SEVEN 2-year-old winners in 2010

Jerry Hollendorfer walked out of Saratoga Race Course and took a good long look around. Music played from Siro’s, fans funneled out and one veteran horse trainer exhaled.

“I’m glad to get it done,” Hollendorfer said sim-ply.

Hollendorfer shipped Blind Luck from Del Mar to take on the East Coast’s best Devil May Care, on her home turf. It was an audacious move. And it worked.

Hollendorfer’s move was pragmatic – there are no main-track spots for Blind Luck at Del Mar. It was also aggressive – Eclipse Awards are won in Saratoga.

Blind Luck won for the ninth time in her career, for the fifth time this year and for the fifth time from five career starts on the dirt.

Hollendorfer looked down at his pants and shoes.“I got mud all over me,” Hollendorfer said. “I guess

it doesn’t matter.”

Blind Luck made sure nothing mattered with an-other patented rally to win the Grade I Alabama, the summer classic for 3-year-old fillies and take a white-knuckle grip of the 3-year-old filly title race.

Hollendorfer wanted the Grade I Kentucky Oaks and the Grade I Alabama for Blind Luck. Those were his two goals at the beginning of the year; she won both and also took the Grade I Las Virgenes, Grade II Fantasy and Grade II Delaware Oaks.

Owned by Mark DeDomenico, John Carver, Peter Abruzzo and Hollendorfer, the daughter of Pollard’s Vision needed every inch of the Delaware Oaks, Ken-tucky Oaks and Las Virgenes, winning nose photos in the final stride. The Alabama was easy – for her – she won by a neck.

The field broke in a line and in an instant it turned

into a five on one zone defense. Joel Ro-sario eased Blind Luck to the rail and on her own. Acting Happy stayed off the rail, squeezing Devil May Care slightly, Tizahit held her position to her outside, Connie And Michael stayed in the firing line while Jeremy Rose guided Havre de Grace to the inside, in a cozy spot in fifth.

Into the first turn, Acting Happy held the lead, well off the rail, with Tizahit to her outside and Connie And Michael widest of all in third. John Velazquez ratcheted Devil May Care into fourth while Havre de Grace found a comfort-able spot in fifth. Blind Luck rated kind-ly in last, 2 lengths off the peloton.

Acting Happy led the packed quintet through an easy quarter of 24.03 and a half in 49.45. Longshot Tizahit stalked in second and Connie And Michael tracked to her outside. Havre de Grace sat in a pocket in fourth with Devil May Care outside in fifth. And, yes, Blind Luck trailed. Nothing changed through three quarters in 1:14.81.

And then everything changed. In a matter of strides, Devil May Care

and Havre de Grace moved, trying to get the jump on an expected rally from Blind Luck. Connie And Michael back-pedaled. Tizahit followed her retreat.

In the middle of the turn, Jose Lezca-no pumped Acting Happy, Rose asked Havre de Grace, Velazquez stoked Dev-il May Care. That’s how potent Blind Luck’s kick has proven to be over her 13-race career, Rosario sat the quiet-

est of the four and he had 3 lengths to find.

At the quarter pole, Acting Happy clung to her knitting on the rail. Havre de Grace split horses and was rallying. Devil May Care circled in the three lane but was under more pressure than ex-pected.

All the while, the hawk circled. Blind Luck roared past Connie And Michael and Tizahit and had the passing lane to herself, if she could pass. Acting Happy and Havre de Grace, trained by broth-

ers Rick and Tony Dutrow, kicked clear of favorite Devil May Care who found nothing.

Passing the eighth pole, Devil May Care was finished, Havre de Grace fi-nally got the measure of Acting Happy – and Blind Luck had them all. She de-voured ground to collar Havre de Grace and win by a neck. She galloped out with her ears pricked, finishing 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.89.

Rosario remained undefeated on the filly; he won a starter allowance on her all

the way back in July 2009 and the Dela-ware Oaks this summer. This made three.

“On the first turn, she was going re-ally easily so I knew they were going slowly, I let her do whatever she wants. Turning for home, I said, ‘I’m going to get them for sure.’ I hadn’t asked until the quarter pole,” Rosario said. “She picks it up, picks it up, picks it up. She travels to every track and keeps going. She’s easy to ride, you have to know the pace, then it’s easy.”

