An open letter to parents about the MySchool website

The launch of the MySchool website has received a mixed reaction from parents, teachers and the broader school community over the past week.

Schools have always used diagnostic tests such as NAPLAN to inform teaching programs and guide the allocation of learning resources. However it is too simplistic to use these

one-off test results to judge the performance of a school. Merriwa district schools do a great job of educating the whole child. Our schools take a

holistic approach to student learning and wellbeing, with an emphasis on academic performance, pastoral care, and opportunities that develop a range of skills and talents in our students.

These are developed effectively in a school climate where we emphasise tolerance, understanding and harmony. Social skills, particularly those that create good teamwork,

are essential in the 21st century. Our schools are always looking at ways to improve the outcomes for every individual

student, and tests, including NAPLAN, should be used to help diagnose an individual’s learning progress.

We welcome the discussion about improving student outcomes with parents, which is an ongoing discussion. Staff readily engage in this process through parent teacher meetings,

P&C/P&F, annual reports, and regular communication in the Merriwa Ringer. We extend an open invitation to parents to discuss and clarify any items raised by the

MySchool website. Only in partnership with parents can learning outcomes be maximised for our students.

MERRIWA CENTRAL SCHOOL

Welcome back to a very exciting new school year. The year ahead is filled with great opportunity for staff and students at Merriwa Central School. It was with great pleasure over the break that I joined the Australia Day celebrations at Cassilis to see two of our students recognised for outstanding achievement. Congratulations to Tegan Cornish who was awarded Young Citizen of the Year, and Emily Wightman who received a scholarship for academic achievement. Emily completed Year 12 in 2009 and is about to undertake a degree in sports science at Southern Cross University. Another of our Year 12 students from 2009, Micah Keily has been accepted into the University of New England to study archaeology. New staff Mrs Ruth Hoye joins our staff as Deputy Principal (Primary). Mrs Hoye was relieving principal at Sandy Hollow Public last year, and brings a wealth of expertise to the position. The position is funded under the National Partnerships program for the next four years, and will work with staff and students to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes. As Deputy Principal (Primary) Mrs Hoye will be in charge of the day to day organisation on the primary campus. Miss Christina Cavalot will replace Mrs Lynda Marshall who is currently on leave. Miss Cavalot is no stranger to our students and will take Yr4/5 in Mrs Marshall’s absence. Miss Erin Temessl will take on a new role this year working across primary and secondary as support teacher learning assistance, and in reading recovery. Both roles will support students who require additional assistance to improve their literacy and numeracy results. In addition we welcome new Learning Support Officers (LSO’s) Mrs Maria Gibbons and Ms Donna Cox working with our primary students.

New students Welcome to our new Kindergarten and Year 7 students and parents. It can be very daunting for students and parents at the start of a new school year. Miss Maher (K/1 Teacher) and Miss Tolley (Yr7 Year Adviser) are available to answer any questions parents may have about school life and the new routine. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if we can be of assistance. Community Liaison To improve communication between the school and parents the school will appoint a community liaison officer. The part time position will be advertised shortly and is funded through the National Partnership program. Informal get-together Last year we initiated an informal get-together of parents and teachers as an opportunity to say hello at the start of the school year. The evening is a chance for parents to meet some of the staff in a relaxed environment outside the formal parent teacher interviews. Invitations will be sent out next week, however keep the evening of Thursday February 18 free.

2010 Maths, Science, PD/H/PE, Technology, Agriculture Faculty News

Although we have been back for less than a week, students and teachers are back in the swing of school life and learning is well and truly underway. This year we have the following teachers working within our key learn ing areas : Mr Ph i l Mar tyn (technology), Mr Peter Davidson (science), Ms Alexis Moore (PD/H/PE), Ms Laura Tolley (ag, science, technology), Mr John Kaye (mathemat i cs ) , Mr V i shwa Nath (mathematics), Mrs Pam Amidy (mathematics) and myself (mathematics and biology). We are all looking forward to a challenging and rewarding year. By now, all students will have been given information essential to their course, this includes a scope and sequence of what they will be taught as well as what assessment tasks to expect. They will also have book work rules outlining what is expected in their presentation and the necessity for covering their books with plastic to protect them. Years 9 and 10 will also have performance descriptors for each course detailing what is involved in gaining a particular grade for that subject. Seniors will also have copies of the syllabus for their course and a sheet showing the percentage of HSC students in each band in last year’s examination. Being informed is an essential part of making wise decisions in their education and students need to refer to this information on a regular basis to allow them to plan for assessment tasks. Mathematics students will be issued with text books and these need to be brought to all lessons as well as used to complete homework if needed. If any text books have been found over the break, please return them as soon as possible to avoid being issued with an invoice for their cost. All students need to have a calculator, which can be purchased from the Office on the secondary campus.

