to our students (Including the foreign students) and our Management to have
an exposure to the Long-Lived New Year traditions. Further, our students, their
parents and well wishers also get an opportunity to enjoy the day in the Mount
Lavinia beach engaging in various cultural events.
This event shows the Auston commitment to preserve the traditional customs
and cultural values of this country.
May I take opportunity to thank our management and the organizing commit-
tee for their untiring eort and dedication to make this event success.
Wishing you a very Happy and Prosperous Sinhala & Hindu New Year.

FUTURE OF OUREDUCATION
Due to the District meritsystemmost of the studentsthosewho are qualiedenough also,do not get a
chance to enter ina government university.Because of this situationstudents are facing lot ofdiculties in continuingtheir higher studies.

Education in Sri Lanka has a long
history which dates back two
millennia and the Constitution of Sri
Lanka provide for education as a
fundamental right. The countrys
population has a literacy rate of 92%,
higher than that expected for a third
world country; it has the highest
literacy rate in South Asia and overall,
one of the highest literacy rates in Asia
This sector is another controversial
government sector which has the
tendency of being blamed by the
public regardless of the government
who is in the power. Education is one
of the basic rights of every child.Sri
Lanka is a country where all thechildren are eligible for free education
from the grade one up to higher
education in a government university
and the total cost is beard by the
government.
Basically there are three competitive
exams that students have to face,
grade ve scholarship exams,
G.C.E.Ordinary Level exam and G.C.E.
Advanced Level exam. Out of these
three exams G.C.E. Advanced Level
exam is the most competitive exam
which decides the university entrance.
From the total number of students
those who participate in G.C.E.
Advanced level exam only 10% is
eligible for the university admission.
This is mainly due to less number of
government universities in Sri Lanka.
Due to the District merit system most
of the students those who are
qualied enough also, do not get a
chance to enter in a government
university. Because of this situation
students are facing lot of diculties in
continuing their higher studies.
Out of them some students go abroad
and continue higher studies in foreign
universities. But in Sri Lankan context
most of the parents are not capable of
spending large amount of money for
foreign education while it includes
high accommodation cost and other
expenses. Out of the students those
who are going abroad, Most of themhave less tendency of coming back to
Sri Lanka while the job market is very
competitive and the salaries are low
comparing to the other countries.
Therefore all the money that -
-government is spending on these
students for their primary education
is a total loss while the government is
not getting anything in return.
In the case of local graduates, there
are some constraints as well. After
nishing their higher education they
are suering from unemployment.
Nowadays most of the graduates are
either unemployed or underem-
ployed. This is due to dierent
reasons, one is most of the students
qualications are not going align with
the current job requirements, lack of
English knowledge, poor computer
literacy, poor interpersonal skills and
the outdated syllabuses in govern-
ment universities, therefore these
students are not capable enough to
face the new challenges in current job
market.
Identifying these issues as a business
venture private sector has entered in
to the education sector introducing
several types of Higher Education
Institutes to provide higher
educational qualications like
Diplomas. Degrees and Masters
comparatively at a low cost than
studying in a foreign country.
Government has come up with the
idea of establishing private universi-
ties to overcome above problems and
this has already created a strong
protest from public, parents,
undergraduate students in govern-
ment universities and many more
pressure groups. The main argument
that they are bringing is this might
have a bad impact on local graduates
and it will further reduce their job
opportunities.
But on the other hand this will help to
reduce the unnecessary expenditure
of parents to provide their students a
foreign education. If the Government
can have proper agreements where
these universities agree to provide
substantial amount of their prot -
-share, then the government can
recover the cost that they have spent
on these students primary
education, instead of bearing the
total loss, of them being to a foreign
country for their higher studies .This
will be favourable for the economy,
because of this situation the money
wont be totally transferred to a
foreign country.
Also government should have a
proper way to allocate these
graduates and local graduates giving
them an equal opportunity to enter
to the job market .They can
introduce a proper system such as
they are appointing foreign Medical
Graduates and local medical
graduates. They can introduce the
same system for local graduates and
foreign graduates if they are continu-
ing to establish these private
universities. There should be a
system where the rst priority should
be given to the local graduates; if
foreign graduates are willing to
compete for the same job opportuni-
ties. Also government can introduce
a proper system to standardize both
the graduates. System like this will be
favourable for all the parties and
stake holders. What people should
understand is even if they dont
introduce private universities, thecompetition is already there which
has created by other private higher
educational institutes; but in that
case only private sector is enjoying
the benets.
All these issues should be considered
before implementing these kinds of
new strategies in any sector, but if
government can manage all these
things properly and introduce their
strategies in appropriate and
suitable way for our country, we can
have a brighter future in our
education system while beneting
all the parties.

