Temple Corporate Challenge is Back!The Temple Corporate Challenge isnow accepting company registra-tions. The Corporate Challenge eventsbegin September 14. Each year more and more new facesenter the Scott and White medical facili-ties. These new residents come from allover the United States to begin theircareer in the medical industry. With anew career also comes a new hometown. The Temple Chamber wanted towelcome all of the new faces by intro-ducing them to businesses around BellCounty at the “We’re Temple” BusinessShowcase.

The event was held at the HiltonBallroom and an array of businesses dis-played their services and products. Thevariety of business included restaurants,real estate companies, dentist offices,health and fitness clubs and gift/bou-

tique shops. The residents receivedgoody bags, raffle gifts and prizes. Theevening was complete with refresh-ments and hors d’ourves.

The sentiments were consistentthroughout the room; the residents werethrilled with the event. Due to theirbusy schedules, very few are able to getout and explore the various businessesin Temple. One resident moved fromNew Orleans over a year ago, and wasnot aware of the services and businessesavailable throughout the city. Others saidthey were grateful for the event to helpfamiliarize them with local businesses.

But if you’re also new to the area,don’t worry, we have something just foryou! On Saturday, September 22, theChamber will host “We’re Central Texas”,

a business to consumer showcase at theMayborn Convention Center. This eventis open to the public to present localbusinesses and their products to thecommunity. Early August is a time for book lovers to cleantheir bookshelves and donate books for theupcoming Friends of the Temple Public LibraryLabor Day Used Book sale. It’s also a time tojoin or renew membership in the Friendsorganization which sponsors the popular usedbook sales each year to raise funds for thelibrary. The 27th annual Labor Day Used Book Sale isset for Aug. 29 – Sept. 1 at the Temple PublicLibrary. Thousands of books presorted intomore than 90 categories will be offered at bar-gain prices.All types of paperbacks and hardback bookshave been donated for the sale, and most bookswill be sold for $2 or less. News From Temple CollegeAs with most people, the month ofAugust means one thing at TempleCollege (TC), Back to School. Thatbeing said, TC has several eventscoming up.

First and foremost, classesat TC begin on Monday, Aug. 27.Registration will continue untilWednesday, Aug. 15, so there is stilltime to register.

As in years past, the weekbefore the start of class (Aug. 20-24) will be TC’s annual ZeroWeek.ZeroWeek is a week-long eventdesigned to help new and return-ing students feel at home on cam-pus prior to the start of school.New to this year’s ZeroWeek activi-ties is a New Student Orientationsession that is mandatory for stu-dents attending TC for the firsttime. More information aboutZeroWeek can be found by scan-ning the QR code in this article.

Also included as part of theZeroWeek festivities are grand open-ing celebrations for the simulationcenter addition to the HealthSciences Center (HSC) and themuch anticipated rehearsal halladdition to the Mary Alice MarshallPerforming Arts Center (PAC). Bothwere funded as part of the $13 mil-

lion bond package passed by votesin 2010. The celebration begins inthe HSC at 3:30 p.m. and then willmove to the PAC at 5 p.m. Bothgrand openings are open to the pub-

lic. Tours of the facilities as well asrefreshment will be available.

Finally, for those who arelooking to enhance their skills, butare not necessarily interested ingoing back to school, the TempleCollege Business and CommunityEducation Division has some cours-es that might be of interest. Forexample, Texas Notary Law and

Procedure Workshop, Beginner andIntermediate MS Access, HRManagement Academy, PayrollProfessional Academy, and an IRSworkshop for Tax-Exempt