Again this year, students will have the opportunity to compete in competitions in mathematics and science, a note will be sent at a later date outlining the cost and dates for these. The Science and Engineering Challenge will again be on and we look forward to a large group of students representing us again. Ms Moore is again organizing the Star Struck group to take part in the spectacular in Newcastle and she also has many sport competitions in mind. The Steer Program is under the organization of Ms Tolley and plans are already in place to get the oats up and growing for them. As you can see, 2010 is going to be a busy and productive year. Please contact us if you have areas of concern as we value your feedback and ideas

VET News

The holidays were a busy time for some VET students who continued to complete traineeship hours in the workplace and finish off their Year 12 work placements. Pictured below is Rhiannon Teague a Business Services student who completed a week of work placement at the Upper Hunter Shire Council Scone office.

Merriwa Central School has a record number of students commencing vocational education courses this year so it will be a busy time as work placement is required for each course along with theoretical training.

This year TAFE courses commence on the 4 February so if you have enrolled in a TAFE course at either the Muswellbrook or Scone campus you will be travelling to TAFE on Thursdays by bus that leaves Merriwa Central School at 11.45 am and returning at approximately 6.00 pm. The bus is subsidised by Hunter Central Coast Vocational Education Department and students are requested to purchase their ticket to travel on the bus from the office at the secondary prior to getting on the bus. Cost of the bus is $7.50.

It is expected that students will wear school uniform to TAFE and if completing a trade that requires manual work, overalls and work boots will be taken to TAFE to change into. TAFE is an adult learning environment and as such students are expected to behave in a responsible manner that ensures everyone has the opportunity to maximise their learning. Attendance at TAFE is compulsory and students that miss a number of sessions may jeopardise the opportunity provided to gain a vocational qualification.

We wish everyone a successful year as they complete their vocational qualifications in Year 12 or are just beginning them in Year 11. If anyone has any queries concerning their course please contact their relevant teacher or Mrs Jane Hegarty.

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

Welcome back to all. We do hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyable holiday period. We especially welcome our new students – James Bibby, Heath Schmidt (both Kindergarten) and Kiera Hoffman (Year Five), and their families. This now gives us seven girls and eleven boys. The girls are certainly pleased to have another girl in our school. This also gives us two more families in our school, and we all look forward to working with them, as we do with all families, in assisting our students to have the best education that we can offer them. May I take this opportunity to congratulate Brian and Fiona Cornish who were honoured as Merriwa district Citizen of the Year last Tuesday at the Australia Day Celebrations here in Cassilis for their continued great efforts in our community. Also, congratulations to Tegan Cornish who was honoured as Junior Citizen of the Year. We know that Tegan is also a very dedicated young member of our community who shows a real community spirit. Congratulations must also go to all those nominated in the variety of sections, even though there could only be one winner in each. It was a real delight to attend the celebrations here in Cassilis and share in the celebrations with so many district people. This Wednesday afternoon (1:30pm) we will be having a musical performance at school. Parents of school students are invited to attend and bring their pre-school children with them. The performance goes for about 1 ½ hours, finishing in time for the home-time bell. There are a number of changes in some lesson this year. Mrs Leman will be here on Mondays and Wednesdays this year, so the following will occur: Art – Monday (could we have a paint shirt for each child please)

News Day – Tuesday (roster with this Newsletter). Library – Wednesday (Please organise a bag for each of your school children) Scripture – Thursday (I think – need to verify with Sr Bridget and Rev. Mandy) Sport – Friday Assembly – Friday morning – odd weeks this term – start Friday of next week. Mrs Anne-Maree Nairne will be working with us again this year in a full-time role, and Mrs Fiona Cornish will be working with us a few hours per week, a little more than last year. Mrs Gant will still be with us five days a fortnight, and, other than today, will normally be with us each Monday and Wednesday, with the other day possibly being a Thursday each fortnight. Mike is back with us again, and is working Monday and Thursday mornings. You are likely to see him here most mornings though, as he is coming up to run the sprinklers next to our concrete area, and check to see if there are any urgent jobs needing doing. Once again a big THANK YOU to Barb for the beaut job she did while Mike was on leave, and welcome back to Mike. For the next few months Rodney Bibby will be working with Mike on the grounds. Welcome Rodney, we hope you will enjoy working with us, and we look forward to you working with Mike. Once again this year, we would appreciate the assistance of any parent who could spare half an hour or so to listen to students read to them. We very much appreciated the assistance given to us last year by Mrs Joelene Morton, and hope that one or more parents will be able to help out this year. We will be doing a unit about the Winter Olympics in Vancouver this term. Any assistance you may be able to give to your

child/children in doing some research at home would be greatly appreciated. We will be especially working on it of a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Swimming lessons start in two weeks time. We do hope that we have a week of good weather for a change. Due to the available times of instructors, our lessons are between 1pm and 2pm daily. This enables us to get back by home time each day. Just a couple of reminders: When you park in the school grounds and are getting out of your car, please park backed in to the top fence near the trees (unless it is wet); Please collect children from outside the Office when school finishes and have them walk to your car with you. These are to ensure the safety of our students with cars moving in and out of the playground. Thank you for your assistance. Well done to the Rodeo Committee for such a successful day / night on Saturday. Although I did not get to see it all, it was a great rodeo, enjoyed by all. I hope everyone was as impressed with our School Photos as I was at the end of last year. Even my children were very impressed with how good I looked in them – and my sons very seldom make such comments. Our last Veg Watch Session will be held Wednesday 10th February starting after Recess. This is our last session, and is the Summer aspect. Mrs Clout will join us for the day, and Lorna Adlem (our Veg Watch Coordinator). Have a tremendous week!

