In the middle of one particular camping trip when I was a junior or senior in high school, my mother became quite ill and my dad rushed her back to Milwaukee for medical care and the comforts of home, leaving the rest of us behind. That very night as we slept in our tent, a vio- lent storm came up with incredible lightning, loud claps of thunder, and torrential rains. We kids had camped long enough to know that if we didn’t dig trenches around our tent, we would be lying in a pool of water with soaked clothing and bedding. We sprang out of our tent and into the driving rain to dig our trench using our one shovel and whatever sticks, rocks, or other objects we could find. We frantically worked, all soaked to the bone, intermit- tently frozen in place by bright flashes of lightning and angry bursts of thunder, and frightened by the trees overhead that bent with the wind and threatened to crush us. Well, we weren’t all out digging….my younger brother, probably a freshman or sophomore at the time, was fast asleep in the tent. I think of this night every time I hear the story of Jesus sleeping in the front of the boat. Don’t get me wrong—I am NOT equating my brother Andy with our Lord in any way. He wasn’t sleeping because of faith in God…he was just oblivious. And spoiled. Maybe lazy. But this is a newsletter article and not a family therapy session, so let me get on to the point. What I remember is how angry I was at him for being asleep. Here we were risking our lives and working our tails off to avoid total disaster, while he is snoozing peacefully. I wonder if the disciples didn’t feel a little bit the same—everyone was fighting to keep the boat upright in a turbulent storm except for one person who was fast asleep in the front. I hear an angry and indignant tone from the disciples: “Lord, do you not care that we are going to die?” (Mark 4:38) When Pope Francis referenced this Gospel story in his Urbi et Orbi homily on March 27, it really resonated with me. We find ourselves in the tempest of a pandemic, economic recession and social unrest. My inbox fills with questions and concerns about what lies ahead: what will school look like in the fall, will my child be safe if school does open like normal, how in the world can my child learn if it doesn’t, how can we afford everything, where do we stand with the protests and the riots? These are all valid questions and concerns. In the midst of the uncertainty, we will first turn to our Lord with full confi- dence and beg Him to calm the waters. n Pius X Uniform Try and Buy Day - July 1We are tentatively setting our Try and Buy Day for incoming freshman for Wednesday, July 1st from 11 am to 7 pm. New this year, one parent per student(s), please keep siblings home if possible. Returning Pius X students may also make purchases. The uniform shop accepts checks or cash only for payment. We have ordered inventory based on past sales. The shop and commons will be ready for you to purchase the items for your student(s) and take them home the same day. We will announce later more dates during the summer if you can’t make this one. Please check our webpage for updates and changes. You will find our webpage at www.piusx.net, under the Parents tab, click on School Uniforms. There is an order form with the items to purchase, sizes and prices. You don’t need to fill this out prior to coming, it is for your information. Please email any questions to [email protected]. n Meeting for parents and juniors signed up for the Washington D.C. trip There will be a meeting Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00pm in the LPAC for parents and students going on the junior class Washington, D.C. trip. The purpose of this meeting is to learn more about the itinerary, departure and arrival times and other details about the trip. The meeting is strongly encouraged to return or fill out necessary paperwork and learn more about the trip. If we are not able to travel at that time, each family will receive an email and the meeting will not take place. After registering, print the parking re-ceipt (the last page) and bring it with a payment of $100 to the main office on or before Tuesday, August 4. Failure to in-clude complete and accurate vehicle information, bring the receipt, or to pay before the time stated above may disqualify one from the opportunity to receive a parking spot. Starting Saturday, Au-gust 15, at 5 p.m., log in to the parking website to view the assigned parking