You can be one of the90% people whoachieve their dreamsand become successin their personal, professional andsocial lives.
Achieving your goalsby using Future Mapping
We all have goals in our personal,
professional and social lives. When
we see the world, some people are
more successful than others. Whats the dierent between achievers
nd others? What are the
echniques those successful people
re using?
One of the techniques you can use
o achieve your goals is Future
Mapping which will describe by 10
teps in below. In the future
mapping technique you have to
write your goals in present tense as
f you have already achieved it.
Step 01: Thinking Big
You have to think big and you have
o develop an ambitious plan on
what you want to achieve with a
dead line.
Step 02: Writing it down
You have to write down your goal in
present tense and better if you can
ollect picture about what you
want.
Eg: If you want to build a house, you
an write it, draw it and collect
pictures of your dream house; even
you can collect photos of who will
tay at home with you.
Step 03: Involving others
You can share your dream with your
family members, partner or friends
and then it will be more real andenable to achieve with their support.
Step 04: Visualizing
You can visualize about your feelings
after achieving your goal.
Eg: If you are dreaming about building
your own house, you can visualize a
perfect house and you can sense how
the house would looks once it
decorated.
Step 05: Planning
You can prepare daily, weekly,
monthly and annual plan which broke
your goal in to small achievable steps.
Then you can focus step by steps.
Step 06: Overcoming Barriers
When we plan something, sometimes
with external we will not be able to
achieve those targets, and then we
have to plan that thing again and
again and overcome barriers.
Step 07: ReviewingYou have to review your goals and
adjust set dates and set standards.
Daily, weekly you have to review your
progress on your dream. Therefore
always monitor your time scales.
Step 08: Thinking Positively
You have to develop positive thinking
by repeating armations. You can get
your family members and friend help
too to be positive when your are
feeling bad.
Step 09: Focusing
You have to make sure that your other
projects and works are not taking you
away from your main priority.
Step 10: Succeeding
All ways you have to think that there is
a way to succeed and you have to
already plan how you are going to
celebrate it.
I believe if you use above ten steps to
achieve your goals, denitely you can
be one of the 90% people who achieve
their dreams and become success in
their personal, professional and social
lives.

Imagine life is agame in which you
are juggling ve
balls. The balls are
called work, family,
health, friends, and
integrity. And you're
keeping all of them
in the air. But one
day you nally
come to understand
that work is a rubber
ball. If you drop it,
it will bounce back.
The other four
balls are made of
glass. If you drop
one of these, itwill be irrevocably
scued, nicked,
perhaps even
shattered.

just okay for

Introduction:-
The iButton is a computer chip
enclosed in a 16mm thick stainless
steel can. Because of this unique and
durable container, up-to-date informa-
tion can travel with a person or object
anywhere they go. The steel iButton
can be mounted virtually anywhere
because it is rugged enough to
withstand harsh environments,
indoors or outdoors. It is small and
portable enough to attach to a key fob,
ring, watch, or other personal items,
and be used daily for applications such
as access control to buildings and
computers, asset management, and
various data logging tasks.
The Can and Grommet:-
An iButton uses its stainless steel 'can'
as an electronic communications
interface. Each can has a data contact,
called the 'lid', and a ground contact,
called the 'base'. Each of these contacts
is connected to the silicon chip inside.
The lid is the top of the can; the base
forms the sides and the bottom of the
can and includes a ange to simplify
attaching the button to just about
anything. The two contacts are
separated by a polypropylene
grommet.
The 1-Wire Interface:-
By simply touching the iButton to the
two contacts described above, you cancommunicate with it through our
1-Wire protocol. The 1-Wire interface
has two communication speeds:
standard mode at 16kbps, and
overdrive mode at 142kbps. For more
information, please see our applica-
tion note, Reading and Writing
iButtons via Serial Interfaces.
The Address:-
Each iButton has a unique and unalter-
able address laser etched onto its chip
inside the can. The address (e.g.
2700000095C33108) can be used as a
key or identier for each iButton.

