Gallery I|M|A closes out the 2013 summer season with a group show of six male artists working in ceramics, painting, embroidery and collage.

From subtle and somber, to tongue-in-cheek and funky, these works will stay in your mind long after summer is gone.

PAUL METIVIERPaul Metivier’s fired raku and earthenware busts, vases and statues are exceptional in their plasticity and liveliness. Though his busts appear to be made of weathered wood--reminiscent of figureheads from the prows of ships--they are textured clay. Painstakingly sculpted, fired, painted and stained, these works are made freehand, beginning with the rough outline of a head. Without an initial carving or mold to guide him, Metivier instinctively works to discern and reveal their eventual forms.

“I’m a collage maker for much the same reason I’m a curator – I love images. This affection has led me to collect remnant imagery; the largely ignored and seemingly inconsequential bits of ephemera

that once had a purpose, still have a presence, but now idle in disuse. I combine, layer, juxtapose, glue, tape and re-contextualize these

bits and pieces of detritus in order to reincarnate and recharge them.” - Cory Peeke

C L UTLEY

Claude Utley’s works are filled with busy characters, tiny doodles, repeating patterns and funky colors. Based in Seattle, Utley transforms the busy-ness of the city into densely patterned and populated paintings on panel and canvas, presenting us with a bewildering array of lifeforms and details. Imbued with rhythmic energy and using eye-popping color, Utley seems to distill the music and noise all around him into small, pure snippets using paint and an expert eye.

JASON HUFF’s work is rooted in a fascination with

image and persona in pop culture. Using clay, glaze and an assortment of “low-art”

materials (papier maché, fake fur, paper) Huff looks at the heroes and villains of childhood

television and culture. His “Portrait of the Artist” series grew out of an interest in

costumes in Japanese pop culture, paired with the persona of his cat, Louie.

JAMES BROWN

J A M E S

James Brown works in rich, dark oils on linen in a classical style reminiscent of 1950s

cubism. His abstract canvases are filled with forms interacting and playing off each other,

lending movement and energy to each painting. Though they may appear frenzied and dense, they move harmoniously, a testament to

Brown’s compositional skill.

“My goal is to capture intrinsic patterns, forms, and colors that are the building blocks of existence, whether physical or intangible,

transient or eternal, to help better understand the world around me.”

ALAN CORKERY HAHN is local to the Seattle area and is known for his imaginative use of the book as a medium in his artwork. His transformation of everyday objects by cutting, sewing, excising and joining is a meditation on meaning, symbolism and utility. By using books as a canvas and adding his own text in the form of embroidery, he creates palimpsests of information.
