ROBERTO ANDÒ

The Empty ThroneIl trono vuoto

A novel that recounts the farse of politics when the party leaders are inexistent and anyone cantake their place

The leader of the main opposion party, Salvatore Olivieri, fifty years old, tired out by the neg-ative opinion polls and by some judiciary problems, decides one day to hook it: he disap-pears without telling anyone (not even his wife or assistant), leaving just a short note of reas-surance. He anonymously travels to Paris, to Danielle, an actress with whom he had had abrief affair twenty years before, but meanwhile, in Italy, his nearest and dearest are trying tofind a solution to the very serious problem that Salvatore’s disappearance has caused theparty. His wife and spokesperson turn to his twin brother, Ernani, a professor of philosophyand ex-psychiatric patient. He’s the only one that could know where Salvatore is. In actualfact, Ernani provides no clues but takes over his absent brother’s position in all naturalness:he gives interviews, holds rallies, presides over meetings – and, obviously, revolutionises theparty’s politicies. But this is not necessarily harmful, on the contrary...

ANGELA BUBBA

A combination of Acciaio and Gomorra, another young talent of Italian fiction denounces herworld – a Southern Italy that could be different if someone talked about it

A market: the one at Rosarno, where a thousand tensions have preceded and “warned” thosewho should have understood and didn’t. A hospital, also in Calabria, where various womenhave been abandoned in the corridor because those responsible for the stretchers had fin-ished their shift. A factory, typical of the industrialisation of the South, full of illegalities andpollution. Crotone, a city that symbolises the whole region of Calabria, lacking in bookshopsand where one of the few booksellers confuses Agota Kristof and Agatha Christie. And finally Rome, where the author studies and where she sees the protests against the con-dition of women in Iran, without thinking of those secret acts of violence and the inferioritydeclared and introjected by so many women in Southern Italy.

Stories about Italy, from a South that is loved and lived, and for this reason – for love –denounced.

PAOLA CAPRIOLO

Cain Caino

As in a piece of crime news, a disappearance, a suicide, a wealthy couple, a poor, devout, immi-grant maid with psychic powers: a mysterious picture to reconstruct in order to find the culprit –if there is one.......

Milagro, an immigrant who works in the house of a very wealthy couple, has disappeared. The Police investigate and, very soon, question her employers. But on arriving at the house, all they find is the body of the owner who has hanged himself for no apparent reason; on thecomputer screen, in the form of a farewell note, is a phrase from Genesis about Cain andAbel. The Police try to reconstruct the incident. They discover that Milagro was a tormentedgirl, afflicted by a sense of guilt for mysterious events that had happened to her that she didnot want to confess to anyone. Her personality had intrigued Max, the man she worked for,a successful marketing director, who had taken her side when his wife criticised her, who hadtalked to her and realized that she talked to herself believing she was talking to someone.Shortly before his wife and son went away on holiday, Max had discovered that Milagro waseven able to levitate – like a saint, or someone possessed. One evening, after following herto a mass where they listened to a sermon about Cain and Abel, which upset her, and hav-ing witnessed Milagro being attacked in a park and done nothing to help her, Max lost it.Then the tragedy: Max kills her, Max’s wife hides the corpse but the next day the man can’tstand the sense of guilt and kills himself.

PIETRANGELO BUTTAFUOCO

In Sicilian tradition the “cunti” were the fairy stories told by the elderly in the evening, withthe children arranged in a circle. Modern interpreter of this tradition, Pietrangelo Buttafuocotells the story of the life of Scipione il Cicalazadé, known in the Orient as Sinan Pascià and inthe West, in his home town of Messina, as the Rinnegato (the Renegade). Captured by thePirates of Dragut at the age of twelve, Scipione is educated at the court of the Sultan, becomes the chosen one and is, therefore, nominated Commander of the Ottoman Armieson sea and land. Midst battles, conquests, booties and glory, Sinan Pascià harbours in hisheart nostalgia for his homeland, and for this reason he returns to the Long Land – Italy – inCalabria and then Sicily. At Palermo, Scipione glimpses the other half of his destiny: a ladymade Moon who engraves on his heart a graft from which love will germinate. But the bat-tle cannot wait: Scipione must hoist the sails and head towards Messina where his brother isready to give the order to fire on him. So it’s battle – a long, crude battle between brothers. But an angry “Hooray!” salutes Scipione’s victory, and so he can make his way back up thesecret heart of Sicily and return, at last, to the arms of the Lady made Moon. And live with herforever: the Wolf and the Moon is a “cunto” but it’s also a true story.

