AUGUSTUS CAESAR THE PAX ROMANA THE FALL OF ROME THE LATE ROMAN EMPIRE Slide 2 WHAT HAPPENED AFTER CAESAR? Remember after Caesar was murdered his nephew Octavian became dictator. Octavian was so popular that he was made the first emperor of Rome. AUGUSTUS (Octavian) the first emperor of Rome Slide 3 WHAT DID AUGUSTUS DO FOR ROME? CENSUS a population count Gave food to the poor Let new conquered territories keep their customs Slide 4 THE PAX ROMANA Augustus rules for 41 years and made Rome very strong PAX ROMANA 200 years of peace in the Roman Empire. Slide 5 HOW DOES PEACE PAY OFF? Since nobody had to worry about fighting, trade could increase. There were also no TARIFFS, taxes on any of the goods being traded. Slide 6 DAILY LIFE IN ROME The daily life of Romans was very similar to the Etruscans. Most people lived in apartments Patricians lived in large houses called a DOMUS. Slide 7 WHERE DO THE WEALTHY LIVE? If you were VERY wealthy you would live in a VILLA, a large estate out in the country. The villa is almost like a small village, owned by one family. This is the emperor Hadrians villa outside of Rome. You can still visit it today. Slide 8 EDUCATION AND ENTERTAINMENT In Rome, boys and girls went to school together until they were teens. Boys would continue school while girls had to get private tutors. For entertainment Romans played games like dice, sports, or of course watched gladiator games. Slide 9 THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE The Pax Romana lasted for two centuries, but eventually came to an end for many different reasons. 1. Politics some of the emperors were pretty terrible. 2. Economics money! Taxes increased and Rome suffered from INFLATION, when prices keep going up. People began to trade instead of use money! Commodus was such a bad emperor he was killed by his own bodyguards! Slide 10 ENEMIES OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE 3. The third reason the empire began to fall was invasion. They were attacked by the GOTHS a people from northern Europe. Eventually in 410 A.D. a German chief named ALARIC conquered the city of Rome.
