’19-’20 SEASON AUSTEN’S PRIDE JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS 1
JANE AUSTEN SIDE #1
START AUSTEN
Cassandra! Cassandra!!!
CASSANDRA
Jane?
AUSTEN
(Handing a letter out to CASSANDRA)
Here, dear Sister.
CASSANDRA
What on earth?
AUSTEN
Read!!!
CASSANDRA
“Dear Miss Austen, we are pleased to inform you that all copies of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ have been sold –” Jane!
AUSTEN
(Giddy with excitement)
CASSANDRA
“… Owing to its success we would like to consider more of your work for publication –” Oh, Jane! I am so proud of you. What are you going to send?
AUSTEN
Oh! What do I have? …
CASSANDRA
(Getting an idea)
I know! ‘First Impressions!’
’19-’20 SEASON AUSTEN’S PRIDE JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS 1
AUSTEN
What?
CASSANDRA
(She points at the manuscript on the table)
I started reading it again ...
AUSTEN
Again?! You must be joking. I couldn’t possibly.
CASSANDRA
Why not?
AUSTEN
(Reading)
“Mr. Bingley was once upon a time coming of age when he was tempted to look at Netherfield House.”
There. That’s why. It doesn’t even have a good opening line.
CASSANDRA
But you could rework it. Like you did with ‘Sense and Sensibility.’
AUSTEN
Good God, Cassandra! ‘Sense and Sensibility’ was … froth --
CASSANDRA
Froth?!
AUSTEN
Granted, good froth, but now I have a chance to write something significant.
CASSANDRA
Why can’t ‘First Impressions’ be significant?
AUSTEN
Because it’s a love story. Romantic novels aren’t taken seriously. And I don’t write love stories.
’19-’20 SEASON AUSTEN’S PRIDE JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS 1
CASSANDRA
Since when?
AUSTEN
I write ... commentaries about love.
CASSANDRA
Jane! --
AUSTEN
No, Cassandra. END
’19-’20 SEASON AUSTEN’S PRIDE JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS 2
JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS SIDE START
CASSANDRA Jane? Stop! You are going to break a string!
(AUSTEN stops playing. Music stops)
AUSTEN (Annoyed)
Mr. Darcy is being rather familiar with Elizabeth.
CASSANDRA (Not seeing the issue) … Alright …
AUSTEN He looks at her --
ELIZABETH (Rolling her eyes) Only to criticize.
AUSTEN -- with a steadfast gaze.
ELIZABETH Absence of mind.
CASSANDRA And?
AUSTEN Don’t you see? Mr. Darcy … is in love with her.
ELIZABETH Don’t be absurd!
CASSANDRA Isn’t that how the story goes?
AUSTEN It’s how the story went. It’s not realistic.
’19-’20 SEASON AUSTEN’S PRIDE JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS 2
CASSANDRA
But it’s romantic.
AUSTEN And I am not romantic!
CASSANDRA You were.
AUSTEN And look where that got me. Happy endings are – silly! Foolish! Unrealistic! I refuse to write one.
CASSANDRA But what is the alternative? Misery?
AUSTEN You are one to talk. You would have married for money.
CASSANDRA I said given the chance I would have been open to making a practical match. But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a good love story.
AUSTEN CASSANDRA Yes! Always longing for fantasies you can’t have. All agog over Mr. Darcy. He isn’t a hero. He is just another selfish man who enjoys the power of doing what he likes. In fact, Darcy divided Bingley from Jane.
(Trying to get a word in, speaking over AUSTEN)
Happy endings give people hope! Jane! Stop !!! Just stop it.
ELIZABETH
What?!
CASSANDRA When did you become so bitter? So selfish that you have no regard for the feelings of others?!
END
’19-’20 SEASON AUSTEN’S PRIDE
JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS 3
JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS SIDE
START
AUSTEN
(Chasing after him)
Tom -- What is it?
TOM
Jane. – My dear Miss Austen … In vain have I struggled, it will not do. I’m afraid the day is come
on which we are to flirt our last.
AUSTEN
(Shocked, where is this coming from?)
Tom !? --
TOM
We ought not involve ourselves in an affection which the want of fortune would make so very
imprudent.
AUSTEN
We don’t care about fortune.
TOM
Our families do. I cannot afford to marry, and you have no dowry.
AUSTEN
I’m not good enough?!
TOM
(Pulling a letter out of his jacket)
Please. Do me the honour of reading that letter.
AUSTEN
Tom! I love you.
TOM
Love? … Love, it seems, is not good enough …
END
’19-’20 SEASON AUSTEN’S PRIDE JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS 4
JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS SIDE START
MRS. GARDINER (To CASSANDRA) May we see the house, Mrs. Reynolds?
(CASSANDRA takes on the role of MRS. REYNOLDS, the Pemberley housekeeper and invites the GARDINERS and ELIZABETH into Pemberley)
CASSANDRA
“Of course! This is the portrait gallery.”
AUSTEN No, wait. (Looking at ELIZABETH) I need to read this part. (CASSANDRA hands AUSTEN the manuscript)
AUSTEN (as MRS. REYNOLDS) (Continues) “This is the portrait gallery.”
MR. GARDINER (Pointing out a portrait of Darcy) Is that Mr. Darcy?
AUSTEN (as MRS. REYNOLDS) “Yes, and very like him.”
MRS. GARDINER It is a handsome face.
AUSTEN (as MRS. REYNOLDS) (To ELIZABETH) “Do not you think him a very handsome gentleman, Ma’am?”
ELIZABETH (As if seeing him for the first time) Yes. Very handsome.
MR. GARDINER Is he much at Pemberley in the course of the year, Mrs. Reynolds?
’19-’20 SEASON AUSTEN’S PRIDE JANE AUSTEN/MRS.REYNOLDS 4
AUSTEN (as MRS. REYNOLDS)
“I daresay he may spend half his time here.”
MRS. GARDINER If he were to marry, he might spend more.
AUSTEN (as MRS. REYNOLDS) “Yes, Ma’am; but I do not know when that will be. I do not know who is good enough for him.”
ELIZABETH (Taken aback) It is very much to his credit that you should think so.
AUSTEN (as MRS. REYNOLDS) “I say no more than the truth. Some people call him proud; but I am sure I never saw anything of it. I have never had a cross word from him in my life, and I have been in service here since he was a child.”
MRS. GARDINER His father was an excellent man.
AUSTEN (as MRS. REYNOLDS) “Yes, Ma’am, and his son will be just like him. – Already he is just as generous to the poor.”
MR. GARDINER You are lucky to have such a master.
AUSTEN (as MRS. REYNOLDS) “Yes, sir, I know I am. There is not one of his tenants or servants but what will give him a good name.”
