Short story by Murray McQuie When I went to the Nullabor 40 years ago, to manage Rawlinna Station, I met two old characters I want to tell you about. One—named Peter was a Scotsman, who during the second world war had been a navy diver—swimming into enemy ports and attaching limpet mines to enemy ships. He survived this to demobilise in Australia. Some time later found him in the Northern Territory, in various Station roles. One time a saddler, another a water borer, and stockman. Water boring must have interested him as back in South Australia he built a cable operated bor-ing rig on the back of a “Blitz” truck which was vastly overloaded when all the drilling tools and bits were loaded. He obtained a contract to bore for water on the Nullabor, with a company that had just taken up 4000 sq miles of pastoral lease out from Rawlinna Siding in WA. He loaded the rig and his swat on the “Tea and Sugar” train bound for Rawlinna. His first bore was a success; the site becom-ing the Rawlinna Station Homestead. Peter went on to drill dozens of water bores on the Nullabor and became well known and respected for his ability to produce water. However, this wasn’t his only achievement! He took up a lease of land north of the railway line and called it Kinclaven after his family home in Scotland. After drilling a successful water bore for himself he consulted his financial situation and bought a small number of heifers from the Pilbara. When they arrived he was alarmed to find a bull with them, as he could only afford the heifers. Upon enquiry of the Pilbara pastoralists the answer he got was ‘heifers are no use without a bull, so I threw one in’, this was the start of a herd which numbers about 6000 today. The tough life unfortunately took a toll on Peter and he had a heart attack which he survived, to retire in Rawlinna township, from where he could keep an eye on his son on the station. On the advice of his doctor to exercise, he took up the bagpipes, teaching himself to play to exercise his lungs. He even made an airbag for the pipes from a kangaroo hide—using his old leather-working skills. He enjoyed travelling on the ‘Indian Pacific’ train from Rawlinna to Kalgoorlie to play with the pipe band there, entertaining the passengers along the way. I met him at the Railway Station one day as he disembarked from such a trip, only to find him cursing the train conductor, who apparently had taken his ticket. “The miserable bastard took me ticket, I have only had 5 trips on it” The usual procedure was for Peter to show the ticket, then put it back in his wallet! The other bloke of whom I write was Dave. Dave came from farming country in South Australia, and together with an adult son took up a ease east of Rawlinna Siding and south of the railway line. This lease had previously been taken up in the 1960’2 but had been relinquished after the then leasee had sunk a couple of successful bores. Dave and his son got to work equipping a bore with an electric submersible pump, then fencing a paddock around it before introducing sheep from the family farm. As time progressed the sheep outgrew the available water and space and all the original bores were stocked. By this time, Dave was getting crippled up in the hips and used to come and go back to South Australia.

15

15

Dave’s son purchased a boring plant (cable operated rig) and set about drilling for more water to expand the Station. Whenever time permitted, he would put in a day or two operating the boring plant and he slowly punched a hole down through the limestone, until disaster struck—he jammed the bit in the hole and couldn’t free it. Dave happened to be back at the Station around this time and somehow convinced Peter to come out and put his expertise to freeing the offending drill bit, which had defied all other effort. This day I write of, Peter duly pulled up at the Station and picked up Dave to direct him to the bore site and offer any assistance that might be required. These two old codgers set off and on arrival at the first gate Peter pulled up, and as is customary in the bush, Dave prepared to get out to open the gate. He was having such difficulty with his hips that Peter volunteered to open the gate. “Hang on Dave, I’ll get the gate”. The reply was—”If I can’t open the gate, we won’t go drilling”. The gate was negotiated and the pair continued on to the bore site where Peter walked all around, studying the boring plant (which was a bit different to his old unit) and when satisfied, he stepped up to the big old motor and proceeded to crank start it. He was puffing and blowing when Dave woke up to what he was doing, and fearful that Peter was about to have another heart attack he yelled out “Hang on Peter, I can crank start the motor”. The reply was “If I can’t start the bloody motor, we won’t be drilling” Great Characters. Thanks so much Murray McQuie for sending this story in to us.
