Helping Hands of Midland

1301 Brinson Lane Midland Tx.

In a perfect world Helping Hands would not exist. In a perfect world, Helping Hands’ services of financial assistance would not be needed by anyone. In a perfect world, all of us here at Helping Hands would have to volunteer our services elsewhere. That’s because, in a perfect world, everyone’s needs would already be met, thus eliminating any need for benevolence assistance. We all know there is no such thing as a perfect world. Jesus said “the por you have with you always”. There will always be those in need in our world including right here in Midland. Sometimes those needs can appear to be so great at Helping Hands (such as the job loss experienced during the pandemic last year) that we can scarcely breathe. Other times, not often but occasionally, the needs of our neighbors are not quite so overwhelming. Those are good times. We have several safeguards in place to ensure that every legitimate need, no matter how many or how few, is met. Some of them are: CHARITY TRACKER. This is a data base set up to track individual assistance, and it is shared by most of the benevolence organizations in Midland. This helps us to follow a person’s history of assistance and to check for patterns. We use the client’s social security number as a means of tracking the data. LIMITING OUR ASSISTANCE to no more than once in a 12-month period, and then, only if the need is legitimate. We do not help people every year just because a year has passed since the last time that we helped them. DOCUMENTATION. We require that single parents show that they have filed for child support if they are not already receiving it. We also ask for proof of hardship (medical bills, legal papers), proof of income and pretty much anything else that the caseworker thinks might be applicable to the case. We have been accused of being “nosey” in the past, and that this information is none of our business. Well, it really is…we need that information to log the circumstances of why they are needing help. Then when they call back in a year, we will have a way to gauge if any forward progress is being made. There are always exceptions to our rules. That is we strive always to be sensitive to those reaching our to us, and we try always to respond with compassion and mercy to those in need, while still using our safeguards. We want you to know that we are committed to being good stewards of the money that you donate to us. Thank you for your donation of money, time and prayers. We could not do this work without your support. May you be richly blessed! SEPTEMBER TRUCK SCHEDULE Our truck will be at St. Stephen’s next Saturday, September 4, and at St. Ann’s on Saturday, September 18, from 9 am until 1 pm to pick up your donations. We thank the Knights of Columbus for taking on this responsibility.
