composed of people from different places they

did not know before. As a result, 15 new teams

of 4 players were created (there was at least

one girl in each team).

During the qualifying tournament, 15 teams were

divided into 3 groups (5 teams each). In each

group there were 10 matches with peer-to-peer

system. The matches were played on 2 previously

prepared pitches and lasted 7 minutes + 7 minutes

for both dialogue zones.

9 teams qualified for the final tournament, 3 teams

from each group which scored the highest number

of points. People that initially did not know one

another started to create teams in which they

learned communication, respect, support to each

other, cooperation and teamwork.

Introduction

The Fair Play Program is an initiative of the Youth Association of Sports Initiatives (MSIS) - a non-governmental organization. MSIS is an organization that implements and participates in various programs that use sport for social change that goes beyond sport.

The Fair Play program is one of such activities. It draws inspiration from foreign experience, using modified football activities called foot-ball3, but goes beyond the standard frame-work of football3 methodology. The program is a several-month intervention (football3 classes are just one of its elements), combining several tools to achieve a specific social change.

Objectives of the program

The program is intended to influence broadly understood life skills, which are defined as physical, behavioral or cognitive skills required to cope with everyday life. The program is to have a particular impact on the social competences of children and young people and their self-esteem.

Programs understood as behavioral interventions that involve sport can be effectively used, among others to work on social skills of children and youth. Sport used as the core of social programs is insufficiently known, and its power to influence the system of values, attitudes and behaviors is too often taken for granted, although it is not certain (Coalter, 2011). As Coakley (2004) points out, sport is the ground on which socialization takes place, not its contribution. One of the advantages of using sport as a carrier of social programs is the attractiveness of sport for children and youth from various social groups - including environments that offer less development opportunities.

The Fair Play program uses football3 - modified football classes. Football3 focuses on developing cooperation skills, solving interpersonal conflicts and other social skills of participants. In addition, participants in teams take part in initiatives that are to help them develop, among other things, self-organization of work as well as cooperation and communication in a team. Participants are always under the care of a leader - educator, pedagogue or trainer who coordinates regular football3 activities. An additional element that is to influence the motivation to participate in the project is its gamification - “competition” at the team level.

Football3 - one of the tools in the program

Football3 is a modified football, the aim of which is to transfer the emphasis on interpersonal contacts among participants on the field, and not on competition. Due to the adopted form, in the summary of the game the result of the meeting is not limited to the number of goals but what is also takes into account is the compatibility of the game with the rules of fair play and additional points, earned for playing in accordance with the previously adopted rules. There is no referee in the game. The role of the judge is played by a mediator who helps moderate the game and divide the points after its completion.

Stages of the program implementation

The pilot version of the Fair Play program lasted from March to the beginning of August 2018 (the end date is the date of the final tournament in Mragowo). The first stage was the recruitment of 10 to 20 participants of football3 classes by the group leaders. With this group in the period from March to the end of June / early July the leader was conducting regular football3 classes. In the period from the second half of April to June the team carried out the second task - Let’s do something good, and then - organize at least one Fair Play tournament locally. The last stage of the program, about which the participants and leaders did not know before its start, was the departure of five teams that scored best, in August to Mrągowo - for the final tournament of the program.

What did we learn during the evaluation?

In studies including the evaluation of both the

leaders and participants during the narrative

about the components and effects of the program,

the emphasis on social skills is strong. These skills

relate primarily to communication skills: resolving

conflicts, expressing one’s opinion, participa-

ting in a dialogue, building relationships between

participants. Both the participants and the leaders

emphasize, moreover, the increase of competences

related to conflict resolution, developing common

solutions and negotiations as the basic effect of the

program.

The second area, which was mainly addressed

by the leaders, is self-esteem of the participants,

related in their opinion with the possibility of

implementing their own ideas or acceptance in the

group that realized the program. In the analysis of

participants’ declarations, no statistically significant

changes in self-assessment, social competencies

and a sense of support were observed. It should

be noted, however, that the sample was too small

to show such effects. In addition, as noted by one

of the leaders, the effects will come later - and the

results of this evaluation are better perceived as

a prelude to the understanding of the program.

At this pilot stage it was clear that the leaders

themselves evaluate the program’s objectives

differently. Two dominant groups of such goals

can be distinguished. One is to shift the accent of

sports activities to educational values, implemen-

ted through sport. The second is based on the need

to diversify incentives for its participants - and the

Fair Play program, as a stimulus requiring various

activities, works very well. The program really has a

place for fair play - understood as shaping attitudes

on and off the pitch.

What did we learn during the evaluation?

On the basis of the interviews, however, the

impression was that it mainly concerns what is

happening around football3. The base was the time

spent together by the leader with the group and

participants, and the time between the participants

spent with each other. The program allows such

interactions, provides a platform for building

relationships. This occurs, among others, during the

implementation of tasks or meetings related to the

game. An important result of the program, indica-

ted by the participants, especially among the older

youth, is the increase of their agency. Participants

emphasized how, with little adult support, they

made tournaments in their local communities.

The „free hand” for the participants was for many

people a platform for freeing creativity, as well as

taking responsibility for the course of the program

in their group. At this stage, however, it is difficult to

assume further effects of these activities.

Noteworthy is also the activation of the local

community. In many locations the program - and in

particular the tasks involved a large part of the local

community. Such activities were propagation of

knowledge about the tournament in the commune,

the invitation of local schools to host the football3

tournament, and joint collecting of caps.

It seems that the interesting indirect result of

the program is also the promotion of sport, in

particular football, as a sport for girls. The football3

concept responds to the concerns of young women

associated with excessive football aggression.

In conclusion, the Fair Play Program seems to be

a promising, complex intervention that affects both

the specific social skills of young people and their

attitudes towards sport.

Thanks to the program, we often meet, because we like each other - thanks to the activities we spend more time together, we get to know each other more.

In the dialogue zone (while playing football3) it’s cool that you can say what bothers you and listen to others.

The most important effect was the ability to co-operate in a group, its solidarity (...). Here I see the greatest progress made since March. For my group there was no problem that participants were mixed up during the final tournament. My group was open to cooperation.

I was aware that classes (football3) can be re-ceived variously. After the first class, I invited the participants to calmly think about whether we can participate in such a program. The response was positive, that it is something valuable and new to them.

We organized a tournament for children from 5-6th grade in our school and they quickly caught the rules - younger children listened to us as medi-ators without any problem - older ones not neces-sarily.

The program needs stimulus - playing alone is not enough. Participants - young people, quickly get bored, demotivate. They need more stimuli, goals (e.g. a foreign trip) or even gaining gadgets.

These are not typical trainings. If we want a break here, it is a break. We have more to offer. It does not look like the usual training, where you only execute commands (...). Often when someone came to classes and it was clear that something was wrong, we asked. In general, there is a more friendly atmosphere.

It was important for our group that the program was nationwide and we could act on a nationwide scale. The fact that we are here (in Mrągowo - ed.) is widely known in our commune and beyond, our work is appreciated. The Fair Play program is visible on a regular basis and I try to show it.

The tasks were the most interesting - we cleaned the garbage and organized the same tournament for children and men from AMP (Amputee football), we also collected plastic caps. The coach had to leave so we did not have his help, but we succeeded.

I think I will bring up people who will understand what the role of physical activity and sport in life can be. That it does not have to be based on competition, but rather social relations, connected freedom. I want to show them that sport can also be honest...

The difference between PE classes is that here, when we come, we can propose something.

For me it is that when you usually play football, everyone pushes, and when trainer said it would be fair play, I wanted to try.