PIETRANGELO BUT TAFUOCO IS A JOURNALIST FOR“PANORAMA”, AND WORKED FOR “IL FOGLIO”.AUTHOR OF FOGLI CONSANGUINEI (AR, 2001), LE UOVA DEL DRAGO (MONDADORI, 2005), L’ULTIMADEL DIAVOLO (MONDADORI, 2008), CABARETVOLTAIRE (BOMPIANI, 2008) AND FIMMINI(MONDADORI, 2009).

IVAN COTRONEO

A psychological thriller that is a vibrant indictment against the fear we all harbour for the Other.

Luca, Laura, Antonio. These are the protagonists of a novel told through three voices, narrat-ing a cruel tale of love, hate and violence. A difficult, introvert sixteen-year-old boy whoarrives in a small town in the provinces. A weary, forty-year-old school mistress, who anx-iously urges her students to face up to life with the courage that she herself is lacking. Ayoung man who has grown up too fast, incapable of relating to others and educated in vio-lence. At the centre, a gun, a shot fired at the temple in a school classroom, and perhaps akiss. One single, simple, kiss, capable of unleashing madness. A psychological thriller, jigsawpuzzle of sentiments, dramatic account of an impossible love, constructed like a time-bombdense with revelations, Un Bacio will conquer readers for the force of the story and a writingstyle capable of touching, moving and disturbing.

ANDREA DE CARLO

Leielui (Sheandhe) is a love story. It takes place during a very hot summer in Milan, Liguria, the South of France and Vancouver, Canada. The “lei” is Clare Moletto, an American who hasbeen living in Italy for some years and works at the call centre of a large insurance company. The “lui” is Daniel Deserti, author of the international bestseller Lo sguardo della lepre andother less successful novels. One day, in the pouring rain, Daniel, who is going through a cre-ative crisis and is completely drunk, drives into the car in which Clare is travelling with herfiancé. The result of this potentially catastrophic incident is the birth of a relationship thatgoes from hostility to diffidence to curiosity to uncontrollable attraction. I wanted to relatethe reasons, doubts and profound contradictions that a man and a woman are faced withwhen they happen to fall in love for real. The challenge was to talk about it as honestly aspossible and give the same importance to both protagonists – the man and the woman. So,in alternating chapters, the story is told from both their viewpoints: the perspective changes,as do the perceptions, the sentiments involved and the questions unresolved. I think that forboth male and female readers it is almost impossible not to relate to one of the two charac-ters, and, in some cases, this may provoke a strange alternation of identification and anger. It happened to me, with “lei” and with “lui”.

LUCA DI FULVIO

The Great Excommunicated Il grande scomunicato

Like a modern fairy tale: in a nowhen time, in a nowhere place, there once lived twenty-fourhalf-wits and the most wicked of dictators, the Great Excommunicated, with an infamous faceand fine head: an erring clergyman of monstrous evil. He is the protagonist of this cleverlyspun tale by Luca Di Fulvio. A human drama that starts off with a clear image: the pure half-wits (twelve couples, men and women in equal number) – live outside the world, in anunknown desert. It’s impossible not to feel affection for the characters of this fairy tale, withtheir expressive names: LaFemmina (TheFemale), Rubezia (Rubicia), Mastro Tagliabue (MasterOxcutter), Luis Veloce (Speedy Louis), Augustin della Battaglia (Augustin of the Battle). Agrotesque portrait and metamorphosis. They all take action, they clash, they join forces – inthe rises and falls of the events of a lifetime in an imaginary (but almost credible) State, as ifin a dream. The life of the Great Excommunicated One, of course. Deus ex machina, alpha andomega, the protagonist you won’t forget and who, like it or not, resembles ourselves a little.