K-2 News Welcome back everyone! I hope you have all had a fantastic holiday and are ready for another term at school. This week Kinder will have their first letter to learn and that is the letter ‘S’ that says ‘sssssss’. Year 1 and 2 will be learning the ‘sh’. Kinder’s colour of the week is Blue and the Big Book of the Week is “The Three Little Pigs”. Homework will be starting this week. I have tried to give as much detail as possible about what is expected of Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 for their homework. If you are unsure about anything or just want to clarify something feel free to come and ask me. Kinders Kinders’ homework will be as follows, each week they will be learning a new sound of the alphabet. Our school uses the Jolly Phonics program where the children learn a sound and an action that is associated with that sound. Inside their homework folder there will be a flash card of the letters that they learn. If parents could practice every night saying these letters it would be great. At school we use the following phrase for each letter - e.g. (for letter s) letter s (say the letter name), says sssssssss (say the sound that it makes while making the action). It would be great reinforcement if you could please use this phrase at home when practicing their letters. Starting next week they will also be learning two ‘Tricky Words’. ‘Tricky words’ are words that the children need to know straight away when they see it and are often words we cannot sound out. This will help them greatly in their reading. If parents could also practice these every night it would be greatly appreciated.

In their homework folder you will also find a homework book where I have written their sound, tricky words and some other activities for the week. Every night they are to complete one page. By the end of the week they will have completed all four pages. I have outline in their book where to start the letter and the direction the letter follows. The correct formation of each letter is very important The last thing that they will have is a sound reader. If parents could look at this book with their children and find things that start with the particular sound the book is related to this would be wonderful. When you have finished reading the sound book each night fill it in on the Home Reader record sheet. If you fill in a whole sheet you will receive an award at assembly! Year 1 and 2 Inside Year 1 and Year 2’s Homework folder you will find a Homework book with their spelling words for the week inside. Children are asked to re-write their spelling words every night. As they write them it may be an idea if they sound them out by saying the letter ‘name’ so they are practicing the spelling of each word as they go. A practice test on Thursday night maybe helpful for them to be ready for their spelling test on Friday at school. Students will also be sent home with a maths pack. This is a fun way to re-enforce concepts learnt at school. Inside each child’s homework folder you will find a sheet to fill in with details about the maths pack you have played. Please bring these back every Friday The last thing you will find is their reader. If parents could listen to their child read every night and fill it out on the Home Record sheet this would be wonderful. Children are also given a 1 minute read every Monday. Children are encouraged to read this every night and see how many words they can read in 1 minute. They will then be tested on

Friday. Lets see if we can beat those records from last year. I ask that Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 children bring their homework folder to school everyday with the previous nights homework completed ready to be marked. The folders will stay at school over the weekend. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in advance for helping with this. Homework is an integral part of your child’s schooling and benefits them greatly. Thank you so much for your support. I am looking forward to another wonderful week. I hope you all have a fantastic week. Take Care

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

Welcome to the St Joseph’s 2010 school year. I am so thankful that all our students have returned to us after the Christmas break with good health and happy stories to share about their time spent with family and friends. We are very conscious that not all schools are as fortunate as us and with so many road accidents and drownings and other tragedies many schools have returned to heartbreak. We are also conscious of the plight of the people of Haiti who are still suffering so much after their recent earthquake. Our prayers and thoughts go out to all people who are suffering at present.

A special welcome to our new students and their families – Claudia Frampton, Camdyn Constable, Piper Cropper, Damian Jamieson, Chloe and Oliver Towell, Charles Brazier, Jorji Taaffe, Bailey and Callum Telfer. We wish you a very long and happy association with our school.

Welcome to Miss Nicole Lasker who has joined our school community this year. Nicole is teaching K/1 with Mrs Anne Marie Peebles who we also welcome back after her period of leave last year. Already Nicole and Anne Marie have the children in K/1 engaged and motivated.

Our first day saw Piper Cropper’s arrival at school as part of a 4 generational entourage. Piper was accompanied by her parents, grandmother and great-grandparents. Thank you to the Cronin, Martin, Peebles, Whale, Gilbey, Porter, Deasy and Moore families who volunteered to water our veggies over the break. The results speak for themselves. Thank you to Oliver and the Towell family who took great care of the chooks while we were away. They are certainly looking very rested after their country holiday. Thank you also to the Redgate, Cameron, Cronin, Sampson, Peebles, Whale, Porter families and Claire and John who were able to join us for the working bee in January. We managed to do a mammoth amount of work in just 2 hours and had the school looking tip top for the children to return to on Thursday. We also enjoyed a relaxing lunch together afterward. It was wonderful to have ex-students Montana Kisi and Liam Cronin (Class of ‘09) as well as Josh Whale and Emily Cameron (Class of ’04) giving us a cheerful helping hand to. What a great school community we have! Congratulations to Anastasia Martin on winning the Young Achiever award at the Australia Day celebrations. Tasia was awarded this very special award for her achievements in horse riding, swimming, athletics, cross-country and public speaking. Congratulations to the Medd Family for their achievements in sustainable agriculture which was awarded with an Australia Day Award. Playground equipment: You will have noticed the wonderful extension to our playground equipment over the holidays. There are now a large number of extra activities to help develop upper and lower body strength and increase gross motor skills.

