Airport pick-up & temporary accommodation

Airport pick-up

If you have booked an airport pick-up service, you will be picked up by a REDY2GO representative. Please look out for REDY2GO's Black & Green vans. Further pick up information will be emailed to you ahead of your travel.

Upon your arrival at Sydney Airport, if in doubt, please call REDY2GO's Call Centre on 1300-2-46-669 (1300-2-GO-NOW). The Call Centre is open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

If you need to make a phone call, Sydney Airport staff should be able to assist you with making a free-of-charge phone call. Further assistance can be found at the Airport’s help desk.

Airport pick-up service is complimentary for Australia Awards students, however, if you are arriving with your family members they are required to pay separately.

What should I do if my flight details change?

If your flight details change, please contact the University of Sydney’s International Sponsorships Unit immediately: [email protected] and +61 402 969 006 (Amy Wan, Manager).

If you do not notify us that your flight details have changed, there may be no one to collect you at the airport and you may need to make your own way to your accommodation.

Unless you inform us in advance of your changed arrival, you will be liable for temporary accommodation payment from the original booking date.

It is also a good idea to contact your temporary accommodation as soon as possible to avoid cancellation of your booking.

The University of Sydney can book an airport pick-up and temporary accommodation for all Australia Awards scholars. To book either of these services, please complete the Booking Form attached to your pre-departure email.

How do I exchange money after I arrive?

The only currency accepted in Australia is Australian dollars (AUD). American dollars are not accepted. If you have American dollars with you upon arrival, you should change these at a currency exchange, or at a bank.

Currency exchange counters are available at the airport and also in the city. Most bank branches are open Monday to Friday only.

Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) are widely available in Sydney. If you do not have ATM access, please bring enough cash to last you a few days, particularly if you are arriving over the weekend.

Temporary accommodation

All temporary accommodation costs will need to be covered by you (including any accommodation costs for family members). Soon after you arrive in Sydney, you will have access to your Establishment Allowance to cover the cost of temporary accommodation. Please be advised that no refund will be given if you check-out of the pre-booked temporary accommodation early.

Where will I stay when I arrive?

We can arrange temporary stay for you and your family at our temporary accommodation provider, the Australian Sunrise Lodge, a budget hotel located in Newtown and about 20 minutes’ walk to the main campus. Unless otherwise instructed, we will make a standard booking on your behalf for a single room for 7 nights.

If you prefer to book a different room, or change the duration of stay, you must notify us prior to arrival. For further information about Australian Sunrise Lodge, please see the Booking Form attached to your pre-departure email.

Once your temporary accommodation booking has been made, you are responsible for all costs related to the accommodation and you will be required to pay the bill shortly after arrival.

When will I start receiving my contribution to living expenses (stipend)?

Your stipend, or Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE), payment will be calculated from the day you arrive in Australia, but no more than 14 days prior to your scholarship start date.

Stipend payments will be deposited into your Australian bank account once every 2 weeks in accordance with the University of Sydney’s pay day schedule. IMPORTANT: Depending on the day you arrive, your first stipend payment may not be in your bank account until 1-3 weeks after your arrival. Therefore, it is important that you bring enough money to cover this period.

When will I receive my establishment allowance

You are entitled to $5000 Establishment Allowance as part of your Australia Awards scholarship. It may take a few days after your arrival before your Establishment allowance shows in your bank account. Therefore, it is important that you bring enough money to cover this period.

Arrival Information Sessions are compulsory. You must attend one once you arrive in Sydney.

Arrival information session

Please bring your passport, visa and boarding pass(es) to the session. The session will introduce you to the University’s International Sponsorships team and you will receive:

1. Arrival Pack, containing important University andAustralia Awards scholarship information;

2. Establishment Allowance information;

3. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) information.

You will also be taken to the Commonwealth Bank to set up an Australian bank account.

