President’s MessageAusblick Volume 9 No.4November 2006

Wow! Another year has passed and it is time once again to review the year’s accom-plishments and to solicit the direction of the membership in the selection of members for our Board of Directors.

It has been a record of attendance and number of events held, for the driver training group and while the general events throughout the year have been a bit disap-pointing, with a number of cancellations due to low turn out, the ones accomplished were well attended.

I want to thank all the directors for their time in advancing our club ideals of partici-pation and service. They have spent consid-erable time on club business and while I was able to participate much less than originally planned I knew in my heart that all was well and that all the needed things would be taken care of.

As we hold our Annual General Meeting, please think about what it is you want out of your club membership and help the Board of Directors by letting us know how we are do-ing in achieving those objectives. Each year we have an ambitious plan with events and activities intended to keep the membership engaged, with what we hope is something for all. We need to know how we are doing and while it is always nice to hear about the things that go well we need your input on things that don’t go so well too!

Your kind input and advice goes a long way towards keeping the club functioning as a place for you to share your experiences with the “ultimate driving machine” and learn more about its particular operational needs. From the technical advice of the mechanically able, the how to of concourse

detailing, to the driving position in the car to make the most of your abilities on the road, there is something for everyone over the course of the year.

Thank you all so much for your sup-port through the year, I hope to see you at our AGM where we can recap the financial performance of the club, do a little bragging about the past years accomplishments, share a cookie and coffee or two and hear from you about what we should do in the future.

As always, drive safely and manage your driving space to allow for the errors of others.

Wait a moment, isn’t that the wrong article.

Well, yes and no. The tag line does indicate it should have been for another issue, but....

The message Bob wrote didn’t get out to too many folks because v9n4 of Ausblick only went to PDF and only got there late.

...so, since the message contains good com-ments, we’re running it again in this issue.

Wow, here it is the end of 2006 already. We’ve recently had the AGM and have another successful year of club events behind us.

The road ahead looks great. Just the right amount of twisties to be fun.

Whether you are a recent member, or have been with the club since we started back in April of 1998 I hope you have found the club offers something for you.

It is after all a club about and for enthu-siasts and owners of the BMW marque.

We are currently busy working on events for 2007. The preliminary list of events is on the next page and already up on the web site. There will be more events and more details as we move forward.

Our club is doing well with a solid membership base, with lots of enthusiastic members.

I hope the info about future and past events in this issue provides you with enough of an overview of what your club has to offer.

I hope to see you at one or several of the many events we have planned so far for 2007.Rolf

Planning for 2007

Hi Tech = distractionThere was a German study not long ago

that pointed to the fact that too many things in a modern car detract from good driving. Can you believe that, they are saying that all that luxury and convenience can actually take the drivers mind off the task of driving and in so doing cause enough distraction to be a problem.

For those interested the report was from 2002, and the headline quote was: “High-Tech lullt Autofaher ein” [High-tech is lulling drivers to sleep] with an explanation for the 4% increase in German traffic fatalities over the last half year compared to a year prior. A traffic expert argues that modern cars are getting too comfortable, that the movement to smooth out road bumps and reduce engine and wind noise is causing drivers to lose sense of their speed and underestimate dangerous situations.

Perhaps I’m just an Old Fahrt, but I have to agree with that German study. Every time I’m out and about in traffic, it would seem folks are doing something other than concentrating on their driving.

Relying on technology can really bite you. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not against some of the great new advancements in technology in cars. ABS, stability and traction control are all great.

But now they want to add gadgets that will slow or stop the car for you when you get too close to the car in front of you. Just what we need, another electronic gadget to let mindless drivers be even more mindless.

Ever noticed how everyone is in such a hurry to get to the next stoplight? I’m always amazed at the seeming rush to get to the next light. I haven’t quite figured out the reason yet. There must be a reason though as it continues on every time I need to venture out and commute. The thing that puzzles me is that as I plod along at about the posted limit and trundle from one stop light to the other, most of the cars that were in such a rush to get to going are at the same light. That very same light that usually turns green at about the time I approach it while motoring along at the posted speed. I must be missing something, like an opportunity to sip my coffee, start another cell phone call, or whatever the others are doing while impatiently waiting at that next light.

