What is the Junior Sailing Program?

The Junior Sailing Program is weekly sailing lessons for sailors ages 8-18 led by AYC’s coaching staff. There are 7 different practice groups: Opti I: Beginner, Opti II: Intermediate and Opti III: Advanced Racing, Laser I: Intermediate, Laser II: Advanced Racing, Flying Juniors: Doublehanded, and High School Sailing. Our Program is divided into primary Seasons: Spring, Summer, and Fall. Pre-Seasons are often offered for racers wanting to get a head start, making our program almost year round. Our focus is on training at home so AYC does not send coaches to out of town regattas. However, we have an active parent-run Roadrunner Fleet to help support you on the road!

Meet the Coaches: Coleman TerrellColeman Terrell has been coaching at Austin Yacht Club since June of 2015 and has been the Sailing Director since May of 2016. Coleman grew up in Boerne, Texas and began sailing at Canyon Lake at the age of 3 and coaching at the age of 16. He started racing Sunfish and J22’s in club series and around Texas, and sailing Lasers on the TSA youth circuit. Coleman attended Texas A&M University at Galveston and competed on the varsity sailing team there for 3 years, racing 420’s, FJ’s and J22’s. While living in Galveston, Coleman was a coach at Lakewood Yacht Club. During the summers in college, Coleman coached at the Upper Keys Sailing Club in Key Largo, Florida and at Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California where he coached CFJ’s at the Junior Olympics and CFJ Nationals. Coleman is a certified US Sailing Level 2 instructor. Currently, Coleman races his Sunfish on the Texas Sunfish Circuit whenever he gets a free weekend, and on Wednesday nights at AYC. This October, he will be racing in the 2018 Sunfish World Championships. When he’s not on the water or fixing boats, Coleman attends Concordia University Austin, pursuing a degree in elementary education.

The goal of this class is to introduce new sailors ages 8+ to the sport in a safe and fun environment. We spend time in the classroom learning concepts, terminology, and

procedures. On the water, we incorporate a mix of drills, games and exploration to build basic boat handling skills and confidence aboard our fleet of Optimists and Picos.

High School SailingHigh school sailing is open to any sailor currently in 8th-12th grades. This program is designed to create competitive teams from high schools in the Austin area. It is a great opportunity to get your friends involved with sailing and have a chance to travel around Texas competing against other high school students in the Dallas and Houston areas. AYC’s high school sailing is not considered a learn-to-sail program, however you do not need experience to join. If you are serious about jumping right into the middle of competitive sailing then we are here to help you! Similar to our Saturday FJ class, inexperienced sailors will be paired up with experienced skippers to expedite the learning process. The curriculum for high school sailing will be very similar to that of the Opti III and Laser II classes in that the focus is on advanced racing tactics, boat handling, and sail shape. In addition this class will cover short course racing strategy, skipper and crew teamwork and communication, and an in depth look at team racing. High school practice will combine with UT Sailing practice on Fridays.