For DeDomenico, Blind Luck is the culmination of more than 40 years in the business. The retired heart surgeon owns Pegasus Training and Equine Re-habilitation Center in Redmond, Wash-ington.

“It’s the same feeling every time, you always worry that she’s not going to fire and then she does. When she got beat in California, it was a slow pace, she was closing but she couldn’t close that fast. She’s never had a bad day, you only get one,” DeDomenico said. “I’ve been in the business for over 40 years, we had Bwana Bull in the Derby but we knew he wasn’t going to win. This horse has a chance every time the gate opens, she’s going to try. It’s a tough business. They are very few. Very few. Every time, she comes to run. I know you only get one.”

Hollendorfer helped engineer the purchase of Blind Luck after the $11,000 yearling won her 2-year-old debut at Calder by 13 1/4 lengths for Juvenal Diaz and trainer James Hatch-ett. Hollendorfer said that his group beat another group by 15 minutes to get the deal done. She’s now 9-for-13, with two second and two thirds for over $1.8 million.

“We gave quite a bit more mon-ey than the maiden 40 she ran in, we weren’t the only ones in there trying to give money for her, we got lucky to get her in the first place,” Hollendorfer said. “We always liked her, the way she trained. It hasn’t surprised me she’s been this consistent.”

Hollendorfer made his living domi-nating northern California racing and has gradually carved a foothold in southern California racing. He hired former Bobby Frankel assistant Dan Ward, and things have begun to come together. Blind Luck can only help.

“We’re doing lots of traveling, it’s worth trying to build the stable in south-ern California, it’s been working out pretty good. I used to be able to run all my horses in Northern California, they had a lot of stakes but the deterioration of racing forced me to do something else,” Hollendorfer said. “This filly makes a big difference. There’s usually plenty of races in California but not for 3-year-old fillies on the dirt, there’s no

dirt races, there’s no synthetic races. Del Mar is all turf for 3-year-old fillies and 3-year-old colts. She’s just one of those horses that can do it every time. There’s no explanation to it. I just let it be.”

He’s had good fillies before – Lite Light, Hystericalady, Pike Place Dancer – but refuses to put a burden on Blind Luck.

“I’ve had a lot of stakes winning fil-lies, each horse is different,” Hollendor-fer said. “I don’t like to compare them that much. Each horse has their own way of doing things.”

Hollendorfer wants to win the Eclipse Award with Blind Luck and knew he had to topple Devil May Care in the Alabama at Saratoga.

“Everything looks good now, it’s a relief,” Hollendorfer said. “I was pretty relaxed today, when you see her laying that close on a slow pace, you don’t know if she can close it down but at least she had a chance, the boy rode a really smart race.”

After traveling to Oaklawn Park, Churchill Downs, Delaware Park and now Saratoga, Blind Luck will get a short freshening before perhaps taking another trip to Philadelphia Park for the Fitz Dixon Cotillion Oct. 2. If she wins that, then it’s on to the Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs.

In the Trustees’ Room after the Ala-bama, Hollendorfer joked with breeder Dr. Bill Baker.

“I’ll try to get some weight on her to make you feel better, we know she’s a little bit light,” Hollendorfer said.

Baker wasn’t worried.“Well, she keeps firing them off,”

Baker said. “I’ve been following her around the country, doesn’t have a pimple on her, doesn’t wear bandages. I breed four to six a year, that’s a high percentage rate.”

Hollendorfer has been doing that his whole life.

Moments after Hollendorfer had won his first race at Saratoga, NYRA’s Charlie Hayward made a suggestion to the fourth all-time winningest trainer in history.

“Now we’ve got to get you in that little building across the street.”

Hollendorfer took a sip of his Diet Coke.

“Where?”“The Hall of Fame.”“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Hol-

lendorfer said. Blind Luck is a lock.

Just three months past his 41st birth-day, trainer Carlos Martin put some old-time horsemanship on display

in Saturday’s opener at Saratoga Race Course.

The Brooklyn-born Martin, son of late trainer Jose Martin and grandson of 84-year-old Hall of Famer Frank “Pancho” Martin, took a page from the family book with Writingonthewall.

Just seven days after Writingonthe-wall went gate-to-wire to capture an optional claiming allowance on the turf, the 5-year-old E Dubai gelding, owned by Carl Lizza’s Flying Zee Stable, was back in the winner’s circle.

