PASSING IT FORWARD: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS! What Good News? The Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic Faith! This fall over 100 elementary age children will register for Christian Formation classes in which they will learn about Jesus’ love, mercy, and their Catholic faith; however, we do not have enough catechists to teach these eager young children. YOU can help them learn and grow by becoming a catechist! With classes between the Masses on Sundays and an engaging and easy to follow lectionary-based curriculum, this ministry can easily fit into your schedule. As a catechist, YOU will have the opportunity to plant seeds and nurture the faith formation of the youngest members of our parish family. And as you nurture these seeds of faith, you will also discover that your own understanding of the faith will grow. As a current catechist has shared many times, “I learn so much from the children I teach. My understanding of the faith has grown since I became a catechist.” We provide the supplies/support/and training – all you need is the desire to serve. Let’s keep their hearts burning…Answer the Call to Serve today! We urge you to prayerfully consider joining the K-5 Catechist Team. If interested, please contact Tiffany at [email protected] or in the Parish Office for more information.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OFCELEBRATING! Thirty-five years ago on August 27, 1981, we celebrated our very first Mass in our then brand new Church of the Holy Family. We are so thankful to our Lord for His love and guidance…it is celebration time!

Thirty-five years of Celebrating Mass will start with a Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, August 27, at 5:30 p.m., continuing with our Good Ol’ Fashion Country Parish Picnic on Sunday, August 28, after the 10:30 a.m. Mass.

Food, fun, and fellowship are the cornerstones of our Parish Picnic. This year, the talents of many in our parish are combined to make a fun afternoon of community for parishioners to celebrate the end of the summer and the start of a new school year, but also 35 years of all that comes from celebrating Mass as a church community.

We provide the hotdogs and hamburgers, you provide a side dish or dessert to share – sign-up after all Masses.

Big attractions include: live music: Hard Knox Bluegrass Band, watermelon seed spitting competition, adult cornhole, children’s games, face painting, an inflatable bounce house, and of course, eating great picnic food!

“CREATION CARE CORNER”Regional residents are currently faced with the issue of the coal ash disposal in Chesapeake. Coal ash is what is left after coal is burned in coal-powered plants. In previous decades, Dominion, along with other utilities, has mixed coal ash with water and stored it in unlined ponds adjacent to the power plants, which usually are built near rivers or other water bodies, needed for cooling. In several instances, these ponds are located near tidal rivers, which are subject to sea-level rise. Mixing coal ash with water and storing it in the ground near rivers presents a few hazards. Remember the 2014 Duke Energy coal ash spill into the Dan River in North Carolina? Large amounts of coal ash were released and the water in the rivers was contaminated. Much of the pollution flowed into Virginia. With regard to the Chesapeake facility there is evidence that arsenic and other pollutants from ash are leaching into the ground water and adjacent surface waters. Environmentalists maintain that the safe way to dispose of coal ash is to excavate it from the unlined ponds and move it to dry, properly lined landfills AWAY from water. North Carolina has agreed to this method of clean-up. So, far Virginia, being pressured by Dominion, has not. In the near future, the public will have opportunities to be heard and to submit written comments, which are essential, supporting this method. More specifics will soon follow regarding the public comments.

  • The bus ride on the day there was kind of awkward for me. I didn't

know anyone. But I quickly became friends with Mia who came

with our church. Then on Friday it was really fun. We had a mass,

went tubing, had opening night at the conference center, and a

small adoration. During tubing we survived the hypothermia. On

Saturday we stayed at the conference center from morning to

night. We had different sessions we could go to. Then at night we

had adoration. During my first adoration is was very emotional. It was a time for me and God

to connect. Every time we went to the conference center we listened to music. Everyone sang

and worshipped God. Sunday was our last day. We had a mass and listened to music then

went on our way home. On the way back it was way more fun then the way there. I met so

many nice people and I can't wait to return next year. -Kelly

    This weekend was an

    experience that

    profoundly changed

    me as a Catholic. I

began to grow closer to Christ during the week of LEAD but

it didn't really hit me until the adoration night. I finally

truly understood what it meant to be in front of the lord

and how to let your heart pour out with all of your troubles.

He wanted you to express your thoughts and to talk to him

during adoration. The speakers there were amazing and a

lot of what they talked about could be related to my life!

The best part of the weekend would have to be right in the

middle to end of adoration. This is because I had gotten

over my emotional reaction to the event and I was singing.

I saw so many of my brothers and sisters praising Christ and

singing together as one family. Everyone was so nice to me

and I would do it again in a heart beat! Thanks Jeff for

    telling me about it! -Alex

  • My experience at Steubenville was life changing. At first I was

nervous, I didn't know anybody and I wasn't sure how much

fun it would be. But as soon as I got there, I immediately felt at

home. Everyone was so welcoming and kind-hearted. My

favorite part, if I can even pick one, was adoration, where I had

an experience like no other. In the middle of prayer I was

suddenly filled with a warm, calm feeling. I felt so free from all

my worries and stress and I knew the Holy Spirit had entered

me and filled me with his love. Steubenville has changed my

life and I will never forget this amazing experience and I can't

    wait till next year. -Mia

My experience at lead was wonderful. I learned

that God's creation is all around us. I learned how

to conduct personal prayer and had a wonderful 5

days. Atlanta was so much fun! Adoration was so

intense, and it made me realize that even though I

might be skeptical about letting God come in and

take over your heart, but if you let him, you will be

10x happier than you were before.