Enough for today

You Can’t win if you didn’t enterIt pays to visit the forum

Perhaps you missed the posting. If you did, you probably didn’t enter the contest.

This year the International Counicl of BMW Clubs celebrated its 25th Anniversay, and to go with that they held a contest with several nice prizes for those that entered.

First prize was a weekend in Munich with an exclusive guided tour of the new BMW Museum including the flight and two nights for two people at the elegant DERAG Hotel Karl Theodor

The prize was won by a Canadian, a member of the BMW Club of Regina.

I know, you are going to tell us you didn’t know about this, or you would have entered. Well, it was posted in the news sec-tion of the club forum back in May. I know several folks found the link and went and entered.

How to contact a DirectorYour best bet is to catch them in their native environment at a club event. But of course that would mean you too would have to attend an event, which of course is not a bad thing to do.The other option would be to contact them by email. They do respond to emails about club related things, but not to SPAM and such.

News BitsMeet the New Board of DirectorsWho are they and what do they do?

Contrary to popular myths, the directors are just ordinary BMW enthusiasts much like the rest of the 457 members in the club.

They come from a variety of back-grounds, have a variety of cars, but all share the same thing, and enthusiasm for the marque, and a desire to share that with others.

Somewhere along the line each of them got caught up in the club, and now they help organize events and tend to the more mundane operations needed to make the club run and operate smoothly.

Next time you are at an event feel free to contact a director. We have a wide selection to choose from, and we’re sure one of them will share some of the same interests you do. If not, speak up.

2007 Driver Training Program Info

Our BMW Club Driver Training program is a graduated program operated for the club by the professionals at Driving Unlimited. Car Control is our entry level course and is open to all. Participation in Road Skills requires the successful completion of a Car Control Course.

Reasons to take BMW Club Driver TrainingOur club Driver Training program is about learn-ing and practicing skills that are essential to safe driving. The role vision plays, panic stops, and emergency maneuver control are all skills we work on.Consider this quote by a student: “I learned to look farther ahead, anticipate more, run “what if” scenarios through my head, and acquired practical skills as well, such as how to steer a car under full ABS braking (which, as most of us know, takes exaggerated wheel inputs).”And it is all done in a fun controlled safe envi-ronment with qualified instructors. We run a graduated program, and you need to complete a Car Control course before moving on to the more challenging Road Skills program.

2006 Annual General Meeting - Minutes

BMW Car Club of British ColumbiaAnnual General MeetingCoquitlam Room, Best Western Coquitlam Inn, 319 North Road, Coquitlam BCNovember 18, 2006

1. Call To OrderPresident Bob Balbirnie called the meet-

ing to order at 2:05 pm.2. Proof of Notice of Meeting or Waiver of Notice Determination of Quorum

Notice was posted in v9n3 of Ausblick that had been mailed to members in September, additional notices had been sent to all members by email, and notices were posted on the club web site. It was deter-mined sufficient eligible club members were present to satisfy the quorum requirement of the bylaws, and as such the meeting was competent to proceed.3. Approval of previous AGM Minutes

Bob asked for and received a motion to approve the minutes of the previous 2005 AGM as posted. M.S.C. by the members pres-ent.4. Report on Previous Year

(2006 Events and activities) including Finance recap

President Bob Balbirnie presented and narrated a Power Point presentation that provided an overview of the status of our Club during 2006, including various event highlights.

The BMW Car Club of BC hosted 26 events in 2006, which included a variety of drives day trips, the annual Concours and a variety of other events that were all well attended. Bob reported the current Club membership is 457 members (largest in Canada) and that the Club continues to have a varied and busy slate of events that is the envy of many other clubs. During the slides about membership, various comments on our club growth, retention of members, and ways to get members to participate were brought up.

During the presentation slides were shown with overview information on club finances. Treasurer Richard Shore added the

additional information including the cur-rent bank balances, and an explanation of some of the numbers shown on the slides.

After the Nov 19 school costs are subtracted we will have a cash balance of $9402.35 of which $4094.25 is kept in sav-ings as a reserve to cover multi year prepaid memberships. Richard noted this was a good cash position as we had also purchased a new card printer and paid for a stock of tee shirts in advance.

The club is in a healthy financial situation and active in events and member growth, and continues to serve its members well.