FAUSTA GARAVINI

Diary of SolitudeDiario delle solitudini

The story of a man who finds the strength to face the future in solitude and recollection. The case of a journalist who has lost almost everything for the sake of truth.

A journalist is the victim of a serious accident that leaves him permanently disfigured. Toregain his equilibrium he seeks refuge in a house near a lagoon in total isolation except forthe occasional company of Norberto, the person who brings his supplies. Soon the largehouse he is staying in begins to rouse his curiosity and, from the clues that surround him(paintings, furniture) he reconstructs the life of the inhabitants, scarred by wars andredeemed through art. In particular, he recomposes the lives of Rodolfo and Gualtiero, theformer a businessman, the latter an artist – both protagonists of the most significant eventsof the first half of the 1900s in Italy (the war in Libya, World War I...) and short-lived but pas-sionate love affairs. By reconstructing the lives of his predecessors in the house, the journal-ist also manages to recall his own recent past: the accident, the woman who was with him,the bomb that hit them while they were making a reportage.

MASSIMILIANO GOVERNI

Who Writes DiesChi scrive muore

Gasping, on the brink of a never-ending explosion, day after day, lost in a vortex of hunted-down days and short, decayed breaths, in the gleaming tailspin of speeding cars their doorsslamming, of assaults, prisoner inside anonymous, weightless buildings, so long, so big, per-haps inexistent, dead inside, dead before him. Disillusioned, sad, angry, lacerated, with a com-panion and a daughter, that’s how the writer imagines him. And inexorably caught up in theaffairs of another man, chief escort – Angelo – a talking name, a livid though loyal messen-ger of a world to be both fought and protected, of an intimacy to live from afar and an every-day life inaccessible to the writer. The metres he walks are nothing but the corrupt dust of acondemned man, of a live man already putrified, an eagle with an instinct more in the earththan in the sky. Like Angelo after all, like the ‘Camorristi’ who persecute him, like every othernature and flesh. There’s no hope in life, only in writing. Those who read, that which is read –they are saved; the writer is not. All the rest is a trap, blackmail, persecution.

“400 breathtaking pages: an immense and harsh portrait of contemporary society. […] With extraor-dinary skill, Latronico, a new Dos Passos, successfully portrays the crisis of a civilization, the brutality of finance, the verminous obsession for money, the loneliness of contemporary love.” Il Sole 24 Ore

We struggle as hard as we can to pursue success, wealth, happiness. But what can we do when tal-ent just isn't enough and fair play seems to lead nowhere? How many failures does it take to changea dove into a hawk? The Conspiracy of Doves follows two friends through this transformation. Alfre-do Cannella is heir to a prominent Venetian real estate developer; Donka Berati is an Albanianorphan. Both Harvard dropouts, they are the best in their class at Italy’s leading business university.Alfredo’s family has made a big donation to the university; Donka is there on a scholarship. Yet theybecome close friends, united in their quest to get all they feel that they deserve. Their friendshipgrows out of their mutual successes, but their successes, in turn, start to compromise everythingelse. Donka, a promising scholar, soon lands on the tenure track at a prestigious business school.Alfredo enters his father’s real estate business where, after a string of cunning investments, he bribeshis way to a huge government contract. Alfredo, however, ultimately finds himself on the wrong sideof the deal, while Donka’s academic hopes end abruptly when his professor and mentor passesaway. Still, the pair’s careers proceed, bolstered by ambition and by the reappearance of Drina,Donka’s fiancée at Harvard, and now Alfredo’s. But as the stakes rise, and morally right decisionsdon’t seem to work, their only chances seem to lie in the wrong ones. In his critically acclaimed sec-ond novel, 27-year-old Vincenzo Latronico masterfully summons a cast of human, complex andmorally ambiguous characters, crafting a breathtaking plot around their deep passions – love, envy, ambition – and the justifications they offer for betraying those who trust them.

The Story of My People Storia della mia gente

The story of a broken dream. An Italian epic recalling many American stories.