MERRIWA PRE-SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION

Welcome Back to all Children and Families to Merriwa Pre-school We would like to say hello and welcome to each and every family who is now part of our small but caring ‘community’ at Pre-school. As we all get to know each other, relationships will start to develop, between children staff and parents. This does take time, but children and parents alike will, in time, become to feel very much part of their pre-school. We urge you to become involved, to ask questions and to enjoy your time spent with us.

Some important changes in our operation and staffing Due to increased numbers, the Pre-school will be operating full time in 2010. Administration for myself will be broken into two blocks of time, each Tuesday and Thursday from 11am to 2.30pm. During this time, the program will continue to run in capable hands of Leah Folpp assisted by Lanni Bardot (welcome Lanni!) and Jessyca Morgan, who we are very excited to welcome as our new Trainee! Jessyca will be working each day and we are so pleased to have her as part of the regular team. We hope that Jessica enjoys learning and participating in our Early Childhood program, and urge you to say hello and make her feel welcome. How wonderful for all – especially the children – to have another set of caring and capable hands to gently guide them. During office time, parents should be reassured that I will be still be on hand for any necessary supervision and assistance, as needed. The hours have been carefully planned to enable me to spend some time with almost all children in attendance.

Some more exciting changes have happened in our playground. Here you see some children enjoying some wonderful new panels in our fixed climbing equipment, which was purchased as a result of some fundraising in the latter half of the year.

Teamwork! Damien and Ella using our new ball chute panel.

Matthew tries out the new sling…… I think his smile is the stamp of approval! Many thanks to Paul Carrall for helping out to get this ready for the children, as well as m o w i n g t h e p l a y g r o u n d . Thanks Paul!

Paddy gets ready to try out the binoculars. This is why we depend so much on parental support at fundraising events – to allow us to provide these great ‘extras’ for our children. A reminder to all parents that we depend on you to help with the maintenance of our grounds, and we are compiling our 2010 list of those able to help out occasional with mowing and whipper snipping. Please let us know if you would like to add your name to the list. It is not only very important for the safe play of our children, but is also a way of earning some reward points, not to mention being rewarding for the parent to see how much their good work is appreciated. Until next week,

Jill Martyn (Teaching Director)

MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE After School and Vacation Care

Catering for 5 – 12 year olds

Hello from MAC staff. We trust everyone had a wonderful and safe break.

Vacation Care We had a very successful January Vacation Care. Our numbers were very good most days and on our excursion day we had a “full house”!! Our excursion to Singleton was very full on with Ten Pin Bowling, a movie and a trip to McDonalds for an ice cream sundae. Even with such a full schedule we got back to Merriwa with time to have a few group games before parents started to arrive to pick up their children.

Over the break the children made wonderful musical instruments out of recycled boxes etc. They made drums, guitars, tambourines and even a rain maker. When the instruments were completed Sarah videotaped the children making music with them. The children really enjoyed watching themselves on tape. Other crafts included weaving looms, paper mache bowls, pet rocks, catch a ball, balloon craft, sand candles, nature mobiles, puppets, wind chimes, pencil cases and scrap books. While these activities were in the program the children often enjoyed implementing their own wonderful ideas and made lots of interesting things from our recycle box.

Every January we make cubby houses to play in. This year the children out did themselves by turning one of the VERY large cardboard boxes into a castle. The castle had “brick work” and turrets. It is amazing how many hours of fun the children got out of a simple cardboard box.

We went on quite a few local excursions too. Places we visited included the Youth Centre, library, resource centre, putt putt golf, and the squash courts. One of the most enjoyable mini excursions was to the Aged Hostel. The children and residents alike had a great time. They played bingo and had a wonderful morning tea together. Thank you to residents and staff for making us feel so welcome.

The hot weather also allowed us the opportunity to utilise the local pool. The

children always have a great time swimming and our new pool toys have added a new dimension to the fun. When we were unable to get to the pool the children cooled off by running through sprinklers and we even had a water bomb “fight” in the pre school yard.

On the final day of vacation care we had a disco complete with mirror ball and flashing lights. The girls came dressed in their finest disco outfits, some of which almost out glittered the disco ball! Thank you to Justine at the Youth Centre for lending us the disco equipment, it was very much appreciated.

Staff Changes Most parents who use the centre would know about the staff changes. Jill Carrall is the Activity Centre Co-ordinator and will be at the centre from 2pm each day. Julie Carberry is the child care worker and will also be at the centre 5 afternoons per week. Yvonne, Maria, Jayne, Sarah, Hayley and Donna are our lovely, capable casual staff.

Spot Inspection During vacation care the centre was subjected to a spot inspection by the National Childcare Accreditation Council (NCAC). The validator (Bev) spent 2 hours at the centre observing us during our normal activities. Bev asked children and staff questions and took lots of notes about what we were doing at various times during the afternoon. Bev made notes about things such as how staff interacted and conversed with the children, the activities the children were participating in and the centres hygiene practices. Bev also asked the Co ordinator how the centre intends to build on the service and Jill filled her in on some of our plans. Just before Bev left she gave us a copy of her report and it was full of praise for the centre and how it is run. She made mention of our increase in numbers and how we are endeavouring to raise the profile of the service by using community venues, thereby making a visible presence in the community.