“It was a little ambitious coming back in a week, but Mr. Lizza’s here and he loves racing at Saratoga,” Martin said. “He said, ‘We need to win some races and run some of these horses.’ I said, ‘Let’s get aggressive.’ The horse came

out of his last race well. That’s some-thing I learned from my dad, God rest his soul – he was a great trainer – and my grandfather. Sometimes, you have to go by instinct. So many times nowadays, people are committed to the fact where they’re going to get criticized if they do things unorthodoxed. That’s the way it used to be years ago. They used to run the horses when they were doing well. Now, if you don’t give them five weeks, you’re doing something wrong.”

It was the third win in six starts this year for Writingonthewall, and third of the meet for Martin, who credited the 72-year-old Lizza with giving him un-wavering support. Lizza owns Land-mark Builders, a developer of housing and office projects.

“Sometimes, I feel it in my gut, and I’ve got a good owner who lets me do whatever I have to do,” Martin said. “Mr. Lizza has never questioned me.

He usually goes along. He’ll give his opinion and he’s been in the game for 40 years and knows what he’s talking about, so I listen a lot to him. He’s been one of my mentors in the game. But, he gives me free rein to run when I want to run the horses.”

Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado, his regular rider, was able to get away alone on Writingonthewall through easy frac-tions of :24.45, :48.91 and 1:12.40 be-fore pulling away in the stretch for a three-quarter-length win.

“He gets along so good with this horse. He did the same thing last week,” Martin said. “When the one horse [Ro-mans Reward] took back, I was really feeling it. I thought that horse was go-ing to be difficult with the pace factor, but it never materialized and Edgar put them to sleep. He’s great at doing that; getting horses to relax on the lead.”

Same place next week?“It’d be nice,” Martin said. “I’ll take

it.” • After watching Morning Line han-

dle winners with ease in Saturday’s fifth race, Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito is thinking big.

“I’d like to run him in a race called the Pennsylvania Derby,” Zito said. “Why not?”

The 3-year-old Tiznow colt got out cleanly from the gate and relaxed on the lead with jockey John Velazquez, coast-ing along in splits of :24.48, :48.16 and 1:12.62.

Picking up his fourth consecutive vic-tory on the card, Velazquez gave Morn-ing Line his cue as they hit the straight-away, and he responded by sprinting away to hit the wire 11 lengths in front.

Three weeks earlier, Morning Line was bumped at the break and was forced three wide on the second turn in

a similar 9-furlong dirt allowance.“The last time, he kind of grabbed his

quarter and ran around the track,” Zito said. “Once he got a clean break, he was in good shape. Everything worked out good, the way he broke and how he got away from them. It was all good. He’s got a future.”

Purchased for $700,000 at Keenel-and’s September yearling sale in 2008 for the Thoroughbred Legends Racing Stable, Morning Line didn’t make his debut until last November at Aqueduct, running fourth. He was off until May

22, finishing second at Monmouth Park, five weeks before breaking his maiden there by 8 lengths.

Saturday’s win was the second over older horses for Morning Line, who would face straight 3-year-olds in the Grade II $1 million Pennsylvania Derby Sept. 25 at Philadelphia Park.

“We always liked him,” Zito said. “He was one of our better horses. He had all kinds of issues, shins and this and that. That’s what happens with young horses sometimes. Hopefully, this will work out. We’ll see what hap-pens. We’ll take a big step the next time. He’s not a bad horse. This was a good field he beat today.”

• One of the perks of owning Thor-

oughbreds is picking their names. Linda Rice took her opportunity to make a statement.

The defending Saratoga training champion saddled We Need V L T’s, a 3-year-old Freud filly making her career debut in Saturday’s third race.

Ridden by Velazquez and sent off at odds of 5-1, We Need V L T’s out-finished Elsaroarin down the stretch to win the 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint by a neck in 1:03.33.

“Well, you know I’m a New York girl and New York racing concerns me,” Rice said. “I just thought it was a fun name, and I wanted to get it out there.”

The state has long delayed the in-stallation of video lottery terminals, or VLTs, at Aqueduct, a project that is expected to pump millions of dollars in annual revenue to purses at all three New York Racing Association tracks.

Rice believes that a deal will get done and provide a much-needed lift to the sagging horse industry.

