MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTAUSTRALIAN SOCCER FEDERATION

SIR ARTHUR GEORGE

I am delighted, once again, to have this opportunity of expressing the sincereappreciation of the Australian Soccer Federation to Coca-Cola Bottlers through-out Australia for making the finance available to conduct this third AustralianYouth Championship.

Since FIFA introduced the World Youth Tournament for the Coca-Cola Cupthis National Youth Championship has taken on added significance. From lastyear's Championship a squad of players was selected which formed the nucleusof the Young Socceroos who travelled to New Zealand and to South Americato contest the 1979 FIFA competition.

The Team was very successful in New Zealand, and also performed extremelywell in South America notwithstanding the fact that they did not win theTournament. Eventual winners Paraguay, one of the best teams in South America, will come very close to taking out the World Titles in the Finals which will beheld in Japan in late August and early September of this year.

From these Championships National Coach, Rudi Gutendorf. will be selectingplayers who will play two matches in August of this year against the YugoslavTeam which will be stopping in Australia en route to Japan to contest the WorldChampionship Finals.

Also, players will be chosen in a squad which will be prepared over the next twoyears to participate in the Final Competition of the World Youth Championshipwhich will be played in Australia in 1981.

There is no doubt that the participation of the Coca-Cola Company and the-Australian Bottlers in the game of soccer has already been tremendously beneficialto the game in this country. We should all be extremely grateful for the assistancethat we are receiving.

I take this opportunity of thanking the Board of Management and officials, andthe Secretary and his staff of the Victorian Soccer Federation for staging this veryimportant event, and I wish all those competing a very enjoyable and successfulweek of soccer. May the best team emerge as winners of the Coca-Cola BottlersCup.

ARTHUR GEORGE

11~lr- THE 1979 FIFA WORLD YOUTH TOURNAMENTr FOR THE COCA-COLA CUP

When FIF A President, J oao Havelange conceived the idea for this Tournament, thanks tothe generous sponsorship of The Coca-Cola Company, he opened up a new era for YouthFootball in Australia.

The year 1977 saw the introduction of the Coca-Cola Bottlers National Under 18 Cham-pionship. The event catered for players under the age of 19 in 1978 and in future theevent will be known as the Coca-Cola Bottlers Australian Youth Championship.

The new name of this event enables the Federation to vary the age qualification ofplayers in line with qualification requirements of the FIF A World Youth Tournamentconditions.

The first World Youth Tournament was played in Tunisia in 1977 and was won by theU.S.S.R. Team on penalty kicks from Mexico. Australia was precluded from partici-pating in the competition because the Oceania Football Confederation had not conducteda Youth Tournament of its own in order to find a qualifier.

In September, 1978, the Federation engaged the services of Rudi Gutendorf as NationalTeam Coach. An entry had already been submitted in the 1979 FIF A World YouthTournament and Australia was grouped with New Zealand, Papua New Guinea andRepublic of China (Taiwan). The Republic of China subsequently withdrew due to thenon-availability of entry visas for New Zealand.Rudi Gutendorf had very little opportunity to prepare his squad as the matches wereplayed in early November. Training camps were conducted at the Bill Englefield Stadiumin Sydney with some forty or more players taking part. The squad was reduced to thefollowing eighteen players who travelled to Auckland, New Zealand, on 9th November,1978.

- .The Coca-Cola Export Corporation sponsored the visit to New Zealand providing Teamand officials' uniforms and a wide variety of aids not the least of which was copiousquantities of Coke, Fanta and Leed. Team strips, tracksuits and walk-out suits wereprovided by Umbro International (Australia) Pty. Ltd.Following the New Zealand success preparation commenced for the Second PreliminaryRound to be played somewhere in South America. It had been hoped that these matcheswould not take place until April, 1979, in Argentina. However, FIF A insisted that theybe played in February, the eventual venue being Paraguay. There was little time for preparation but a concentrated effort was made. The Teamplayed against Hertha 03 Berlin and the Federation is very thankful to all concernedfor their valued co-operation.The final squad of eighteen players and officials travelled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, departing Sydney on 27th January, 1979, to complete final preparation and await adecision on the venue for the Tournament and Australia's opponent to join Israel.