spot number. Students are required to park in their assigned parking spot beginning the first day of school. If a student is parked in a spot not assigned to the student at any time during the school year, it may result in a $20 parking fine.n Locker Registration | Thursday, July 23 - Thursday, July 30Register for an individual locker at https://secure.piusx.net/lockers. given on Wednesday, August 5, attached to the student’s schedule. n Student Council elections updateSophomore and juniors who would like to run for student coun-cil for 2020-21: Please follow the guidelines set on the Pius website at PiusX.net/stucco. Due date is now July 31. The vot-ing process is forthcoming! Incoming freshmen elections will take place after school begins.n Math Placements for Incoming FreshmenPius usually gives a Math Placement Exam (MPE) to all incom-ing freshmen around Easter. However, due to students not be-ing in school, we could not give the test this year. Therefore, all incoming freshmen who were 8th graders in the Catholic Schools remain registered for the course that was recommended by their 8th grade teacher and for which you should already be aware due to the registration process. If, however, you feel your student was incorrectly placed or if you are concerned about that placement due to either extra work your student has done during the summer or lack of progress and understanding due to quarantine learning, your student can come to Pius to take the MPE for verification at 10 a.m. on either July 23 or 24. If you have questions, feel free to contact Anne Driewer (Math/Business Department Chair) at [email protected] Sign up for retreats under the new retreat policyStudents and Parents, if you have not yet viewed the new retreat policy and signed up for a retreat please visit https://www.pi-usx.net/students/faith/retreats-for-students/. If you have any questions please email [email protected]. n Senior Pictures due Friday, Oct. 23The Pius X Yearbook staff prefers the electronic submission of Senior Pictures directly from your photographer in a JPEG for-mat, but we will accept hard copies as well. Files should be sent to [email protected]. We need at least 600 KB sized files (the bigger, the better), vertical images, and please no social media/screenshot images (these will look grainy or pixelated in the yearbook). If sending from a phone, when you choose the size of the attachment, select ‘Actual Size’. More information can be found at https://www.piusx.net/students/yearbook-se-nior-picture-and-baby-ads/. We will accept digital photos and hard copy pictures of your child’s childhood picture. If sending a digital copy, send the largest file size available.n Health Physicals for 2020-21 The NSAA has released the following information in regards to physical exams for the 2020-21 school year: “The NSAA SMAC unanimously recommended to the NSAA board that Pre-Participation Physical Examinations (PPE) for the 2019-2020 school year be acceptable for the 2020-2021 seasons. This recommendation would be for a one-year exemption only and would not include incoming freshmen. They continue to rec-ommend that students visit their primary care providers for the PPE.” Here are some clarifications to this ruling for Pius X stu-dents: 1. All students new to Pius must complete a sports physical from a Medical Doctor (MD). This means all freshmen, and any student transferring into Pius for the 2020-21 school year. 2. Any athlete that suffered a concussion during the previous school year must complete a new physical examination. 3. Any athlete that had a new medical issue diagnosed during the previous school year including any surgery, must complete a new physical examination, ie. ashthma, heart murmur, diabetes, knee surgery, etc. 4. Any other athlete identified by Pius Athletic Administra-tion staff as needing an updated diagnosis.June 2021 – Join us for a trip to France, Spain & Portugal! We will be embarking on the blessing of a lifetime….a Marian Pilgrimage.. Where to send scoresIt is best to have your ACT/SAT scores sent to colleges directly from the ACT/SAT testing com-pany. When you register to take these tests, you are allowed to send it to four colleges without ex-tra cost. You may add more colleges for more cost or you may send scores to other colleges, later, through the websites. Many colleges will not ac-cept your ACT/SAT scores from your transcript, even though they are on the transcript. UNL is one of those colleges.

