Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Jeremiah 20:7-9 | Romans 12:1-2 | Matthew 16:21-27

Gospel

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed

and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.”

He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever

loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”

1. Well!! Peter does it again. He protests again! Have you ever protested like he did, thinking that what you were saying or doing was right? How does Christ correct you or change your direction of thinking?

2. Pretend for a moment that you are speaking with someone you know very well. Suddenly she/he tells you that they will be killed, and on the third day be raised. How would you react? How would you feel, especially about the person who was telling you? Would you believe the statement is true?

3. What cross have you been given to bear? Do you recognize it? Have you reached out for it, carried it, and followed Christ?

4. How long do you have to carry your cross; or should you be freed of it? What does the cross mean to you?

St. Mark installed a Hearing Loop to assist those with hearing loss hear more clearly during church services. A Hearing Loop is an assistive listening system that transmits sound directly into one’s hearing aids or cochlear implants rather than depending on sound coming from the loudspeakers.

To receive the Loop signal, manually activate your T-coil or telephone setting on your hearing aid or cochlear implant. If you don’t know if you have a T-coil or if yours is properly programmed, consult with your audiologist or hearing aid professional.

If you have a hearing impairment but don’t wear hearing aids, ask to use one of the church’s receivers that can be used with our headset, or attached to your own.

If you have further questions about Looping, please contact the installation company, Complete Hearing Solutions at www.CompleteHearingSolutions.org or call 727-260-3488.

Your spiritually adopted baby is growing so quickly. Please continue to pray for

him/her each and every day.

Beginning this month, the baby uses four senses. His eyelids open and close,

and the eyes look around. The baby can hear, taste,

touch, cough, yawn and hiccup. He recognizes his own mother’s voice.

His grip is even stronger now than it will be after his birth.

The hair on his head is growing longer, and the downy covering on the

rest of his body is disappearing. During this time

the baby will receive antibodies from his mother, providing him immunity

to a wide variety of diseases.

“I can look around!”

Since our Mass Intention Book for 2020 is full, there is now an alternative to having Mass offered for a loved one or yourself. The Pauline Fathers in Wolverhampton, UK, will be offering Masses for your intentions. There are two parishes, St. Mary and St. John Church, and St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus Church.

These Mass intentions will be announced in the bulletin on the first weekend of each month for the Masses that were offered the prior month. Not only will your Mass be offered right away, but you will also help the Paulines in Wolverhampton financially. This is greatly needed, especially due to COVID-19.

Please consider this alternative when offering a Mass in the future.

A few weeks ago the heads of ministries met with Fr. Rafal, Fr. Dominik and Tina Hajducko to learn about the process for ministries to begin their important work here at St. Mark beginning as early as next week. While this is exciting news, it brings about several challenges and new ways of thinking in order to follow Diocesan, CDC, state and local authorities.

We are a social family When you think of St. Mark, we truly hope that you think of a family—and families are social people. But just as we’ve had to adapt to masks, distancing, carrying hand sanitizer, and…[you fill in the blank], we’ve had to change the way our parish family must socialize too. It’s critical for us to have a plan to keep everyone as safe as possible, as you would keep your own family safe at home.

New protocols This means that we have new processes to follow when we use the church facilities for meetings. From sign-in sheets, to room capacities, to cleaning and sanitizing (and much more), the processes are designed for everyone’s protection. The ministry heads are working with us to see that our new protocols are being followed.

Rooms/meetings and events As we take these small steps, we will utilize the social hall, conference room across the hall from the office, and the upstairs conference room. The library, enrichment center, chapel, choir room and choir loft remain closed until further notice. Some of the changes you will notice with the ministry meetings include:

• No food or drink allowed - exception, individuals may bring water in a capped bottle

• No printed material - bring your own pen/writing material • Social distancing/no physical contact (including the

sharing of objects used in games/activities) • Face masks required/bring your hand sanitizer • Everyone must complete a screening questionnaire • Attendance sheets must be completed (legibly, please) • Schedules allow for cleaning between meetings

Attending Mass, ministries, and social events If you become sick after an event, contact the event leader and self-quarantine 14 days (or test negative to COVID-19). If you aren’t celebrating Mass with us due to your health, then you won’t be allowed to participate in parish ministry at this time, for your own safety. We’ll look forward to welcoming you back when you do feel well enough to worship with us.