Once upon a time the Italian Provinces were rich, happy and very productive. They tradedwith foreign countries, were on intimate terms with the Big Ones across the border, and wereproud of having their not only national but communal identity. There was a time when eventhe stupid made money, in a nation where the GNP increased by two figures per year. Wherethe money earned in a carefree, high spirited, even ill-mannered way was openly displayedin luxury goods. Then came the gurus of globalisation saying that things had to change, going on television to sponsor markets in China and claiming that the old model – wherethings were going well – was going badly. This is “the story of my people”, all the people of ahappy and intelligent province, sacrificed in the name of globalisation.

AURELIO PICCA

GoodbyeAddio

The story of a kid from the poor outskirts of Rome who swaps his childhood dreams for the illu-sion of criminal power.

But growing up everythingchanges and things are no longer what they appear to be. Alfredo experiences life in a refor-matory, in a period when reality is changing: on one side a popular, proletarian Rome, whosedaily life is marked by the songs of Don Backy and Caterina Caselli and episodes of crimenews – a life hanging out in bars. On the other, the dream of an America made up of fastmotorbikes and movies but also heinous homicides like that of Sharon Tate. Between thesetwo worlds, Alfredo finds the road to crime more and more imposing, all his dreams are lost.It fills his life.

ALEKSANDR SOKUROV

In the Center of the Ocean

A journey through the most intimate confessions and personal notes on cinema ethics, by one of the contemporary leading film directors.

For the first time the director of Russian Ark, Elegy of a Voyage etc., abandons the cine-cam-era and writes his first book. From the steppes of Chechena to the silent rooms of the Krem-lin and on to the Japanese islands: stories, pages from his diary and reflections on cinema, this book gives us the testimony of an exceptional observer, Alexandr Sokurov, who revealshow he feels in this world and emerges us in the intimacy of his recollections. The bookopens with Alexandra, a tale of the war in Chechena telling of the human desolation of everywar; this story is followed by other short stories that include reflections on history, war andpersonal memories. From this intimate prose the author passes on to the Elegies (whichimmediately recall his cinematographic elegies), followed by a letter to himself entitled MyPlace in Cinema. Nothing ever happens at Nuraiò, an imaginary (but quite realistic) little town in Sardinia. Untilthe murder of Maria Deiana, a pretty, easy-going young schoolteacher with short, red hairand coffee-coloured eyes. When they start investigating, the carabinieri, led by MartinoCrissanti, are already well-informed. On the night of the crime heavy drops are falling on thewindow panes, on the houses and on the tarmac. And in this Sardinia, far from every cliché,it continues to rain on the good people and on the bad – sooner or later they’re all going tohave to pay their dues.

ATTILIO BOLZONI

FAQ Mafia

The questions we all ask about the mafia. The answers of one who can give them with authority: one of the authors of Il capo dei capi.

Much has been written about the Mafia, not to mention the films, the television series andthe plays, from The Godfather to La Piovra (The Leech). And yet its real “truth” continues toescape us: its laws, its rites, its origins, its language and propagating methods. In this volume with the usual, simple, straightforward language of the FAQ series, we lookback over the history of Sicilian Mafia, going on to examine its relations and differences fromthe Calabrian ‘ndrangheta, the Neapolitan Camorra and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia.Mafia and religion, Mafia and politics, Mafia and finance: where are the boundaries of theMafia phenomenon? And who are the Mafiosi? Strange subjects on the verge of bestiality, or “normal” personsmingling among us, unseen, unrecognizable?

ELEONORA DUSE

Letters to Gabriele D’Annunzio

edited by Franca Minnucci

Epistolary New Issue

Eleonora Duse and Gabriele D'Annunzio kept up one of the most harrowing, moving loveaffairs in the history of Italian culture. The actress and the Bard first met in Venice inSeptember 1894 when they were both at the peak of their success. The Bard saw in theactress the person who better than anyone else could have exalted his future theatre andEleonora considered the author an ideal partner for her performances of Shakespeare andIbsen and her entire repertoire. Their love story and intellectual collaboration was to conti-nue until Duse's death in 1924 and, in this book, Franca Minnucci has collected over onethousand three hundred missives that they exchanged showing the totality of an affectionthat lives on through the eternal pages of history and literature. Just as Eleonora was to sayin one of the last messages written to Gabriele:“We'll talk – I'll hold you tight – Will I too tellyou? – there, the last evening or the first? Always. Always.”

