AUGUST 20-21, 2016

Back to SchoolFor over 100 years, students have been educated at St. Cecilia

School. We are very proud of our past and what has been

accomplished here. Through our Catholic school, over a

quarter of a million students have been educated—through

their teachers, the religious, and their peers.

I will be doing a presentation for our teachers and also

getting into the classrooms with the students to help them

learn more about their faith and Church teachings, and how

they can put them into practice every day. Our new parochial

vicar, Fr. Jason, will also be going into the classrooms.

At St. Cecilia, we want our children to learn to respect

the dignity of everyone, including themselves. We want our

children to learn how much God loves them and wants them

to respect who they are, children of God.

Amen? Amen!

A GOSPEL REFLECTIONLUKE 13:22-30

by FATHER JASON WILLIAMSTHE PASTOR’S CORNER

“And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God.”

The question put to Jesus in the Gospel is still relevant today: “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” We, too, can look at what goes on in the world around us and wonder the same thing, but wondering about it is pretty useless if it doesn’t spur us on to some sort of action. Perhaps our Lord presents this question to us in an effort to excite our desire for salvation and to encourage us in our life of faith.

God’s plan of salvation is a mystery. We are all guilty of sin and in need of a Savior. God’s grace is available to all, yet it can be freely rejected. We can never forget that the circumstances that encompass each human life are indeed very diverse. Even so, God still opens the possibility of salvation to every single person. He has worked out our redemption from sin through the Paschal Mystery of Christ. We reach salvation by accepting that work of redemption. That acceptance occurs as we walk the path of faith in Christ and enter into life through the narrow gate.

A narrow gate is challenging to find, and diligence in living out our baptismal commitments is necessary in order to receive from God the guidance and strength to walk along the path of discipleship. In his mercy, may he flood our souls with the light of his Holy Spirit, so that we can see the steps he is calling us to take.

Why do we seek God?

God has placed in our hearts a longing to

seek and find him. St. Augustine says, “You

have made us for yourself, and our heart is

restless until it rests in you.” We call this

longing for God. – Religion. [27-30]

It is natural for man to seek God. All of our striving for truth

and happiness is ultimately a search for the one who supports

us absolutely, satisfies us absolutely, and employs us abso-

lutely in his service. A person is not completely himself until

he has found God. “Anyone who seeks truth seeks God,

whether or not he realizes it.” -St. Edith Stein

St. Joan of the Cross (1666 - 1736) An encounter with a shabby old woman many dismissed as

insane prompted St. Joan to dedicate her life to the poor. For

Joan, who had a reputation as a businesswoman intent on

monetary success, this was a significant conversion.

Born in 1666 in Anjou, France, Joan worked in the family

business—a small shop near a religious shrine—from an early

age. After her parents’ death she took over the shop herself. She

quickly became known for her greediness and insensitivity to

the beggars who often came seeking help.

That was until she was touched

by the strange woman who claimed

she was on intimate terms with the

deity. Joan, who had always been

devout, even scrupulous, became a

new person. She began caring for

needy children. Then the poor, elderly

and sick came to her. Over time she

closed the family business so she

could devote herself fully to good works and penance.

She went on to found what came to be known as the

Congregation of St. Anne of Providence. It was then she took

the religious name of Joan of the Cross. By the time of her

death in 1736 she had founded 12 religious houses, hospices

and schools. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 1982.

CHOIR LOFT: We all recognize the dedication of our choir members, but what you may not know is that they have to stand through the entire Mass because of lack of seating space. No more! Thanks to parishioner and choir member Susie Rodgers, new choir risers have been especially designed for our choir loft, built and installed over the past several weeks (photos, above). Now each choir member has his or her own individual space, folding seat, and space for music. This most generous gift was made to the Church in appreciation of our music director’s 35 years of service at St. Cecilia. 1 JUBILEE MUSEUM: Special thanks to Cody Egner for putting together the trip to the Jubilee Museum. I was overwhelmed with the many things I was able to see (photos, below). It was so much more than I could have ever imagined. Everyone seemed to enjoy the tour we received from Fr. Lutz and his assistant. I think it is well worth the trip, and hopefully we can take another group up next year. 1 CONFERENCE: I attended the Evangelization Training Camp last week in Carlinville, Ill (photo, top right). Those in attendance were from the diocese, our staff and other priests. The week-long conference gave us plenty of time for prayer and to work on ways to evangelize at our parishes. Hopefully we will be able to use this information to continue this work at our individual parishes. 1 WELCOME, CHILDREN

OF GOD: Recently, we baptized Paxton George, son of Matthew and Laura Borgman (photo, above left), and Hudson Joseph, son of Scott and Christy Sweeney (photo, above right).

Welcome! 1 GOOD NEWS! We have 5 soccer teams and a total of 64 students playing soccer (photo, left) this year. We also have two volleyball teams with a total of 20 students. The practices have just started, and I am excited about watching these teams play this year. Thank you, Matt Weisenborn, for all of your hard work! 1 CONGRATULATIONS! Jerilyn Green and Nick Meyer (photo, below

left) were married on Friday, Aug. 5, and Jessica Turner and Mac Hataway (photo, below right) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on Sat., Aug. 6.

Prayer Intentions for the Week Please keep in prayer Rose Emmerich, Lucas Hall, Graynelle & Shirley Menard, Kristin Pelletier, Janet Mason, Theresa Wilson and Bob Smith that they may receive God’s healing grace. Contact Barb Browarsky at the parish office, (513) 871-5757, ext. 202, with Mass and sanctuary devotional candle intention requests. All requests are honored for two weeks with the individual’s or family’s approval.

Forty Hours DevotionEveryone is invited to our annual Forty Hours Devotion. The opening Mass will be at 1:30 PM on Friday, Sept. 9, followed by continuous adoration until the closing service at the conclusion of 10:00 Mass on Sunday, Sept. 11. Please set aside some time in your busy weekend to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity

to prayerfully visit with the Lord in exposition in the peace and solitude of our beautiful, inspiring church. Since we must have someone present with the Lord for every hour during this event, if you are able to commit to even half-an-hour, please sign up on the sheets located on the pillars near the side entrances or on the table in the back of church. If you have any questions about sign-ups, you can call Jeff Icsman at 513-321-3089 or email at [email protected].

Confirmation PreparationThe Sacrament of Confirmation is a Sacrament of Initiation in which the candidate, sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, enters more deeply into the life of the Body of Christ, the Church.

Confirmation Mass will take place April 4, 2017. If your child is in the 7th or 8th grade and has yet to be confirmed, please sign him or her up for the appropriate Confirmation preparation classes. Students registered in St. Cecilia School will already have this preparation as a part of their religion class. Those students who do not attend St. Cecilia School should sign up for our PREP Program where Confirmation preparation will take place. Please go to our parish website and click on the link to register for PREP. Contact Cody Egner at [email protected] with any questions.

JULYAT A GLANCE

The Choir of Saint Cecilia Our parish has been blessed to have musicians willing to share their talents as cantors, instrumen-talists and choir members. The choir is open for new recruits. We are preparing now for the fall and Christmas seasons, which are great fun to sing with a variety of music.

Singing in choir does not require advanced music skills. You will learn how to read music if you don’t already know. And choir does not require a solo voice (or audition). All you need is a voice that blends with other voices, a willingness to praise God in song, and the commitment to attend Tuesday night rehearsal and Sunday morning 10 AM Mass. In return, you will discover a great group of people who love to sing and party!

There are many talented individuals in the parish who should consider being a part of the St. Cecilia music ministry. Everyone has busy schedules (including all St. Cecilia music ministers), but we

find a way to work around that. Yes, choir does require a commitment. And making commitments scares people. But try it. Then, if you find the commitment is too much, you can bow out, knowing you at least tried it and made the effort. You will be blessed.

Can you play an instrument? Instrumentalists help to augment the music program through trumpet, clarinet, violin, flute, etc. This does require the ability to read music. Think of the gift you can give to the parish with your talent.

Would you like to cantor at Mass? This does require the ability to read and prepare music. Contact Bob Kellison for audition times.

No one joins unless asked. So consider this a personal invitation. In return for your participation, you are guaranteed to acquire a level of personal accomplishment and a measure of satisfaction in your spiritual life you can’t find elsewhere.

Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30 PM, beginning Tuesday, August 30. Think about it and contact Bob Kellison at 871-5757, ext. 208, or [email protected].
