Dear U.S. Junior Championship Sailors,

Welcome to 2018 U.S. Chubb Junior Championship. We are very pleased to have North Cape Yacht Club as this year’s host and the club has planned a great event.

Hosting of a US Sailing championship is a big undertaking. Robert Gordenker and Albert Gossman, regatta co-chairs, have spent many hours working on the many details for this event with their committees. US Sailing is grateful for the year-long effort by all those involved. We also thank our sponsors Chubb and Gill NA whose generous support makes this premier racing event possible.

Competing in a US Sailing Championship may be a new racing experience for you. Each time it is a different group of sailors and an opportunity to make new friends and reconnect with others. Welcome Chubb U.S. Junior Sailors! North Cape Yacht Club (NCYC) is located on the western shore of Lake Erie in Monroe County, Michigan. We are pleased that NCYC has been selected to host the 2018 Chubb U.S. Junior Sailing Championships on August 6-10. As you spend time in our communities, we trust that you will have the opportunity to enjoy some unique dining and entertainment experiences and will spend time exploring more of Monroe County’s natural assets. Greetings, It is a pleasure to welcome the competitors, sponsors, and dignitaries from U.S. Sailing, who are gathering to celebrate the Chubb U.S. Junior Championships hosted by the North Cape Yacht Club in LaSalle, Michigan from August 6-10, 2018.

Qualifying junior sailors from all corners of the United States will compete with their peers in three different classes. The Chubb Championship remains the only youth championship that is based on qualifying at the top of a regional regatta. The Toledo community would like to congratulate all the athletes, volunteers, and sponsors who have worked tirelessly in preparation for the upcoming days of competition and camaraderie. LaSalles is a close neighbor of Toledo, OH, and shares our scenic coastline of Lake Erie, which is a natural beauty and destination for people who love sailing. North Cape Yacht Club (NCYC) was founded in 1962 by a dedicated group of sailors looking for great access to Lake Erie for competition or simply going for a pleasure sail. Located on the Michigan shore of Lake Erie about 10 miles North of Michigan Ohio boundary, NCYC shares a harbor entrance with Toledo Beach Marina. With 150 deep water docks, a large dry-sail area and a splendid beach area, NCYC sailors of all types can launch and be in open water in about 15 minutes.

NCYC hosted the Sears, Bemis and Smythe Regatta in 2003 and is honored to host again in 2018. EachyearNCYChostsafullscheduleofPHRFracing,localfleeteventsforLightnings,Snipes,andcatamarans along with two or three National or North-American Championships. Classes who have come to compete at our venue include: Lightnings, Interlakes, Snipes, Highlanders, Catalina 22s, A-Class cats, Hobie 33s, J-35s and many others. The members of NCYC volunteer to make these events top-drawer, both out on the water and ashore.

There is long history of Junior Sailing at NCYC. We are proud to see several of our junior sailors’ names inscribed on the Sears, Bemis and Smythe trophies. Our Junior Sailing alumni also include an Olympic gold medalist, Anna Tunnicliffe (2008). Recently NCYC has organized and hosted Advanced Race Clinics where experience sailors received coaching and instruction from top coaches on skills not normally covered at their home clubs. Graduates of these 4-day clinics have gone on to achieve manypodiumfinishesandconsistentlyfinishatthetopoftheirfleet.

The Co-Chairs of the Chubb Organizing Committee and all the volunteers extend a warm welcome to the participants, supporters and visiting families. We also wish to thank the NCYC Bridge and Board and membership for their support for the Chubb Jr. National Championship.

The competition for the Sears, Bemis and Smythe trophies will take place on Western Lake Erie just off the beach area at North Cape Yacht Club. Please see the chart below for details.

The average temperature is a high of 81F and low of 63F. The gradientflowinearlyAugustistypicallyfromthewesttosouth-west,whichisanoff-shorebreezeresultinginflatwaterbutshifty conditions. However, low pressure systems in the area can deliver winds from the north-east to east, which is on-shore and given the long fetch will result in choppy conditions with 1-3 foot waves.

On warmer and sunnier days, an on-shore ‘sea breeze’ may de-velop usually from the south-east.

The racing circles are in the open waters of Lake Erie. Given that the regatta is being held mid-week, we do not anticipate issues with motor boat chop.

History of the Championship

In 1921, Commodore Herbert M. Sears of the Eastern Yacht Club at Marblehead, MA placed in competition a Cup bearing his name for competition among juniors of Massachusetts yacht clubs. The next year eligibility broadened to include clubs such as Larchmont and Seawanhaka Corinthian on Long Island Sound and Cedarhurst on the south shore of Long Island,NY.Howracinghaschangedsincethenisreflectedinthefactthatboys in those days were required to wear caps, neckties and jackets and girls dresses while sailing.

In 1930, Commodore Sears of the Eastern Yacht Club at Marblehead, confidentthatNAYRUwasheretostayanddeemingitdesirablethatthe competition be national in scope, deeded the trophy to NAYRU for triplehanded sailing among juniors over 12 and under 18 whose parents or guardians are members of some Yacht Club in the United States recognized by the Union. Under the deed, the Cup is “for the purpose of promoting thesportofyachtingbyencouragingproficiencyinseamanshipandsportsmanlike conduct in sail yacht racing on the part of boys and girls of school age”. By the 1950’s, NAYRU was inviting the Associations to make selections of teams to compete. Until the US Yacht Racing Union was formed in 1975, teams from Canadian Yacht Clubs also competed.

Spurred by the growing number of sailors in singlehanded boats, led to the addition in 1974 of the U.S. Junior Singlehanded championship for a trophy in honor D. Verner Smythe, a long-time chairman of the Sears Cup Committee. The U.S. Doublehanded Championship is of similar vintage as the U.S. Junior Singlehanded. F. Gregg Bemis was best known for his work on the racing rules which included a long tenure as chairman of the Appeals Committee, but it was his leadership role in judging at junior and intercollegiate regattas that inspired a group of co-judges to donate in 1975 a trophy for doublehanded junior sailing.

The Championships are ladder events in which eliminations are open to the 1000+ yacht clubs and 150+ community sailing programs in the Yacht Racing, or District, Associations that today comprise US Sailing. In 1999 the singlehanded and doublehanded divisions were expanded to include two teams per Area (groupings of Yacht Racing or District Associations) with the exception of Areas H and L, each of whom send one team.