http://www.maxim-ic.com
iButton Versions:-
The iButton product line now
comprises over 20 dierent products
with dierent functionality added to
the basic button. iButtons come in the
following varieties:
Address Only Memory
Real-Time Clock Secure
Data Loggers
How Do I Get Information Into andOut of the iButton?
Information is transferred between
your iButton and a PC with a momen-
tary contact at up to 142kbps. You
simply touch your iButton to a Blue
Dot receptor or other iButton probe,
which is connected to a PC. The Blue
Dot receptor is cabled to a 1-Wire
adapter that is attached to a spare PC
port. 1-Wire adapters exist for USB,
serial, and parallel ports. The Blue Dot
receptor and 1-Wire Adapter are
inexpensive.
The iButton is also the ultimate
information carrier for AutoID and
many portable applications. All the
latest handheld computers and PDAs
can communicate with iButtons.
How durable is the iButton?
The silicon chip within the iButton is
protected by the ultimate durable
material: stainless steel. You can drop
an iButton, step on it, or scratch it. TheiButton is wear-tested for 10-year
durability.
What Can I do with the iButton?
The iButton is ideal for any app lication
where information needs to travel with
a person or object. Axed to a key fob,
watch, or ring, an iButton can grant its
owner access to a building, a PC, a
piece of equipment, or a vehicle.
Attached to a work tote, it can measure
processes to improve eciency, such
as manufacturing, delivery, and
maintenance. Some iButton versions
can be used to store electronic cash for
small transactions, such as transit
systems, parking meters, and vending-
-machines. The iButton can also be
used as an electronic asset tag to store
information needed to keep track of
valuable capital equipment.
What Do I Need to Put Together an
iButton Application?
There are four components fundamen-
tal to any iButton application:
iButtons A host system: this can be a PC, a
laptop, a handheld computer, or an
embedded system.
A reader/writer device to get informa-
tion into and out of the button. This
can be the Blue Dot mentioned above,
a pen-style probe, or a handheld
device.
A layer of software to interface
iButtons to computers and produce
the desired information in the desired
format. Several software development
kits (SDKs) are downloadable from the
manufacturer at no charge. We also
offer 1-Wire Drivers for Microsoft
platforms, along with the OneWire-
Viewer, a demo application that can
read/write/exercise any iButton.
How Much Does it Cost to Build a
Simple iButton Application?
Under $50 (US$), plus your program-
ming time.
iButtons cost between $2 to $95 in
quantities of one; larger quantities arediscounted.
The Blue Dot receptor and 1-Wire
Adapter, which together make a
simple reader/writer device, cost
between $38 and $43.
The OneWireViewer demo software
and SDKs are free from the web site.
What are the Advantages of
iButtons Over Other Technologies?
When developing an iButton solution
for an application, you can considermany complementary technologies.
Bar codes, RFID tags, magnetic stripe,
prox, and smart cards are some of the
possibilities. Unlike bar codes and
magnetic stripe cards, most of the
iButtons can be read AND be written
to. In addition, the communication
rate and product breadth of iButtons
goes well beyond the simple memory
products typically available with RFID.
As for durability, the thin plastic of
smart cards is no match for the
strength of the stainless-steel-clad
iButton.

Shot in a Cue. Deepest Desire...
Role of Educationin Life
illiard is a type of shot in cue sport.-Ball billiards, especially, is one ofhose games that can be played after
little explanation. You can nd
illiards Tables in Hotels, Clubs,
Games Rooms, Pool Parlors and even
online Billiards games to play on the
nternet.
-Ball Billiards Game is played with 16
balls: one cue ball (The white ball),
even solid-colored ball, seven
triped balls and one Black Ball. The
ame of the 8-Ball Billiards game
omes from the fact that the Black
all is the important one, and its
umber is 8 - making it the 8-Ball.
n order to choose the breaker of the
-Ball Billiards Game, you and your
opponent both hit a ball as hard as
ou can to the end of the table.
Whoever Ball does go more further
tarts the billiards game. The rst
hot called the break- all balls are
organized in a triangle and your
mission is to shoot the cue ball to the
riangle and spread the balls on the
able. Then you should pick an object
ball (Solids or Stripes) and shoot
hem to the pockets. Once you haventered an object ball you must hit
only balls from this group (solid or
tripe), only after you nished all the
object balls you can go on the 8-Ball
Black Ball).
he player who pocketed the 8-Ball
wins the game. But the Billiards
Game is not that simple, there are
ome rules that make game harder,
or instance, if you pocket the Black
all and the cue ball at the same time,
ou lose the game. If you pocket the
lack Ball and you still have object
balls on the table, you lose. So be in
uned, if it is game that "Shot in a
Cue" then obviously it would be a
Win in a Cue".
-as evil and both are ingrained in his

righteousness and confront the
negative moral inuence exerted on
the part of industrialization and
materialistic foundations.
Education can mean any of the
following:
1. A process of teaching, trainingand learning, especially in schools or
colleges, to improve knowledge and
develop skills.
2. A particular kind of teaching or
training.
3. The institutions or people
involved in teaching and training.
4. The subject of study that deals
with how to teach.
5. An interesting experience that
teaches you something.

