August 2019 Dustin James New England Galloway Group Its hard to believe that the month of August is already here. Time sure does fly by for all of us this time of year between the humid hayfields, preparing our cattle for upcoming events and all of the other challenges summer seems to bring. On July 21, 2019 the New England Galloway Group (NEGG) hosted their annual summer meeting and field day at Meadowlark Homestead Farm in Brownfield, Maine. Meadowlark Homestead Farm is a beautiful farm nestled between the mountains of western Maine and the White Mountains of New Hampshire offering views that are second to none. Owned by Robert Potter and family, the farm has been home to a successful herd of Belted Galloways for decades and continues to raise and show Belted Galloways today. The Potter Family is a long-time supporter of the New England Galloway Group and we are thankful for their lovely hospitality. Despite the unusually warm temperatures in the 90s, a great turnout of nearly 70 people, representing six states, attended the annual event. Excitingly, a number of new members and junior attendees were on hand. The group featured a diverse and well-rounded set of breeders from a variety of different types of operations, all with one common goal of preserving and promoting the Belted Galloway breed. This diversity is what allows our group to collaborate on a level that benefits the membership as a whole rather than targeting any one type of operation. We began the day with a social hour and networking session with the idea that everyone had an opportunity to discuss and educate other breeders on the different strategies and genetics used within their individual programs and to reach out for advice if they so needed. Following the social hour, we began our annual meeting. The agenda of this years meeting included officer and committee reports, a National Belted Galloway Sale recap, a review of the changes and updates for the national show in Louisville, a discussion regarding the 2020 World Galloway Congress, a review of the BGS Show Points System, and the election of NEGG officers and board of directors. The group offered excellent input and a lot of productive conversation was had. The results of the elections as voted on by the membership were as follows; Heidi Baker (ME), President, Dustin James (ME), Vice President, Bob Bickford (NH), Treasurer, and Corinna Caron (ME), Secretary. Joining the Board of Directors during the upcoming term will be; Mike Constantine (ME), Morgan Badeau (ME), and Randy Hall (ME) (past president). The new officers are excited to serve the group during this term and look forward to finding ways to improve communication within the group and for providing useful resources to the membership. New to this years meeting, the group also arranged a number of activities for the youth attendees to participate in rather than hosting an educational speaker or clinic as done in the past. The events included a farmers olympics and cow chip bingo which raising nearly $500 for our junior members. This money, along with funds from other fundraising efforts throughout the year, are used as sponsorship money for junior shows across our region each show season. The group will host their next meeting on December 8, 2019 at the Maine Department of Agriculture in Augusta, ME beginning at 10:00 am. The upcoming winter meeting will be used to discuss and plan the 30th National Belted Galloway Sale which will be held April 24-26, 2020 in Fryeburg, Maine. A full report including this years annual meeting minutes and a link to become a member are available on the NEGG website. US Beltie News