In addition to the review of past events, members were advised of some key future events we will be involved with, including the fact the BMW Club of Canada and our club were successful in their bid to host the International Council of BMW Clubs the 2008 International Council meeting in Vancouver. Jim Westmacott is leading the or-ganization of this, along with support from the rest of the directors. Jim was not able to be at the meeting, but Rolf offered a quick overview of what an International Council meeting is about. Representatives from BMW Mobile Tradition and about 25 umbrella clubs will attend such a meeting, and it will involve support from BMW Group Canada, the BMW Club of Canada, and BMW Mobile Tradition as well as the IC office in Munich.

There will be many ways for our club and members to be involved, and we look forward to this being a positive event that will recognize our club since 2008 will mark our 10th anniversary year.

During the review of events, questions raised by members including positive com-ments and feedback were answered to every-one’s satisfaction. As well positive feedback and comments, were offered by the members present, with the general consensus being that members are happy with the club.

It was noted that in 2006 we did well in filling all our Driver Training sessions, with

188 participants in 8 events hosted in 2006. We have had 964 students through or Driver Training program since we started it in April 1999. Many come as the result of recom-mendations of members and prior partici-pants who talk about the program to friends and family.

A lively discussion ensued about some of the tour type event options in particular with respect to some like the Wine Tour, which got cancelled due to poor sign up. The consensus was that some events might only be appropriate every other year.

Bob thanked the members for their participation, as it is the members that make the club what it is.

A handout version of the presentation is available to club members as a PDF file on request, and a copy will be posted in the AGM section as well along with these minutes5. Election of Directors

It was then noted that Nathalie Davidson withdrew her ability to stand for reelection just prior to the AGM for personal reasons. We accepted her resignation with regret, and would like to thank her for the contributions she made while on the board.

Stephen Nemeth of the nominating committee then made the recommendation and motion to the members that the slate of candidates be considered for acceptance by acclamation to make a total of 12 directors for 2006.

As we were preparing to accept this motion, Doug Temlett indicated he’d offer to help on the board if needed. Since the op-portunity was there, and Nathalie’s position would other wise go unfilled, it was decided to ask Doug if he would accept the nomi-nation now. He did, and so it was moved seconded and carried by the members pres-ent to accept the slate of directors plus Doug, and the new directors were unanimously accepted and welcomed.

Open Floor Q&A session for membersFollowing the acceptance of the new

directors to the board, Bob opened the floor to additional questions and comments by the members present, but it appeared that most questions had been dealt with directly during the events review PowerPoint presentation.Adjournment:

There being no other business, it was moved and seconded to adjourn the meeting

The AGM was adjourned at 3:40pm.

How many times have you been talk-ing with car buddies and begun reminisc-ing about a car you’d formerly owned that brought the comment, “I sure wish I hadn’t let that one get away from me,” or “I’d love to have that car back,” or “Sure wish I hadn’t had to sell that one.”? It seems I’ve been down that track a number of times in conversations with fellow car crazies. I’ve also seen that theme on a number of occasions in car magazines, particularly in letters to the editor.

I’ve owned 45 cars over about that many years and have a mental list of the “top five” I’d like to have back, particularly if they could be reacquired in approximately the same condition as when they left. Some of them are old enough (a ’72 Datsun 240Z that I bought new, for example) that even if I could locate them, assuming they’d avoided the crusher or a terminal case of tinworm, they would likely be in such tired condition that I’d just shake my head and walk on by.

One of my top five, however, is a ’95 BMW 318ti that I bought new. It was my fifth BMW. The ones that preceded it were two 525’s, a 635 CSi, and a 325ix. The 318 actually, had about 5K miles on it when I acquired it, as it was a BMW NA executive’s car from their New Jersey office. It’s red over black, was fully optioned, including a car phone (analog—how quaint), and may have had an interior treatment ordered through BMW Individual, although I’m not sure because I don’t think that was possible then, but I suppose if you have connec-tions..... It’s just that I’ve never seen another interior like it in a 318ti. It has handsome black patterned cloth seat inserts and door panels, and a burled wood kit on the dash, door panels, and shift lever surround.

