ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGN

Congratulations and a big thank you toeveryone who produces and delivers WOT!Twenty years is a considerable achievement.

We had our first Bric-a -Brae stall at the CrowPie Carnival this year, and enjoyed it so muchwe'd like to make it an annual event. It enabledour campaign to be seen by more Ratbyresidents and helped us to spread the anti-littermessage more clearly too. Also it gave peoplethe chance to see many of the posters schoolchildren had designed for us, and receive theirAnti-Litter sticker from Chris.

Please save your unwanted items for us, andlook out for our stall next time.

level 6 or above, with a record number ofstudents going up 3 National Curriculum levelswhile at Brookvale.

Students at the Language College didexceptionally well in Languages at a time whennationally there has been a marked decline inthe number of students studying a languagebeyond the age of 14.The Community College already hasInternational Schools status and Brookvale is

working towards this award. This means thatthe mission statement of the two schools, "Toopen minds and doors through LanguageLearning" is represented across all areas of thecurriculum with a huge focus on helpingyoungsters to gain a real understanding ofpeople from other cultures, races and beliefs. In this way Groby secondary schools hope todevelop young people who are truly globalcitizens and who can take their place in theworld of the future where values such as

tolerance and respect for others play a part inaddressing some of the many problems facingsocieties today.

Many ex-students of Groby schools are alreadyworking in exciting careers using theirlanguage skills. It should be remembered thatlanguage graduates are among the mostsuccessful at obtaining employment afterleaving University waiting on average half thetime to find permanent opportunities than thattaken by graduates in many other morepopular degree courses.

RATBY SCHOOL CHILDREN ARE COOL!

Summer may now seem like a distantmemory, but in June this year the children ofRatby Primary School received a welcomeaddition to their playground. Funds raisedby the Parent Staff Association were used topurchase a playground shade sail from Keepit Kool Shade Sails Ltd.

The supporting poles were concreted in toplace and, for a while, curious passers bymust have wondered what this strangestructure was going to be. Shortlyafterwards the sail was fitted and it looksfantastic - providing a much-needed area forthe children to cool off and protect them fromthe sun during playtime.

If you would like to get involved with the P.S.A.and their other fundraising projects, pleasecontact the school who can put you in touchwith Committee members. They're a friendlybunch and you would be made very welcome

News from St Philip and St James

As a new school term begins, at St PJ's westart a new set of All Age Worship services onthe first Sunday of each month. We've startedby thinking about choices and the differentsituations we come across, whatever our age, where we have to make a choice. We looked atthe story of two men who wanted to build ahouse. One took the easy route, wantingeverything quickly and so built his house onsand which was easy to work. The other tookhis time and built his house on a foundation ofrock which was hard work. When the badweather came along, cheap and cheerful tookits toll whereas hard work paid off. DuringOctober we'll be celebrating Harvest at 10amon Sunday and on Sunday 29^^ at 6.30pmour young and (not so) older people will begiving a performance in song of the story ofDavid and Goliath. There's a seat here for youto use - we'd be glad to see you.

RATBY BADMINTON CLUB

Following the construction of the new Hall atRatby Primary School in 1974, the thenHeadmaster, Mr Ballard suggested that thenew facility could be used by the staff in theevenings, and Badminton was one of the ideasfor its use.

Several of the teachers, including Mrs JanKirkham and Mrs Brenda Derbyshire, togetherwith spouses and some parents formed a Club, and contributed towards the hire charges andcosts of shuttles etc. Badminton was notplayed competitively as the hall was too shortfor a full sized court. In due course the Clubmoved to larger two-court facilities at BosworthCollege, Desford, in 1991.Brenda Derbyshire became the treasurer, withhusband Roy as secretary, positions held for15 years, until their recent retirement. The Club has a friendly atmosphere, playssocial badminton, but does not play in anyleague competitions. It meets on Mondayevenings from September to Easter, except onodd occasions when the hall is required forCollege purposes. The Club has vacancies for new members.Experience is not essential, and beginners arewelcome. It is envisaged that if the Club gets agood response a Junior Section will be startedwith coaching for those interested. If there areyoung people interested in joining existingmembers will help with transport if required. For information ring;Mr Ian Vernon, Secretary 239 5387Mrs Lorraine Turner, Treasurer 238 7479.

THE METHODIST CHURCH

CHAPEL ANNIVERSARY,SUNDAY OCTOBER 29*'̂

SERVICES will be held at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.With guest preacher Rev. Trevor Grewcock.

Our anniversary celebrates the opening of thepresent chapel in October 1911. The building, together with its granite boundary wall was builton a plot previously used as an allotment. The building was erected between April andOctober by Ratby Builder B Shipman andSons, forebears of the present-day Shipmanfamily, at a cost of £1,398-13s-6d.We are delighted, (and a little bit proud) to bewelcoming back to his roots an old Ratby lad tobe our guest Preacher.Born in a little cottage in Church Lane, Trevorgained his first insight into Methodism withinour own Sunday School. Many older villagers will remember Trev. Invarious ways. Some as a village school kid, others as a butcher's lad, working for MrFreeman, the village butcher of the time andothers as a euphonium player in the old 'RatbySilver Prize Band.'

Eventually Trevor was persuaded towards theMinistry, was ordained, and has since servedthe Methodist Church in various parts of thecountry. He has recently retired. We offer a special invitation to anyone whoremembers Trevor to renew that acquaintanceat one of our services on the 29*^. We knowthat he and we would be very pleased to seeyou. f God Bless, j,

Dear Wot,I hope you remember me - you kindlypublished an article in April WOT about my trekin the foothills of the Himalayas on behalf ofHelp the Aged.Help the Aged do really good work in India as I

In addition our Help the Aged trek group visitedthe project 'Adopt a Grandma'. We, asambassadors of Help the Aged, were greetedby the old ladies and one old man who gave useach a rose and more thank you's thanwe could manage. Please pass on a thank you to the regulars ofThe Railway Pub especially the landlord - theycollected £18.65.

I won't be doing any more treks but I can stilldo the odd bit of collecting. I thought it mightbe a good idea to have a coffee and cakemorning somewhere!

Julie, who was our trek organiser, has sent medetails of the next two treks, which I attach. Ifyou have space to print this information pleasedo. The more trekkers the better.