“I’m optimistic, yes,” she said. “I just hope somebody’s watching. Let’s get it done.”

•  About  two  hours  later,  Rice  was

back in the winner’s circle for her other favorite client – her father.

City Sneakers, owned by Clyde Rice, returned from an 11-month layoff to wire the seventh race, a 1 1/16-mile claimer on the inner turf course. Father and daughter also teamed up to win Fri-day’s opener with Sextant.

“It’s great,” Linda Rice said. “My father has been my oldest, longest sup-

porter and client, family and friend. It’s terrific to win for him.”

First on the also-eligible list, City Sneakers drew into the race with the early scratch of Dr. Alex. A gelded 5-year-old son of multiple graded stakes-winner City Zip, City Sneakers had been off since running seventh of 10 in an optional claiming allowance last Sept. 26 at Belmont Park.

“He had to have a little surgery here and there, so we cleaned him up,” Rice said, “frankly, much like his father did. I trained his father, too, and he had a few of the same problems. “I was kind of glad we drew in and the weather was good. I had him in last week on the grass and it rained and came off, and he’s just so much better on the turf. I had pre-ferred to run him shorter first time back off such a long layoff, but it came off last week, and then we got stuck in the AEs, but it all worked out.”

•  Based  on  breeding  and  training, trainer Todd Pletcher couldn’t wait to get Curlinello to the races.

The chestnut Edward P. Evans home-bred is by Smart Strike, the sire of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, Canadi-an Horse of the Year Soaring Free, turf champion English Channel and Lookin

At Lucky, who parlayed his 2009 juvenile male cham-pionship into Preakness and Haskell wins this year.

“He’s an exciting prospect,” Pletcher said, after Curlinello ran down stablemate Joe Vann to win his debut in Saturday’s second race by a neck.

Out of the Pleasant Colony mare Colonella, Curl-inello had been working steadily at Saratoga since late May for his unveiling. Joe Vann, owned by Zayat Stables, made his debut at Saratoga July 24, running wide and finishing sixth.

“He’s been training well, and he acts like the kind of horse that more ground is going to help,” Pletcher said of the winner. “It set up the way we thought it would. We thought the other colt would show more speed with the blinkers on second time out.”

The win was Pletcher’s meet-leading 20th in 73 starts, six more than Linda Rice. Pletcher also has 17 seconds.

“You hate to finish first and second,” Pletcher said, “because you always feel that you maybe could have won another race.”

• There are times when trainer Al Stall has to check the foal papers for J.B.’s Thunder to make sure he’s still just a 2-year-old.

“He’s a smart horse,” Stall said. “He does every-thing, literally, like an old horse. He looks like an old horse. He’s got wonderful legs, he’s perfectly sound. He’s kind of an old-school type of horse for some rea-son. We’re excited about him now.”

Making his career debut in Saturday’s eighth race, J.B.’s Thunder ran like an old pro, settling on the lead under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan and having plenty left to keep any late challengers at bay in winning the 1 1/16-mile maiden event on the Mellon Turf Course.

“In the first turn, when they let him jog out there, I felt pretty good,” Stall said. “He’s got a lot of miles in him. He was almost ready to run at the end of

Churchill, so he’s had an extra month and a half to work on his foundation. He has a little turf breeding, and we thought he’d have a better chance to win as opposed to those fast, short races that they have here. He worked really well on the turf here a couple of weeks ago, and we took a chance.”

Owned by Columbine Stable, J.B.’s Thunder is a bay son of Thunder Gulch, the 1995 champion 3-year-old colt. Stall plans to bring him back during Keenel-and’s fall meet, either on turf or synthetics.

“Things come to him real easy,” he said. “All he’s done is physically grow on us all summer long, so that’s why I’ve taken my time with him. I looked at him one day and he looked like he was a couple of inches taller than he was the day before. He’s that kind of horse.”

• Back  in Saratoga after  spending  last  summer at Delaware Park, trainer Neil Howard picked up his first victory of the meet in Saturday’s ninth race.

Zapster, a 3-year-old Ghostzapper colt owned by Dogwood Stable, led from start to finish to win the 1 1/8-mile claiming race in 1:48.42 on the inner turf. It

was the fifth win of the day for Velazquez. It was the first win in five starts this year for Zap-

ster, and first in three tries since joining Howard’s barn in the spring. Racing wide on both turns, Zapster was seventh of eight at Saratoga Aug. 8.

