WELCOME, FATHER CAMBE On Monday, Labor Day, three Masses will be celebrated at the Cathedral – 8:00am; 12:10pm; and 5:15pm. There will be no 6:00 or 7:00am Masses on the holiday. Also, the Church office will be closed on Labor Day. On Monday, pray for those who work. Pray for all who work in the service of others. Pray for those who work in management. Pray for those who are retired. Pray for farm workers. Pray for those out of work and for those who depend on them. Pray for those disabled and unable

to work. Pray for all volunteers. Pray for those blessed in working for God’s people.

Also next Sunday, you will be able to see how healthy you are. The LIVE WELL FAIR, sponsored by the Cathedral’s Black Catholic parishioners, will offer everyone the opportunity to monitor your health. Basic health tests, valuable information, flu shots, plus vaccinations for adults and children will be offered in the cafeteria. Enter via the State Street doors of FXW school from 8:00am until 2:00pm next Sunday, September 7. Improve your health; be assured of your health – next Sunday after Mass. See page 7 for more details.

There is great news at Holy Name Cathedral! Father Don Cambe has accepted an appointment to our parish as a full-time associate pastor. Ordained for the Diocese of Paranaque in the Philippines on March 29, 2008, Father Cambe has served as associate pastor in three parishes and as pastor of St. Isidro Labrador in his home diocese for the past three years. He has a sister Michelle and nieces Nina and Janelle living in southwest suburban Oak Lawn. He entered the seminary back home as a teen and took a two-year “time out” as a banker before returning to the Jesuit-led major seminary in Manila. With his arrival, there are now four priests assigned full-time to Holy Name Cathedral – me, Father John Boivin, Father Brad Zamora, and Father Don Cambe. Fathers Lou Cameli, Ramil Fajardo, Bill Woestman, and Bill Moriarity continue to live here while working outside the parish; Msgr. Mike Boland of Catholic Charities says Mass here occasionally on Sundays. Holy Name is blessed to have such a number of priests available for the heavy load of sacramental ministry expected of us as both a vibrant parish and the mother-Church of the Archdiocese. Someone asked me if Father Cambe is the first foreign-born priest assigned to Holy Name. No. There were a couple of South American Augustinians on the staff in the 1960s to serve the sizeable Spanish-language population that lived in this vicinity at that time. Also, the first two Cathedral pastors – John McMullen and Patrick Conway – plus a few of their associates spoke with a native Irish brogue. Remember, too, that Cathedral resident priest Father Fajardo, although raised in Oak Park, also was born in the Philippines. We welcome Father Don Cambe and look forward to his valuable addition to Holy Name Cathedral.

When the Parish Council convenes this week, there will be six new members. Olivia Silver has been a Cathedral parishioner for 11 years along with her husband John. She was chair of the Education Commission in the second half of her three-year volunteer service on that important part of Holy Name. Professionally, Olivia is an account

supervisor and senior writer at Greentarget, a PR firm working with large law offices. Just a year ago, Jaime Waters moved to Chicago from Baltimore where she was a lector and Communion Minister at St. Ignatius Church. Currently, Jaime is a professor of Catholic Studies at DePaul University. Donna Ciszewski joined HNC in 2002 from the southwest side of Chicago where she was raised. This is Donna’s second term on the PPC; she was chair 2007-2008 when she marshaled the volunteer lay leadership seeing us through six months out of the Cathedral during structural repairs. A lector and Eucharistic minister, Donna also chairs the Art and Environment Committee that makes our Cathedral look great. She recently retired as an auditor for the Illinois Department of Insurance. Sue Kovacs has been a Holy Name member since 2008 and has been an active participant in the Adult Education lecture series. Sue is Executive Director of Human Resources and Payroll Services at the University of Illinois for the last 28 years. She leads mediator services for her department, one of the largest at UIC. Gabi Schultz, a Cathedral parishioner for four years, has experience as a Minister of Care, a Minister of the Eucharist, and a participant in young adult activities. An attorney with the City’s Administrative Hearings, Gabi is involved with the Catholic Lawyers Guild and the Big Shoulders Foundation that raises so much money for Chicago’s Catholic Schools. Toreend Enecio is a lector and has been a member of the Young Adult Ministry Board for four years. A parishioner since 2007, a native of the Philippines, she is an oncology nurse in the division of hematology at Rush University Medical Center. These six dedicated and talented women join Parish Council Chair Kyle Williams, Jeff Greene, and Jay Tremblay (in their third years) plus Vice Chair Lori Doyle, Kathy McCabe, and Julie Cook (second year) in regularly offering me advice on the administration of the parish and in coordinating the many sponsored activities of the Adult Education Commission, the Parish Life Commission, the Evangelization and Spiritual Life Commission, and the Human Concerns Commission. Their volunteer ministry gives Holy Name Cathedral the famous reputation we enjoy as a parish.

This Sunday we remember former Chicago Auxiliary Bishop and later Bishop of Madison, Wisconsin, Cletus O’Donnell. He had the briefest term of the nine of us who were honored to serve as pastors of Holy Name Cathedral, 1966-1967. He was responsible for bringing Father (later Bishop) Timothy Lyne with him as administrator and subsequently much-respected pastor of our parish. A footnote – Bishop O’Donnell confirmed me when I was 11. Cletus O’Donnell died on August 31, 1992. Msgr. Patrick Hayes was rector here from 1946-1966. He oversaw the building of structures that now house FXW, the Parish Center, Casa Jesus/Abramowicz Seminary, and the garage on the east side of Wabash that I am trying to sell to cut our debt to the Archdiocese for a loan on fire/structural repairs/rectory renovation. He bought our parking lot, and he began the televised Christmas Midnight Mass. Msgr. Hayes died on September 1, 1978. Sunday and Monday, in grateful prayer, remember two of my predecessors. They were part of Holy Name Cathedral.
