Iwillcontinuetohonoryouasmymother,butIcannotfulfillyourneedsinanyarea.Wecanacknowledgethiswithoutgoingtotheextremeofatotallycut-offrelationship.Isuggesttoyouthatifyoufindourrelationshipverypainful,thenyourexpectationsfromitarenotproper.IhadaskedthatwemayhavearightrelationshipasamothertosonbeforetheLord.PleaserecognizethatasagrownmanImustfollowthecalltobeaman;nolongertiedtohismother.ImustfollowtheBiblicalcommandtoleavemyparents’homeandtocleavetomywife,andpleasedon’tuseemotionalmanipulationtechniquesonmeinthefuture,forIamplanningtoresistitfromnowon.Thisletterisfromme—notfrommywife.IplantoletBettyreaditbeforeIsendit,butonlyyouandIcanbeaccountableforourrelationship.Bettyisneitherthecausenorthesolutiontoourrelationalproblems,andsheneverhasbeen,althoughinthepastyouhaveblamedherasthecause.Thiswillnodoubtbeaslow-movingstruggle,butit’stimetoworkonanewkindofrelationshipbetweenus.IloveyouandIawaityourreply.”