• Rice picked up her third winner of the day with Recharged in the finale. A 3-year-old Macho Uno geld-ing also owned by her father, Clyde, Recharged drew into the 5 1/2-furlong maiden turf sprint with the early scratch of Dixielore. Rice moved past Chad Brown into second in the trainer standings with 14 wins.

• Velazquez became the second jockey of the meet to win five races on a single card, joining Javier Cas-tellano, who captured five in a row July 25. Velazquez opened a four-win lead on Castellano in the standings, 37-33, scoring with Curlinello in the second race, We Need V L T’s in the third, Callide Valley in the fourth, Morning Line in the fifth and Zapster in the ninth. Velazquez was also second with Pretty Boy Freud in the first, Bold Vindication in the seventh and Peat Bay in the finale.

“I could not sleep, I was full of anticipation. I could not wait to get to the racetrack. I paced the paddock. My mouth was dry. I had a knot in my stomach. But I was in awe of my horse. My heart pounded. I thought the gates would never open. I thought the pace was too fast. I thought the jockey moved too soon. I thought we still had a chance. I screamed at the top of my lungs. I pumped my fists. I jumped for joy. I won! I hugged my family. I thought my dad would be proud. I congratulated my partners. I called my friends. I lost my voice. I stood in the winner’s circle. I celebrated. that night, i dreamed of doing

it all over again…”

Handicappers study data for improvement in hors-es. The clues are in the running lines, speed figures, chart comments, replays and other evidence.

Trainers, they look at the horses – and wonder. Did she eat last night? Does his coat look OK? Do I work him long, short, turf, dirt? Is she fresh or crabby? Did that last race move him up or knock him out?

Graham Motion and Rusty Arnold look at their 3-year-old fillies in today’s Woodford Reserve Lake Placid and see improvement, maturity, confidence – talent for sure – but hopefully a little more.

Check The Label (Motion) and It’s Tea Time (Ar-nold) are two of the six standouts in the $150,000 stakes, a Grade II at 1 1/8 miles on the inner turf. The day’s fourth race (2:39 p.m.) could be a launching pad to much more for any of the half-dozen, though Check The Label carries the gaudiest credentials.

“Graham’s filly is absolutely the horse to beat,” said Arnold. “She doesn’t have a bad race in her, but it’s a tough group. Every horse in the race is coming off a

pretty good race, which is what you get at Saratoga.”Making her first start since being sold to Lael

Stable by owner/breeder Brereton Jones, Check The Label rides a three-race winning streak with victories in the Grade III Appalachian at Keeneland, the Grade II Sands Point at Belmont and the Grade III Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs. The margin of victory im-proved with each win, as did Motion’s opinion of the

daughter of Stormin Fever. The filly’s season can be divided in half. She lost all three starts at Gulfstream Park this winter – and hasn’t lost since.

“She’s changed a lot, really matured a lot from 2 to 3 and even from January to now,” said Motion, who named Ramon Dominguez on the 7-5 favorite.

“A lot of it is maturity, and a lot of it is just getting out of Gulfstream and get-ting on fairer turf courses for her. Her Gulfstream races (one in the slop, two on the turf) weren’t bad, but clearly she took a step up when she got on other turf courses.”

Check The Label came to Motion’s barn at Fair Hill Training Center as a 2-year-old. She got ready quickly, evi-denced by a trip to Woodbine for a 4 1/2-furlong maiden try in June. She finished ninth on the Polytrack (more blame goes to the distance than the sur-face, Motion said) and then won eas-ily in a 1-mile turf maiden at Colonial Downs. A first-level allowance win at Churchill Downs in November signaled

even more talent, as did a runner-up try in the Caressing Stakes at Churchill.

“I couldn’t have said she was this kind of filly, I liked her enough that she was ready early, but I wasn’t sure how good she was,” Motion said. “She won pretty impressively that day at Churchill and really didn’t run a bad race in the stakes. But clearly I didn’t know she was this kind of filly.”

In 2010, Check The Label made sure her trainer found out. She trained bet-ter, became a workout demon, found a way to harness and focus her energy.