The last line of the NCAC report is one which tells us that the activity centre is successful in

achieving one of its main goals which is to provide ”A relaxed and happy environment” for your children.

Vacancies We have vacancies for after school care on all days. January usually is a little slower as parents work out their schedules and routines. Please feel free to give us a call if you require any information about times, cost, information on child care rebates etc.

MAC Programming We are in the process of working out our weekly program. We try and base our activities around the numbers for a particular day. For example, group games are better scheduled for a day when we have lots of children. When we get a little further into the term we will have a more formal program to print. Mondays will still be our cooking days. A craft will be started on Mondays and this craft will be done by the children throughout the week.

MAC Answering Machine It is always nice to come to work and find we have messages/bookings on the answering machine. As our machine does not state the time or date of the call sometimes we need to call the parents back to confirm the details and this isn’t always convenient for the parent. To make the process a little smoother it would be appreciated if, when leaving a message, you could also state the day and time you called. Activity Centre CRN (Afterschool Care) is 55501702K and Vacation Care is 55501408J. There is also the potential for working mothers to receive up to 50% of the fees outlaid back in their tax returns. Did you know your child can attend MAC for as little as $3 per session? Contact Centrelink to find out your child care benefit (CCB).

MERRIWA SURGERY

Merriwa received a further health boost when Merriwa Surgery received the demonstrating the quality and safety of their practice. The practice received the top honour from Australia’s most respected award of accreditation body, Australian General practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL). AGPAL’s Dr R Choong said “the accreditation award shows that the practice makes a significant investment in quality on a day to day basis from the top down” Achieving accreditation is a major achievement for any practice and it is a clear demonstration that Merriwa Surgery is seeking to improve their level of service to both patients and the community” he said. “Practices seek accreditation because they want to be the best and view this as another step toward excellence.” The AGPAL accreditation program was developed jointly by AGPAL and various doctors’ organisations including the AMA. It is a voluntary national program, which aims to provide a range of guarantees to patients by accrediting the practice environment. To achieve this endorsement, a practice team works for 12 months to implement the royal Australian college of General Practitioners (RACGP). This is the standard nationally for assessment for general practice. The standards train staff in

areas such as ensuring vaccines are within their use by date and are stored at the correct temperatures, that the practice equipment is clean and sterile and the practice has emergency are available.

Dr Choong said “accreditation is attainable only through cooperation and communication between staff members.” Everyone at the practice plays a valuable role in working to meet the standards. It gives staff a real sense of pride to work in an accredited practice” added D Choong.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Kerry Hapgood and the Merriwa Progress Association and our local Councillors for their relentless support and assistance. We also appreciate the commitment of the Upper Hunter Shire Council for the upgrade and renovations at Merriwa Surgery, which was very needed. Also thanks for the assistance given by Council staff from Merriwa Shire Office.

Dr Salama and the staff at Merriwa Surgery would like to thank our local community for their support. We live in a lovely, caring community and we feel privileged to be part of it. Wishing you all a very healthy year.

Back to school to outwit the nits With Australia Day celebrations now just a memory, most Australian families – certainly those with school-age children – are looking forward to another school year; possibly with mixed feelings. Children will be meeting old friends and making some new friends too. Probably “sleep-overs” will again become part of the school-year landscape. But beware; you could be entertaining some uninvited guests as well. Statistics indicate that more than 20% of primary school students are likely to have head lice. However, the fact is anyone with a head can catch head lice – regardless of age, sex, background or how clean your hair is. Head lice spread anywhere that people work, play and live together. Most often children get them at school – often at the start of school. Indeed, it takes only one infested head to infest a whole classroom full of heads; then our children so unselfishly pass the infestation on to the rest of the family. The medical term of head lice is pediculus humanus capitis. But whichever way you describe them, these tiny wingless insects are extremely common. Head lice are endemic in Australia. They cannot jump or fly but they certainly get around; and they live their entire life (about a month or so) on the head of their host. Their favourite hiding places are behind the ears and at the back of the neck. Female lice lay their eggs (known as nits) close to the scalp, where they remain firmly stuck to the base of the hair shaft until they hatch in about a week’s time. Head lice feed exclusively on human blood; but unlike mosquitoes, another group of little blood suckers, it appears that head lice do not carry disease. They can, however, cause severe itching and this can lead to scratching and skin infections. Of course an itchy scalp may be due to many other causes – among them dandruff, psoriasis and so-called seborrhoea dermatitis. So, before you start shampooing with insecticide, it’s best to get an accurate diagnosis. The recently revised Pharmacy Self Care fact card titled Head Lice will help