Clarence Martin Gym to Receive HistoricMarker

(Temple) – The Temple HistoricPreservation Committee will hold areception honoring Clarence MartinGym as the latest recipient of aTemple Historic Marker. The receptionwill be held Wednesday, August 8,2012, at 3:30 p.m. at Clarence MartinGym (102 West Elm Avenue).The Clarence Martin Gym was origi-nally constructed in 1935. The gymwas used by the Temple SchoolDistrict until around 1964 as the highschool gymnasium. In 1965, the highschool was demolished and the Cityof Temple Parks and Leisure ServicesDepartment acquired the gymnasium.The department offices were housedthere until the mid 1980’s when newoffices were constructed at WilsonPark. Currently, the building is beingused for a variety of recreation pro-grams and recently received a new

floor. For more information about thegym’s activities and rental informa-tion, please contact Tracy Klusacek at298-5582. The Historic Marker Program wasdesigned to recognize historically sig-nificant structures within the city,while encouraging preservation andrestoration. In order for a property tobe considered for a Temple HistoricMarker, the property owner must fillout an application and submit it withsupporting documentation to theHistoric Preservation Committee.There is a small application fee, whichis currently half-off for the summermonths. Military Affairs Committee Connects With‘The Great Place’

Building a good strong relationshipwith our military neighbors at FortHood is the focus of the TempleChamber of Commerce MilitaryAffairs Committee.

The committee worksthroughout the year to support themilitary and welcome the soldiers andtheir families to Central Texas byattending events and ceremonies andparticipating in special events. JimGranfor serves as chairman and GaryJanicek is co-chair.

Known as “The Great Place,”Fort Hood is home to almost 65,000soldiers and family members.Although many live on base or inKilleen, thousands more live in nearbycommunities including Temple andare very much a part of life in CentralTexas.

On Aug. 9 Chamber represen-tatives will travel to Fort Hood to par-ticipate in Hood Howdy, a welcomeevent to introduce incoming militaryfamilies to businesses, resources and

communities in the Central Texasarea. About 3,000 soldiers and familymembers are expected to attend thisevent.

The annual Military AffairsLuncheon on Sept. 11 will bring mili-tary guests from Fort Hood to Templeto show appreciation for their serviceto our community and our nation.

The committee also coordi-nates the Adopt-A-Unit program whichmatches schools, community organiza-tions and businesses with military

units. The Chamber’s adopted unitsare the 13th Sustainment Command(Expeditionary) and the 1st MedicalBrigade.

New Members Support Military Community

The National Mounted WarfareFoundation and The Army Marathonare new Chamber members support-ing the military and connecting themilitary and civilian communities.

The National MountedWarfare Foundation is a non-profitorganization formed for the purposeof building the National Museum ofMounted Warfare and Soldier Centerto be located adjacent to Fort Hood,just outside of the installation’s securi-ty perimeter for easy access for mili-tary and civilian visitors.

The proposed museum willprovide a unique educational experi-ence designed to preserve and inter-pret the stories of mounted warfaresoldiers and units that have serve FortHood and worldwide, and to promotethe history, values and heritage of

Killeen and Central Texas.The main building will be an

85,000 – 100,000- square-foot struc-ture with outdoor areas including vin-tage military vehicle walking trails,children’s play area, park, memorialsand monuments.

Now it its initial phase toraise the estimated $130 million need-ed to complete the project, the pro-jected timeline calls for constructionto begin in 2016, with completionand opening of the museum in 2019.Forecasters predict 265,000 visitorsper year.

The project will have a hugeeconomic impact in Central Texaswith an estimated 550 constructionjobs and $49 million in constructioncosts; 60 permanent new jobs with$4.5 million sustained economic

impact after opening.The National Mounted

The Army Marathon is a newnon-profit organization planning thefirst ever Army Marathon to raisemoney for qualified veterans’ chari-ties.

The inaugural event to honorsoldiers and national guardsmen isscheduled for April 19, 2013. The 26.2mile run from Killeen to Temple willattract thousands of military and civil-

ian runners from across the country.Future events will be held on theweekend nearest to April 19 which isthe date of the battle of Lexingtonand Concord which started theAmerican Revolution. Local advisorsinclude LTG Don Jones and LTG DavePalmer.
