S tan P h i l l i p s was dependable i n the back l ine and i t was p leas ing to see h i m give d r i v e to the f o r w a r d s w i t h l o n g d istance k i c k s . L i o n e l Davies , W a l Speed and Don M c E v o y ( u n t i l i n j u r e d ) combined s t r o n g g r o u n d p lay w i t h fine c l e a r i n g f r o m the back l i n e .

Top of the ' T o w n was Ossie Grose, who , w i t h h i s fine p o s i t i o n a l p lay and u n d e r s t a n d i n g w i t h the f u l l - f o r w a r d , F r a n k F i n l a y , was an ob ject lesson to younger p layers . B e t w e e n t h e m they scored n i n e of t h e side's t o t a l of four­teen goals. Ron Grose also stood out for a serviceable game on the w i n g . T h e capta in , H a r r y Free , m a r k e d and k i cked i n g r a n d s t y l e and was w e l l supported by b r o t h e r B i l l y a t centre hal f -back. K e v . E g a n w o r k e d h a r d i n the r u c k and k i c k e d t w o nice goats f r o m the h a l f - f o r w a r d l i n e . Seventeen year o ld J i m m y Brooks and n ineteen year o lder , Bobby W a l s h , roved i n fine fash ion . Sons of f o r m e r N e w t o w n p layers , t h e y are p r o v i n g a decided asset to the Red and W h i t e s .

R u c k m a n R o n W i l l i a m s and J a c k A r m s t r o n g ( f o r m e r N e w t o w n p layers ) gave b r i l l i a n t d isp lays for L i v e r p o o l against f o r m e r t eam mates . T h e rovers , R. N o l a n and N . Coppin , were q u i c k to seize on t h e m a n y o p p o r t u n i ­t ies offered and were o f t e n under not i ce for d e l i g h t f u l p lay . W . N o r q u a y (Tassie) and B. Sanders were s m a r t f o r w a r d s , who m a r k e d and k i c k e d to per fec t i on . A . Granna , D. Creek a n d T. M u r p h y were s t r o n g i n defence and r e l i e v e d w i t h d e t e r m i n a t i o n . T h e

F o r the N o r t h e r n e r s B i l l M c M a h o n at centre ha l l -back gave a d a s h i n g d i sp lay o f so l id defence. S h o w i n g a good t u r n o f speed and u s i n g d r i v i n g drop k i c k s t o p o s i t i o n , he i n i t i a t e d m a n y a t tacks . L a c h i e Thompson ' s f ive goals were w e l l earned f r o m excel­l en t pos i t i ona l p lay and good overhead w o r k . J i m T h o m a s a g a i n excel led at centre h a l f - f o r w a r d , w h e r e he w o r k e d w e l l , and by his p lay-on tac t i c s k e p t the f o r w a r d zone open. B i l l H a w k i n s appears to have r e g a i n e d the t ouch he showed ear ly i n the season. H i s back­i n g up of t h e fu l l -back w e r e features of i n t e l l i g e n t back pocket p lay . Others i n a v e r y even t e a m to t a k e t h e eye were P a u l Josephson, A r c h P i l l i n g , A r t h u r W a g h o r n and T o m Giles.

Coach J o h n n y Q u i n n proved w h a t a va luab le asset he is on the h a l f - f o r w a r d flank. H e plays the game as i t should be p layed , and his k i c k f o r goal i n t h e last t e r m was a gem. B r i l l i a n t r o v e r , L o u H u n t , once more t u r n e d on a g rand per f o rmance , capp ing i t off w i t h three fine goals. O t h e r p layers w h o stood out w e r e D i c k Hughes , D o n M u n r o , Don H i c k s o n and W . K i n g .

A t the general meeting on Monday evening last the State Selectors an­nounced that Al l ison T e r r e l l (Broken H i l l ) had been chosen to replace O. Pirak (Broken Hi l l ) who withdrew on account of inability to secure leave of absence from work. T e r r e l l is IS years of age, 5ft. 9in.. and weighs 12 stone. Me is displaying outstanding form and

It was reported that Mr. Alan Mclntyre, former umpire and recently appointed Umpire's Coach, had been admitted to Pr ince Alfred Hospital the previous Fr iday . Mr. Mclntyre had given the umpires instruction the pre­vious evening at E r s k i n e v i l l e Oval . Al l members and followers of the code will wish A lan a speedy return to good health.

Mr. F r e d Blencowe, Assistant Honorary Secretary of the League and junior stalwart, tendered his resigna­tion, due to removing his place of residence to an outer suburb. T h e resignation was accepted with regret and a note of commendation was placed on the books in regard to the efficient manner in which Mr. Blen­cowe had discharged his duties. T h e vacancy will be filled at the next meeting.

H a v i n g i n m i n d the i m p o r t a n c e of the occasion, i t is expected t h a t a l a r g e band o f officials and supporters w i l l be at C e n t r a l R a i l w a y S t a t i o n to b i d our representat ives every success i n t h e i r b i g adventure .