“She’s more professional now, better in the morning, better in her training, she has more confidence in herself,” Motion said. “I see it. She used to want to get fairly upset about things and now she doesn’t. She’s got a neat personality now, she likes the training, enjoys the

work. Physically and mentally, she’s a much different horse than she was. She’s been very, very relaxed here, very professional. She used to want to get wound up.”

Check The Label truly arrived in the Virginia Oaks, sitting last of eight behind slow fractions of 25.64, 51.82 and 1:16.18 before zooming past ev-eryone to win by almost 3 lengths.

“She broke kind of awkwardly, broke out a little bit, Ramon had no plans to be so far back and had a deci-sion to make – just leave her alone and be in the back or get after her a bit,” said Motion. “He left her alone. They went extremely slowly and it didn’t matter. We always talk about horses getting in trouble but the good ones get out of trouble because they’re quicker, they can run out of it.”

Arnold’s filly It’s Tea Time ran out trouble herself in the allowance score here Aug. 1, overcoming a crowd-ed start, a spot far back in an 11-horse field and a four-wide slingshot move at the top of the stretch. The daughter of Dynaformer passed eight horses in the

stretch and won by a half-length while gearing down for Julien Leparoux, back aboard today at 10-1.

Owned and bred by Alex Campbell, she returns on three weeks rest but is fresh and happy.

“Those kinds of races are always good confidence builders when they finish up strong and gallop out strong – I liked that part of it,” said Arnold. “I didn’t do a ton with her between races, one little easy breeze (a half-mile in 52 on the Oklahoma one week out) but that’s all she needed.”

Unraced at 2, It’s Tea Time broke her maiden going 9 furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream in February, then finished second by a neck to Evening Jewel in the Grade I Ashland on Polytrack at Keenel-

and. She finished ninth behind Alabama winner Blind Luck and Evening Jewel after getting stuck on the rail in the Kentucky Oaks, her only dirt start. Back on the turf, she finished fourth in Churchill’s Grade III Regret going a mile.

Next came the Saratoga race, which Arnold hoped to use as a bridge to the Lake Placid. It’s Tea Time delivered, and earned another stakes start.

“I know it was an a-other-than and we could prob-ably look for a two-other-than, but she’s good right

now and the 3-year-old turf fillies are going to have to take on older horses soon enough,” he said. “She’s run some pretty good races this year and we were happy with that last race.”

• Each filly in the race exits a strong effort in her most recent start.

Shadwell Stable’s Hatheer stretches from a 7-fur-long allowance win at Belmont July 15 and breaks from the inside. The homebred daughter of Storm Cat and $1.6 million earner Golden Apples gets a return call from Alan Garcia and is 6-1 on the morning line.

Bobby Flay’s Triple Cream finished second in the Desert Vixen Stakes at Monmouth July 24, owns a Grade III placing and gets blinkers for the first time. Jimmy Toner trains the daughter of Tapit, who is 5-1 with Rajiv Maragh named to ride.

Robert Masterson’s Exclusive Love finished second in Saratoga’s Grade II Lake George July 28, missing by less than a length at 57-1. Trained in Canada by Mark Casse, the daughter of Bernstein won her turf debut at Woodbine June 25. Shaun Bridgmohan rides at 9-2.

Canadian-based trainer Roger Attfield won the Lake George with Perfect Shirl, but sends her capable understudy No Explaining. The Irish-bred daughter of Azamour finished third in the Lake George and counts three turf victories in her seven-start career. She won going 1 1/8 miles at Woodbine July 10. John Velazquez rides for owner Harlequin Ranches at 7-2.

City Broad steps into the $70,000 Union Avenue this afternoon with plen-ty of Saratoga connections and reasons to think she may add to what has been a very nice campaign for trainer Bruce Levine.

Saratoga Springs-based Parting Glass Racing owns the 5-year-old City Zip mare, who missed all of 2009, and is 4-2-0 with a $163,500 in earnings in six starts this year.

“She’s been more than dependable,” Levine said. “We’ve had a really good year with her so far. She’s a hard-knock-er. She tries hard every time.”

City Broad faces eight others, includ-ing the 3-year-old Shine Upon, in the 6-furlong race for New York-breds on the main track.

The field of nine includes Padua Stables’ La Concerto, the slight favorite at 3-1 who captured a New York-bred stakes at Finger Lakes last month for trainer Steve Asmussen; two from Jim-my Jerkens, Karakorum Fugitive and

Shine Upon; R Betty Graybull; Gold For The Queen, who was second to La Concerto in the Arctic Queen after win-ning the Susan B. Anthony; and Meese Rocks, winner of three of six starts this year.

It took City Broad eight tries to break her maiden, which she did as a 3-year-old in 2008. She came back ready to run in February – despite more than 14 months on the shelf – and rolled to a 5 1/2-furlong allowance score at Aque-duct under Ramon Dominguez, who re-turns to the saddle today. She won again in March and was finally beaten April 23 in a troubled trip. Levine sent her to Monmouth and she finished second but was placed first by disqualification May 30. After another allowance win at Monmouth, she was beaten a neck in a three-other-than optional claimer there.

“She’s doing good,” Levine said. “We ran her a few times at Monmouth and each race she seemed to get a little better, so we figured we’d take a shot in a New York-bred stake. Tod Marks

City Broad was on the pace in her last two starts, which is not necessarily her running style.

“She was kind of down inside the last couple times and left running, but she doesn’t have to do that,” Levine said. “She’s very versatile and can do what she wants”

City Broad made her only start at Saratoga in 2008, finishing fourth, when under the care of trainer John Morrison. She returns to the hometown of her syndicate in a race where she is very much a contender.

Shine Upon makes another try against older fillies and mares. The daughter of Congaree was unbeaten in her first three starts late last year and through two scores this winter at Aqueduct. The win streak ended when she was second in an open-company optional claimer July 11. She finished third in the Fleet Indian for state-breds here July 30 at 7 furlongs.

Jerkens said he would have preferred to run against 3-year-olds last time, but went into the stakes because he didn’t think a 3-year-old race would fill. It did. Shine Upon, co-owned by Blue Bison Stable, takes on her elders again and Jerkens said he thinks she fits.

“She’s going to have to run better than she did last time, that’s for sure,” he said. “I think she will. She’s worked very good since then.”

Trainer Charlton Baker ships Gold For The Queen to Saratoga to make her

eighth consecutive stakes start. Francis Paolangeli’s five-time winner will depart Finger Lakes at 4 Monday morning.

“She’s doing great, she’s matured this year and is running better this year, she always had the potential, she always worked fast but she finally has it to-gether,” Baker said from his barn at the harness track. “She’s an extremely big filly and it took time for her to develop, we gave her enough time to do that. I’m afraid to bring her here because these stalls are so small and she’s so big, so she’ll ship in Monday morning. She used to go crazy in the holding barn so that’s a big plus too.”

Gold For The Queen has six breezes listed on her form, all bullets at Fin-ger Lakes and has won five of 18 ca-reers starts while earnings more than $215,000 (as a $2,000 yearling pur-chase).

“She’s getting better, you could see her maturing last fall and she’s come back great this year. I was expecting that, she was always fast as a 2-year-old and I knew she was going to be good. She always had the talent and now she has it all together. I knew she wasn’t a morning glory, she was composed, she had the ability, but she was just big and needed to get it together.”

•  The  Union  Avenue  (seventh  race) shares feature-race status with the $70,000 Bennington, a turf sprint for fillies and mares and eighth race on the card.

Paul Pompa’s Rose Catherine rates a deserving heavy favorite at 3-5 on the morning line based on three wins in four starts this year. Her only loss came

in the Grade III Appalachian to Check The Label, the favorite in Sunday’s Lake Placid. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Rose Catherine finsihed second to Tapitsfly in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last fall and comes off a stakes win in Mon-mouth Park’s Mongo Queen July 31. Javier Castellano has the ride on the daughter of Speightstown.

Six line up to tackle the favorite, including Mongo Queen runner-up Spiteful Gypsy, Delaware Park shipper Ready To Sting, July 16 allowance win-ner Aegean, two-time Presque Isle win-ner Malibu Moon Dance and three-time winner Right To Rule.

30 Sunday, August 22, 2010

My friend George Baker finally made the trip to Saratoga, after I’ve been touting, begging, imploring him since we met on the gallops in England so many years ago. We hit it off immediately and the Bakers have become my drop zone when I go to England.

England has Cheltenham. We have Saratoga. Baker and his friend/assistant Pat Murphy (and their

wives Candida and Val) have showed me Cheltenham, the way it’s meant to be done and I’ve tried to recip-rocate. If you don’t like Cheltenham or Saratoga, save yourself the trouble and find another sport.