confirm the problem and find the solution as well. The good news is that if you or your children have head lice, there are simple, safe and effective strategies to send them on their way. Various shampoos, lotions, cream rinses and conditioners are available. Many chemical treatments are based on the chrysanthemum-type pyrethrum insecticides; some contain malathion; and there are several remedies available based on essential oils such as anise, lavender, rosemary and the Australian favourite melaleuca (tea tree) oil. When used as indicated in some studies these natural treatments have been shown to be more effective even than the chemical treatments. If live lice are found in the combings after treatment, it’s possible that the head lice are resistant to the particular product, and the person should be retreated as soon as possible using a product from a different group. Nevertheless, most treatment failures are due to inadequate time in contact with hair and scalp, inappropriate application methods, or the use of ineffective products. Ask your pharmacist to recommend an evidence-based product – that is: one that is proven to be effective. Remember whatever head lice treatment you choose, a fine toothcomb is essential to get the nits out and a good hair conditioner will get rid of the knots. Despite symptoms of tickling, itching and scratching, head lice can sometimes be difficult to find. The answer is to indulge in a little “detection combing”. You apply to dry hair, enough hair conditioner to cover each hair from root to tip. Starting at the scalp and working carefully in sections, you comb the conditioner through the hair with a special lice comb. Head lice treatments can kill living lice and eggs, but they don’t protect people from getting head lice. Regular inspection, and detection, and persistence and perseverance with an effective product used appropriately are the keys to success. Of course, it helps if you can convince all the parents of your children’s classmates to put in place similar procedures. Head Lice fact cards are available at Merriwa Pharmacy.

The Cornish family of Cassilis featured prominently at the Merriwa District Australia Day Awards ceremony held at Cassilis Bowling Club. The event included an address by Australia Day Ambassador and prominent businesswoman Olya Booyar before a free barbeque lunch. Brian and Fiona Cornish shared Merriwa District Citizen of the Year honours while daughter Tegan was named Young Citizen of the Year. Merriwa District Australia Day Committee chairman and event MC Arthur Williams said Brian and Fiona contributed a great deal to the local community of Cassilis and the wider community of Merriwa. They are actively involved with Cassilis Pony Club, Cassilis P & C, Merriwa Central School Fete, Cassilis Rodeo Committee, Merriwa Relay for Life, and Dunedoo Polocrosse team, whilst Fiona is often at the forefront of community catering efforts for school functions such as the Year 12 formal at Merriwa. The couple successfully mobilised the community of Cassilis for the Merriwa Relay For Life, giving generously of their time to achieve remarkable results. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter has also been a focus for the pair, and they have been the driving force behind raising funds to donate to this cause. The Merriwa District Achiever of the Year Award was presented to talented and dedicated young equestrian Anastasia Martin, who overcame injury last year to compete at the Eastern and Northern Branch Australian Stock Horse (ASH) Championships plus the ASH National Youth Show where she successfully won or placed in each event, and was awarded the highest point scorer for her age bracket. Anastasia was named in the sub junior NSW state polocrosse team squad to play at the National championships in 2010 and has also amassed achievements out of the saddle, in fields including swimming, athletics, cross country and public speaking. Merriwa pastoral heritage and the importance of agriculture to the district’s economy and culture are celebrated with two unique awards each year. The Merriwa District Sustainable Agriculture award was presented to Mark and Di Killen, who have

demonstrating inventive ways to complement conventional farming enterprises with new ideas to make rural communities more sustainable and provide local employment with their well-known Papanui Free Range Eggs business. Local farmer Ian Medd was named Merriwa District Environmental Excellence Award winner for his thoughtful and progressive approach to farming, with examples including his no-till cropping that retains moisture and his superior cattle breeding management skills.

Council would like to send a big thanks to the 10 members of the Australia Day Committee for organising such a great day for the entire community to enjoy. DR BRONWYN STOKES Happy New Year, everyone, We have a new medical student, Mabel Leung, this week. She is part of the John Flynn programme and will be returning for two weeks every year for the next 3 years. This programme intends to allow medical students to be familiar with a particular rural practice with the hope that those students will be more likely to end up in a rural or regional area. It is important that she feels welcome.

This year we are going to begin our Gold sheet again. This will be produced once a month and will discuss different aspects of preventative health. It will be available at the surgery at the beginning of each month. As you know, I firmly believe that most preventative health is in your hands. A good lifestyle which will lead to good health outcomes is a choice you make. Everyone is capable of developing good health habits.

Remember, we still have our mental health nurse, Don Stewart available once a fortnight. There are limited appointments so make sure you book early and, of course keep the appointments you make.

HIDDEN VALLEY HOMESTEAD Michael & Penelope wish you all a very happy, healthy & prosperous New Year Hasn’t it been great to see the rain we all had over the Christmas period? Even though we only have a small lot of ‘pet’ animals we were very overjoyed to see the crisp brown grass we had change, nearly over night, to lush soft and green. However the rain was a bit of a disappoint-ment for our holiday makers.......we’ve had a very busy period with local family birthday’s parties, work Xmas parties and then our visit-ing guests from as far afield as Korea and the UK plus local Sydney & the Central Coast! On top of this we had our own small family gath-erings with our youngest daughter and son in law moving from the UK back to Australia to stay! Very busy and very exciting times. Our animal family has grown also with the birth of Babee and Sissie, two orphaned goats who have now started to acclimatise them-selves into the flock of strange animal collec-tion we have here! We’ve managed to freshly paint the front of the homestead & motel rooms at last....also painting the fence white as many may have seen on their drive past! Perhaps you have visitors arriving and need some local accommodation? Or perhaps you just feel like getting away for a weekend and don’t want to drive for hours? Currently we are offering: Motel Style ensuite rooms: all with quality linen & towelling Room No 1: Double & single beds (sleeps 3) Room No 2: Queen Bed ( sleeps 2) Room No 3: 1 x double bunk bed, 1 x single bed, 1 x baby bed and or cot (sleeps up to 5) Room No 4: 1 x Queen bed ( sleeps 2 plus

