Welcome to The Australian Arabian Horse News’ 2012 Australian Championship Contenders E-magazine, which depicts many of Australia’s magnificent Arabian and Arabian Derivative horses competing at this prestigious show.

The championships are the pinnacle of the Arabian horse fraternity’s showing year. The state of Victoria had the honour of hosting the first Australian Championships in 1982 at the Melbourne Showgrounds. Champion Stallion was Birubi Aura (Ringing Gold UK x Arabesque Desert Jewel), Champion Mare 27 Ibn Galal-5 (Ibn Galal x 10 Hosna 71) imported from Hungary and Champion Under Saddle was the stallion Arim (Royal Domino iid GB x Mutrif). Herr Holger Ismir from Germany holds the distinction of being the first international judge for the championships in 1982, alongside Australians Cyril Jensz (WA) and Dick Best (NSW). The show was held over one day.

This year’s Australian National Arabian Championships will be held over five days on 14 – 18 March at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park (SIEC), NSW. The crème de la crème of Arabian and Arabian Derivative horses and their owners will congregate at SIEC from most states around Australia in anticipation of five days of top-notch competition for the coveted championship trophies.

Spectators are most welcome and entry to the show is free. Highlights over the five days include an Exhibition Race and an Endurance Training Ride to be held on

Saturday starting at approximately 11.30am and 12.00pm, respectively. Saturday evening at approximately 6.00pm there will be a Trail Class, Jackpot Barrel Race and Jackpot Teams Challenge Barrel Race. Check out the Arabian Horse Society of Australia’s website for further details at www.ahsa.asn.au or check with the Secretary’s Office on show day to confirm these times.

Two international judges will be presiding at this year’s show - Kelly Elm (USA) and Jacquie Webby (NZ). Australians invited to judge are Kim Cox (QLD); Vickie Reid (VIC); Graham Smith (ACT); Kerry Rogers (VIC) and Cathy Padgen-Cowan (NSW).

kelly elm said she was honoured and excited to judge the Australian Championships and to have the opportunity to see our beautiful Arabians and spectacular country. Kelly has had horses her entire life. She won the “Kinder” class at her first horse show when she was seven, and became hooked on showing. Kelly began training professionally in 1981 and started judging in 1991. She has judged the US Nationals, Youth Nationals, Canadian Nationals, Scottsdale All Arabian Show, and will be judging the inaugural Arabian Horse Celebration in Kentucky in 2012, and also holds a National Show Horse judges card, serves as a Delegate for the Santa Ynez Valley Arabian Horse Association and is on numerous AHA committees. Kelly has been training at Arroyo Arabians in Santa Ynez, California for more than 25 years, where they run a successful amateur program with National and Regional wins in the English, Western,

Hunter and Breeding divisions. She is lucky enough to live at the farm in Santa Ynez with her partner Ron and their daughter, Flora. Kelly’s pet hate is harsh hands, whether at the end of a lead or on the reins!

New Zealand-born journalist, Arabian breeder and judge, Jacquie Webby, has lived in many parts of the world including Australia, England and the Middle East. A confirmed horse addict from the age of 11 when she bred her first Anglo Arabian, Jacquie initially established her Arabian stud in Australia in the early 1980s using the prefix Al Dhahab. Relocating to the country of her birth in late 1985, she took back to New Zealand three purebred Arabian horses and two dogs. The three horses proved to be the seed stock for the continuation of her stud and subsequently, Jacquie has imported a number of horses from Australia including purebred, Anglo Arabian and Arabian Warmbloods and used northern hemisphere sourced frozen semen to broaden the stud’s gene pool. Horses either bred or owned by the stud have taken out a number of New Zealand Championships in both purebred and derivative rings, in both halter and performance. In addition to Arabians, Jacquie is accredited to judge several other horse breeds. When asked about her pet hates, Jacquie responds: “A couple of my pet dislikes whilst judging is over-stretched horses at the stand-up and excessive shanking. Thank you for the invitation to be in Sydney in March. I am certainly looking forward to the Australian National Arabian Championships 2012.”

WHere to Stay, eat and VISItBy Carlie Beer

For anyone travelling to the Australian National Arabian Championships, the obvious questions include where to stay, where to eat and what other activities or tourist destinations may be available close to the venue.

The Chifley Hotel at Eastern Creek is only a few minutes’ drive away from the Sydney International Equestrian Centre where the show will be held at Horsley Park, and is reasonably priced, with comfortable and well-appointed rooms. The Chifley Hotel Penrith is located further from the grounds, where it adjoins the well-known Penrith Panthers. Here they have various bars, restaurants and both indoor and outdoor activities such as aqua golf, an amusement centre and for the energetic - wakeboarding, white water rafting, canoeing, or bush walking.

Previous competitors and spectators at the Aussie Champs also suggest the Hotel Novotel Rooty Hill with the Rooty Hill RSL Club nearby, or the Mercure Sydney Liverpool with its gym, ice rink, mini golf and three pools. Two restaurants that come highly recommended and close to SIEC are Il Piatto – phone (02) 9620 2166 on Wallgrove Road or Maurizio’s – phone (02) 9756 1133, a short drive at Wetherill Park. The Italian heritage of the area shines through, as both restaurants are well known for their pizza, seafood and pasta dishes.

If you have a spare day, there is plenty to do in the general area. Featherdale Wildlife Park at Doonside provides interaction and viewing of iconic Australian animals, perfect for any international visitors or families with children to keep occupied! Parramatta is only 20 minutes away with its multitude of restaurants, hotels, clubs and shops. For a different option, make the trip to Windsor for a relaxed and historic feel. Browse the gift shops, heritage buildings or sip a cup of rich and delicious coffee at one of the cafes. Why not pick up a Hawkesbury Farm Gate Tour pamphlet at a local information centre or your hotel and drop into the orchards, wineries, and cheese options in the area. Interestingly, 15% of the state’s fruit and vegetables are grown here, so there are flavours and produce to suit everyone. Another magical place to visit is the Blue Mountains, where you can see the Three Sisters rock formation and enjoy many more activities. Closer to SIEC is the adjoining Western Sydney Parklands, a rather large 5,280 hectares, encompassing picnic areas, cycle and walk ways and native bush land.