Minimum Marketaly. Genesis and Criticism of Absolute CapitalismMinima Mercatalia. Genesi e critica del capitalismo assoluto

The acquisition of self-awareness on behalf of humanity was defined in Hegel’s Phenomenology ofSpirit as a “historical novel”of conscience. What we propose here, in a kind of phenomenology of the“spirit of capitalism”, constitutes instead a “gothic novel” which narrates the process with which the“monster”created by humanity is becoming progessively autonomised until it will be the undisputedmaster:capitalism, today, knows no social resistance (no class hinders it),nor political opposition (right, left and centre share the same ultracapitalistic vision of the world),nor philosophical delegitimisation(apart from rare exceptions, today’s intellectuals are “organic”- in the Gramscian sense – to the systemin force,to which they supply legitimising ideological pictures). Thus it can expand uncontrollably ona global scale, passing itself off as the “end of history”.The postmodern, secularised world in which welive has abandoned the traditional divinities, turning to a blind faith in a new monotheistic divinitythat, like all others, does not accept “competitors”: the monotheism of the market.A brand new visionof the world has arisen, passing itself off as aseptic, secular, neutral and purely economical, but it is infact a highly ideological and religious position because it holds (relegates, according to the originaletymon of religio) all the peoples of the planet to the omnipotence of one sole directive principle ofthe totality of fetishised social relations – the market.

Building the Enemy and Other Occasional Writings Costruire il nemico e altri scritti occasionali

An exposure of the false truths that create ideologies and racism at the service of those in power

Every society and every individual, in order to define himself better, needs an enemy fromwhom to distinguish himself. All the racist regimes – from Nazism to Fascism – have provedit once and for all. They invented a monstrous enemy using intolerable racist arguments.Thepopulist forms of government are still proving it, pursuing consensus by finding enemies inthe immigrants, the Southerners, the homosexuals. Eco starts from this critical, anti-ideologi-cal reflection and continues with a series of ‘occasional’ writings of the most varied topics –those that have always characterised the author’s universe: the system of the media, thepolitical and “perverse” uses of science, little stories of ideas particularly dear to him (theabsolute, fire, lists... ), and small incursions into literature (from Hugo to Anna Karenina) andpopular culture. A journey through the passions, curiosities and obsessions of one of theworld’s most highly esteemed intellectuals, capable of reflecting while enjoying himself and, always, amusing us.

STEFANO LIVADIOTTI

In the Name of God. Sex, Money and Spies. The Enquiry into the VaticanIn nome di Dio. Sesso, soldi e spie. L’inchiesta sul Vaticano

Dangerous friends. Unconfessable affairs. Unofficial agreements with political parties forsharing multi-millionaire priveleges, often on the threshold of illegality. Midst shady, faction-al games, scandals and misdeeds, the Church has become like politics. But even more open-ly rich, unprincipled and arrogant in its demand for immunity for its men, more involved inoutdoing MPs in appearances on talk-shows or in court rather than at the altar. For this, the most recent surveys reveal that the Catholic population throughout the worldhas turned their backs on them. Stefano Livadiotti, author of the best sellers L’altra casta andMagistrati. L’ultracasta, in a ‘shock-enquiry’, reports all the truth about a world of power asgilded as it is hypocritical and corrupt, who doesn’t practice what it preaches. Where whatcounts is fame, money and career, common acts of crime are normal and the most hardenedpaedophiles are lovingly safeguarded.Where, in the shadow of sacred buildings packed withbugs, wheelers, mafiosi and secret agents go about their business. Where stories of weapontrading intertwine with mysterious deaths, charity is an optional, the truth a miracle and sexis made but not talked about. All this with the Pope’s approval? Anyway, in the utmost secre-cy, like any respectable lobby. And always, of course, in the name of God.