Arrival Information Sessions will take place at:

Student CentreLevel 3, Jane Foss Russell Building (entrance via City Road)

Arrival Information Session dates and times will be specified in your pre-departure email. University map will be sent to you as well.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

As you are an Australia Awards scholar, the University will pay for and organise your health cover. Your OSHC membership information will be given to you at the Arrival Information Session.

If your family is joining you in Australia as dependents on your student visa, you will need to organise their OSHC cover yourself: your Australia Awards scholarship only pays for your single student cover. You will have an option of upgrading your single student cover to family cover; or purchasing a separate cover for your family.

The University’s preferred OSHC provider is Allianz Global Assistance. This cover gives you exactly the same benefits as what Australians are entitled to under Medicare (the Australian public health system).

For more information about your OSHC cover, please check the Allianz website atallianzassistancehealth.com.au/en/student-visa-oshc

Bringing family with you

The Australian Government and the University of Sydney cannot provide any financial, or other, support for the dependents (spouse, children, etc.) travelling with you to Australia. DFAT recommends that you consider waiting at least 6 months before bringing your family over, as it will allow you to settle in, find suitable accommodation, complete your IAP and enrol in your University course, without the demands of looking after your family as well. Many students with dependents in Australia have indicated that they suffer from a heightened level of stress and anxiety, particularly if their family arrives with them.

If you intend to bring family members with you to Australia, please discuss this with your DFAT Australia Awards Post and let us know as we may need to provide documents necessary for the issuing of your family’s visas. You can also refer to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website www.homeaffairs.gov.au for the dependents visa application process.

Bringing school-age children to Sydney

If you have school age children, they will be required to attend school. New South Wales public school enrolment is free for dependents of Australia Awards scholars.

You will need to register your child with the NSW Department of Education International (DEI) by filling out Temporary Residents Program Application form for an Authority to Enrol: https://schoolsequella.det.nsw.edu.au/file/d8bb9a35-07b8-4bbb-bc73-ecdb552bf529/1/authority-to-enrol.pdf

You will need to attach proof of your child’s DEI registration to your application for your dependents’ visa.

Registering your children with DEI does not mean they are enrolled in a specific school: this will depend on where you will live in Sydney and you will be able to arrange this once you settle in. DEI registration can take some time, so you should begin this process as quickly as possible.

As an Australia Awards Scholar you are not required to pay the DEI $110 application fee. Also, as a Foreign Affairs sector student visa holder, you are not required to provide Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) document with your DEI application. Instead of a CoE, please upload a copy of your DFAT contract.

Please submit your DEI application directly to the Temporary Residents Program. For further information go to: https://www.deinternational.nsw.edu.au/study-options/study-programs/temporary-residents

If you are bringing young children to Australia

Child care in Australia is expensive and difficult to secure. You need to apply for placement for your children in advance, preferably before they arrive in Australia. To increase your chances of getting a place, register your name in as many child care centres as possible.

For more information about child care centres in Sydney, how they work and how much they cost, please visit the following websites:

− https://sydney.edu.au/students/childcare.html− www.careforkids.com.au

Please note: More information about bringing your family to Australia will be covered during your Introductory Academic Program (IAP).

Accommodation

You should wait until you arrive in Sydney before committing to any long term accommodation. By law, you must inspect a property in person before signing a lease contract (except for on-campus accommodation).

When you arrive in Sydney you will be given advice on finding permanent accommodation by the University’s International Sponsorships team, in conjunction with the University’s Accommodation Services unit.

Which area should I live in?

Sydney is a large, sprawling city, mostly well served by public transport. Deciding where to live and what type of accommodation would best suit you (and any dependents) are largely personal decisions.

When deciding on the location of your accommodation some of the main considerations should be safety and security, distance from

campus, access to public transport and services such as food shops and cultural connections to the area.

Generally, the closer the property is to the University’s main campus, the more expensive it may be. However, the further you live from the campus, the more money and time you will spend on your daily commute. It’s up to you to balance these factors.

You might find it helpful to know that many of our previous students have chosen to live in the suburbs listed in the table below.

