CONVENTION DATA A total of over 160 Victoria n dancers

will be attending the Convention in June a nd with Queensland and New South Wa\es participating , the influx of dancers Irom interstate should be between the 250 and 300 mark - a marvellous response. South Australia ha d better look to its la urels, otherwise they will be out-numbered. Bill Ralph and Laurie Spal . The Convention will 00i·

ciall y fini sh on the SUlldoy night and the idea of an orga· nised picni c on the lUonday will not be practicable tiS most intcrstllte doneers will be homewa rd bound,

ding from New Soulh Wales, who 50 capably handled the discussions and Genera l Business segment. etc. las t rea r. have been asked Iry Colin \0

offi ciate in the same capacit y at the Adelaide Cou vention.

One thing ColiD has decided on and that is nol·to ollcr orgulli!e thi Convention Ilnd to gi\'c the visitors some relaxation , instcnd of going flat oul from go 10 wholl. It is wilb this in mind that there will not be an official bus tour on the Saturday afternoon tiS

previously planned. Queen.i. land nnd New South Wales dancers travelling by bus wiU probably appreciate this in particular, and ' one must not overlook the fact that dancers will still be arriving Saturday afte';noon. 1£ per.§Qns with their own cars would like to have a trip to the beach or the hills and they want a guide 10 accompany them they shall have olle by all means, bUI we will be keeping our flDgers crossed , as regards tbe \,'cather, Don '\ expect the same kind of weather that we had in Sydney last June,

Liaison officers ,,·ilI be stay. ing at the same hotel as the dancers, and they will altend the queries and help the visit· ors as mueh as possible, Buses wiU be orga nised to get the dancers £-rom their place of abode to the Sha ndon on the Sunday , Buses will also pick up the dancers who arc stay· ing at Glenelg ami Henley Beach to take th em to the Po· lois Sa turday night. Those folk booked in al the Gro!· yenor are in the same street os the " Palais" ( North Ter· race) , so no transport prob· lems arise.

Brian Townsend and Colin Huddleston " 'ill be holding their own sepa rate dance on the iHonday night Ilnd visitors will be made welcome, but more of that lnler, As quite n number of interstate dancers will be arriving on the Friday night, the " Get Acquainted" Dance nt the Thebarlon Town Hall should be well a llended, Would intcrstate callers who will bc here on the Fridav night please contact Colin , sO arrangements can be made re calling for that night - so please make contact as soon as possible.

H ank Johannessen !rom Newcastle will unfortunolelv be unnble to nltend, but \"c understand that quite a fo\\' dancers frOIll NewcasLie wi ll be here and " 'e are looking forward to meeting them.

At sta ted in a !)I'evious lll11gazi ne, dressed sels will be promenaded on the floor a l the Palais on the Sa tu rdav night and they will have n special sc;;sion of 10 minutes dancing,

Round dancing will be eatered for some tiDle during Sund3)' ( the eX3et time will be announced later) and Colin in tends askinl! two well· known interstate teachers of round dlll1cing to take charge of tha t particul ar segment. Convent ion tickets will be available from your State orga nise r or club calle r at the ('nd of the month (April ) ,

LQNG WEEKEND CONVENTIONS

( by Graham Rlgby, Qld.) "Why," asks Brian 'fowns

end , in las! month's "Review" "arc Conventions held on Ion'; wl!..:k~'nds?" Brian proceeds to pOint out that Ih~rc orc n number 01 dancer~ who urc unablc to arrange their an. nual . Ie~\'(~ when a long weekend IS Included, and , tor this reason, ha,,·c to miss out on attending Conventions in olher States.

J belie'·c thaI Ihe reason for long weekend Conventions lies in .Ihe fact that, where only limited Inn-cl is involt'ed dancers and callers may "border-hop" within the space of three or four days. For in. stance, we, in Queensland can attend Conventions in Sydney Newcastle, Canberra and Bris: bane without the need of la king our annual leave jwt as, for instance. Melbourne dancers could journey to Sydney, Newcastle or Adelaide just (or the long weekend, if nccessary_

Brian sta tes that mon people who attend Conventions can a rrange their holidllYS (or any time of thc year, but I, for onc, ca nnot, lind there are many Qucenslanders in this same position. In order to attend Conventions in Mel· bourne or Adelaide, it requires arranging for one week of our annual leave. which, although granted previously, is most difficult t o get. It must be ngreed that the majority of Australians, of necessity, take their holiday.. ;\1 ChrillLmas lime.

Summing up. [ fecI that long weekends nrc the only lim. ~ for Com-enlions if wc nre 10 ha,·c the maximum numher attending. Certainly. those who can ,Irrange their holidays at any time havc a distinct advantage, but I dare say that, if a poll were taken in Brisbane last month. less than half of the visiting dance~ were on annual lea\-e. Long weekends are part of our success formula for future Conventions, so "when you're on a good thing - stick to il!"

A Call eTs Viewpoint

I not i ced that on t he "oonvention agenda", the subj ect of "St anda r ddl sation of singing ca lla" Is mentioned for di scussion and r Bhoul d like to express my own viewpoint on thiB sub j ect . I would 11k~. t o po i nt out that I am no t in f a vour standardising "Singing Calls' ~maln ~ r easons a re;-

1. Not enough singing calls a re made avai ble t oday t o suit the begi nner and i nterme diate l evel dencer and therefore it becomes necessary to mOdify the mor e ad vanoed da nce to Bult t he part icular need ..

2 . Each ca ller has t o r etai n his own i nd i viduality which makes him dif~8r from t he next caller . Al so by ohang ing an occasional rnovemoift1t encB t o keep the dancer ale:tt rather t hen da nce "'Pa r ro t f ash:
