Black Soil ReviewThe follow is a review of local author Peter Bishop’s book, Black Soil. Printed in the Sydney University Alumni Magazine March 2012 - Colleen Cook.“Black Soil - Stories by Peter Bishop. Toombul Publishing $25.

A short story is attractive because it takes you on a rollercoaster ride in just one sitting. It’s a good-value literary package. Peter Bishop (BSCaGR ‘57) has clearly mastered the art of short story, and has many awards and prizes to prove it. His recent book, Black Soil, is a collection of 18 very different experiences, each one unfolding rapidly but full of surprises, humour and unashamed darkness.

Bishop describes his tales as “Stories your mother wouldn’t let you read”, “Stories you wouldn’t let your mother read” and “Stories Jesus didn’t write”. That about sums it up. He is not afraid to write about crime, murder, adultery and lust. His relationships are complex, sometimes beautiful and delicate, and sometimes violent or just plain dysfunctional. He can throw humour into a horrible situation, and in the briefest time make his characters real and interesting.

Bishop writes econmically. Not one excessive word, and very short paragraphs. This works equally well for a humorous story like ‘Pension Plan’, or a brooding story such as ‘Lukey’ (Which won first place in the Banjo Paterson Writing Award).

Each individual story that Bishop tells is a voyage worth taking, but it’s the collective journey you won’t want to miss.”

Black Soil is available to purchase from Hunt-a-Book 200 Kelly Street Scone.

This is the first photographic image of a cricket match taken in Australia and perhaps the world! The amateur photographer was Joseph Docker – pioneering pastoralist, politician, artist, stone craftsman and photographer. Curators at the Mitchell Library in Sydney believe this photograph to be highly significant due to the unusual method of using salted paper negatives. This calotype photograph of cricket is dated as the oldest of type in the world. Joseph Docker arrived in the area that was to become known as Scone when it was a twelve day journey by bullock team from Morpeth to Dartbrook!

Joseph Docker was quite an amazing man, his photography gives us a personal insight into life in the Upper Hunter 160y ears ago. He captured images with the lens of his camera obscura with an artist’s skill for composition of the subject.

The Docker boys first practised their skills on the cricket pitch in front of the homestead at Thornthwaite during the 1850’s and 1860’s. They went onto further fame and glory as

members of the Albert Cricket Club in Sydney. This prestigious cricket club competed against the best sides in the colony and was the venue for international fixtures until the opening of the Sydney Cricket ground in 1878.

A re-enactment of this historic photograph will be held on Saturday 6th October followed by the opening of the Joseph Docker

Photographic Exhibition on 7th October. This is an event for everyone to bring a picnic and celebrate with an afternoon of cricket at the historic homestead of Thornthwaite. For more information please contact Anne Davies 6545 3013.

Mt Arthur Coal training coordinator, Paul Izzard, has received a Chairman’s Award at the 2012 SkillsDMC National Conference, held in Sydney two weeks ago.Mr Izzard received the award in recognition of his outstanding achievements and commitment to workforce planning and development, and leadership in skilling new entrants and existing workers in the coal mining industry.

Mr Izzard said the award was achieved by the efforts and commitment of all trainers involved in Mt Arthur Coal’s trainee operator program.

“The training team has worked tirelessly to support and develop new trainees and up-skill existing employees to ensure Mt Arthur Coal continues to retain a safe and productive workforce as the mine continues to grow,” he said.

Peter Sharpe, NSW Energy Coal Asset President, congratulated Paul on his award, adding that the production team has worked hard to ensure the quality of the trainee operator program.

“Mt Arthur Coal has worked closely with SkillsDMC since the trainee operator program commenced in October 2006, to ensure the program is kept up-to-date with industry training requirements.

“The award win recognises our commitment to providing the best training and development opportunities for both our current employees and potential recruits from the local community,” Mr Sharpe said.

SkillsDMC is the nationally recognised advisory body on the skills and workforce development needs of the Resources and Infrastructure Industry.

The SkillsDMC Chairman’s awards recognise outstanding achievement by individuals and organisations already doing tremendous work out in the field in open cut and underground mines across Australia.

My New Pup Has Been Vaccinated But is it Really Protected?Parvovirus continues to be a problem in this area. We now see two outbreaks, one over the Christmas period and the other in July/August, so yes, we are in the middle of one now.

Its an awful disease, the pup vomits and has terrible bloody diarrhoea. The coat becomes dull and the eye sunken as the pup dehydrates.

Often the pup will die, especially if untreated. This disease is preventable by vaccination but too often people get a new pup which is not vaccinated or has its first vaccination and is then sold to its new home the same or next day. This pup is NOT protected against parvovirus.

The vaccination is not instantaneous, it takes at least a week to provide any immunity at all and pups require 2 to 3 booster vaccinations to be fully protected. Pups are often at their most vulnerable when they are being re-homed so it isn’t surprising that a number newly acquired puppies come down with the

virus, not the best start for your pup or your wallet. Rental properties which allow animals, parks and nature strips will often harbour the virus within the soil for a long time, up to five or six years.

If you are getting a new pup, make sure that it has had at least one vaccination and that this has been given seven to ten days before you take it home. Then follow your vets instructions and ensure your pup receives its booster vaccinations.

If you have had a case of parvovirus on your premises before, then you should wait until any new pup has had at least two, ideally three vaccinations and is twelve to fourteen weeks old before bringing it home with you.

When your new pup arrives, resist the

temptation to take it to public places and have your friends fawn all over it, parvovirus can be carried around on peoples shoes and a friend may unknowingly infect your puppy. It is much safer to leave the puppy at home until it has completed its vaccination course and is fully protected. Then you may take it out with confidence.

It is heartbreaking to get a new pup and then lose it a week later to Parvovirus, make sure you vaccinate correctly and ensure that heartbreak is not yours.