baby in baby bed) adjoining door into No 3 for families Self Catering Bunk House: All bedding & tow-elling ( or bring your own- with discount) Fully equipped Kitchen (everything for up to 15 people) and Open Plan Dining/Lounge 3 separate bedrooms 1 x Queen (sleeps 2) 1 x Double + 1 x baby bed (sleeps child up to 5) ( sleeps 3) 2 x double bunk beds (sleeps 4) 2 x sofa lounge/beds in living area (sleeps up to 4) Double share bathroom and separate laundry area For functions & parties: Hidden Valley Lounge/Dining area Dining room accommodates comfortably 8 to main table, 4 on separate round table with plate service. Buffet style; 17- 20 people Larger groups can be accommodated in the garden and BBQ area, with use of pool, out-door settings & games rooms fitted out with table tennis and games for children.(weather permitting) Due to our ‘remoteness’ bookings are essential with approx 1 weeks notice. Perhaps you would like to have a look at what we offer here? Why not give Penelope a call and organise your own private viewing of Hid-den Valley while discussing your needs for ac-commodation or meals. All the best,

WOOLBROOK INDUSTRIES You may recall that towards the end of 2009 I suggested a rather grim likely future for agriculture, this forecast largely based on its less than impressive record over most of the last two hundred odd years. I often get comments on these articles, including from my son John who gets a copy each week. I value them all, including those from John who has had much experience in many fields. This includes agriculture, mainly in Australia, Asia and Africa, but also other more exotic areas, for instance one where the company which employed him as Managing Director had the task of supervising the construction of about 800 kilometres of roads in China, another for the construction, and later the operation, of a string of criminal forensic laboratories in Pakistan. He commented that it is obviously very difficult, and often impossible, to forecast the future and offered a number of scenarios in which the future of agriculture could be much better than I feared. Of course he was correct, however it is rather like a budget, you gather as much relevant information as you can, consider the past, do your best to predict the future, and are usually not too surprised when it turns out rather differently than expected. Anyway, I present a couple of anecdotes which might serve to illustrate my point, and probably do it better than I can. You may recall a fairly recent article in the Land Newspaper describing a meeting at Murrumbo, near Bylong, between the new owner (from Condobolin) and various Government officials. This meeting was apropos the proposed carbon tax as it might apply to agriculture in general and methane producing cattle (to put it politely) in particular. The man from Condobolin presented all his books, showing his costs, sales, margins etc. and stated that the proposed carbon tax on his cattle would cost him at least $80,000.00 a year, a figure which seemed to me likely to be conservative. Having studied all these figures, one Government representative, who must have come down briefly from his ivory tower, commented: “How on earth do you people make any money?”, a comment which seemed to me to say it all.

Now what I might perhaps term a minor parable: A few years ago a friend of Rob’s, a successful and astute man, was interested in a local property which was to be auctioned. Rob had agreed to go with him and the agent on an inspection, but at the last moment Rob could not go, so I went in his place. Without going into detail it was a nice basalt cattle property of about 1100 acres, about 60% arable, and improved very close to the ultimate. I said little except when asked to do so, but I observed the potential buyer’s questions and reactions with interest. Those reactions were not expressed in words, but I could almost see the wheels turning furiously in his head as he questioned the agent. When we got back to town I was not surprised when he asked me if I could spare him time to have a cup of coffee so he could discuss the morning with me. He led off by reminding me that, while he was interested in a rural property as a retreat from the city, it would have to be a business proposition and that he could afford whatever was necessary, within reason. Very briefly, the following conversation then took place. HE: “The agent said I would be likely to gross about $125,000 a year from that property. Would you agree?” I: “Yes, more or less over the years depending on seasons. I expect it is probably close enough for your purposes” HE: “The agent says it is likely to sell for about $1.25 million. Do you agree?” I: “Yes, that figure also is probably close enough for your purposes” (In fact, it went for more). HE: “Max, I value my money at around 6% or more. It seems that on the suggested figures, and after stocking it and providing a vehicle, machinery and so on, I would be up for at least a hundred thousand a year just to cover my money!! How could I also expect to cover wages, fuel, depreciation etc., and even make a profit? Do you agree with my calculations?” I: “Yes, roughly speaking I do”. HE: “Max, why on earth do you people do it!!??” I: “Well, sometimes I wonder myself. However, rather than ask me, why don’t you ask some of your city friends because there are quite a few who are buying in at those prices and helping keep land prices up. Here are two further comments. The first is that most of us like life in the bush and, speaking as someone who

has had much experience of both, bush life leaves city life for dead. The second is that if ever land prices fall to their true economic value the banks’ security will be gutted, and we will have the mother of all crashes in both the city and the bush”. He thanked me and went away commenting soberly that he would put the money into a block of flats which would give him a reasonable return, and, as a bonus, he would not have to lie awake at nights worrying about droughts, floods, bushfires, disease and all the other problems which he had heard often plagued those in the bush.