GIORDANO BRUNO GUERRI

The Italians under the Church. From St. Peter to BerlusconiGli italiani sotto la Chiesa. Da San Pietro a Berlusconi

The Italians and the Church, Rome and the Pope: a couple that, a bit for love a lot for obliga-tion, have been together for over two thousand years. The Italians owe the Church part oftheir fortune and , perhaps, a greater part of their misfortune: the Church protected themfrom the Barbarians only later to leave them disunited for centuries in the hands of foreignmasters; the Church educated them in Christian values and diseducated them in civil values.Giordano Bruno Guerri looks at this topic as a layman, but has great respect for those whobelieve or have believed (but not for those who pretend or have pretended to believe). And,as a historian, he has brilliantly reconstructed a fascinating affair that from St Peter to Ber-lusconi crosses all the most important crossroads of our history: from the Communes to thestruggles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, from the Renaissance to the Counter-Reformation, from the Decadence to the 17th and 18th centuries of the Italian Unification,up until the Second Republic. One after the other we discover the origins of many Italianevents and behaviours, even the most up-to-date, that one would consider far-removedfrom religion. BENITO MUSSOLINI

Mussolini’s Diaries – 1936 vol. 3

(presumed)

The inheritance of a recently deceased ex-partisan who had participated in Mussolini’s arrestreveals a clamorous discovery: six notebooks each of three hundred pages, attributable tothe Duce and bearing a precious autographic testimony of the years from 1935 to 1942.Thus begins one of the most enthralling editorial events of recent years, rotating around the“Diaries of Mussolini”. The scientific community and the press are divided as regards theauthenticity of the writings, with illustrious supporters for and against. If the attribution of the diaries is still under debate, certain is their value and historical andartistic interest. An unpublished document recounting what took place behind the scenesduring the years that marked Italy’s modern history. The first volume is dedicated to 1939,the year of the German invasion of Poland, the spark that triggered off World War II: relationswith Hitler, vitriolic comments on the Fascist hierarchy – a day-by-day diary describing thepersonality of a statesman, his errors and weaknesses, through a text of great intensity.

UMBERTO PASTI

Gardens and Non-Gardens Giardini e no

Drawings by Pierre Le Tan

A manual of Botanic Resistance.Vices and virtues of the Italians through the gardens they cultivate .

This book is a personal, ironic manifesto of botanic resistance that, starting from the contro-versy over the gardens in fashion today, offers a cross section of our society. The author takes into consideration the gardens of fanatic collectors obsessed by the rarityand peculiarity of the species to such an extent as to forget to draw pleasure from the aspectand perfume of the flowers; the gardens of the well-to-do ladies, spoilt by an asphyxial, mechanical creativity – lacquered and fake; the billionaire gardens, status symbols showingoff their wealth, one of the maximum examples of non-garden since the owners have not acrumb of passion, relying entirely on professionals so-called garden designers; the Moorishgardens having replaced the Japanese ones in the western exoticist trend...Fortunately, in this valley of horrors, there also are some pleasant surprises like the gardensof the petrol stations – those wild and unpredictable flower beds fertilised by pollution, thatfor some bizarre twist of nature give life to surprising, touching creations.

ROSSANA ROSSANDA

VisioniVisions. Conversation with Mariuccia Ciotta and Roberto Silvestri

The last century girl, talking about cinema and political commitment

The “last century girl” in the darkened cinema. The thoughts, emotions and battles of a spe-cial spectator – Rossana Rossanda – face to face with the critics of the daily newspaper“Manifesto”.When the “Manifesto”was only about politics, in its early days, the early seventies,Rossanda was the first to fight for adding cultural pages, including cinema, to the paper. Shereviewed hundreds of films, her approach to cinema always being a moment for reflectionand militant criticism, rarely mere escapism. Visioni is a conversation on cinema and politicsfrom 1900 to today. It looks at the revolution of form and the forms of revolution from theRussian screen to Hollywood, from the avantgarde to classic cinema, to digital.

UMBERTO ECO

The Infinity of ListVertigine della lista

In the history of western culture the taste for accumulation often recurs: lists of saints, for-mations of soldiers, catalogues of monstrous beings or medicinal plants, hoards of treasures,up to the parades of the 1900s, from music hall to fashion. The vertigo of the list is neitherinnocent nor casual. A culture prefers enclosed, stable forms when certain of its own cultur-al identity, while it makes lists when faced with a disorderly series of phenomena in need ofcriteria. The poetics of the catalogue therefore runs through the whole history of art and lit-erature; it is not only at work in the files of the legendary animals of the antique bestiaries, orin the celestial host of angels and those infernal of devils. We find it more transversely fromHomer to Joyce, from the treasures of the Gothic cathedrals to Bosch’s oneiric landscapes, upto the 20th century with Andy Warhol or Arman. In this book Umberto Eco reflects on how theidea of catalogue has changed over the centuries and how, from one period to the next, itexpressed the spirit of its time. Alongside his essay, a literary anthology and an ample selec-tion of works of art to illustrate and develop the presented texts.

Beauty and Ugliness are mutable, cultural attributes relative to the period and the society. What was beautifu or ugly in Ancient Greece probably did not correspond to what was con-sidered so in those same times in the Arab world, just as what the Middle Ages consideredmonstrous became seductive in certain epochs of our same culture. History of Beauty andHistory of Ugliness also look back over all Western culture (literature, philosophy, iconogra-phy), identifying the declinations of aesthetic, conceptual categories which never represent-ed absolute and changeless valves.

The Camera picta, better known as the Camera degli sposi, by Andrea Mantegna in Castello SanGiorgio, Mantua, has fascinated millions of spectators, travellers and sightseers and has accompa-nied generations of Mantuans. In the light of the critical observations by Rodolfo Signorini, a well-known Mantuan scholar, two leading interpreters of world art, Giovanni Reale and Vittorio Sgarbi, tackle the miracle of Mantegna’s art, recovering story-lines of ancient inspirations (Luciano diSamosata) and coeval contaminations (Leon Battista Alberti) in an unprecedented dialoguebetween hermeneutics and art criticism, research into the sources and a mystery as yet unresolved. How could Andrea Mantegna portray at the very moment a particular event occurred (the com-munication of the election of Francesco Gonzaga to the cardinal throne) a whole pack of men whofrom the fifteenth century to today can still miraculously be seen on the streets of Mantua? Whatpact with eternity did the painter make when he set those everlasting faces, expressions and gri-maces on that wall? A map in which the visions of art and the landscapes of the soul are interwoven, overcoming the distance between things and places.

CESARE BRANDI

Travels and Literary WorksViaggi e scritti letterari

Edited by Vittorio Rubiu Brandi

“In the book you can find the same brilliant and elegant aura of the countless conversationsaround the table. His curiosity led him to explore especially the ancient civilizations.”Alberto Arbasino

A unique opportunity to rediscover one of the most original and vigorous figures of 20th cen-tury Italian culture: Cesare Brandi. Art historian, essayist, philosopher, restoration theorist, butalso a writer in the purest, truest sense, Brandi (Siena 1906-Rome 1988) is herein presentedabove all as a great, authentic story-teller of things, places and people, a tireless travel racon-teur. Ancient Greece, the source of the Nile, the deserts of the Middle-East, the secrets of “HolyRussia”, Buddha’s lands, the legendary Persia, the great wall of China, the thousand faces ofpeasant and metropolitan Italy. All these are the stages of a long exterior journey counter-bal-anced by another, intimate journey that, in the subsequent sections – that of his autobio-graphical and literary writings – make us discovering a Brandi who is the interpreter and thefriend of great international artists such as Guttuso, De Pisis, Klee, Morandi, Picasso, Matisse.Brandi’s look – with his exceptional language virtuosity, is conjured up in this book in all itscomplexity and richness. FERNANDA PIVANO

Diaries, vol.I 1917/1973, vol.II 1974/2009 Diari 1917/1973, 1974/200

Edited by Enrico Rotelli with Mariarosa Bricchi

A “live” classic that is an homage to Fernanda Pivano’s writing, talent, and vitality sharper than ever .