Temporary accomodation

While the University’s International Sponsorships team can arrange temporary accommodation for you, you may also wish to arrange your own. Please read the University’s advice at sydney.edu.au/campus-life/accommodation/live-off-campus/emergency-and-short-term-housing.html

On-campus accommodation

The University offers a range of catered and self-catered on-campus accommodation options. Demand is high, so it’s important to apply as far ahead as possible. While contracts are generally for the academic year, single semester spaces are offered when there are vacancies.

Queen Mary BuildingQueen Mary Building offers single bedrooms in a residential hall with the latest in creature comforts, from sky lounges and sky gardens to communal kitchens, a theatre, gym and sound-proof music rooms.

Cost: From $328 per week, inclusive of 10GB internet and utilities, with shared bathroom and kitchen.

− sydney.edu.au/campus-life/accommodation/live-on-campus/camperdown-darlington/university-residences/queen-mary-building.html

International HouseInternational House offers twin-share study-bedrooms and en-suite or communal bathrooms in a college-style environment.

Cost: From $423 per week (including food). − sydney.edu.au/international-house

University TerracesUniversity Terraces consist of single and twin-shared bedrooms in 43 terraced houses located near the main campus. All bedrooms are fully furnished and residents share a living area.

Cost: From $220 per week. − sydney.edu.au/campus-life/accommodation/live-

on-campus/camperdown-darlington/university-residences/terraces.html

Darlington HouseDarlington House accommodate students in 12 male- or female-only self-contained apartments in a modern apartment building.

Cost: From $255 per week. − sydney.edu.au/campus-life/accommodation/live-

on-campus/camperdown-darlington/university-residences/darlington-house.html

Residential Colleges

The University has seven affiliated residential colleges on the Camperdown/Darlington campus, with furnished rooms and all meals provided. Apply directly to your chosen college.

Independently run student housing

Sydney University Village (SUV)SUV offers a range of self-catered apartments. You can apply for a studio, two, four or five bedroom apartments. Apply as early as possible.

Cost: from $328 − mystudentvillage.com/au/

sydney-university-village

UniLodge and UrbanestUniLodge (unilodge. com.au/sydney) and Urbanest (urbanest.com.au) also offer student housing.

Cost is from approximately $350 per week, self- catered with six-month contract options.

Living off-campus

Most of our students live off campus. There are many suburbs in Sydney that are an easy commute by public transport to the University. Please do not make any permanent arrangements for private accommodation prior to arrival, as it is important to inspect properties before committing to any tenancy agreements.

The University’s accommodation database, managed by Student Accommodation Services, lists hundreds of accommodation offers.

− sydney.studystays.com.au

You can find plenty of suitable accommodation on non-University affiliated websites, such as: bedssi.com, domain.com.au, flatmatefinders.com.au, gumtree.com.au, realestate.com.au

Please be alert to scams when searching for accommodation. Read our general tenancy advice here: sydney.edu.au/campus-life/accommodation/live-off-campus/house-hunting-tips.html

We have accepted scanned documents submitted by DFAT in support of your application for admission to the University. You should be prepared to provide original documents or original certified copies of your application supporting documents upon University’s request at any time.

The University conducts random document verifications each semester and you may be asked to provide your documents for authentication once you are in Sydney.

As such, you may wish to carry to Sydney with you the original, or original certified copies, of your educational documents.

In case you get selected for document verification and you do not have your documents with you in Sydney, the University will give you enough notice to have your documents couriered from home.

Documents submitted in a language other than English must be accompanied by a complete English translation. The University accepts translations to English made by an accredited translator with a government body, the Registrar of the issuing institution or registered University education Agents who are designated translators.

Detailed checking of supporting documents is an inherent element of the University’s admissions process and may involve contacting the original issuing authority, relevant tertiary admissions centre, organisation, or individual to verify documents.

A failure to provide documents on request, or the discovery of either fraudulent documents, or a misrepresentation of true circumstances in association with your application, may lead to the cancellation of your enrolment and scholarship.
