FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to
introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way,
please let us know. We look forward to seeing you again.
One of the virtues that are most admired and least practiced today is humility. Our culture today seems to
advocate individualism, self-interest, and self-promotion. It values personal power and control, and putting oneself
above everything else and at the center of the universe of one’s priorities and decisions. On the other hand,
humility is the virtue by which we see ourselves as we are and live as such: creatures and adopted children of God
our Creator and heavenly Father; and servants and disciples of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Scripture
readings this weekend put humility in the spotlight. The first reading from Sirach delivers the message very
succinctly: “Humble yourself the more, the greater you are; and you will find favor with God.” Sirach goes on to
speak of the benefits of humility, both in secular matters and in service of the Lord. The gospel passage finds Jesus
having a meal at the home of one of the leading religious leaders of his time. When Jesus notices that the other
guests were choosing the places of honor at the table (apparently there were no “place settings”), he tells a story
about a wedding banquet in which all the invited guests gravitate to the head table rather than taking a place near
the back of the room. Jesus admonishes his listeners: “do not recline at table in the place of honor”…otherwise, he
says, a more distinguished guest may arrive and the host would have to ask you to go to “the lowest place” which
would be humiliating and embarrassing to say the least. This story is a powerful illustration of Jesus’ teaching on
humility: “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Jesus
then offers a concrete application of humility, encouraging his hearers not to invite just family members, influential
friends, and wealthy neighbors to their dinner parties (those who may feel the need to invite you back as
‘repayment” of your hospitality). Rather, Jesus instructs them to invite those who are not capable of reciprocal
hospitality (like the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and those without worldly resources). According to
Jesus, such humble service will merit a place of honor at the eternal banquet. Humility begins and ends with a
simple spiritual truth, which can be expressed this way: God is God and we are not; Jesus is the Savior and we are
sinners who have been saved. May we live in humble adoration of God and service to Christ and his people in the
coming days!
News and Notes: Lecture series… All adult parishioners are invited to the first of my lectures to the faculty of OLA
School, which will take place on Monday, August 29 at from 11AM to noontime in the School Cafeteria. The topic is
a Catholic theology of Scripture. After my talk, there will be about 20-30 minutes for questions and discussion. This
lecture is part of Boston College’s C21 series which our Catholic School teachers are taking in their ongoing
formation and certification program.
Changes to Mass schedule, Confirmation format… The 5PM Sunday Mass at St. Maria Goretti Parish will resume on
Sunday, September 11. Spread the word! Beginning on Sunday, October 2, Bobby Thorp, the talented music
teacher at OLA School will be leading song with the children of the School at the 9AM Sunday Mass on the first
Sunday of every month. Also new this coming fall will be the format of our Confirmation program. All classes will be
held on Sundays at St. Maria Goretti Church, and will begin with the 5PM Mass, with our teens serving in various
liturgical roles, including our music ministry. The Pastoral Team hopes that these developments will deepen our
children’s experience of the Mass and draw more people to active participation in our community of faith. Blessings
to all of you in the week ahead!

COLLABORATIVE NEWS Praying Hands for Faith Formation
Our 2016-2017 Faith Formation programs need supplies! In an effort to keep our program fees
reasonable for our young families, we need your help. On a
poster board in our churches are cut-outs of praying hands
with our needed supplies for the upcoming school year.
Please take a “praying hand”, purchase the item listed, and
place your donations in the baskets below the poster board.
This is a great way for all our parishioners to support the
faith formation of our young Catholics. Your gift is most
appreciated.