Anyway, I loved that odd looking little car, having had some good road trips and track days in it. Although it had only 138 ponies under the hood, it was fun to see how well it could keep up with the six cylinder cars of that era at the track, particularly in the twisties. I had to sell it in order to get what many then, and now, think of as another odd looking little car—my red ’99 M Coupe (notice a pattern here?). I sold the 318 to a good friend, Bill, in Rochester, Minnesota, where I then lived. He always kept it garaged and mostly drove it only on nice days, as they had had a stable of three additional, more ordinary vehicles that were their daily drivers.

About four years ago, I started thinking about buying the car back if Bill were ever interested in selling. I mentioned to him on more than one occasion that I’d sure appreciate the right of first refusal if it ever went on the block. His response was always, “I love that car. I don’t think I’ll be selling it.” So, I’d mentally shrug my shoulders and forget about it—until I’d see or talk to Bill again and remind him of my interest in reacquiring the car.

We moved to Bellingham, WA, in the spring of 2004, and I’d pretty much forgot-ten about the ti until one Saturday this fall when I got a newsy e-mail from Bill. As a trailing thought at the end of the note he said, “I’m thinking of selling the BMW. It still only has 67K on the clock and a new set of Michelin’s, but it’s time to move on. Are you still interested?”

I called him immediately. After having done my homework on what the car was worth, I offered him $500 over the high end of Kelly Blue Book’s price. For a car in such excellent condition, that still seemed like a bargain. I knew its condition, as I’d driven

the car a year before during a trip back to Rochester. Its service history was also fully documented. He was sorry to hear that it wasn’t worth more, as it was still in perfect shape. He wasn’t sure he wanted to let it go for what I’d offered, but he trusted my re-search on the price. He isn’t really a car guy and knows that I’m heavily afflicted with the disease and would know its market value. He wanted to think it over for a day and said he’d call back on Sunday. That was a long day for me, but he finally called back in the evening, said he’d done a little mourning, and had a slightly higher counter offer due to the $750 worth of new tires that had less than a thousand miles on them.

I quickly accepted his counter and started making travel arrangements.

There seemed to be three “signs” that this should be happening. The first, and almost a miracle to me, was that I got a frequent flyer ticket to Rochester that left SeaTac at 10:20 the next Saturday morning and got into Rochester at 6:00 that evening. My past experience with trying to use f/f miles was that they might be able to find me a seat at 3:00am on the second Tuesday of National Hot Dog Week--if I booked eight months in advance.

The second sign was that I had men-tioned to my wife a couple of times over the past several months that I was feeling the need for a road trip. The drive back from Rochester was 1,830 miles on northern Interstates and certainly fulfilled that need. A big bonus was that it happened during the first week in October, which allowed me to catch the peak of fall color in Montana and Idaho. That included the stretch from a bit east of Bozeman, MT, and on west to Coeur d’Alene, ID, which is one of the most scenic Interstate routes I’ve seen. To top it off, the

third day of that trip was my birthday, and I couldn’t think of a better way to be spending it. Happy birthday to me.

The final sign was that only two days before I received Bill’s e-mail, we had a parking area in front of our house complet-ed. That was a project that had needed doing since we’d moved in. So now I had a place to park my business use SUV, while the garage could house the M Coupe and my wife’s 4Runner. The 318ti could have the driveway.

They say “You can never go back,” but in some small way I feel like I have. I not only reclaimed one of my top five, but it was in almost the same condition as when I’d sold it seven years ago. Those opportunities don’t come up often, if ever, so I feel very fortunate to have been in a position to take advantage of it. If one BMW is good, surely two is better. Life is good.

Even though Dale lives south of the border, he has been an active member in our club attend-ing numerous events. You may have seen his wonderful Imola Red M Coupe at the Concours or other events. Thanks Dale for the story and photos

Members receive a pair of window decals with their membership package, and we encourage members to display the decals to show that you are a club member. The self cling decals are easy to apply from the inside of your window, and look great when trimmed and placed in a visible side window location.Additonal or replacement decals should you need them, can be obtained from member ser-vices for a nominal fee.

BMW Club name Tags and Lapel PinsWe have two new items that will be available to members. We now have a card printer that can do high quality name tags. We also have a sup-ply of lapel pins.Once we have a lanyard supply located, we’ll of-fer members the option to purchase permanent name tags.
