FROM THE EDITOR

A new tennis season is accompanied by inevitable questions –

particularly when it comes to the world’s top players. While Roger

Federer showcased a legendary longevity to wrestle the world

No.1 ranking from Novak Djokovic mid-2012, the Serb responded with

trademark resilience to regain control by season’s end. That superpower

battle provides a tantalising sub-plot to the Australian Open.

So too does the recent resurgence of Serena Williams, a winner of

two of the four Grand Slams plus Olympic gold medals and the WTA

Championships in 2012, and yet not the season-ending No.1 ranking.

Serena insists she’s unfussed by top spot, yet you can be certain she’ll

embrace the possibility of reclaiming it from Victoria Azarenka should

she claim a 16th major title in Melbourne.

Equally fascinating questions surround other credentialed

contenders: Can Andy Murray follow his long-awaited Grand Slam

with more majors? How will Rafael Nadal fare in his injury comeback?

What man, if any, can infiltrate the ‘big four’? Will Maria Sharapova

maintain major momentum?

Much of the Australian focus, of course, is on the local contenders. Is

Sam Stosur set to achieve the highs many expected of her in 2012? Will

Lleyton Hewitt, contesting a record 17th consecutive Australian Open in

2013, continue his stunning comeback? How will Bernard Tomic respond

to current pressures? And who will reveal themselves as the next

generation of Australian players to watch?

Interwoven in such questions are the more complex considerations

that may shape the game for years to come. Injury management, the

rankings system and whether the intricate discussions around player

prize money will lead to further changes to name a few.

For now, though, all eyes are on the Australian summer of tennis and

if posing the questions proves interesting, discovering the answers is

bound to be thrilling.
