DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE 2016
CONTENTS
LaFayette String Quartet
I am excited, I am having fun, and I’m looking forward with as much anticipation as ever to the Festival of the Sound’s 37th season. This year is the year of anniversaries: Anagnoson and Kinton celebrate 40 years as a piano duo, the Lafayette String Quartet mark their 30th year of sharing great music with audiences around the world and our friends in Orford Six Pianos come to us as part of their 10th year together.
We are delighted to welcome back many of our beloved artists and introduce you to exciting new talent. This is Jim Mason’s 36th summer at the Festival of the Sound and the first for Charles Richard-Hamelin, the prize winner of one of the world’s most prestigious competitions, the Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw.
Many of you may remember that in 2014 we asked you to list your top ten chamber music works for us to incorporate into the 2015 festival. The list was so long we couldn’t present them all last summer so you will again find the welcoming ✪ in this brochure. Thank you for your love and enthusiasm for such great music.
You will notice two special piano concerts, My Favourite Beethoven with Stewart Goodyear and My Favourite Chopin with Janina Fialkowska. Both programmes were chosen entirely by these wonderful artists. In fact, this year much of the music reflects the personal choices of our musicians ranging from well-known, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio, to lesser known, George Onslow’s String Quintet (Joel Quarrington’s choice).
For the first time the Elmer Iseler Singers will not be boarding a bus after their concert, but will be staying with us for a mini-residency during our opening weekend.
I am happy to invite you to look through our programmes and l look forward to greeting you once again at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts.

In the Festival’s innovative education program Music Scores, children in Grades 4 to 6 in eleven area schools enjoy six concert experiences, some of which have included the Festival Winds, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the National Ballet of Canada’s YOU dance program. Prior to each concert, musicians visit every school, getting to know the students in an informal setting, demonstrating their instruments and preparing them for the concert. Then all 700 children come to the Stockey Centre to listen to the musicians, now their friends, in a formal concert setting.
Each summer, the Festival Board and staff plan a special fundraiser in the lobby of the concert hall. The Kids on the Bus campaign in 2015 was directed to the Youth Music Education Fund. Patrons could sponsor students at $20 each or a full bus at $1,000. Throughout the three weeks, the sponsor board filled with cutouts of children and yellow school buses representing each $1,000 raised. A total of $18,390 was achieved. For this, the Festival of the Sound has been honoured by Festivals & Events Ontario with a 2016 Festival Achievement Award for Best Fundraising Idea. Congratulations to all who helped to make Kids on the Bus such an outstanding success.
Music Scores is offered without charge to the children, their families or the schools. The Festival of the Sound thanks the following for the support that makes Music Scores possible:

FORM A LASTING LEGACY IN THE LAND THAT YOU LOVE
owes its very beginning to a legacy gift. In 1897, Dr. John R. Stone fi nanced the opening and management of the Parry Sound General Hospital. From humble beginnings serving 70 patients many suff ering from typhoid, we’ve grown to a 70-bed acute care hospital operating a 24-hour Emergency that annually serves approximately 20,000 patients in Emergency alone. Dr. Stone’s lasting legacy has made our Parry Sound world safer.
A donation to the Foundation through your will off ers our generation the chance to contribute meaningfully to the next. It’s our fi nal statement about ourselves, those we care about and the place that we love. It is enduring.

Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund
Charles and Lois Stockey were supporters of and workers for the Festival of the Sound in its formative years before they moved to Victoria, BC. In 2002, what began with a casual question from Charles about what was happening now in Parry Sound led to a donation of $1.7 million to name the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. Now the Festival has a home, an intimate performance hall that has come to be ranked as one of the finest in the world for chamber music. During the 25th Anniversary Season in 2004, the Festival Board established the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund to honour our benefactors.
Charles Stockey died in September of 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lois lives in Victoria and maintains a keen interest in news from Parry Sound.
Contributions of any size are welcome and are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