Volunteers Needed: Ministry of Consolation
The Lynnfield Catholic
community believes that no
one should grieve alone. The Ministry of
Consolation will assist our pastor in providing
bereavement and spiritual support to
parishioners who have experienced the death of
a family member or friend.
During this Year of Mercy, please consider
sharing your time and talent by volunteering for
this new ministry. Volunteers are needed to:
send notes and cards to bereaved parishioners,
which may be done from the comfort of your
own home!
Please contact Maggie Coolican at 860-682-4156 or [email protected].
A note of thanks from OLA to SMG:
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Donna Hegan and her committee who hosted a wonderful brunch on our feast day for our patron saint, Our Lady of the Assumption. To Chris and Beth Barrett, Joyce Calogero, Ben and Barbara Downs, Dave Drislane, Jim and Cynthia Fagan, Elaine Frontero, Cathy Glencross, Jean Goguen, Donna Hegan, Ben and Lourdes Lagman, Beverly Longo, Jim and Arlene McGovern, Beverly Merritt, Ron and Hope Nutter, Richard and Maria Palermo, Dennis and Jo-Anne Rogers, Sandra Samojeden, and all others who donated towards the brunch — the food was amazing and enjoyed by everyone in attendance.
A special thanks to the Lynnfield Knights of Columbus who honored us with their presence, as they led the procession with Sir Knights Paul Pellegrino, Dean Jenkins, Vincent Inglese, and Paul Petkewich carrying the statue of the Blessed Mother.
It was truly a day that our Collaborative came together with hospitality, friendship, and love!
Audio-Visual Design Our Collaborative is in the initial planning stage to upgrade and integrate the audio-visual capabilities at both SMG and OLA. COLLABORATIVE FAITH FORMATION
COLLABORATIVE YOUTH MINISTRY
Catechists Needed!
Both Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Maria Goretti Faith Formation programs are still looking for a few Catechists for the 2016-2017 school year. If you are interested in volunteering to share your faith with the young people of our parishes, please contact: Alexis at [email protected] (for OLA’s Grades K-6) or Bethany at [email protected] (for SMG’s Grades 1-6).
Advisory Boards
Youth Ministry Advisory Boards… We are seeking to establish two separate Youth Ministry Advisory
Boards, one for Grades 7 and 8, and one for Grades 9 and 10. The purpose for these boards is to empower our children to determine the kinds of activities they would find enjoyable and enriching. In an effort to develop both a healthy Christian community environment, as well as provide opportunities for our youth to fulfill the service component of Confirmation requirements, we want our Faith Formation students to take ownership of the direction and content of their Youth Ministry. We hope that this will not only mean a deeper and more meaningful investment in the activities they commit to today, but also lead them to continue their service as adult members of our faith community.
Parent Advisory Board for Youth Ministry… As in all youth activities, we need our parents to be
present, to model, to give direction, and to support. Many of our parents have fond memories of the CYO Dances and church trips of their youth, but times have changed. We know our children have full schedules of sports, dance, scouts, music, and theater, as well as part-time jobs and other obligations. We need parental input on how to best involve their children, keep their attention, and help give them the fullness of a Catholic upbringing.
If interested in any of the above, please contact Stephen Gannon, Director of Youth Faith Formation, at [email protected].

Meet our new 3rd Grade Teachers!
Ms. O’Flynn is a North Shore native and excited to join
the faculty this year at OLA. She says she's wanted to
teach ever since she was 10 years old and always loved
helping her mother, who is a teacher. Ms. O’Flynn
previously worked as a paraprofessional at the Hannah
School in Beverly, and as a 2nd grade teacher at St.
Mary's School in Beverly. She's an avid runner. That
(along with a cup of coffee!) is how she starts every day
and says she often runs races with family and friends.
Welcome Ms. O’Flynn!
Mrs. Sherburne has a degree from Salem State
University and won the Ecumenical Athletic Association
Teacher of the Year Award for 2015-2016 in the PK to
4th grade division! Mrs. Sherburne previously taught at
the Franco American School in Lowell and says she loves
teaching because, ‘It provides me the vehicle I need to
shape the minds of my students and prepare them for
what tomorrow might bring.’ Her hero is her mother
who always told her to reach for the stars and follow her
dreams. ‘She always taught me that with God in my life,
nothing is impossible’. Welcome Mrs. Sherburne!
Thank you to the OLA
PTO for purchasing a new
podium with the Our Lady
of the Assumption logo
for the school. It looks
beautiful and is very
much appreciated!
DISCIPLESHIP
Have you heard of our Prayer Shawl Ministry? With prayers infused into every stitch, these shawls and
blankets are sources of comfort and physical reminders of God's loving embrace to the sick, elderly,
lonely, or worried. The faith-filled women of this ministry pray while knitting or crocheting, a parishioner
prays the rosary over them, and our Bible Study group lays hands on them.
They find their way to hospitals, retirement homes, college dorm rooms, baby cribs, and anywhere a little
prayerful hug is needed. On occasion, they have taken other forms. Scarves were created for the Special
Olympics and for OLA School students when they traveled to Washington, DC, for the March for Life. The
latest project has been to knit and crochet dolls for Doctors Without Borders, who will give them to the
children waiting for vaccinations in the Dominican Republic.
If you would like to give one to a friend or loved one, they are available at the Collaborative Business
Office (17 Grove Street, Lynnfield). A small donation is appreciated to cover the costs of yarn.
If you would like to join this ministry, new members are always welcome! Meetings are on Thursday
mornings and will re-start on October 6. Please contact Carol Farina at [email protected].

To warm you when you feel a chill
And hold you when you’re very ill
To give you strength and hope and cheer
