"Australia's LEGENDAIRY Capital 2015"
November, 2016
Huge Weekend For Stanhope Hundreds of visitors came to Stanhope during the weekend 14th, 15th & 16th October,
to celebrate the centenary of the Stanhope school. The celebrations commenced on Friday with the local school children, their parents and friends, launching one hundred balloons to celebrate the one hundred years life of the school. Many visiting former students and staff inspected the school during the afternoon, along with all of its modern facilities. Saturday was the main day of celebrations, with more than 300 people attending the school to inspect the facilities, together with photos of students from years gone by, but most importantly, to catch up with former friends and mates from their school days, some more recent, but most from many years ago. There were lots of memories revived and stories told of years gone by, mostly true, but some a little exaggerated. The afternoon concluded with photos being taken of groups of former students, representing the ten decades of the school.
Following such a successful day, the dinner in the Stanhope Community Hall was just as successful, with more than one hundred in attendance. Once again stories from the past were related by some of the very senior students, including Mr David Bell, the oldest living former student, now in his mid nineties. The members of the organising committee were ecstatic with the highly successful weekend.

Streetscape Update Last month the Shire of Campaspe installed new bins, bike racks and seating in Birdwood Avenue, as part of the Stanhope, stage 3 streetscape upgrade. The Planning Group would like to mosaic the round planter boxes to add more colour in the main street. If anyone has any old tiles they would like to donate for this project, please drop them into the Stanhope Business Centre. If you would like to help out with this project, please contact Lyn Emmett on 0457 572629. Lyn will be arranging a working bee in the near future.

I’ve Been Set Free
Yep – I’m out on parole. After almost four months in solitary confinement, I’ve been let loose.
I’ve been told if I don’t behave myself I’ll be back in the lockup again. I haven’t really enjoyed the past few months,. Although I have been well looked after, it’s not the same as being on the loose. So, to celebrate, I noticed a group of people at the old fire station, so I thought I should go and see what was going on. I soon found out they were trying to sell the place, but it didn’t really happen, cos there were no bids, as no one seemed interested. I was trying to bid, I was nodding my head up and down, which is what you are supposed to do I’m told, but they just didn’t take any notice of me. Anyhow, I’m told they wanted almost $100,000 for it and that’s miles too much, after all this is Stanhope and values are not very high here. I don’t know what you could use it for, but I thought it would make a great aviary for me and all my mates. That’s of course, as long as the doors were left open.
I’m back

After a wet winter and early spring, Stanhope is gradually drying out, as only 37 mls fell during October, which is below the average of 42 mls. The driest October on record was in 2007 when Stanhope received only 4.4mls. The wettest was in 1949 when Stanhope received 177mls of rain.

Hightower and Mandi would like to take this opportunity to introduce themselves as the new licensees of The Stanhope Pub Their first day of trading was on Tuesday November 1st, yes Melbourne Cup Day. Between them they have 3 kids who you will see running around – Jake 11, Matilda 9 and Billy. They are hoping to become part of the community and support local clubs as much as possible. They have been lucky enough to have Darren in the kitchen as their chef and the fabulous Ronnie running the show. They have been rolling out the new menu this past week with some great feedback so far – call 5857 2293 for bookings. Chef Darren moved to Stanhope earlier this year from Penola, SA where he ran his own restaurant. He has been a chef for 37 years and has worked in various restaurants around Melbourne including many inner city pubs. He also worked overseas in Wales, USA and New Zealand. Darren also trained with some well known Chef’s – Iain Hewitson, George Calombaris, Joe Hlusko, and Matt Wormsley. Over the next few months you will notice some changes around the place. Don't stress they’re not there to change the world, just need to freshen it up a bit. They are open to suggestions, so if there is something you would like to see, don’t be shy to tell them. Don't forget they have a courtesy bus, so give them a bell if you would like a pick up phone: 5857 2293.

Where to next? THE STANHOPE & DISTRICT PLANNING GROUP
WILL BE HOLDING A PUBLIC MEETING
At the STANHOPE HOTEL Monday 28th November
From 7.30pm – 9.30pm We want to hear from you:
Review of the last plan How can we make
Stanhope even better? - Supper provided.
What is the Stanhope & District Community Plan
The Stanhope & District Plan represents the priority projects identified at the public annual District Plan Review meeting to enhance the quality of life in Stanhope. These priorities are to be determined through a public process which includes cooperation between local groups, community surveys and ultimately a public meeting. Our last meeting was held on in July 2009. The aim of District Planning in this process is to ensure as many people as possible are involved and support the outcomes identified in the Stanhope District Plan. The Campaspe Shire Council commenced the District Planning program to increase resident input through their local District Plans, in order to shape the individual needs of each district. At the centre of District Planning is the opportunity to build partnerships between local groups and residents for each initiative that increase community participation and continuously improve community opportunity and services. The District Plan will be most effectively delivered through cooperation and partnerships. By undertaking components of this District Plan, it prepares the Stanhope community to seek access to program funding. It also enables potential resource providers to acknowledge that the District Plan represents a combined direction.
T20 kids have a Blast Sunday, 23 October 2016 saw the first game of T20 Blast Cricket for a group of 10 kids representing the Stanhope Cricket Club. The kids had a great morning participating in a game of modified cricket against the Rochester United Cricket Club and also enjoyed a skills session with accredited coaches. The program runs every Sunday morning until Christmas, rotating around Goulburn Murray Cricket grounds.