These recommendations will be reviewed/revised as necessary on a regular basis to ensure

that they are adequate responses to changing conditions. Guidelines/protocols may be relaxed or increased

based on the recommendations of Diocesan, federal, state, and local health departments,

and the decision of the pastor.

Many thanks to those who use our online resources! With the addition of livestreaming Mass daily, some of the traditional tasks have taken a “back seat” to the new responsibilities.

As we are reopening the church, there are additions to the church calendar once again and there are more news items on the Web. The calendar is not being updated with recurring meetings right now, since everything is still evolving. Meetings will be added weekly so check back often.

Without the publication of the bulletins we will depend on communicating with our online resources. Please be patient as the bulletin and the website grow with our reopening!

Since we are unaware of the situation around us from day-to-day, we’d like to remind you that the ordination ceremony for Jim Lucas will take place on October 3, and that it will be livestreamed from Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine at 10:00 a.m. We will post a link on our Facebook page and Website that will take you to the correct location to view in the safety of your own home. Look for more information as the day draws near.

Looking for 2021 Mass Intentions? The book will open on October 1. Look for more information in a couple of weeks!

Quite often the office receives inquiries regarding on-line donations. While we do not offer “e-giving or on-line donations,” setting up automatic payments with your financial institution could save you time and effort. This can be done using a checking or savings account—not a credit card. Your bank will mail recurring checks for you directly to St. Mark the Evangelist. Here’s the process: 1. If you aren’t already using on-line

banking, enroll at your financial institution.

2. Authorize your bank to make weekly/monthly/yearly payments to St. Mark the Evangelist Church. Your bank can help you if you haven’t done this before. a. Make sure your bank has your Parish ID number printed

on your check. (This 4-digit number is printed on your envelopes or if you’re not sure, contact the parish office.).

b. In the memo section of the check, have the bank identify where the money is to be directed; i.e., Weekly Offertory, St. Vincent de Paul, special collections, etc.

c. Your institution will send your contribution to St. Mark, and it will be posted in the Church ledger.

Don’t forget to contact the parish office to let us know that you no longer require bi-monthly sets of offertory envelopes.

St. Mark Parish Office

[email protected] | 352/347-9317

Note: Most banks offer this service free of charge — before beginning, ask if there are costs associated with sending monthly checks.

COVID-19 changed so many things in our lives, but one thing hasn’t changed...the generosity of St. Mark parishioners who give time, talent, and treasure.

Last week Reggie and Ada Knight offered a gift to remind us that we have so much to be grateful for, regardless of the situation of the world around us. Reggie created this beautiful sign and then he and Ada added a Proclamation of Gratitude that is attached on the back of the sign.

As our lives continue to be impacted by situations we cannot control, this beautiful gift will help to remind us that one small spark can light a fire, bringing warmth and joy to those around us.

And if we haven’t said it enough, “Thank you” to all of you who continue to support us with your prayers, your talents and your treasure. May our dear Lord bless you abundantly.

This is an important

fundraiser for the Shrine.

Please

consider joining them

virtually this year!

According to Pope Francis, “The [September 1] annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation offers to individual believers and to the community a precious opportunity to renew our personal participation in this vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvelous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking His help for the protection of creation and His mercy for the sins committed against the world in which we live.”

Begin your day with one of the prayers that Pope Francis composed for his Laudato Si’ encyclical such as the one on the right, A Prayer for our Earth.

Find more resources at https://catholicclimatemovement.global/world-day-of-prayer/. For those in a bible study or sharing group, on that page there is an especially good guided prayer developed by Fr. Terrence J. Moran.

Let us remember how fragile our world is and that it takes all of us to protect it.

St. Mark hosts a 9/11 service each year for the FDNY 343 Memorial Club. While this is not a “St. Mark ministry event,” we are pleased to facilitate the service as it honors those who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This year the event will be “by ticket only” to assure the number of attendees are within our limited seating restrictions. There is no cost to attend.