I nd that the fth one is a very
suitable statement as it proves that
education is not just something you
learn in a classroom or through
books but by experience too. Not
only has this every single religion in
the world talked about education
and educating children. Parents for
decades have misunderstood
education to be a classroom basedteaching or lecture by using books,
lecture notes, etc and at the end of
which their son daughter will get a
certicate stating they have been
qualied in a particular subject area,
etc. This should be changed and
parents should understand that just
knowledge from books cannot
educate their children and help them
be successful in life; other types of
education should also be looked into
for them to be successful.
Education is conceived to be able to
activate the potential abilities of
individuals. In fact, these potential
abilities and characteristics form the
underlying principles of all
educational systems. Education, if
conducted properly, can raise
individuals to higher values and
ethics. In contrast, the learner can be
devoid of values under corrupt
training. It is evident that humans are
innately predisposed to good as well-

What?Computer Ethics!
In recent times everybodyslife is being touched bycomputers at sometimeor the other.
Auston Institute is on the brink of
celebrating its second anniver-
sary. While wishing all the best
for the Institute, I grab this
opportunity as a faculty member
to express a rather important
concern related to moral valuesof computing practices in our
society.
Several decades ago Prof. Norbert
Wiener, a renowned mathematician
from MIT presented a solid founda-
tion for the eld of study now known
as computer ethics. Nevertheless, his
work was completely overlooked for
another few decades. However, since
the mid 1970s other computer
scientists and philosophers have
been attempting to redene the
focus.
Prof. Maner of Bowling Green State
University suggests that this eld of
study is one that examines the
ethical problems aggravated,
transformed or created by computer
technology (1980).
Prof. Deborah Johnson of University
of Virginia says that computer ethics
studies the way in which computerspose new versions of standard moral
problems and moral dilemmas and
worsen the old problems, forcing us
to apply ordinary moral norms in
unexplored realms (1985).
Prof. James Moor of Dartmouth
College says that it is independent of
any specic philosophers theory;
and it is compatible with a wide
variety of approaches to ethical
problem-solving. Moreover he saysthat it is a eld concerned with
policy vacuums and conceptual
muddles regarding the social and
ethical use of information technol-
ogy (1985).
08
Prof. Ward Bynum of Southern
Connecticut State University says that
computer ethics identies and
analyzes the impacts of information
technology on such social and human
values as health, wealth, work,
opportunity, freedom, democracy,
knowledge, privacy, security,
self-fulllment, etc (1989).
Prof. Donald Gotterbarn of East
Tennessee State University says that
computer ethics should be viewed as a
branch of professional ethics,
concerned primarily with standards of
good practice and codes of conduct
for computing professionals (1990).
Regardless of the assortment of
denitions, the dierent ways of
thinking certainly gives more value
and importance to the realm. Just
consider a service oriented company
that has recently acquired a new ERP
solution and selling customer prolesto direct marketing companies.
Provided that the ERP solution
facilitate such B2B channels, what
opinion would you have about the
developers and their client? Can you
believe that the developers are aware
of computer ethics? Providing a
broader understanding to such
problems is the primary objective of IT
ethics.
In recent times everybodys life is
being touched by computers at
sometime or the other. Thus, computer
ethics as a eld of study becomes
more challenging and essential. As fast
sophisticated hardware is been
introduced at a rate, the requirements
for more complex and large software
systems grow. Hence, the require-
ments for computer ethics are height-
ened. With the rapid growth of
broadband infrastructure, the ever
increasing numbers of internet users
and, enhanced mobile technologies, etc. the requirements for computer
ethics are even more believable. With
the increasing usage of the web, email
and numerous other internet related
communication technologies we -
-are in the prospect of a global
village. The age groups, gender and
ethnicity of the users of the above
technologies vary greatly. Therefore,
pretty much everybody is able to
envisage the need for computer
ethics. It is our responsibility to
educate the society or make the
society aware of the value ofadherence to the essence of
computer ethics. In addition to being
a good citizen and acting within the
law, we must train the responsible
individuals or professionals to look at
IT from an ethical point of view.
Furthermore, we must strive to bring
in the highest standard of computer
ethics to the society. The best way to
achieve this would be to incorporate
an introductory computer ethics
course to all academic programs of
Universities and, not limiting the
subject to IT related academic
programs. It is also practical to
provide a glimpse of the area to
school children as well.
Computer ethics is a vast eld of
ethical research and application.
Codes of ethics published by the
ACM, IEEE, BCS, ACM, etc. are
available on the web. IT practitioners
and the society in general would
benet by adapting them. However,
one would adapt such only if he or
she value ethics. We need more
teachers who are willing to teach
computer ethics and, IT
students/professionals who are
willing to learn the subject.

My Dear Grandfather
Every day is a special day
When life is spent with you
So I thought of telling you
About the wonders that you do
When me and Malla were both small
Wed come into your room
And youd tell us great stories
Then wed all play some games too
You would listen to our singing
And always clap at the end
And you would never forgetTo say goodnight at 9.00 p.m.
Each time we come home
A sweet smile youd give
How nice it is to see that smile
Each time you do
All these are just a few
Of what I have to say
Happy Birthday!
Now cut the cake
