In the Heights, Chasing Broadway DreamsAUGUST 7, 8 PMBefore Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote and starred in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical In the Heights. This documentary chronicles the personal stories of Miranda and the cast of In the Heights in the months leading up to its 2008 opening night.

Much Ado About NothingAUGUST 14, 8 PMYou only think you have seen every possible version of this classic Shakespeare comedy. This one, recorded during its fi nal week at Free Shakespeare in the Park in New York, is set in contemporary Messina, Georgia. Revenge, trickery, romantic retribution and miscommunication run amok. Featured are Danielle Brooks and Grantham Coleman as the sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick.

The King and I AUGUST 21, 8 PMThis sumptuous production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic 1951 musical is directed by Bartlett Sher. Featuring a treasure trove of timeless Rodgers & Hammerstein hits and a cast of more than 50, the show was recorded during its 2018 run in London’s West End. Ken Watanabe is the King of Siam with Kelli O’Hara in her Tony Award-winning performance as schoolteacher Mrs. Anna.

Vienna Philharmonic Summer ConcertAUGUST 28, 7:30 PMFamed conductor and music and artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, returns to the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The program features popular selections from both European and American composers, including Bernstein, Gershwin, Chopin, Sousa, Dvorá̌k, Copeland and Strauss.

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER

My granddaughter recently reached a couple of milestones in her life. She turned two and she discovered Elmo. It has been interesting over the past few months to see what programs and videos she selects and how she accesses the content.

Delivery technologies have vastly changed in the short time since my children were her age. Besides the family TV, my granddaughter has her mother’s old tablet loaded with pre-approved videos. There is also the internet and cable TV, supplemented with subscription services. As she watches I am again reminded, very pointedly, of the importance of programming that not only entertains children but also prepares them for success in school.

I am proud to work for an organization that provides quality children’s programs on our main channel and 24/7 on PBS Kids. You too should be proud as a member of WTVP. Your donation helps provide a service that reaches more pre-school age children than any other kids' TV network and provides a safe viewing haven, all without commercials. WTVP is a bright spot on the vast media landscape and we truly appreciate what you do to make it happen.

In Season 7, Endeavour and his colleagues enter a new decade and era of change. Opening on New Year’s Eve 1969, normal order has been resumed and the team reunites at Castle Gate CID, with Chief Superintendent Bright back in charge. However, the events of the past year have left their mark: old friendships will be challenged, and new relationships will blossom. Amidst the dawn of women’s liberation, social progression and scientifi c growth, the 1970's begin for Oxford’s fi nest with the discovery of a body at the canal towpath on New Year’s Day. With the only clue in the investigation a witness who heard whistling on the night of the crime, the team have their work cut out to uncover their culprit.

Lydia Moss Bradley was a petite woman who lost her husband and all six children, but she turned her sorrow into long-lasting legacies in Peoria and beyond. Follow the journey of this strong woman, from her humble beginnings in Indiana through her death. Lydia quadrupled her late husband’s estate while at the same time making signifi cant contributions to the community.

NATURE RETURNS TO EMIQUONSUNDAY, AUGUST 23, 4:30 PM

Mother Nature has converted what was once thousands of acres of row crops into a mosaic of natural habitats that is home to birds, fi sh, amphibians and reptiles. Seeds that were dormant for 80 years have sprung to life by just adding water. Life as it was for a millennia has returned to Emiquon Preserve in Fulton County.

Fans of PBS KIDS will have a chance to see episodes from family favorites, including episodes to help young learners transition from summer time to school time in August. We will air complete coverage of the Democratic (August 17 – 20) and Republican (August 24 – 27) National Conventions, so you can see and hear where the major political parties are headed. Whether you rely on WTVP or other source(s) for news and information, I encourage you to do your homework, understand the issues and make your political decisions as informed citizens. Your preferred nominating convention can be the start. If you want the full picture, why not watch both?

I urge you to register to vote, and when election day rolls around in November, get out and cast your ballot. Or, if you prefer, contact your Election Commission and request a vote-by-mail ballot instead of in-person voting on Election Day. It’s easy, safe and convenient, and there is no fee. Who you vote for is your choice; the act of voting itself is one of the most powerful actions you can take to get what you want for your community and our nation.

WTVP will air more political news and analysis in the months ahead. Count on PBS NewsHour and other programs on WTVP to seek out all perspectives so you can make informed decisions.

Gentlemen of Vision follows a year in the life of coach, counselor and founder, Marlon Wharton, and his 2015-2016 class of young Black students as he strives to rewrite their prospects. While striving for excellence in school and in step, the team is persistently challenged by the violence and poverty of the streets surrounding them.

AMERICA REFRAMED: AGENTS OF CHANGETUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 7 PM

Agents of Change looks at a pivotal moment when our nation was caught at the intersection of the Civil Rights, Black Power, and Anti-Vietnam War Movements. The fi lm examines the racial conditions on college campuses across the U.S., focusing on two seminal protests: San Francisco State in 1968 and Cornell University in 1969.

AMERICA REFRAMED: CHARLIE VS. GOLIATHTUESDAY, AUGUST 18, 7 PM

Former Catholic priest Charlie Hardy is 75 years old and has no money or political experience. But none of that dissuades him from running for the U.S. Senate in his home state of Wyoming. Charlie’s platform, which transcends party lines, is to get money out of politics, raise the minimum wage and increase access to health care and higher education. As he and his three campaign volunteers crisscross the state in a decades-old school bus, can they sustain their grassroots campaign and effectively shake up the political establishment?

AMERICA REFRAMED: THROUGH THE REPELLENT FENCE TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, 7 PM

Through the Repellent Fence follows the creation of a two-mile-long ephemeral art installation by three Native American artists: Raven Chacon, Cristóbal Martínez and Kade L. Twist, collectively known as “Postcommodity.” The fi lm documents their collaboration as they construct Repellent Fence, a metaphorical "stitching" together of the United States and Mexico.

August 2 Episode One: Airline executive Juan Trippe, pilot Charles Lindbergh, airplane builder Igor Sikorsky and radio engineer Hugo Leuteritz join forces to build an airline servicing Latin America as Pan Am takes fl ight.

August 9 Episode Two: Pan Am builds larger fl ying boats and harnesses radio for navigation as it dominates service to Latin America. Juan Trippe’s plans to cross the Atlantic are dashed when Britain bars his planes from landing. He then sets his sights on the Pacifi c instead.

August 16 Episode Three: Defying the skeptics, Pan Am builds an airway to Asia, allowing the China Clipper to hopscotch across the world’s widest ocean by landing at fi ve stepping stone islands: Hawaii, Midway, Wake Island, Guam and the Philippines.

ACROSS THE PACIFICAcross The Pacifi c tells the story of a great milestone in aviation history: the 1935 crossing of the Pacifi c Ocean by a Pan American Airways fl ying boat known as the China Clipper. The documentary series recounts the development of this technological innovation led by Pan Am’s chief executive Juan Trippe, pilot Charles Lindbergh, airplane engineer Igor Sikorsky and radio engineer Hugo Leuteritz. Watch dramatic re-enactments, interviews with historians and biographers, and archival photographs, newsreel clips and fi lm.