When Fernanda Pivano first went to the USA, in the fifties, she was a young student in lovewith the America of those times, with a strong desire to meet face to face the masters of fic-tion who were just beginning to be known in Italy thanks to Cesare Pavese and Elio Vittorini. She immediately discovered a world of dreams, ideals and values that she would never gettired of celebrating: from the pacificism of Norman Mailer – acknowledged master of Amer-ican fiction, both loved and hated by the Beat Generation of the sixties, who drew his anti-imperialism from him – to the example of an inexhaustible thirst for novelty and authentici-ty that was the living myth, Ernest Hemingway. From the beat generation gurus (Ginsberg,Kerouac, Corso, Ferlinghetti, men who – in the name of an idea to return to the essentialityof Man, and clashing with the prejudices of capitalistic consumerism, lived and wrote with-out distinguishing art from life) to Don DeLillo and the minimalists. In short, a new Americanjourney, among the contradictions and secret hopes of that great, glorified and feared nationthat is, and always has been, America.

ANTONIO PIZZUTO

Dolls Repaired HereSi riparano bambole

Profi’s life is at the centre of the most exemplary novel by Antonio Pizzuto. Si riparano bam-bole is the story of a life told in fragments, frames of biographical epics from childhood tosenility, edited like movie sequences: from the richness of the early years to the poverty ofthe final ones, from childhood curiosity to old age resignation. Despite the dry, unembell-ished plot, this book is a powerful work: from a single, overwhelming memory, it develops adense and composed continuum caught before his inexorable fading-out.

ANTONIO PIZZUTO (1893-1976) GRADUATED

IN LAW AND PHILOSOPHY AT UNIVERSITY OF

PALERMO AND PURSUED HIS CAREER IN PUBLIC

ADMINISTRATION: FIRST AS DEPUTY CHIEF OF POLICE

IN TRENTO, THEN AS CHIEF OF POLICE IN BOLZANO

AND AREZZO. HIS CAREER AS AN AUTHOR BEGAN

ONLY IN 1950, WHEN HE RETIRED AND MOVED TO

ROME, WHERE HE DEDICATED HIMSELF EXCLUSIVELY TO

WRITING. THE MAIN FEATURE OF HIS WORK IS THE

NOTABLY AT TENTION TO LANGUAGE AND NEOLOGISMS

HE CONSTANTLY INTRODUCED IN HIS WRITING.PIZZUTO WAS A CLOSE FRIEND OF THE LITERARY

CRITIC GIANFRANCO CONTINI, WHO CONSIDERED

HIM ONE OF THE LEADING ITALIAN WRITERS OF THE

GIOVANNI TESTORI

Works, vol. I, II, IIIOpere, vol. I, II, III

Edited by Fulvio Panzeri. With a preface by Giovanni Raboni

vol. I (1943-1961) The first volume of the Works by Giovanni Testori, edited by Fulvio Panzeri, with a preface by Gio-vanni Raboni, contains the Lombardy writer’s most well-known narrative and theatrical works. From his first dramatic works (La morte. Un quadro and Tentazione nel convento) to the master-pieces of his maturity (La Maria Brasca and L’Arialda); from the classic tales Dio di Roserio, Pontedella Ghisolfa and Gilda del Mac Mahon to the novels Il fabbricone and Nebbia al Giambellino.

vol. II (1965-1977)The second volume, instead, is a collection of the author’s major poetic texts, from I Trionfi to Neltuo sangue, and a precious review of compositions almost impossible to find nowadays, such as“For You, Alain”, together with some unpublished works like the two Suites for Francis Bacon…The collection will also include the novels La Cattedrale and Passio Laetitiae et Felicitatis, whereTestori experiments an innovative disintegration of the traditional narrative forms, giving mas-terly proof of his linguistic exceptionality, and famous theatrical texts such as the Trilogia degliScarozzanti, where educated speech is skilfully blended and harmonised with grotesque, popu-lar deformations. The book, edited by Fulvio Panzeri (as vol. I), is prefaced by Giovanni Raboni.

vol. III (1978-1993)The third volume is devoted to the period going from 1978 to 1993, and collects all his pro-duction of the Eighties. The main surprise of the volume is the unpublished poems, aboveall the "familiar" one, or the ones taken by magazines or art catalogues, as well as the publi-cation of the two "Brianciatrilogie" and the second version of the Erodiade.