SAT PracticeGet free, personalized SAT practice! The College Board has teamed up with Khan Academy to cre-ate FREE practice resources. Visit satpractice.org for more information.

Athletics & Activities at Pius Xn Summer workouts began June 15Pius X will begin voluntary summer morning workouts on June 15th. To start with workouts will be open only to ath-letes who will be sophomores, juniors, and seniors. If possible, incoming fresh-men may be added at a later date. Head coaches have sent out an email to athletes they have contact information for. The athletes must respond to their head coach with the time session that will work best for them. We will have separate sessions for boys and girls. Because we are limit-ed on how many student athletes we can have at one time we will limit sessions to forty eight student athletes. We will be using the weight room and the gym, so 24 will be in the weight room, and 24 in the gym. The boys will have a schedule for Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fri-days. The girls will go Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays A waiver (found on our website) must be signed by parents and athletes before participating in workouts. If an athlete is not contacted by a coach, or hasn’t worked with a coach, please con-tact Athletic Director Tim Aylward at [email protected]. If you sign up for one of our voluntary summer morning work-out sessions you will be required to follow the strict safety procedures and guidelines from the NSAA and the health depart-ment that will be in place. If you are un-able or willing to follow these guidelines you will not be allowed to participate. n Summer RunningSummer Running Club is a great way to meet new friends and build a base for the fall seasons, especially cross country. n Health Physicals for 2020-21The requirements for school physicals are be-ing changed for the 2020-21 school year. If a student-athlete has a current approved physical filed with the school they are attending this fall, they will not need an updated physical the 2020-2021 school year. All incoming freshmen would still be required to provide the school with the paperwork that is dated no earlier than May 1, 2020. It is strongly recommended that incom-ing freshman and any student who does not have a current physical on file with the school should seek an appointment soon, if one can be done safely.

The Bolt School Newsletter June / July 20207

August alumni, stewardship events cancelledFriends of Pius Weekend events have been can-celled for 2020. This includes the Thunderbolt Fun Run, All Honor Year Reunion, and the events honoring Distinguished Steward, Out-standing Alumni and inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame. The difficult decision was made to cancel the 2020 events based on the over-whelming response from our alumni regarding their attendance as well as the restrictions put in place by the Lancaster County Health De-partment with regards to events. We hope you will all understand, and we look forward to hosting you at Pius X in 2021.

The Annual ThunderBOLT Fun Run may be canceled, but that doesn’t mean our Pius community can’t come “together” and raise some Pius X spirit! From now until August 8th you and/or your family can get out there in your most outrageous green and gold and log a 1 mile or 5K run/walk. Share your photos on social media using #RunningThunderBOLT2020 and tag @Lincolnpiusxalumni on Facebook, @PiusXAlumni on Twitter or send your photos to our alumni director [email protected] to be used on our social media platforms. The ThunderBOLT Fun Run supports the ThunderBOLT Fun Run Endowment which allows grants to be given to Pius X sponsored activities, clubs and departments. If you would like to give a free will donation to support the cause of the ThunderBOLT Fun Run, please go to https://www.piusx.net/donate/ click on other and write in ThunderBOLT Fun Run.

We were BLOWN away by the generosity of our Pius X Family during May's fundraising events. Together we

raised more than $415,000 which will provide our families, staff, and students with much needed financial certainty

during this uncertain time. THANK YOU!

A THUNDERBOLT THANK YOU!

TAGG receipts from local businesses to support Pius X You may remember Propelr, the fundraising tool to support local nonprofits while shopping at local businesses. While that option doesn’t exist anymore, you can use the TAGG app to accomplish a similar objective. Download the TAGG app, take pictures of receipts at participating business-es, and a portion of your purchase will be shared with the nonprofit you choose. You can find a list of participating nonprofits - including Pius X - in the app or at https://togetheragreatergood.com/.

DID YOU KNOW: If you are an Ama-zon Prime member, you can support the Pius X High School and Foundation:- Start your search at https://smile.ama-zon.com,- Select Pius X Foundation as your cho-sen charitable organization,- Resume shopping. This works today and everyday!

DID YOU KNOW: If your company is hosting a United Way campaign you can designate your donation to come to Pius X? Simply write-in Pius X Foundation on the form, and the rest is taken care of for you. Thank you!

of information regarding the pandemic and prepare for possi-ble scenarios of opening school like normal, opening school in a remote learning environment, and/or opening school with some combination of both. We are pursuing every avenue pos-sible to assist with funding our school so that we can relieve the financial burden on families and parishes. We are listening to the voices and stories of our minority brethren and trying to think of ways that we can build empathy in our students while

equipping them to pursue non-violent solutions to social injus-tice. As I write this, I do not know how school will start in the fall. I do not know how quickly the economy will recover. I do not know what it will take for all people to be treated with dig-nity and respect regardless of their differences. I do know that Jesus is in this boat with us, and that He loves us very much. Let us face these turbulent times together with confidence that He will see us through the storm.