HUNTER CENTRAL RIVER CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

Healthy soils for sustainable farms

Our soils are one of our most precious natural resources, and are essential for food production and biodiversity.

The Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is currently offering landholders in Merriwa and surrounding areas the chance to improve their knowledge about the capacity of their soils and how to improve their soil health and profitability.

The Soil Health for Sustainable Farms course is presented by the NSW Department of Industry and Investment and is led by District Agronomists Neil Griffiths and Lester McCormick.

With access to the latest research and developments in soil physical, chemical and biological properties, as well as soil management techniques, Neil and Lester are well-placed to help landholders understand

and make the most of their soils, while also learning how to minimise impacts on their local catchments.

Both Neil and Lester have a broad knowledge across all aspects of soil science. Neil has a special interest in organic fertilisers and minimising nutrient run-off, while Lester has extensive knowledge of groundcover management and grazing, and biological health.

The usual cost of the course is $1000 per property but the CMA is subsidising the costs to allow landholders to attend the three-day course for just $100 per property.

There are places for just 15 properties (with two people from each property able to attend) and the courses will be run in the first quarter of 2010. Contact Steve Eccles at the CMA’s Muswellbrook office on 6542 4421 to register or find out more.

TRINITY MARKETS Hello to everyone from Trinity Markets, and a Happy New Year to you all. Perhaps 2010 will be a bit like our little shop - you never know what treasures you’ll find if you look carefully! Hope you caught our Australia Day window, it did raise some comment (mostly positive . .). Many thanks to those good people who lent their flags etc., we will have them back to you shortly. Congratulations to Phyllis Bevan, the winner of TM’s monthly meat raffle drawn on Friday January 29. Phyllis, please call in to Trinity Markets and collect your Max’s Country Cuts voucher. Enjoy! Many thanks to Max for his continued support. Have you seen Trinity Markets’ new book section? Volunteers have given lots of their time and energy bringing the book collection up to date, and displaying it so the type of book you’re looking for is easier to locate. Adult books are grouped in Romance/ Family, Adventure/ Thriller, Documentary and Spiritual; and in our new young person’s bookcase we have Read To Me for the littlies, and Junior/ Teen sections. Now, to make our book nook complete, we need a nice little pre-loved mat to go on the floor - any offers? Thank you so much to all the wonderful people who have donated their goods to Trinity Markets over the holidays. Our volunteers have been working hard sorting everything so the donations can benefit as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.

Everything from clothing to toys, sportsgoods, linen, books and nick-nacks has come in - but you have to be quick, goodies are often snapped up as soon as they hit the shelves! Don’t forget to check out our cassette, video and DVD display, for that hard-to-find collectable item. If there are things taking up room at your place, and you’ve given up expecting to use them, why not let Trinity Markets recycle them? You’re welcome to leave your donation in our special green wheelie bin, located at the back of the shop. Or, if you’re down town any morning from Tuesday to Saturday, pop in and our staff will be happy to accept your parcels. If you prefer to send your items away from Merriwa, the Samaritans bin is located in Bow Street in the grounds of Holy Trinity church, near the front fence. It all goes to a good cause. This week, Trinity Markets volunteers met on Tuesday to review our services and discuss some upgrades. Unfortunately this was after the Ringer deadline, so news from the meeting will be in next week’s Ringer. Don’t forget our motto, “Dress for Less”! See you soon - in summer Trinity Markets is open 9.00am to 12.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

MERRIWA TYRE AND SERVICE CENTRE

We are now dealers for BRP’s CAN-AM ATVS (Quads) Built Tough with Confidence. Can-Am Experience the Ultimate Ride With sheer grunt, reliability, safety and comfort, Outlander and Renegade ATV’s have been helping Aussie farmer’s battle droughts, flooding rains and plain old hard yakka. With industry leading levels of handling and strength the quads have won numerous awards from ATV of the year in the USA to three time winner of the punishing Dakar Rally. The Can-Am outlander quads feature quick Visco-Lok engagement, and inboard disc brakes and unique chassis design, to name just a few of the features that make CAM-AM the industry leader. Redesigned for quicker engagement, the Visco-Lok constantly monitors front wheel speed and, if it detects one wheel spinning faster than its mate, it progressively sends more power to the wheel with the better traction. And it does it all without the rider having to lift a finger. The continuous-construction steel surrounding spar technology frame provides more strength than the traditional tubular construction frames. This technology also provides a lower centre of gravity, ultimately leading to better handling. There are fewer welds, less material, and less weight. Outlander brakes are inboard to protect them from mud, rocks and other debris that can compromise braking The result? Crisper stopping ability. Better responsiveness. Now, BRP have announced the CAN-AM 3 year warranty program which signifies confidence in the CAN-AM brand and a commitment to the Australian