Turf Club for lunch at Cheltenham. Third-floor din-ing room at Saratoga. Second-to-last down the hill in the Queen Mother at Cheltenham. Sixteenth pole of the Alabama at Saratoga. Pint of Guinness in the Guin-ness Village at Cheltenham. Cup of tea at the Morn-ing Line Kitchen at Saratoga. Brisk, misty mornings at Cheltenham. Brisk, misty mornings at Saratoga.

Baker, training a burgeoning string of flat horses and jumpers, puts me on two sets before we go rac-ing at Cheltenham. It’s a good way to clear the head after a long day at the races and pubs and it’s all hands on deck when it’s Cheltenham time. At Saratoga, I put him on the “golf buggy” and we travel the Saratoga backstretch, perhaps for the same reason. It’s debat-able who’s worse, I as an exercise rider or Baker as a paperboy. If you saw loose Specials Saturday morning, blame the bloke with his blue and white “trainers” on

tourist’s viewby Sean Clancy

cupofcoffeethe golfcart dashboard instead of on the loose papers at his feet.

“George, that’s Rachel Alexandra. We’ll sit here on the turn and wait for her to gallop past.”

Last year’s Horse of the Year plies her trade, tough-er in the morning than in years past, she’s gearing up for her run in the Personal Ensign. In England, horses train head-to-tail, up a short, half-mile gallop, allowing the hill to hold the horse. Rachel’s exercise rider needed that hill Saturday morning. She had him one wrong move from gone. Baker was gobsmacked.

“George, that’s Quality Road.”Quality Road walks past, the Adonis of the backside,

he awes at the walk. The shock of forelock shrouding his eyes, the forever hip, the calculation of every move. The golf buggy stops and we watch him cross Union Avenue, just as so many greats have done in the past.

“George, that’s Fly Down on the outside, he’s a good 3-year-old, getting ready for the Travers.”

Neck bowed, head down, Fly Down breezes an easy half over the Oklahoma training track, cruising past, in 48.35 seconds. Long stride, fluid as a stream.

“George, this is Clare Court.”The golf buggy dips under the tunnel of the Nelson

Avenue turn of the pony track, up the other side, like going back in time. The trees, the space, the light. Mike Hushion’s barn, my favorite on the grounds, raked and shaked, keeping the standard. Bobby Ribaudo’s barn, not as grand, but just as functional. Open air stalls. It’s good enough for Grand Couturier.

“George, this is the Annex. Used to be strictly jumpers, now it’s mostly flat horses except for Shep-pard and Voss.”

Lead Us Not and Divine Fortune, old homebred jumpers, mingle with Forever Together and Fantasia,

Augustin turf icons. Two dogs, tied together, wrestle in the shedrow. Sheppard says he’s not in charge of the dogs. Tom Voss usually wins three jump races at the meet, this year he’s won three flat races including the John’s Call. Voss rides past on The Looper, the clos-est thing to John’s Call. From the Annex, we deliver papers to Shadwell’s private stable. Baker’s thinking, ‘I wonder how I could get this yard when I make my Saratoga invasion next summer.’

“George, this is Blame. He’s the best older horse in the country right now.”

The Whitney winner goes about his business like a soldier. Completely at ease with himself and his sur-roundings, ‘it’s my world.’ We have seen him develop from Curlin winner at 3 to Whitney winner – and lead-er in the clubhouse – at 4.

“George, that’s A Little Warm breezing, he’s one of the best 3-year-olds here, getting better all the time.”

The Jim Dandy winner stretches his legs, going five-eighths over the main track in 1:01.58, ninth fastest at the distance, one week away from the Travers. No horse is doing better than A Little Warm.

“George, this is the Reading Room. It’s a private club, we’ve been invited to a cocktail party. Just act like you’ve known Carl and Jen forever.”

Pat, my nephew Jack, George and I stroll through the gates of the Reading Room. They check their cell phones to make sure they’re off. George looks around and you can see he’s starting to like this place. ‘What happens here the rest of the year?’ Nothing. Only open during the six-week meet. He nods, meets Carl and Jen and takes a mini quiche from the tray. I slip out to go to work, he’s talking to Jen’s father like he’s known him all his life, then he mingles with Shug, Henry and Brendan. I think George likes it here.