Our Pool is set to Open!! With the weather starting to warm up it can only mean that Pool Season is fast approaching and we are pleased to inform you all that an OPENING date has been set for our pool on SATURDAY, 12th NOVEMBER at 2.30pm. Our “Season Opening” will be a low key affair due to the uncertainty of the weather, however we will still provide the community with an afternoon of swimming and socialising with a BBQ provided (at a small cost) and Pool Memberships available for purchase on the day. (If you are stuck for an idea for the children or grandchildren for Christmas why not buy them a Season Pool Pass or purchase Swimming Lessons, they make great gifts and are value for money). We can ensure you that many exciting events are planned for later on in the season when the weather has warmed up, such as our “Welcome to Summer” Pool Party scheduled for Friday, 2nd December. Make sure to write this event on your calendars and we will provide more details closer to the date. To make these events successful, we need to have as much support from the Stanhope Community as possible.
We are also very excited to announce that the Shire has agreed to change the Opening hours of our Stanhope Pool to accommodate the needs of our Community. We are hopeful that with these new hours the pool attendance figures will increase, reflecting a better outlook for the Shire. The NEW hours are as follows;
*Closing Hours may be extended in line with the temperature dependant on operating procedures. On another positive note, the council has also agreed to let the Pool Group/Community run the Pool Kiosk providing the regulations set out by the Shire are followed correctly. We will be seeking help from members of the community to volunteer on a roster system to ensure our Kiosk is always staffed and well stocked with a variety of affordable products, which will also allow the pool to make a small profit. A “Learn to Swim” Program will be available in the January 2017 School Holidays for the Children of the community.
Dates: Monday, 9th January – Friday, 13th January 2017. Cost: $70.00 per child.
Age: 4 years and above. The Program: 30 minute session each day for 5 days.
Closing date for Enrolments: Thursday, 5th January 2017. All Teachers are AUSTSWIM qualified. Enrolment forms are available from Jason Keegan and the Stanhope Pool Kiosk, or for further information please contact the Echuca War Memorial Centre on 5480 2994. These are just a few exciting things planned for the 2016/17 Stanhope Pool Season, and they would not be happening without the efforts of a small group of dedicated locals who have been working together with the Shire of Campaspe to ensure our Pool stays open. This group of concerned locals came together months ago, after the Shire had threatened to close our pool. All members of this group are very enthusiastic and determined to ensure our Swimming Pool stays open to provide a safe and enjoyable place for the Stanhope Community to enjoy during summer. The group has officially been named the “Stanhope Community Aquatic Centre Incorporation” and is made up of the following volunteers; President - Jason Keegan (mobile: 0417 213 482) - Treasurer - Stephen Browne - Secretary - Michelle Ponton - Sponsorships / Fundraising - Maree Harrison - Kiosk Manager - Kass Armstrong - General Committee Members – Kellie Bamford, Pauline Keegan, Kym Patten & Judy West. Please feel free to approach any members of the group and raise any concerns or ideas you may have regarding our pool and we can work together on achieving a positive outcome. We will ensure the community is kept up to date with any news or events happening at the pool through our Facebook Page - “Stanhope Pool” and the “Stanhope Victoria” Facebook Page, the monthly issue of the “About Town”, posters in shop windows, information in the school newsletter and the local newspapers. Whilst the Pool Group have been working hard behind the scenes arranging and attending meetings, making phone calls, gathering information etc to ensure our pool stays open, we need the support from the Stanhope Community as a whole. With the new longer opening hours and events planned we hope to see a rise in our attendance figures, but we will also need financial support which we will be seeking from our local businesses, clubs and organisations. We are currently in the process of finalising our sponsorship packages and will be contacting businesses to discuss in further detail. We are very confident that by working together as a community we can save our pool.

Stanhope & District Community Emergency Response Team
AGM Tuesday, 15th November 7.30pm Stanhope Business Centre - All Welcome -
CERT - 5 Years On In October this year, the Stanhope CERT celebrated 5 years since training began to become the team we are today. CERT is auspiced by Ambulance Victoria to help the ambulance improve their response times, in selected areas without an ambulance service in the town. CERT is staffed completely by dedicated volunteers who give their time to help their community. CERT cannot function without the generosity of people giving some time out of their busy lives to help the community. We need some NEW MEMBERS who have a little or a lot of time to give their community. There is no set commitment that people need to make, it's quite flexible, to help fit around your other commitments. The only special skills required to be a CERT member is being able to work cooperatively in a team environment and a will ingness to help your community. A current Drivers Licence is required. All training is provided FREE OF CHARGE by Ambulance Victoria, who also provide ongoing funding for the equipment needed to run the team. The training is a combination of on-line training and face to face sessions. Our current CERT members have backgrounds in agricultural work, horticulture, childcare, hospitality, massage therapy, nursing and other health care professions. If we can do it, so can you. If you want to know more, call Pauline Keegan on 0414 495 311 or catch me down the street. We need some new members to keep the team going strong.
Stanhope Art Space and new Toilets finally open
Mr Alec Nelson, Mrs Cynthia Downing and Mr David Bell cut the ribbon to
officially open the new facility. At a very well attended ceremony, some eighty local Stanhope residents witnessed the opening of the new Art Space and Toilet Block on Saturday, 15th October. Following some ten years of frustration, the Stanhope Planning group, along with the members of the Art Space and Toilet Block sub committee, were extremely pleased to invite Stanhope’s three eldest, original citizens, Mrs Cynthia Downing, Mr Alec Nelson and Mr David Bell to cut the ribbon to officially open the facility. The Mayor of the Shire of Campaspe, Cr Leigh Wilson congratulated the committees on their successful endeavours after such a long time. In particular he congratulated Lyn Emmett for her untiring efforts to achieve this project for Stanhope. In reply, Lyn gave a comprehensive report of the problems the committees faced during the long and drawn out negotiations between VicTrack and the Shire of Campaspe Council. However she said the battle was well worth it, to at last see the facility open. She said the Stanhope community should be proud of this facility, which she said will attract more visitors to the town. She thanked the committee and in particular Neville Cowie for his staunch support and assistance.
