EVALUATION

This brief has proven both exciting and difficult. The open-ended questions exhausted my mind aswell as opened up the opportunity for greater idea generation, thus challenge my creative ability to the fullest. Although most of the questions are simple and fairly self explanatory I found I struggled quite alot to begin with. As I began to pick up pace with my work I realised that my struggle was due to my own personal expectation of what I like to see in pieces of design work. I came to realise that I find it hard to create work if it hasn’t got good meaning behind it or tell some kind of story. I found that the connection between the question and my work had to be clever and clearly linked before i became satisfied. Which consequently slowed me down but also exercised my mind.

One of the questions that I most enjoyed was question 4 (Position in the family). My initial idea was to answer this question by creating info graphics to show a representation of my position. However I wasn’t satisfied as I felt that I needed to come away for the computer and be a bit more hands on. The idea of creating a concertina came from through research into paper folding and crafts. The lack of limitations with this brief allowed me to take my final outcomes further which in this case the final outcome was a book.

Another question which I enjoyed was the paper aeroplane I took this brief further by also lazer cutting a large paper aeroplane which displayed my slogan.

Question 32 (Make a film of yourself being an animal) was one that I most enjoyed. At first I fort it was a ridiculous question, however soon liked the idea of taking design from paper and computer to the face.

A piece of which with Im not so satisfied with is the in question what are your hobbies. i created a moving image piece to display the list of hobbies. The final outcome didnt turn out as good as i wanted. I think that this was also due to my beginners knowledge of flash.

The flexible time constraints allowed me to try out new printing processes such as letterpress and laser cutting. It also allowed me to attend workshops on things such as after effects and photography, which helped in the generation of some of the moving images pieces within this portfolio.

Some of the studio led workshops had heavy influence the direction that my work took.As both units (studio and independent practice) are combine ,I found that I didn’t initially approach the units separately .With all my outcomes, I found that they could be extended further which is something i plan on doing after.

This brief has helped me to understand my strengths and weaknesses and has also helped me to work upon my time management.

When reflecting back on this semester I wish that I had come out of my mental block earlier. However I feel that I have been more hands on with my approach to briefs. I feel that besides circumstances that where out of my hands , me being a perfectionist also held me back . However im content with most outcomes but feels that there is room for improvement.
