With three outlets in Toowoomba, Roma and Emerald, Chas Sankey Fraser is one of the leading optometrists in Australia. Set up over eighty years ago by Charles Sankey Fraser, it now has twelve collaborators. Cameron McMaster told their story exclusively to WMIDO and revealed that Made in Italy products are very popular in the local market. Can you tell us the story of your shops?

Charles Sankey Fraser started visiting in Toowoomba in 1923. Since then chas Sankey Fraser visited most country towns in Queensland. We have now three full time practices in Toowoomba, Roma and Emerald. Toowoomba is 150 km west of Brisbane, Roma is 350 km west of Toowoomba and Emerald is 750 km northwest of Toowoomba. Toowoomba was established in 1923, Roma established in 1988 and Emerald in 1995. Each optometrist is therapeutically qualified which allows them to dispense topical eye medications. What kind of eyewear and sunglasses are Australian people looking for?

We have found our clients in regional Queensland to be looking for good UV protection from the harsh elements of our sun, comfort, durability and fashion. You live in a sunny country: are people aware of the dangerous effect of the sun for their eyes? Do they ask for high protection lenses?

Australian standards now demand 100% UV and good coverage. Are they interested in Made in Italy products?

Italian products are always of a high quality and we encourage/guide our patients to the most appropriate products for their needs.

What about the interior design of your shops? We have recently refurbished our Roma and Emerald

practices and they are both up to date in appearance with clean lines which present our frames to their best potential. What guides your choices in terms of eyewear/brands?

We have a dedicated buyer who spends a lot of time working with company reps, fashion advisors to keep us up to date with latest trends. This was our main reason for our trip to MIDO.How do you find new brands/products to sell in your shop?

We have a great team of agents/ reps from our Australian suppliers. We have an Australian ODMA fair similar to MIDO on in Brisbane the first weekend in July and runs every other year.Which are the fairs that you attend?ODMA and recently MIDO, and hopefully Silmo next year.

Eyewear goes to ZagrebAgainst the prestigious backdrop of the Hotel Esplanade in Zagreb on May 13 and 14, Anfao, in collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission (ICE), set up a workshop in which twenty-two Italian companies took part. Conceived to present and promote products by Made in Italy companies, the event garnered the considerable interest of buyers, distributors and eye care professionals from fourteen eastern European countries (Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Georgia and Kazakhstan). Eyewear was the star also at the gala evening on Wednesday, May 13, when the models by participating companies were shown on the runway.

In collaboration with Danish fashion designer Asger Juel Larsen, acknowledged for his rule breaking reinvention of modern menswear, Ørgreen created a limited edition of sunglasses available in three colours. Asger Juel Larsen is obsessed with pushing menswear into what he calls “psychotic sophistication”. An aesthetic anarchist who thrives in a crooked world of warfare, romance and gothic utopia, Larsen recently won the International Woolmark Prize Europe, also won in the past by

Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. The sunglasses take a sturdy classical frame, and apply neon green and orange into the framework. The limited edition collection is now available via their webshop and will be available later in the spring in selected stores.

Italia Independent enters mobile accessories world

Partnership between JD.com and Luxottica

JD.com, China's largest online direct sales company, has announced that it is partnering with Luxottica to offer a wide range of sunglasses from some of the best-known global brands. The partnership will enable JD.com customers to purchase a range of luxury sunglasses from the leading brands in Luxottica's portfolio, including Ray-Ban, Oakley and Vogue. Most of the products will be available through JD.com's direct sales channel, enabling Luxottica to leverage JD.com's industry-leading nationwide logistics network featuring standard same- and next-day delivery.

Puro will create for Italia Independent a collection of mobile phone and tablet accessories composed of a range of brand’s characteristic patterns, materials, technologies and treatments. “We are entering a world that has had vertical growth over the past 10 years”, explained Giovanni Accongiagioco, Managing Director and Co-Founder of Italia Independent. The collection is a journey through the covers dedicated to iPhone6 and iPhone6 Plus: the All Over texture, for example, reproduces infinite “090” models on the surface, while the Velvet line has the “velvet-effect” treatment, a distinctive feature of Italia Independent, in four colors.

On May 20 Vasuma Eyewear will celebrate its first ten years of business at its new location in the historical center of Stockholm. A mega party in honor of the style created by Jan Vana, Steffen Sundelius and Lars Malmsten, who in 2005 decided to challenge large distribution circuits by proposing Swedish eyewear with an essential and minimalist design. The new "townhouse" is where the creative energies of the three designers unite with those of Deadwood Leather, the Swedish brand of biker jackets in recycled leather. The union led to a capsule collection inspired by the biker style: model Vasuma-Deadwood in metal and real leather with removable leather spectacle cord represents a part of that world with a unisex style and contemporary soul, in sun and optical versions.

Eyewear you see but don't hear. Innovative and modern. Fashion in its purest state. Ultra-light materials such as titanium or steel and trogamid for those that love comfort and practicality; frames in horn or wood for those with an urban style and a country spirit; or models in precious and environmentally-friendly acetate. There are also inserts in leather or fabric because glasses are not just accessories but genuine items of clothing.

“That’s Pitticolor” will be the theme of Pitti Uomo 88, the fair devoted to men’s fashion scheduled for June 16 through 19 in Florence. The main players are colors and their language, one of the fundamental fashion codes that will be interpreted in a special digital art project. The guest designer will be Moschino, that will present the brand’s first menswear fashion show in Italy since Jeremy Scott became creative director. Eyewear will also have its space with Eye Pop, confirmation of the intention to widen its horizons to include the fashion world.

Aab, the Islamic fashion brand leader of online sales, is now in London or, more precisely, East London, with its first boutique. This is the brand’s first outlet and over the next three years this opening will be followed by others in major international financial and fashion centers. Aab offers a complete range of products: from capes to long day dresses, via luxury hijabs, office apparel, maternity wear and accessories (rings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches).

On Saturday, May 9, the 56th International Art Exhibition opened its doors at the Giardini della Biennale and the Arsenale. Titled All the World’s Futures, it is curated by Okwui Enwezor and chaired by Paolo Baratta. For this edition there will be a single itinerary that includes 136 artists - 89 of whom will be showing for the first time - from 53 countries. There are 159 new works for this edition. “The Biennale is 120 years old” – Baratta explained – “(...) and once more observes the relationship between art and the development of the human, social, and political world, as external forces and phenomena loom large over it. Our aim is to investigate how the tensions of the outside world act on the sensitivities and the vital and expressive energies of artists, on their desires and their inner song”.

At the beginning of May, the Prada Foundation opened its new location in Milan, where the present will be analyzed via contemporary art exhibitions, architectural projects, cinema and philosophy. The architectural project developed by OMA, the studio headed by Rem Koolhaas, expands the repertoire of spaces typologies in which art can be displayed and shared with the public. Featuring an architectural configuration that merges seven existing buildings with three new constructions (Podium, Cinema and Torre), the new location is the conversion of a distillery dating back to the 1910s.
